This seems to have been asked in a few previous posts, however, I can find no definitive answer.
My problem revolves around a spike in data usage last night. I had decided with the announcement of Google Reader being retired (grrr) I would replace gReader as my default RSS reader with RssDemon (which actually turns out to be just as good).
Once I had manually added all my feeds into RssDemon, I decided to uninstall gReader. This was whilst at home and connected to wi-fi.
Within a couple of hours I received my preset warning over data usage, which upon checking had spiked up 140mb due to 'Removed Apps'.
Now, having only had the phone a couple of weeks, I have monitored data usage very closely from day one, to ensure there are no background services wasting my data plan.
My gReader usage before uninstalling was around the 35mb mark. Why on earth would it jump up so high just from removal ?
Has it actually used the data or is it possible it is an error in the calculation within the Usage app itself ?
Any help / advice greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hi
I have two Note II's. One I bought and rooted (Korean made) then had a few problems so I bought another (made in China - different sellers).
Anyway the first one is good now with PACMAN AOKP 4.2.2 the other still fully Samsung.
I cant get my work exchange email to work on either. Any recommendations for an app? Will happily pay if it will work.
secondly I would like to install a nice bootanimation on my rooted device, something tasteful like the mega droid walk. Will this work on my 4.2.2/ Have had issues installing any bootanimations so I rerooted and dont want to stuff it up again

no worries mate
Anyone able to offer any possible explanations ?
Did you ever change roms? And restore data via titanium backup?
Because if you o store usage data via titanium backup then there is a chance of getting it corrupted. Sometimes after reset it would show me that system. UI has use 1.97 his which actually real racing 3 has use this is I think it's because android signs apps unique id on the basis of which it stores data usage. When you reset it probably assigns them which overlap which previous ones which caused the data usage to show wrong info.
this is SPARTAAA

Does your carrier not provide you with an option to check actual data usage from their end? You could compare and see the actual one with the built in usage data.

Hey all, I did not have much luck using the search. Tried to find other people who have had this problem.
We have 4 ATT Tilt 2 phones in my department. All with the same rom, radio, settings, etc. The difference in the phones is that 2 of them were purchased about a year earlier than the other 2.
*PROBLEM* TWO of the phones (the newer purchased Tilt 2's) we are getting alerts for high data usage from ATT. Looked at the ATT data logs, sure enough they have high data usage, large amounts at odd times. like 20mb - 100+mb transfers in the late night early morning, during the day. Not good, it is all adding up quick with no suspect in sight. The 2 users with this problem, use the phone data less than I do for day to day tasks and I am way under the alert limit, its not something they are causing---some of these data periods are while the user is ASLEEP (and no, we do NOT use MS myphone sync). Its got to be a phone software or software compatibility with the newer Tilt 2 hardware or something. I tried a couple different ROMS, same problem. Right now we are all on Energy.RHODIUM.21684.Sense2.5.Cookie.sencity.Nov.08
Radio: 4.49.25.77 (best signal in our area) Michigan
Please help. Thanks to anybody who can provide some guidance.
MOD feel free to close this thread since nobody seems to be able to help, I will try the ROM Devel thread instead.

Okay first off i am sure you can monitor your data service, so pick a start time and turn your mail/weather setting to once a day, turn off location service , watch it for 24 hr's then only change the location setting back on for the next 24 hrs leaving the mail and weather the same...compare the results...if it is still using high data, then flash a stock rom...if the usage is still high then i suspect it is a hardware issue..just a guess but it kind sounds like it..
There was a PPC "virus" that was passed around not long ago where the program that was installed contained an executable that would dial long-distance numbers late at night. Try comparing the list of installed programs on the affected devices to the stable devices. Most likely, this sounds like a user generated issue. Feel free to post the list of installed applications here. I will try them out if/when I can find them.
I haven't used it before but have seen it recommended several times on this site...SPB Wireless Monitor (http://www.spb.com/pocketpc-software/wirelessmonitor/) should be able to tell you what's using the data on your phones.
I wonder if this has anything to do with it (SEEING THAT BOTH OF OUR USERS WITH THE PROBLEM WERE LINKED TO YAHOO MAIL ACCOUNTS! And not the rest of us)

