I have an ibolt car mount for my previous Galaxy s3 that i want to use with my LG but it does not seem to work.
I use tasker to recognize when the phone is docked, and that would work with the s3 but when placing in the LG, its not triggering my tasker profile.
Any ideas?

It sounds like the magnetic sensor was in a different location for the S3. I checked my LG and it looks like the sensor is located next to the volume rocker, about a 1/2 inch from the edge of the phone.
I was thinking of getting the same dock. How is the fit?
Fit is great. I thought the device goes into car mode based on the usb plug. What sensor are you referring to?

So far, every phone I've had has a magnetic sensor (or two) built into them that controls car mode or desk dock mode.. When you put the phone in the car dock, there is a small magnet embedded in the dock that trips the phone's sensor and causes car mode to start.
You can demonstrate this for yourself by placing a magnet against the back of your phone near the volume rocker. If the magnet is strong enough the car will start up the car dock app.
Thanks for the info on the fit. I may purchase one and setup Tasker to start car mode when the phone is connected my car bluetooth and plugged into the dock.
----
I just read a review on this dock and it mentioned a special cable and power adapter that is required for the S3 to recognize car mode. That's probably why it doesn't work with the LG. I don't think there is any support for that built into the LG.
This may be kind of late but I suppose you could get a NFC sticker and stick it to the dock using that to trigger the settings.

I was using the magnet to enable the Car Dock mode, but after JB, that is gone. Now I use Car Home and use the active car dock on Bluetooth. Other Item I didn't like with JB and Car Dock is that when in Car Dock mode the lock screen would go landscape, after JB it will not rotate.

There's an app which will place it in dock mode whenever its being charged. Down side is like I said "whenever" its being charged. Just gotta look for the app.
I'm waiting to see if it will put it into dock mode.
i will be watching this thread
Just ordered it about 2 minutes ago ... will report back once I get it
No. I don't think it puts it into dock mode automatically. I had the one for the Evo and that did not put it into dock mode. But I liked it because I did not have to remove my cover every time I put it in the dock. This one looks like it will also accommodate it for those that have an extended battery case..
The Nightclock app puts the phone in its own landscape alarm clock mode when it detects the phone is charging.
Just got mine. It works great with the Active X cases for standard and extended batteries. There is an attachment that snaps into the dock for when you're not in a case. It works perfectly!

I can't tell you for sure because I'm running a Sense 3 preview ROM with no working dock mode as of right now (they are working on a fix.) I may grab a dock mode app from the market in the meantime. It does rotate all my apps though.
Does the dock have an audio jack on it?
If not, can you still plug headphones into it, while on the dock?
For anyone that owns the car dock:
1) how's the quality? Is it nice? Or is it a cheapo peice of junk?
2) how does it charge the phone? Via cigarette lighter? Or does it not charge the phone?
3) if I wanted to listen to music, does it come with/turn into an FM transmitter? Or do I just plug it into the auxiliary port on my car?
Thanks!

I can speak to the Moto version, it's the one I have. There's an AT&T branded one also. Moto version comes with a USB connection from the dock to a dual USB cigarette lighter charger. At the charger end of the USB plug, there's a short pigtail female aux jack that can plug directly to a 1/8" stereo aux cable to go to your 1/8" aux jack in your stereo (comes with cable also). It charges well, except when the battery gets hot. It tends to do that in direct sunlight unless you blow a/c on it. I would suggest looking at a vent clip for it, that's my plan. This would most likely work with it: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0015A6YN6/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Yep, USB plugs into the back in that square indent. It wasn't a thorough review.
I got the ATT one and that one does not come with a charger. It comes with the usb/aux cable and dock. I got a rocketfish 2 AMP charger and it works great for it. Charging is great other than when it gets really hot in the sun (all black interior)
The new car dock 2.3.4 software is great and looks better than the earlier 2.2.2 and via AUX the sound quality is great on spotify / slacker / FLAC's and and mp3's into my stereo. I have my mounted near my gearbox and can easily tap what I want while shifting.
Work the money... I think all docks are worth it if it works into your day to day usage.
Thanks guys. Planning on buying this now I've got the Motorola Car Charger from Amazon, so not having a charger come with it is okay for me.
I've heard the dock doesn't work with many cases, so I want to build my own, but the split cable is the most important part. Does anyone know where I can get one, or even which wires are set to which pins? I could solder up my own if I had to, but would need to know what I was supposed to end up with first.

I have the moto version purchased thru att for $25. The dock works great plugged into the aux on my car. I've even used it to take calls handsfree through my car's stereo (have to turn the volume down on the phone pretty low for best results). The suction cup works well and holds it tight, I use it on my bike as well for bluetooth to my SENA SMH10 on my helmet.

Sounds like you are running a customized ROM with the wake on volume mod. The car dock application runs on top of the standby / lock screen, so my guess is that the volume rocker has been hijacked by the mod, preventing the volume from being able to control the volume when locked and car dock app active. I think gingerbread has a way to go still which is why I am still on Froyo.

