Modem comparison results - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

For the last couple months, my Austin, TX LTE download speed has dropped dramatically. Not sure if this is due to Jelly Bean or because there are so many more users on my local network now.
So I tested a bunch of modems on my phone. Thought I'd share the results here.
End result is - they were all about the same.
Phone was tested in the same spot on my desk each time.
Each modem was tested 3 times and the best time posted below.
Ignore the UCLEM results, it was actually the worst. So bad, that I waited 15 minutes and the tried again, which is when it finnally got good results.

I get constant 20-30mbps down and 10-15 up here by the Arboretum.
Looks like you're signal is pretty bad.

Yeah, his signal looks terrible.

Yes. Or probably he is on H+ network with no LTE.

What speed test are you using? I was using. Speedtest from ookla. It worked fine the 1st day but seemed to have. A loss in data after that. I normally got to speakeasy.net/speedtest with my pc. And I was getting around 18 mb dl. And 2mb ul. But my phone on wifi would barly get 1mb dl. I went to the website with my phone and boom it showed me real results. On 3g. At home I get 2.03 mb dl. .44 mb ul. And wifi. I get 12.8 mb dl and 2.08 mb ul. I am currently on stock with no tweaks. So. Try a different speed test unless u notice the lack of speed
Edit: I just changed the server for the speedtest by ookla to chicago. My closest server is kalamazoo, mi. But I changed to chicago and my results were a lot closer to the websites. So try changing he server to a different one

Sprint is definately capping the WiMax through the Realm and possibly a 2nd place. I used to get 7MBps regularly on my downloads. Now I get in the 3 to 5 range. People that use Clear directly don't have this happen. I did some testing with my Clear mac address on my Epic and the download speeds were regularly much higher.

Yes. Sprint has acknowledged that there are data speed and reception issues in NYC area. My brother recently called to nag them about it several times and got 1 month credited to his account and will probably get a 2nd month if they don't do something about it soon.

There's an issue with 3G right now, as I've tested it with all of the store's demo phones, and other employees are also seeing the same results in 3G. I haven't seen any official word on what is going on, but it's been a couple weeks since I noticed the speed decrease. Hope something gets fixed soon because I don't have 4G at home, and would like to use my Tab and phone when I am not at work.
Starting to wonder if the latest PRL did something?
There is sporadic 3G service currently in NYC, not sure about other places. I have tested for 3g service in queens, manhattan and brooklyn today and it was all 1X speeds. 4G is working fine but slower than usual, I usually get about 7mpbs on average but today my max is 2mbps. Seems like everyone has switched to 4g until they fix the 3g.
By the way, if your in NYC (or in the northeast), the best and most reliable servers to test with are Newark, NJ and Portland, ME on the ookla speedtest.net app.

Here's my 4G/3G speeds in my bedroom:
Here are some of the differences between 3G and 4G (in the one area oh Phoenix that it's up)
Where I live is NOT where 4G is available but it's very close.
In my house I downloaded a game that's 2mb in size from the market and it took about a minute and a half to download and install. hen tried to download the 102 mb data pkg that comes with the game and after 15 minutes it froze and stopped about 30 mb into the download. I uninstalled the app and I went down the street to the area that has 4G and the app downloaded and installed in less than 2 seconds. Then downloaded the data pkg in about 4 minutes total. I think Sprint owes me a serious service credit, especially since I pay their stupid $10 premium data charge every month.

Some thing is going on with sprint even up in WI near Milwaukee. I started complaning to them about 3G after that sprint news letter add thingy came out in june or July because it said "we are working to improve the network in "my towns name hear". Well they asked me for speed test data and what speeds I was talking about. I email data to them and over the 2 to 3 weeks of emailing guess what happend to 3G..... yep it got slower :-( I can't even watch youtube on my phone in low def with out it buffering many times over and over. Its getting to the point where I want to chuck the phone! I/WE pay for a nice SAMOLED screen and we can't ever watch youtube. WTF SPRINT!
I just get so sick of there fbs if my market in my town is not going to be upgraded cuz there are working on one of your citys (yes u guys reading) then they should man the F up and just say it not going to happen.

