[Q] Moving everything out of the 0 folder in 4.2

I just flashed 4.2, and it moved everything into the /0/ folder on my SD card, just like everyone said it would. Is it safe to use root explorer to move everything back out of the /0/ folder onto the root of my SD card, or will it screw something up?

im having the same problem, my nandroid is in the 0 folder, (actually its in 0/0/clockwork/ when i moved up to the root folder, made a clockwork, cwm could not find it.. ANYONE have any info on how I can get my back up?? ps i have saved it to my computer...and used the g/n toolkit to push it but doesnt show up upon recoverymode.

You should not move it to the root folder. It will cause your root partition to run out of space and screw up the phone. Move it to the sdcard partition, which is located at either:
/sdcard
/storage/sdcard0

Ok, thats what I meant to ask, I just didnt put it in the form of "/sdcard"

what is the "zero" folder for now? why is it there? why cant i get cwm to find my dman nandroid to go back to? can someone tell me wtf is going on? when i click on restore, NOTHING cwm says there is no file, but when i browse, its now in the 0/clockwork/backup folder, but /sd there is nothing, how do i move it?? when i push with the toolkit, it doenst work.. can someone PLEASE help me out?
i have tried, re lcoking the phone to erease everything.. what do i need to do? i just want my old nandroid back please.

They changed the filesystem layout for multi-user. So no, moving it out of 0 will do harm. /storage/sdcard0 now points to /storage/emulater/legacy. You could symlink some stuff around, though. Don't blame me if you screw up.
Or just wait for your recovery to be updated for 4.2's fs layout, then all should be fine. (what else breaks because of this?)

I found a more elegant method :
Create a shortcut (a symbolic link) in /data/media named "clockworkmod" that points to /data/media/0/clockworkmod.

I noticed that if I make a backup in 4.2 using cwm, it backs up to /data/media/clockworkmod. All my old backups (the ones I made before 4.2) are now in /data/media/0/clockworkmod. Is it safe to copy the contents of /data/media/0/clockworkmod over to /data/media/clockworkmod, so that I can restore my old backups if I want to ?

Soo, I know there's a lot of these threads around, but I can't find the answer I'm looking for. I'm wondering: After I flashed 4.2 I got this extra "0" folder on my internal sdcarrd. Can I just cut/paste the content of the "0" folder back to the original sdcard root? or will this have a negative effect on the storage?

I had this issue earlier so i moved everything back to the root folder and deleted "0". If you are planning on flashing a few 4.2 roms i suggest you use the latest TWRP recovery or wait for the updated clockwork recovery because everytime you flash 4.2 roms they automatically create a 0 partition so you will end up with 0/0/0 etc depending on how many you flash

I think I'll just copy the content of the "\0" folder back to the root, and stick with the ROM I'm on now. Then I'll update CWM when an update is released.

Aaargh.. I'm getting kinda pissed now..
When I try to copy the sd-content back to the root, it says that the device has stopped responding, or isn't connected. Can you tell me what is the standard root folder for the sd-content?

After installing a previous backup the was still a 0 folder so I copied all of the files to the root folder however it made the pictures unable to view

I've tried several methods to move my clockworkmod folder out of the "0" folder to the sdcard "root" to no avail.
I'm currently backing up everything from "0" to my desktop. Once that's done, how can I push the clockworkmod folder to the sdcard "root"?

Seems like there are some problems copying big folders over to the root. Try to first copy the CWM folder from your PC into some folder on the sd-root. Then, from your phone, open up a file explorer and copy the CWM folder to the root. Pretty weird, but it looks like it's working for me..
Edit: Yupp! worked for me. Hope you'll sort it out aswell.

move it to /data/media

here's how it works
before the virtual link to /sdcard was /data/media
cwm was writing under /data/media so cwm folder would show up under /sdcard as well
now the virtual link to /sdcard is /data/media/0
that's because of multiuser (even if multiuser is not working on phones)
cwm is still wriyinb to /data/media so cwm golder eoll mot show up under /sdcard
solutions
1. to copy cwm foldrr on pc: move cwm folder from /data/media to /data/media/0 that is to /sdcard then attach phone to pc and copy folder from sdcard
2. to restore from a backup on your vomputer: attach phone to pc, create cwm folder on sdcard andcopy h erebackup folis, copy cwm foldef from /data/media/0 into /dara/media
it is normal to have a /data/media/0 which means /sdcsrd
it is not normal to have /data/media/0/0 which means /sdcard/0
the latter happens on your second installation etc.