For the last couple of week my phones system apps have been using appx 10-15Mb per day in 3G data and I have no idea why.
It's chewing up most my allowance and I'm going to have to disable the APN soon if I can't find out what's causing it.
I know it's a system app as i'm using TrafficStats Lite but it doesn't tell me exactly what the source of the problem is. It lists the below under the section that is causing me the problem:
Contracts Storage
Dialer
People
com.android.providers.applications
Plugin sample
com.android.providers.userdictionary
Hi,
first of all try market://search?q=pname:com.curvefish.apps.trafficinfo
shows trafffic per app
maybe you try to disable background sync?
a other option would be droidwall, so you can enable every app that should get internet access and the others wont get it - needs root.
cya
TrafficInfo doesn't give me any better info than TrafficStats Lite.
Also, disabling background sync doesn't tell me why the system is suddenly using up 10-15mb a day when it has never used anything like that in the 10months i've had it.
Droidwall will be useful in the short term until I can find out why my system apps are using so much data though.
Thanks.
Hi,
Sorry to bring up this old thread, but since a month or so I have been noticing the exact same thing on my HTC Legend. Got a 500MB monthly limit, never got even close to consuming it all... but in November, data usage got crazy and I hit the limit.
3G Watchdog shows me these apps as the top data consumer: "People", "com.android.providers.userdictionary", "Dialer", "Contacts Storage" and "com.android.providers.applications". These all show up as one combined entry, and for example have consumed 9MB only yesterday.
Anyone know what exactly is going on here?
Thanks for any advice,

Sorry for that, will do.
I apologize if this has been brought up before, but the data reporting in ICS is almost double what the myverizon app is showing.
Just wondering if the usage shown by Verizon is going to catch up. If not I got a lot more streaming I can do

do you have a task killer installed, if so then you may be killing the myverizon tracker their for its not collecting all data
You need to set the data usage to match your billing cycle dates than it should match. I have found that it needs set manually.
Please hit the thanks button if I helped.
Don't know about VZ, but comparing Tmo's website and ICS's data meter, they're almost identical (ICS was a few MB ahead)
The 'Total Data Usage' meter appears to be relatively consistent with my operators readings (Sunrise/Switzerland).
On the other hand, the 'per app' reading appears to be completely off the wall. (See this thread.)

Measured by your phone. Your carrier's data usage accounting may differ.
My carrier (Unitel, Laos) is reporting me using just over double the data ICS is reporting.
I'm on O2 in the UK and the ICS data is about 85 mb behind the networks calculation ?
Two days ago I was pushing 2GB and now suddenly I have only used 608 MB? How can that be explained?
Has anyone seen their usage suddenly go down for no reason?
I'm in the middle of the billing cycle. I've done nothing to the phone.
Now I've lost all faith in the data usage meter.

You remember to move the slider to correct date? It doesnt do this by default so it looks like your data usage dropped everytime you go to the data usage section.
Yes, it doesn't matter where the sliders are set, I get the same result.
It appears to have forgotten about one week's worth of data, my first week. I got the phone on the sixth and now it is showing zero data used until the 12th.
My usage cycle is set for 27th-26th, so it doesn't make any sense to me that it would suddenly forget about six days of data.
It's forgotten about the data used on the wifi side before the 12th as well.
Any ideas?
GR
For me the "data usage" on the phone was reporting slightly higher than VZW, but imo that's better than slightly lower!

Yes I have experienced the same! I was around 3GB, my phone went completely dead on a Sat night, when I plugged it up in the car and tried to boot it back up it apparently didn't have the juice to boot all the way. I let it charge for a while, booted it, all my SMS tones had been reset and so was my "data usage"!! Sucks!
Well, I have let the battery run down until the phone turned itself off several times, but I hope this is not causing this problem. That would be a pretty significant bug!
I downloaded My Data Manager last month and looked at it a few days ago to see how I have used my data and such.
I noticed that there was a process called "com.sonyericsson.usbux" that had used 684mb of my data plan and 2.81gb of wifi. After some research, I found that "com.sonyericsson.usbux" is what makes it possible to connect your phone via USB to your computer. I have only connected the phone once in the 8 months I've had it so I used Titanium Backup to freeze it. I left it for a couple days and checked my usage again. To my surprise, "com.sonyericsson.usbux" had changed to "com.sonyericsson.unsupportedheadsetnotifier" with almost 1gb of data plan usage and 3.19gb of wifi usage.
After freezing "com.sonyericsson.unsupportedheadsetnotifier" since the only headset I use with the phone is the one that came with it, I waited another couple days. Of course, "com.sonyericsson.unsupportedheadsetnotifier" has now changed to something else and the usage count is still going up at an alarming rate.
I don't want to keep freezing apps hoping to get lucky and find what is sending all this data to who knows where. If I use a firewall app like DroidWall to block the bundle that includes usbux and unsupportedheadsetnotifier, my contacts, emails, etc. aren't able to sync.
I have no idea what else to do. Does anybody in the community have any ideas?
You could replace the .usbux by just using a widget on your homescreen, and uninstall the app instead of freezing. If you don't need the other apps that are using so much data, or if you can replace them, then you should also uninstall them. Since you're obviously rooted, you could do a nandroid backup before any of this, or just backup the apps in Titanium before uninstalling them, in case you're worried about messing something up. I've removed almost every single com.sonyericsson.* app and haven't had any issues as far as i can tell