Modem comparison using SpeedTest app

Hey guys. I have been using the out of the box EG30 modem up until today. Never had LOS and for the most part had good 3G speed but kind of crappy 4G speed. Today I finally decided to flash the EL13 modem.
Using SpeedTest app (with same location) I did FIVE speed test on EG30 modem and FIVE speed test on EL13 modem. The test were done at the same time and in the same exact location. I did test on the 3G and 4G speeds. The rom I used on all test was CALKULIN's 2.5 rom. Here are the results:
EG30 modem: 3G avg = 1.35 DL, 184 UL and 97 ping
4G avg = 3.28 DL, 355 UL and 143 ping
EL13 modem: 3G avg = 1.51 DL, 190 UL and 93 ping
4G avg = 4.2 DL, 594 UL and 123 ping
As you can see from my test flashing the EL13 provided moderate increases in DL and UL speed. Like on my EG30 modem, I have not experienced any LOS yet (have only been on this modem for a few hours though.)
Feel free to post your comparisons between modems...it may help someone decide whether they want to flash another modem.
Nice. Thanks.

How about EG30 vs EK02 vs EL13?
Now that the EG30 is avail to download and restore to stock, I'm interested in determining which modem pulls down faster d/l (all subject to area).
Also, did you notice any screen / transition lag on EL13 compared to Eg30?
My signal strength and d/l speeds seem the same but my u/l speeds do seem much faster, not the results I hoped for but it's an improvement lol. Can't test 4g...not sure it really exist.

must be nice to be able to get anywhere remotely close to that dl speed, best I seen ever here is 700Kbps
EG31 next.
I have a hunch that it's the fastest, but, that can change from minute to minute, place to place, phone to phone, etc to etc.
Though getting 3G speeds like that you seem to be in the perfect place to actually test these modems.

I've tried this before and even on the same phone with 10-20 back to back tests in the exact same spot, speeds vary so much, it's really hard to say what causes the speed changes.
The network has many, many users on it and their use is not controllable. If 10 users on the tower are tethered and DLing a torrent, that will affect everyone on the tower...
Unless you can control who is on the tower and how much bandwidth the tower has available, these tests aren't very reliable.
If you want something that *might* be meaningful, you'll need same phones with different modems side by side and running the test at identical times. You'll need to do dozens of trials and vary the time of day and week. Over time a trend will occur and then you can begin to make inferences about THAT tower in THAT area ONLY.
You might also consider a different testing software. Speed Test, for me, has always been highly variable. I've tried different apps on the market but I seem to get the most consistent results using speakeasy.net (website) rather than the application on the phone.
I am on EG30 modem and my wife's phone is on the new EK02 modem. I do side by side testing at home and at restaurants where we eat. There is no improvement. At any one time doing the same test on 3G and 4G, the speed difference can be + or -(10-50%) with no clear indication of which one is the better modem. Tried both the speedtest and speakeasy.net website. I have done this 50-60 times for 2 months before and after the update. There is no way I can draw a conclusion about which modem is better so I left mine at EG30 running Calk 2.0 which is based on EK02 rom and kernel.
Our 3g speed in Tampa/St Pete is anywhere from 200kbps to 2000kbps with the average of around 500kbps. Our 4G averages around 2000kbps but there are plenty of area around town including our house where we can regularly pull 5000kbps and up to 10MBPS if I hold my mouth just right. Testing with our own wifi shows that we can consistently get the same speed. Testing with 3g/4g, no way to predict which phone will post a higher score.
Just did 6 consecutive tests with speakeasy.net using 4g with 2 bars and the results are as follow(in Mbps):
3.5, 1.7, 1.2, 3.4, 4.61, 3.14
I moved 6ft to the left:
1.19, 1.4, then I switched to a server that was farther away and got 2.0
Trying to get a consistent number is futile but getting a range of number is not.