I don't care much about what's on my SD card besides my Nandroid backups so the only thing for me is: can I restore a backup from CWM if I move the "clockworkmod" folder from sdcard/0 back to the root of the SD card?
I assume there's no other adverse effects of all our files and stuff being on sdcard/0 instead of just sdcard root?

read my commeny above: yes, although cumbersone, yes

I'm thinking this is the appropriate thread to post this so here I go. I flashed the newly released 4.2 rooted stock image and there were a few problems :
1. I forgot to delete the cache/dalvik cache, which created a bootloop and completely messed up my device, and I had to wipe/factory data reset from the recovery to fix it (in which case I had to lose almost all of my data)
2. I accidently overwrote an existing nandroid backup of the previous (CM 10 stable) ROM I had made to restore just in case anything happens, so I was out of options to restore my nexus to a working state. I finally had to use the crashed ROM's nandroid backup using an advanced recovery so I had my photos, videos etc intact. I got it finally working but anyways,
3. I restored my apps+data using titanium backup. I wanted to go back to my CM10 backup which I had made using ROM manager and it was still present with the rest of my data. But when I selected the backup which made, the device restarted and gave me an error stating "SD CARD MARKER NOT FOUND" :crying:
Now I'm unable to restore or even make a new backup with ROM manager. And to add, I have like three folders for storage using up too much space on my sdcard :
1. root/sdcard - I have no idea where this came from but it sure has an awful lot of my files copied there
2. root/storage/sdcard0
3. root/storage/emulated - has two subfolders : 0, legacy
All of the above locations contain the same exact files and I just want my nexus back the way it was. I know I can flash CM10 right away but I just wanna get some help on how to delete and make changes to these added folders by properly moving the files without crashing the os.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I am having this issue as well and am very very annoyed. Please help. Thanks. I cannot get into recovery manually or otherwise. Keep getting Andy with the red exclamation mark in his chest and must remove battery to reboot.

Fu#k rom manager and CWM use TWRP an rom toolbox pro an you will be fine on 4.2 JB.

Update: got it working.. had to flash back cm10 stable, move files around and get back the old ROM manager backup and restore it. Its fine now. Not to mention the 4.2 ROM was pretty unstable on my nexus, causing several reboots and sometimes it froze (especially when I connected it to my desktop) and I had to remove the battery and put it back in to get it working. Moreover the 4.2 rom screwed up the file system, making my nexus' SD card unreadable on any desktop. It just wouldn't install the drivers whatsoever. I'd wait for cm10.1 than try any other custom 4.2 from now on.

You can download Root Browser Lite from play store, which gives you complete access to the root of your phone and internal files such as system/.

? about 4.2 sdcard structure deletion

Why is the sdcard listed in so many places. I know they are basically shortcuts to the sd because as of now I only have 2 gig free on my card and there is no room to copy/paste it or whatever.
When I look in root explorer i see /sdcard, /storage/emulated, /storage/sdcard0, and /data/media/0 all have my sd files in them.
My main problem is now quick pic sees double of everything, can I delete any of these mentioned above? I don't want to just "hide" them from quick pic, I want just one copy of each folder if possible.

