Hey guys, this is my first post on here but been a member for a while. Been a member since I've had my og evo 4g. Now i have a s3 but I've been wondering what you guys like or prefer more...TW or custom roms?
Quick side story:
I like touchwiz and the stock Samsung features/apps but also like the few improvements of 4.2 or even 4.1.2 for the other s3's. Because of this I tried finding 4.2/4.1.2 TW custom rom for tmobile s3 but failed and accidently bricked my s3 (flashed international rom...I know, I feel so stupid. I'll read more next time). Anyway its at samsung being repaired. But this made me begin to wonder if anyone else on here felt the way I do of Touchwiz and Aosp.
Back to the topic though, which do you guys prefer stock TW or custom roms like 4.1.2/4.2 and why?
Also any suggestions on what I could do (when i get my s3 back) since I kinda like both would be greatly appreciated.
Which do you like, Tw or aosp?
Why do you like the choice you made?
Why don't you prefer Touchwiz or Aosp?
Are there any features you like from both?

I love the stock option on the wicked rom by evil1art. And I have a question, they repair your s3 or send you a new one if you bricked it? Wouldn't they know you tried to modify it and void your warranty?
I prefer TW. I don't understand why people want ASOP. It's missing so many essential functions.
I much prefer aosp. Specifically speaking, pacman or paranoidkangdroid roms. They're so much smoother, faster, better battery performance, and customization far beyond your needs.

I like like its customization...plus thats the only way of getting 4.2/4.1.2 on the t-mobile s3 as of right now. 4.2 also improves battery life. But I really like TW and the stock camera/features/apps that come with it.

Yes, exactly why I like aosp roms but my problem is I also like the look and some of the stock features of TW. Basically want a mixture of stock and aosp features. So I'm guessing there's no way of getting the look, features and camera on one of these roms?

Techinically it should void it but it's hard-bricked, wont turn on/charge/nothing, so no way of telling. I just told them it wouldnt turn on at all, left out the part about flashing roms though lol. Im guessing they'll replace the motherboard, thats what happened to others who've been in my situation here on xda. But if they cant fix like that they'll be willing to give me a new one. Right now my repair status is on "repair in progress". Either way I'll be grateful of getting back my/a perfect working s3.

+1. I am currently using liquidsmooth and it is really nice. But there are a few little bugs. Call volume and headset issues, common in aosp roms. Going back to TW. Bugs aside though, I prefer aosp.

Yeah thats true, thats something I don't like about aosp roms. Its like the roms are great enhancements to the is but you have to deal with these little bugs that aren't that bad just kinda annoying.
I'm considering just leaving my s3 stock when I get it back.

I'm on same boat. I hate to admit three were days we hated TW. But Samsung had done great job lately.
You can always try some combinations. .like stock rom+nova/Apex launcher for aosp look but has TW features. .or 4.2 roms with nova launcher and GS3 theme for stock look but latest features like quick settings. Or there is a rom 'Dandroid' rom which already themed to look like aosp. Also there are new apps that offer same thing 4.2 is offering like quicksettings.. I'm running heavily debloated stock rom with action launcher.. Great battery life and I can still enjoy all that features I came to like from this new touchwiz nature UX ui.. I hope you find what works for you. .

The GS3 was the first phone I've ever purchased that I instantly was really impressed with it stock. Samsung did a bang-up job with the latest Touchwiz, seriously.
But the tinkerer in me and the desire for optimization made me take a look at custom ROMs anyway. What hit the spot for me was Wicked. It's everything you love about stock, with lots of options for tweaking. It's really a brilliantly built ROM. I currently use it with the stock kernel, but with Nova Prime Launcher over it.
With the latest version of Wicked (v8), it's hard to believe how much goodness the developer has packed under the hood. You really have to play around with it to appreciate it. And again, all while retaining all that's great about stock Touchwiz.
I've toyed with the idea of checking out a CM10 / AOSP type ROM, but there's a lot I'd miss about stock. So until I get a second GS3 to tinker with (which is never), I'll most likely be sticking with TW based custom ROMs for the long haul.
I was fine with TW except for the home screens and very limited number of rows and columns that couldn't be changed.
I just use a launcher now. I might try a TW based ROM - but what I really need is the native wifi calling - I'd try a non-TW ROM if I didn't need it.