Why are my data speeds 10x faster all of a sudden??

Well I have been running with ICS ROMs for two weeks now but I don't think that's it. Maybe its the FC modems??
I live in an area surrounded by radio towers and they usually interfere and thus get horrible data speeds.
But all of a sudden my data speeds are as quick as my wifi even in my house. I just might use that instead of wifi
Anyway, just wondering what everyone else is seeing. Anyone use a GB based ROM with fc modem and reported good data speeds??

There's a good chance that Sprint has upgraded towers in your area as part of its "Network Vision" infrastructure upgrades. Some users are reporting a significant boost in 3G speeds. I've been using the new FC06/FC07 modems without much of an speed improvement.. where are you located?
I live in the outskirts of Tampa. All I know is that my data speeds are horrid on blazer/calks gb roms. I will test some things out though

There's no modem in the world that it makes the data speed 10x faster. If there's modem like that I'll buy it!
For me, I used almost every modem available for E4GT but there's no huge difference.
So, just like someone said, there's a chance that Sprint they added a tower near by you.

Ok, I used the speed test app and it showed my speeds to be almost exactly the same(GB vs ICS). I went to my Calk 2.9 back up with EL29. Calk ICS 1.1 with FC07.
However, its clear that my speeds are faster. Maybe its just smoother but my browsing is more pleasant because everything just loads faster. Im confused lol
Im in the process of downaloding the FC07 modem now. Im running stock rooted EL29 Kernel and ROM with FB27 modem and my speeds are about average.
EDIT Following results after testing
Stock rooted EL29 ROM/Kernel with FB27 Modem Speedtest.net app

3G Ping 396 / 0.24 Down / 0.27 Up Ping 325 / 0.20 Down / 0.09 Up Ping 282 / 0.43 Down / 0.02 Up
Back to Stock rooted EL29 ROM/Kernel with FB27 Modem Speedtest.net app
4G Ping 224 / 3.92 Down / 1.17 Up
3G Ping 515 / .004 Down / 0.02 Up Ping 315 / 0.22 Down / 0.03 Up
I went back to FB27 modem because i noticed a lot of signal fluxuation with the FC07 modem. I would go from full bars, to half to none to full to none to half..
Im on the 4th floor of an office building with a window and my desk is close to the window. For testing purposes i tested, flashed modem, tested, flashed modem and tested. All back to back. Time elapsed was about 20 minutes.
I also flashed the modems twice with a full power on and power off in between. I let the unit sit for a few minutes after reboot to settle down.

Just as an FYI, they don't always have that updated for certain areas. I used to be locked at no faster than 1.1 - 1.2 Mb down on 3G in my house (actually ran Sprint Mobile Broadband as my primary connection for a few years), but just recently I began seeing speeds routinely in the 1.5 - 2.0 Mb down range despite there being nothing listed on the network enhancement site in my area.
Is this good or bad

I typically see around 0.1-0.2Mb/sec. Just checked i'm getting around 0.8Mb/sec. Still horrible but better. My 4g speeds are great at 7Mb/sec, but uses up too much battery

ATT UCAMA4 vs UCAMC3 Modem results

Mileage may vary depending on your particular situation (geographic location, ROM, sobriety, etc), but in my case I found a significant improvement using the ATT MC3 modem over the ATT MA4 modem I had installed. Although this is not the most scientific test it does represent a Q&D (Quick & Dirty) comparison of WiFi and Mobile Data speeds. I'm currently running CleanROM v4.9 (based on XXDMC3 International Build) and had the ATT MA4 modem installed. Using SpeedTest app, I ran two WiFi tests (averaging the results) and two mobile data tests (also averaging the results). I then flashed the new ATT UCAMC3 modem... and ran the exact same tests.. also using the same local server for all 8 tests. As stated, I found improved download and upload speeds, particularly on my WiFi network (see results in attached png). I did try to mitigate variables by running all eight tests within minutes of each other. Take it for what it's worth (one user's results), but in my situation, I'll be sticking with the ATT UCAMC3 modem.