I believe if you use a file explorer on the phone and not MTP, it's much quicker to just move the stuff you need to the root of the SD card and then delete the duplicates. I would wait for someone to verify that though before you proceed. Mine was doing something weird in TWRP. I tried to flash the stock 4.2 again in hopes any issues I had would be resolved. Didn't so I went to restore my CM10 data and it wasn't there. At all. I'm thinking to myself it somehow wiped everything. Nope. My files were there, but only when I flashed a fresh CM10 build. I don't know exactly what happened, but 4.2 has had some weird issues with recoveries, which were addressed for the most part.

[Q] How do I fix file permissions on SD card?

OK, I finally installed PA 2.99 beta6 which I've wanted to do for a while. First to preserve the file structure and not have /0 folders, I copied all my old SD card files to /data/media as told in the guide linked below. I'm thinking my issue started when I didn't delete the /0 folder after installing the stock 4.2.1, but now all my old SD card files have incorrect permissions for me to access them. Is there a quick and easy way to fix it, preferably from the phone? I'm gonna wipe and reinstall everything tomorrow if necessary, but I can't do it until tomorrow morning. I'm not even sure what permissions I should set to make the files accessible again. I think I may have screwed up by not setting permissions when copying files using the toolkit also. I'm still pretty noobish and I thought that was only necessary for system files. I thought the correct permissions would follow everything else. I did find that I can take a song that's in the /data/media/music file, which won't play, move it to /sdcard/music, and it plays. I tried changing permissions and owners on the non-working files to match the working files, but no luck.
I really appreciate any advice or help anybody has.

I guess that it s completely normal, as I would have only put backups to be used in this precise folder. Correct me anybody if I'm wrong, but music should be pasted in the new music folder, and so on and so on, for each media. In the first place, those files were not all put in the data/media folder right ?
So, why not try and use a file explorer, and move the content in their respective appropriate new folder, and see how it works. And that done delete the initial folders. Hope it will work.

According to the guide to keep the pre-4.2 file structure, with no /0 folders, you're supposed to ADB push all sd card files to the /data/media folder. Now I think what I screwed up on is I was supposed to delete any /0 folders but I misread the guide and didn't delete the folder. Now all of the data I pushed to the phone is in it's respective folders under data/media, such as Music and Downloads, but there is also a /data/media/0 folder with standard android folders. There is also /sdcard, with standard android folders. From my understanding, either data/media and /sdcard or /data/media/0 and /sdcard should show the same files, but neither does. If I make a change in one directory it doesn't show in the other directory. The weird part to me is that when I copy and paste a file from /data/media/Music (or any other directory there) to /sdcard, the file permissions and owners and groups of the file will change, and then I can access the file in the /sdcard directory. But if I try to apply the exact same permissions and owner and group to the file under /data/media it will still not give me access. On Root Explorer, looking at properties of a file in /data/media, the md5sum shows Access Denied, but works on /sdcard. I'm thinking it has something to do with the /data/media folder's permissions instead of the files/folders under it, but I'm kinda afraid to mess with it. When I get home in the morning I'm gonna try dumping EVERYTHING and start again, but I would love to be able to fix it first.

Again, as I said previously move your music photos apks downloads in the sdcard structure, then erase the /0 folder, you would have found your stuff, where it's ought to be, legible by their respective programs. So move your photos /data/media to your actual /sdcard/Dcim/ folder, and so on and so forth for each content, problem should be solved. It's really simple.

I understand that and that is what I plan to do to get through tonight. My question is, why is this even a problem? Is there something that I could do to not have to move the files? Not out of laziness, more out of curiosity. I still plan to dump everything because with all the crap I've tried to fix the permission issues there's no telling what I may have screwed up, but until I get to start over I'm planning to just copy everything to /sdcard. Now I just would like to know why it was an issue. Why can't I access files in the /data/media folder, or any other folder on my phone for that matter, when I'm rooted and using a root explorer? I have never seen this issue before, regardless of phone or ROM. Is this due to the new 4.2 multiuser file structure, or something I did? I appreciate your help and I apologize if my intention wasn't clear from my last post, I am at work and typing in a hurry. I started the thread looking for an easy fix and you've given me that, now I'm mostly just curious as to why it happened to begin with.