Wicked comes with an optional 5x5 modified Touchwiz launcher.
I prefer pure android experience as my 1st android device was a Nexus S.
1st day I got my GS3, couldn't stand the BS that came w/ touchwiz. It made the phone feel very sluggish. 1st thing I did was switch over to Paranoid Android and immediately you can feel how much faster everything responds.
Simple test is opening your app drawer and then pushing the Home button. TW rom will have a lag 1-2 seconds. AOSP/AOKP/CM is pretty instant.
If you are afraid of risks of going custom and bricking, no wrong in staying stock. Stock is more stable obviously and custom does have the price of instability for performance.

The home button delay was just a setting in S - Voice. Turn off that one switch and that delay is gone.
Most of that "BS" isn't Touchwiz, but carrier added bloat. TW based custom ROMs like Wicked take care of all that junk, even the S apps if you don't want them.

I got my phone rooted.. Now what ROM would you recommend? I've moved over from HTC Sense.. so I would like something that has some sense alternatives like favorite contacts widget, bookmarks, and weather. So what would you recommend for me?
FreeGS3...all kinds of mods, a good theme, update me so you can customize your way...you will be very happy..link is in my sig below
I'm loving FreeGS3, but really try them all. Ask yourself a question - Do you want to stay with touchwiz or go with a aosp Rom.
Currently there is only a handful of each. Read the OP before you flash anything. And it wouldn't hurt to backtrack a few pages from the last one and get caught up on what bugs people are talking about.

I don't know either ROM. They say developers are flocking to S3 but there is so few ROM's compared to HTC why is that? Like I said I een a fan of HTC Sense and I prefer whatever has the closest feel to it.. the favorites widgets, animated weather, Messenger Widgets I just can't seem to find any variation of for Android. The UI is just so clean of a feel to it what would come closest of the two?

I've always liked AOSP roms(CM9/10, AOKP) but dang man Sammy got it down with the GS3's TW so i find myself running FreeGS3 since its still TW with extras(mods and themes baby!) but yeah like everyone else is saying try them out. My other rom i keep up with though are the Cm10 Nightlies.
FreeGS3 user here. Best Rom I've flashed so far and the developer (clark44) is on top of things and talks to his userbase regularly via irc and responds relatively quickly in thread.
I came from the evo4g so I know the feel.
I installed a sense clock lookalike and when I have some free time plan to at least see if I can install a similar contacts/dialer app if I can't get the real deal. Everything else is awesome though, and the TW calendar is definitely better.

I think the reason theres not a lot of roms for the gs3 yet is that the phone is relatively new. Wait... we'll have a ton of them in a month or 2.
Anything with an aosp base for sure. Touchwiz sucks although sense is htc's touchwiz so its about taste i guess. I would flash freegs3 or some other tw based rom and use the dualboot setup as a means of trying some aosp flavor so you can have both while u make up ur mind

Also using joshs jellybomb domination for a theme setup. Now while I like this set up I haven't yet tried others much because I have liked it so far mad if I like a Rom I tend to stick with it. Personally I don't mind at all having just a handful of good roms. I'll take quality over quantity any day. Of the devices with tons of roms how many of those are either slight variants of other roms or just not quality? I mean how many roms does there need to be really as long as the themes/mods are plentiful? My 2 cents.

Ok.. btw since CWM it won't work with the CWM Touch Recovery either? The non touch recoveries really suck.
Alright so we got our jelly bean update and so far all the stock based custom ROMs are stable from the most part, mod have been added for speed tweaks and battery life. So far so good. Now what? Lol what do we do in the meantime? Just find mods and see what people would like and see if they can be implemented in ROMs? I've flashed almost everything and TW on every ROM is stable if the source was official JB for t999. The AOSP ROMs are stable for the most part with very minor things not working. Kernels have squeezed as much performance from the board of this phone as much as possible (don't expect any kernel to bring you 7000+ on quadrant). So what now? The o my progress that's happening mostly is getting aosp 4.2 on this by tw is descent in my opinion. What will you guys be doing in the meantime? Look at other threads and find mods?

