[Q] Questions about unlocked phones - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

So, if I buy a phone that is "unlocked" from another provider like ATT, and I flash a custom ROM on it, is it still "Unlocked"? What are the disadvantages / advantages? I have a T989 but thinking about getting another phone that is unlocked but I am ignorant when it comes to this topic. I am not sure how that works. I would hate to buy an unlocked ONE X and then flash a custom ROM only to find that it no longer works on T-Mobile. Thanks for any help you may have.

OK so unlocking a phone only allows you to put a Sim card from any phone into your device. Once unlocked always unlocked.

Having an unlocked device does not affect the way your phone works functions etc. There are no disadvantages to unlocking your device. It cannot cause brick boot loops etc. When flashing anything. All it does is allow you to use another carriers Sim card and make calls texts and use there data plan on the unlocked device.

No disadvantage other than being illegal to do in the US without your carrier doing it for you. I don't see how it would ever get enforced though since only the carrier you switch to would be sure you did it and they would probably rather have your money.
I know that the OP was about buying an already unlocked phone which is still legal but I just though I would mention that in case someone reading this didn't know.

Jellybean does change how the storage is accessed you DO NOT NEED ROOT to access /data ever. That leads me to believe that app in particular is not accessing the correct mount point [ES File Explorer even gave me issues until they updated it a little bit ago.
I you ever need to update your binary that is easy enough to do all you need is the CWM flash file for SuperSU [Thread on XDA] and yes I am refering to the thread listed as Chainfire SuperSU and just flash it via recovery and that would fix the su binary itself as well as install the SuperSU app if it is not already installed.
Try ES File Explorer and see if that lets you get around your storage.
Re: can't get root permissions
Try a different app and see if root still doesn't work. If it doesn't, then flash a root .zip.

Not sure about that one it prolly does the whole rooting thing from inside android or includes other stuff.
Here I copied the link from SuperSU thread download this zip and flash it via recovery then when done wipe cache [main menu in CWM] and Dalvick cache [Advanced Menu in CWM] and restart
http://download.chainfire.eu/310/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.04.zip
SuperSU Thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053
Here is the original SuperSU thread which has links for things like how to use SU properly [for new users basically you just open any app and if SuperSU is installed from a custom recovery flash then it should pop a pop-up that asks if you want to grant Super User or deny. You can also open SuperSU and hit settings and in there is an option to set it so its default behavior is to auto allow [grant, and try not to leave this on only turn auto grant on to test then set back to prompt for security] if somehow your ROM is running to slow to give enough time to see the pop-up before it times out [doubtful something would have to be WAY off you should be good flashing the above file].

|A| FaQ. Look here if you have a question.

I made this thread to help stop people from asking the same question over again. Source: http://www.talkandroid.com/guides/beginner/android-rom-and-rooting-dictionary-for-beginners/
- What is root and how do i get it?
Rooting is the process of gaining total control of your device. That means you can go into certain files that a stock ROM can't. If you want to obtain root for your t989 please go to this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311194
- What is a ROM?
A ROM is the main firmware or operating system that your phone runs. Just like Windows 7 runs on your PC, or Mac OSX runs on your Macbook, a ROM is the main software you interact with to use your phone. It includes all the system apps (messaging, email, phone), the launcher, the notification bar, etc. Google’s Nexus line runs a “stock” Android ROM (meaning it’s unmodified) while manufacturers make significant changes to the look and feel of their ROMs before they ship them with your phone (for example: note the difference between the Samsung Galaxy S III’s software and the software on LG’s Nexus 4, they are totally different.) What you see in the android development section of this forum is a custom ROM. A custom ROM is a modified version of android. Which means developers edit the line of coding, change the look of it, and add extra features. The most common custom ROM is cyanogen mod or CM. If you are looking for a ROM that is feature heavy try a PACman ROM. If you want a stable ROM try CM 10.1 a ROM cannot brick your device it can only cause a boot loop.
- what is a kernel?
A kernel does not change the look and the feel of the phone, all it really does is tell the software how to interact with the hardware. A custom kernel is a kernel that developers have added code to, in order to create all sorts of new options and abilities. They might add code to make the phone’s processor run at a higher speed, or make the battery draw less power when the phone is in “idle” mode. A kernel can brick your device if installed wrong. Make sure it is a kernel from your devices forum.
- what is a radio?
A radio (also known as Baseband or modem) is a *firmware that allows your phone to connect to the wireless network. It allows you to connect to your data connection, WiFi, and GPS.
What is a Mod?
- a mod is simply modifying a ROM and changing it to your liking. For example: changing the battery icon to look different.
What is a brick and how do i recover from one?
When your device becomes unusable, meaning you can't do anything you are bricked. If you are hard bricked you are out of luck. All you really have when your hard bricked is a fancy paperweight. If you are soft bricked, meaning you can get into download mode you are in luck. To recover from a soft brick just go here and follow all instructions carefully:

I will add more to this later, such as odex/deodexed, recovery, backup/nandroid, and more.

It runs on the popular forum software, vBulletin.
But we also have a large amount of custom mods that were developed in house and aren't available anywhere else.
Get xenforo or ipb 3.
Both are great piece of scripts and recently vBulletin is increasing price/rates for everything including updates.
Xenforo would be a good choice if you can afford the money.Ibp is cheap comparing vB. You can have all the demos and reviews at forum-softwares.org .

Great Idea

Well.. I believe it is a great idea...
Picture this...
You have a pattern lock or password on your phone...
Someone asks to use your phone...
You input the code backwards.. i.e. if your code is 1234 you enter 4321
That enables a "guest"/safe mode for the user...
What you guys think?
It would be easier to just have a "safe" mode that's activated by choosing it either when already unlocked or when unlocking - but still using the same password.
The "backward password" thing is a cute urban legend about ATM PINs, but examination of the legend reveals the flaws in a "backward pin" idea. Say your password is "3553" or something - it would be silly to limit passwords by prohibiting those when the "safe mode" could be entered another way.
Of course, this also questions what "safe mode" really is and how it would function - would developers have to develop the functionality for this per-app ?
It's an interesting idea, but it doesn't seem useful enough to me to be worth the time and money spent in development. It might be better just to not give your phone to people who want to snoop or take it out of eyesight.

There was a ROM that had this mode.. all your texts disappear.. pictures are hidden.. background is plain.. recent calls are hidden.. stuff like that.. my idea, i guess, would be for people who do not want to make it so obvious as to making it guest mode and doing it in a hidden way
I'm still not keen on guest user idea. Nobody touches my phone..period. ..
i think its a cool idea
This is a great idea, I'd do it to all my iSheep friends that want to feel the greatness that rests in my pocket. Post the idea where it can be possible to happen in Android General... I'm guessing that'd be best for it to get some eyes on it, maybe an app dev will jump on it for you.
4.2 Jelly already has guest mode right? Shouldn't be too hard to implement this if anyone actually wants this feature..
Does it?