I believe this is correct, and I agree fully on the gb thing. I want to put it on my phone so bad, but something keeps telling me to wait. I even dl'd the ninja rom over the weekend and have the zip sitting there looking at me... tempting me...
Anyway, I have the car dock. When you can use it it's awesome. The only issue I had was on a long trip the battery was only at 70% when I arrived. I think the software lets it charge until it's full, then just stops charging at all. Not sure though, and the phone was VERY hot when I arrived too. The body glove case only kind of fits, the top won't clip down with it on. I bought the moto rugged battery cover from cnn, and it fits fine with the insert removed, but I hate the case. Barely any protection on the screen at all. The sides pull back very easily. Like if you are talking on the phone and have your finger on the lower corner, it just pulls off and you have to put your finger on the menu button to hold the phone. It sucks and I went back to the body glove. I don't use the car dock every day, so when I do I just take the case off.
Cardock app not launching
I got the car dock from AT&T. When I put the phone in, it charges fine but the car dock application does not launch. I've tried few different chargers and all possible variations of connecting things in with the same result.
If I manually launch the car dock application, the screen goes back to sleep after some time.
Do I have a defective piece?

So, I just purchased a Car Dock for my GN from expansys, arrived a few mins ago. Upon putting my phone on it, a notification saying "Car mode enabled" appears. There is no other changes though...
My question is, so what is car mode supposed to enable? So the Pogo Pins are just novelty?

When Car mode is enabled, the default Car Home app is activated, and audio is routed through the dock. Sounds like you don't have a "Car Home" app installed though at the moment.

Galaxy Nexus is supposed to be Google's flagship phone and the pogo pin was supposed to enable something in the phone, even on stock without the user needing to download anything extra like what the nexus one is able to do.
The Galaxy Nexus however apparently is not able to do anything different regardless of when you purchase a car dock with pogo pins or not. The user still have to get a "Car Home" app from the marketplace.
So, why did I buy an official car dock instead of just getting a better dock that cost cheaper and works with multiple devices?
Do you get what I mean?

Well sort of. But I don't understand why it is an issue to install Google's Car Home. The files I posted are ones I ripped from the Nexus One ROM, so you have the same functionality as the N1.
When you insert the GNex into the dock, it launched Car Home, exactly like the N1...

That's not exactly what's going on. As another poster noted, "Car Mode" on the phone does a couple of things when you insert the phone into the POGO dock.
- The phone does into landscape (no big deal I know)
- The phone activates a digital audio stream (spdif) through the pogo pins which the car dock changes into analog via a digital/analog board in the dock. This enables you to use the line out with a 3.5mm jack while only needing the 3 pogo pins connected
- The phone triggers whatever default "car dock app" you have installed. There isn't an OEM one at this time preinstalled, but from my experience those usually suck anyway compared to the market offerings. There are free car dock market apps out there, but CarHome Ultra is by far the best, in my opinion.
- The phone charges at AC speed via the included adapter. This is enough to not lose power even when the screen is on, running navigation, and using an audio player all at the same time.
The dock is far from a google fail, in my opinion.

This depends on the orientation that you have. If you have it portrait, it stays portrait. So basically this is not what the dock does.

One other thing the dock does is it forces the phone to "Keep Awake"

I was disappointed too. I thought the dock would unlock a secret feature so it would make me breakfast while I drive to work and dinner on the way home.
At least it charges my phone at an AC rate without needing to connect a wire everytime I get in the car.
Well, that helps although I think Google should direct the user to get a car home app. It was preinstalled with Gingerbread, I think..
I was thinking that when you get the car dock a secret would show up or something. I installed the one from Nexus One.
Thanks for the clarification.
So, this might sound crazy, but is there a way to enable car mode without a dock? The reason I ask is once my Trident Kraken AMS case gets here I'll be mounting it to my motorcycle with a bike clip and I thought it would be nice to use one of the car mode apps.

Thus you can put an NFC sticker on any car mount you want and have it go into car dock mode as if using the POGO pins, even without using them and paying the extra premium for car docks with those.

The Infuse dock automatically starts my car app (Car Home Ultra) and the USB charging and 3.5mm audio out work flawlessly. Only downside is the fact that it won't work with a case, as the previous poster mentioned, but I use a Diztronic TPU style case that takes seconds to remove and put back on so I don't mind it at all.
I use an NFC sticker, with NFC Task Launcher, to initiate (and terminate) car dock mode.
The dock that works is the Infuse 4G car dock. I bought mine from AT&T for $17.99, but it's sold out now. Amazon has it in stock for $29.99. I'm not aware of a better price at the moment, but I'd search and look for the best price.
I'm using a Brodit active charge cradle with an NFC tag (NFC Launcher kicking off a Tasker profile). By far the best & most secure cradle I've seen or used, but not cheap (about £50 all up).
