Camera default focus with face detection - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

i bought 2 Galaxy Note II at the same store. They both have some software, etc. One is able to detect face when camera is launched but not the other unit. camera settings on both units are exactly the same... this is really driving me crazy... the default face detection is a big plus. can someone shed some light on this????? Thanks.

bump... can anyone confirm if face detection is the default focus mode upon launching camera app??

I was wondering the same thing because when I first booted my phone and went to the camera and had face detection and I changed something that had nothing to do with face detection and it took it off and I've never had it back on since

The thing that makes go nuts is... my wife's note 2 has face detection as default focus mode! i looked at the setting under focus mode. it only shows auto focus and macro... no way you can choose face detection...

Sweet. Hopefully it's hacked with front camera access and the ability to enable it by holding the volume rocker to do the scan. Hopefully you don't wake up one day looking really ugly.

It would be nice to have the camera key on the side though. There already a couple of face "detection" apps out there, not recognition though. Photofunia, in market, takes face and puts in various backrounds, works well

One example of the motion sensor is that when someone calls you, the Evo quiets the ringtone when it detects you've moved your phone with the intent to pick up the call.
It's actually a proximity sensor, used to turn the screen off when it's held close to your face. The feature of the ringer quieting on pickup uses the accelerometer.
So what does the motion sensor do?

The Light sensor via front of HD2 disables touchscreen of device when held close to face! The motion sensor is used for screen rotate and other apps that work well with phone positioning commands!

The light sensor has nothing to do with disabling the touch screen. Its used to change the auto brightness of the display. The screen shuts off when on the phone because its turned upright.
Well that's how it works on the evo. So I would think the same for hd2 that u mentioned in a evo thread...

Ahh, but u can hold the phone next to u and the screen won't come on till u tilt the phone horizontal...anyway its not the light sensor...And yes a face recog app would be very cool to have...

1) Accelerometer: Used to detect changes in movement. Used primarily in Android for apps such as Bump, or to rotate the screen, or games such as Teeter and racing simulators (tilt phone like you're turning the steering wheel, etc.) Also known as the motion sensor.
2) Light sensor: Used to detect ambient light so that when the phone's brightness is set to automatic, it knows to increase or decrease the brightness of the screen appropriately.
3) Proximity sensor: Used to detect if something is near the speaker and of the phone. Mainly it is used to turn off the screen and touch input when it detects something near its front, and a call is in progress (aka, detects the side of your head near it, so your cheek doesn't accidentally push any buttons).
As for the facial recognition, yes, that would be nice, but what happens when you get a haircut? Put on glasses? Have a zit? Get a black eye? Swollen lip? Sunburn? Grow/shave a beard/mustache/etc.? That's the problem with these kinds of software, and why all computers that have facial recognition will always have a password or some other kind of backup authentication.

no... asus laptops have the face recognition systems and it works GReAT!!! no problems whatsoever... but thats b/c u can put sooo many pictures and set the sensitivity of the security on the camera... its pretty sweet

It's also a laptop and you still have the password login as a backup. Believe me, I used to cell them and had to reset the password every other day because bratty little kids came in and thought they were smart and tough by setting the camera login to themselves making some disgusting face, and the password to "toughguy" or "password".

Lol at the misinformation, thanks for clearing that up for our slower folk.
This is definitely gonna happen sooner or later.
It would need a backup method of course but if made properly it would be more general and little things wouldn't change the outcome.
I was thinking this...
You take 3 pictures the first time you open the app.
It merges them, aligns the face and sets a gaussian blur to smooth and remove imperfections.
Then it cuts out things like hair and eyebrows leaving behind the static parts of your face such as eye shape, nose, mouth, jawline and cheekbones.
It basically takes the 3 specific pictures of your face, and generalizes them, while keeping them relatable to every future pic.
I think its called interpolation, which gives you the perfect identifier, ultimately being used to recognize you.
Of course a setting would be needed to change how similar the face needs to be before being granted access but theres no reason it wouldn't work.
My other going thought is an app that learns as you go but it won't work as well.

iTS AN OK thought of how it works but my HD2 can be of any position even flat down and as long as I am in a call and i put my finger over the light sensor (same as face, ear being close to sensor not letting hardly any light get to it)
the screen disables! I think many of you may not have the HD2 if ya didn't know that, don't let internet chat and gossip get in the way of the truth, truth is within the device when holding it, not hear-say. Also why would the accelerometer have anything to do with disabling screen when in an upright position? If one was to lay down in bed chatting on fone, my HD2 would un-disable screen... Try an app called mToolbox, it emulates what light sensor and motion sensor can be used for. I would say, light sensor can be more useful in many more apps than motion, motion works great with changing screen from portrait to landscape and movement in games.. An app to control ps3 via bluetooth using HD2's accelerometer feature would be useful, but for now, i have tweaked it to off, I have many older WinMo's and find using the screen orientation key much more faster and when i need it, it gets annoying when the screen changes at unwanted times and no matter how you calibrate any accelerometer, there are flaws to it depending on what situation one is in when holding the device (fone must be upright again to go back to portrait if fone was laying down) sorry for the long babble but I'm certain that the light sensor own's the screen shut-off feature on the HD2 for sure.. Quote me again any time!

Samsung quick glance

Hi guys,
Did any body nanaged go get this function working. Even though the appropriate setting is ticked I can't get the the phone light up when switched off!

Anyway. .. You have to swipe your hand over the light sensor while screen is off

Just hover your hands over the light sensor, but you have to do it kind of slowly and also it response at least 1s after you have hovered your hand over your phone. It's not really that useful of a function, more of a gimmick.
I do want to ask, do these motion functions really drain the battery a lot? As this means the motion sensor is always on.

i cant seem to get it working neither.... it only works in the quick glance motion tutorial... very weird. am i missing some other settings? motion is on, quick glance ticked, screen lock is setup, anything else??