Edit: I just tried copying some alarms into the /sdcard/Alarms/ and they won't play either, but Music still does. I actually got a "Not Enough Free Space" message when trying to copy them, with 5+ GBs free on the sdcard and the files were only about 130kb. I'm just going to have to dump everything and just copy what I really have to have to the phone. If you have any other ideas I'm open to hear them, but I think its FUBARed at this point. Thanks though.

Well, if you use a root explorer, such as ES file, you have to move your alarms/rigtones notifications in telephone/system/media. Once put in here, you will have to correct the permissions to rw rr , and reboot your phone. As to why it happens like this, I guess it is related to the new structure, and also because you cannot play everything from everywhere in your device, some folders are system folders, and not every file is legible from that location. My guess in your situation is that you have twice the same content on your phone (hence the Not enough free space message), so just paste everything you need in the appropriate volume, and erase the one you have messed up with.
Might be a suggestion, but if you have a nandroid backup, just look at how and where your files are organised.
Now, however, if you have a hard time fixing this up, well you might as well save your stuff on your computer, flash a stock image, root it, install TWRP, your favorite Rom, transfer your files back from your computer, and you will have a fresh and probably better running phone.
Hope it will help you, and if you have an insomnia, just take that opportunity to browse your phone structure, so that you know where each file is located. Good luck with it .

That last part is what I did. I just wiped everything, reinstalled PA 2.99B6 and ADB pushed to /sdcard instead of /data/media. It all works perfectly now. I'm not 100% sure what the issue was before, but I still think it was the new file structure. If I go at a music file through /data/media it still won't play but will from /sdcard, which is the only place I put the files. I guess its just the way the new file structure for multi-user works. I appreciate your help. I think I'll keep the /0 folder too. Trying to get rid of it is part if why I did things that caused problems, and its gonna be part of the future of android so we might as well get used to it.

File move error or bug?

I installed Slim rom and it moved all of my previous sdcard files to a different location. I tried to use ES File Explorer to move all the data (2.85gb) to the new sdcard location. Once the process completed there's a message saying low storage space when I should have 3.25gb avail.

I checked the location where it was supposed to move the previous sdcard files to the new location and instead it created many duplicates of the current roms sdcard location (inception style) and repeated until there was no space left.

I found the previous sdcard location under mnt/shell/emulated/. I selected to move the emulated folder. I don't know if this "emulated" is some sort of special android folder that I'm not supposed to mess with or not and maybe that caused this issue.

But then, when I went to the folder where the previous files were located and browsed it, all of the files are listed as having a file size of 0.00 and clicking on properties for any folder shows 0 folder size. So I can see the files there but its as if they have been overwritten or made inaccessible. So I'm a bit pissed at this point because I can't find where the files were moved to and the old files seem to have no file size. Yet, after deleting the repeated copied info it only freed up the 3.25gb of space. So it's as if my old files are still taking up space somewhere but I can't get to them or open them.

It appears you are running a recovery that is not supported by Android 4.2.
Since android 4.2 modified the directory layout to make way for multi user support, recoveries had to be updated to flash properly.
You will need to more than likely move your data files to your computer by hand, delete all of the extra and then reimplement your data to the appropriate folder.
Make sure you update your recovery as well so you don't see this on future 4.2 flashes.
When 4.2 first released this was a common issue with recoveries. Once you get your data and apps backed up appropriately, you may need to wipe your data/internal storage to free up the "used" space. I put used in quotes because it may appear its not taking any space at all when in all actuality it is.

Hmm... latest is 2.4.1.0 but 2.3.3.1 was definitely compatible... sounds like there's a different underlying issue out of my realm of expertise. We'll have to wait for someone else to come along. Sorry man =/

I may take up your advice to connect to a pc and back up everything, format it, then move the files back though. I just don't want to duplicate the issue again. It was a huge inconvenience.