*Edit* The problem was found to be with Titanium backup and how it reports data usage by apps after you restore it. I have contacted the developer for investigation.

Hi guys, this is a x-post from the Themes and Apps forum. I thought I'd post it here so more eyes would see it as a potential warning:
________________________________________________________________________
So, I have Tasker installed on my Nexus just for simple automation that turns on Wi-Fi tether when my phone's Bluetooth pairs with my car stereo (which is also Android) so I can stream Internet radio etc.
I've been noticing lately that my data has been transmitting a lot when my phone has been sitting idle so I did some investigation and found that Tasker has sent over 2GB of data this month alone. This is more than I've used while tethered! I can't think of any valid reason as to why it would need to send that much data (if any at all) so I am highly suspicious of this app. Anyone else using Tasker? Can you check your data usage to see if you're seeing the same?
Update: I checked my previous months of data usage. Tasker shows as #1 with the following being reported:
September: 4.0GB
August: 3.36GB (app was installed August 7th from the Playstore).
Here's the FAQ from the author's site on Internet access usage:
The INTERNET permission is used solely for:
google maps downloading map data, only for setting up a Location context
to carry out HTTP Post/Get actions and other actions that require an Internet connection by their nature
to verify the order number, and only until it has been successfully verified
to check whether a new Tasker version is available, if configured in Preferences
Tasker never directly uses Internet access for anything else.
I have emailed the author asking for an explanation. I will update the thread when I hear back from him. In the meantime, if you're using Tasker I advise you to check your data usage to see any suspicious activity.
Maybe there's a bug in yours? Tasker consistently registers <10MB for me...
Edit: Thought I'd mention, I bought mine from the Play Store as well.
Tasker is <1MB for me too, and I got it straight from the author.

My copy is from the Playstore as well. Updated to the latest version. The author has contacted me. I'll keep you guys posted.
I've been using Tasker for over two years and have never had such an issue. In the past month, Tasker has used 899KB on my Nexus. I also have it installed on 4 other devices with no such problems.
My suggestion would be to examine your profiles - especially ones you didn't create yourself - for any actions that might use data.
The description you listed from the developer's due sounds right - Tasker uses limited data in support of other actions (like displaying maps in scenes), but has several actions that will use data if you tell it to do so.

May I suggest that you also checkout Droidwall. It will allow you to control what apps can access your wifi/data. This is assuming you've unlocked/rooted your phone.
OK, I think I've found the problem. It appears to be a bug in Titanium backup and restoring the usage statistics.
Someone else had a similar problem but with a different app. When he did a restore of the system data usage, he had a random app reporting excessive data use. I have also done a restore of my data use after flashing a new ROM so I did some further testing after unfreezing Tasker for a couple of days and everything appears to be fine in that there is no data use being reported.
Thanks Everyone for the suggestions. I am going to report my findings to the author of Titanium backup.

I gave the developer and the app the benefit of the doubt from the beginning. I posted my findings here and in the App forum in order to get as much help as possible and also to warn others that use the app of a potential data leakage problem. Even after repeated conversations with the developer of the app with no success, it was a user on these boards that eventually helped to solve the problem. I didn't see you offering any words of wisdom to help solve this problem so STFU!
Anyhow I posted the update in the first thread and the title will be changed to reflect that. Thank you to those who actually had something meaningful to contribute.

I saw your question when it was first posted and ignored it knowing that it was user error. And now your OP says the problem is Titanium, but it's not. It's you. Don't restore system data, it's a basic Android law.
Happened to me too, anyone know how to reset the data usage?
Edit: just had to remove all the files in /data/system/netstats