Its a cr*p feature -- or at least the implementation is. You need to sort of hover or cup your hand over the sensors and move it away slowly. Then sometimes it 'works', which means if you do it right about a second or two later the screen slowly wakes up and shows some info. All this takes 4-5 seconds, in which time you could have quickly switched the screen on and off anyways in lesser time.
Gimmick, as someone has pointed out above.
Not only your hand, but anything that cover the light sensor.
Try to calibrate the gyroscope

To do this go to Advance settings and calibrate it.
I have question too about this QUICK glance (but actually slow glance)
I like this to use to check the time specially during night.
But it is really not quick when I use mine and my friend sister told me that hers is fast.
Does somebody know how to do it make it fast?
kind of a useless feature IMO. doesn't display much in the quick glance screen. much easier to just press the home key.
Yeah, ur right the home button is faster. But I dont believe this is crap feature, it depends in situation. In my side I use this glance feature during night and wake up to check the time not hurting the eye for glare. And in theater also you can use this to check the time, it is really respectfull if you try not to distract others inside the theater.

guys, it works fine. just hover your hand in front of the sensor just in and out just like that all in less than1 second for me. it works everytime perfectly. very convenient. can someone confirm if this drains massive amounts of battery or negligible.
After trying the feature several times -- during which it did not work -- I then went in and did the gyroscope calibration. Then went back in, turned Motion on, and turned Quick Glance on. Now it works.
It was working for me up until last week, now my light sensor and or my proximity sensor seem to have stopped working all together. I am unable to get it to work at all. Is there any way to increase the light sensor sensitivity?

It works just fine, but my problem is I like to have a screen timeout of 10 minutes, and manually turn my phone off when I want. Half the time I would click it off and set it down, it would immediately wake back up because my hand was over/near the sensor as I set it down.
Works perfect here whatever screen timeout I have set.
Remember that the phone had to be perfectly still and possibly on a level surface for it to work.
Regarding using battery I've read that the n2 has a slower processor dedicated to the motion features do doesn't fire up the main processor when using these features.

This feature is ok, but it's something a lot of people can live without. It'd be more impressive for us if Samsung extended this to other controls in their main apps, such as allowing this gesture when you receive a call. Wave your hand over the phone and it'll automatically pick up the call in speakphone mode. The Pantech Sky Vega had this feature when it launched last year and something like this is super useful if you're working with your hands (getting them dirty).

It also works for the flip cover. So when I just open the cover the glance appears then swipe the screen to unlock..no hard buttons to push

[Q] HELP! Always Active Front Camera!

Hi, I have a very weird problem with my N7100. When I put my finger or anything in front of my front camera, the toggle bar will disappear and the screen will be still and no response. This is really bothering especially when I am playing games. Cause I swipe my finger in front of my front camera unpurposely and the game will be interrupted. It looks like the front camera is active to detect anything in front it, and if there is any thing blocking front camera, the screen will be frozen up!
This problem start with my official system (Samsung Touchwiz) comes with N7100. So I rooted my phone and put alliencerom there, it comes back again....If you restart the system, it goes away for a while and will come back sometime. Really bothering, I have found out what is the trigger, I believe there is a trigger though.
So I don't know any N7100 user encountered the same problem? And any idea about getting rid of it?

I checked all those and they are off, I actually never turned them on. Today I found that after I use groove ip make a phone call. The problem will come up. I don't know exactly how.....
I test it a little and I found it is the function of Groove IP which freeze the screen when you are making a call. But somehow after you done with your call, the front camera just keeps doing so. I think there is something with screen rotation during the call.
Now I think problem solved by checking off "auto rotate" in Groove ip setting.

After using my new Note 3 to take some photos while hiking over the weekend, I found out most were out of focus. Looking at how the camera works, it seems that when you take a photo the phone takes it immediately without focusing first. It will try to focus as you move it around but if it did not focus yet, it will not do so when you take the photo. On my Relay 4G as well as Galaxy Nexus (and pretty much any other phone I used) the auto focus will kick in right after you press the shutter button and will at least try to focus the picture. Is there any way to force the Note 3 to work the same way? I went through all the camera settings and did not see anything.

I've been using the tap to take the shot feature. It's is the camera settings. It's a great feature and works well. I like taking a handful of different shots but it works well for up close shots and distance shots. Once turned on you literally tap the screen where you want the camera to focus and it will focus on the area and take the shot. But yes like you I've noticed that sometimes pressing the shutter button sometimes does not achieve focus. Hope this he's as kind of a work around for you.

Mine have all auto focused though I do prefer to tap to focus. The times when I didn't tap, it went through its focus cycle and was fine. Perhaps its focusing on something else in the image frame? Maybe there is a smudge on the lens and its focusing on that and makes the rest of the image blurry.

[Q] Front Camera appears cropped when wanting to take a picture

Hi
On my G4 the front camera looks like it has become cropped and doesn't fit the whole screen, see attached image. I have tried restarting the phone.
Any ideas why this has happened, if I use the main camera it is fine and if I use dual mode it is also fine, it wasn't always like this, i have changed the ratio settings and that doesn't do anything.
Anyone else had this?
You have the flash mode on. Turn off the flash icon and it will go back to normal.

Ah, so the "flash" mode on the front camera is actually using the whiteness of the screen itself for illuminating your face as it faces the white screen? Clever...
Ahhaaaaa thank you was driving me crazy!
FYI it does this too if you lowered the screen DPI. The rear camera is fullscreen but the front camera is letterboxed.