I did try to mitigate variables by running all eight tests within minutes of each other. Take it for what it's worth (one user's results), but in my situation, I'll be sticking with the ATT UCAMC3 modem.

Disregard. I found it

Current Roms: CleanROM Ace 8 (Note 2), AOKP (Galaxy Nexus), Nexus 7 Stock
Well done doctor...
Thank you Sir...g
Good stuff DQ thanks for posting up
I just flashed it and tested before and after. My signal strength didn't change at all. 4 bars/-88dBM. High 30's-mid 40's down, 11-12 up before and after. In Columbus, Ohio.

MC3 won by a landslide lol

Anyone who knows anything about networking will know that latency (the ping) is more important than the download. A +2mbps improvement with higher ping is worthless.
If you're downloading a 1gb file @ 7mbs with a 23ms ping how would that be better than 19mbs @ 80ms?
Ping is only important when sending time sensitive information like gaming, or reflex testing.

I'm assuming you're referring to wifi? Wifi testing is not indicative of how well the modem is because that's one variable you can control. I still have the old K7 modem and with speed at 25d/25u with 12ms ping. Then again, my wifi is pretty strong and consistent, so I don't know what's going on with the OP's Internet. The only measure here would be mobile data, and it's not worth it to have an extra 2mbps at the expense of +50ms.

Excactly right.
You are looking at the upload speed. He 2.5'd his download speed.

Do we had a confirmation if this works for the bell in Canada?

Why would you want a radio that is not made for your carrier you don't need a att modem on your bell or Canada phone stick to a carrier radio for best services

I actually noticed a slow in speeds with the UCAMC3 modem. I didn't test wifi though. I'm using Cleanrom 4.9 also. Tested in Long Beach California.
Update: I flashed the new MC3 RIL and speeds have improved to be on par with the old MA4 modem. So if you're using Cleanrom 4.9 I recommend updating the RIL if you're going to use the new MC3 modem.

Probably due to the high pings.

I just noticed this sorry. That 50ms could have been caused by other people on the network using resources. Same for the data speeds.
It's possible to double your data speed and keep the same latency. The distance the data travels varies by the location of the sever you're communicating with.
And the speed of your connection varies by the speed if the connection on both ends (yours and the server).
You could have the best data speeds known to man and the information could still take 300ms to get there and back.
I'm not knocking the importance of a good ping. But a high ping isn't going to prevent you from having great data speeds.

Per speedtest.net, my old (UCAMA4) ping times were 14ms (WiFi), 52ms (LTE). My new (UCAMC3) ping times are 13ms (WiFi), 48ms (LTE).
Using Miscom International Rom, I had better signal with MA4 than MC3. At the spot with 1 bar and can't make any phone call for MC3, i have 2 bar and can call with MA4
So i had to switch back the modem and kernel to MA4
I just went back to MA4. MC3 had worse reception and was having problems with my home Wifi. 5mhz Wifi also wasn't working anymore.

Just wanted to chime in on my experience.
On CR4.9 and Solavei (T-mobile), I also saw an improvement in network speeds on MC3 modem over MA4, here in Los Angeles area. Reception saw big improvements. Areas where I'd normally have 1bar now gets 2-3bars. Areas where I had already have good signal is now getting full reception.

LTE - South Florida (Fort Lauderdale) - Initial Thoughts: Not Impressed

Looks like T-Mobile has enabled some of the LTE towers near Ft Lauderdale airport. My initial thoughts are unimpressed - getting on average 6 mb/s on SpeedTest for the Hollywood, FL server. Results attached.
I've also tried a different APN and similiar results. My only guess at this point is they are still fine-tuning the towers.
Anyone care to take bets as to how long this will take to get locked?