It's refreshing not having to keep up with the grind every now and then. Especially with the holidays upon us, time is scarce and free time is better spent doing other things than dealing with crackflashing habits.
Exactly. What now is what annoys me about xda. It makes it seem like people don't actually enjoy their phone. I actually found xda by mistake back she. I had a vibrant. I actually left for a while because I was pretty much the same way. Flashing and reseting y phone pretty much daily trying out new ROMs. When things got stable I asked the same question as op. Realized I never actually used my phone. I don't root very much but come here for advice and for new news. I've tried flashing roms but I actually use my phone and have a life to live. Be happy things are stable. That's my advice. Its an addiction.

Lol actually, i do use my phone. Back when we had ICS, there was jelly bean but i kept going back and fourth between jelly bean AOSP and stock TW ics. found that TW was solid but had a few issues with Bluetooth which i used with my Bluetooth headsets. So I was on AOSP and back and fourth. I have been on JB TW since it dropped and haven't flashed since. lol so i guess im just adjusting to not flashing weekly. But even when flashing, i would use my phone pretty often. for now, im going to just stay here, add the mods that i want, and look for the ones i need (skip track with volume rocker w/ screen off) and then i will delete the app from my phone and come here every 2 weeks.
Now we wait for 4.1.2 so we can get multi view like the note 2.
Other than that, most of us will have moved on to SGS4 by the time the S3 gets 4.2.

I thankfully got this out of my system back with my Vibrant. At some point I just realized that I was doing... Nothing with my phone. I'd switch out ROMs and the like, but ultimately.. I just went back to stock with a custom kernel and a few tweaks for speed and performance. But mostly had it set to spiffy fast and ultra usable.
I've done the same with my GS3. I didn't care much for the ROMs I have seen out there, so went back to stock. Now I have Jelly Bean on here, with a custom kernel and rooted. Got it running outrageously smooth and fast. What more do I need? My phone is as good as it is going to get until 4.2 and hopefully whatever comes after that.
So I use it. I show it off to people. I achieve great computing and processing needs when out and about. I like my phone. I don't need anything more out of it than what I got.
I just hang out at XDA for if anything new ( feature, app, etc. ) comes out that seems neat, if an error crops up, or quick fixes.

Fo sho its the Rom to have and use is the Chemistry Rom because I have a GS3 fleshed to boost and all my main functions I need all work with this ROM. My mms and my voice mail. And with Ktweaks kernel I am getting some serious battery time on this ROM so its over all the perfect ROM right now to have. Most of the roms in the Dev section are rock solid (minus a few bugs which are normal in almost everything) the only way to figure out which you are going to like is to read the OP of a few that sound interesting, flash and take it for a drive (give a day or two typically) unless you can't stand it. MOAR, TPR, and FAT ASS (Cartman Edition of TPR) are all great TW based roms, offer all the fun of normal TW.. Incredible themeing options via Morphology.
Free GS3 is another great rom (from what i hear) as well. I haven't personally ran this one either, but does work with Morphology for themeing options.
Just scan the dev section. You'll find a good fit.

Problem is it's 4.1.2, and I heard idle battery drain was improved in 4.2.2,but i can't recall my battery before this, since I recently got an extended battery.
Your opinion on whether or not I should chang to leaked "stock" MC3, or just stay.
I'm thinking about switching because I miss motions, parts of Svoice, and multi window was added in the leak.

So make a android and try it. It doesn't really matter what we think. It works great for TW. There is a rdf for md4 so an OTA will probably be out sooner then later, is my guess.

Isn't it true that it takes time for a Rom to settle in before the battery is at its best? I rather not have to do that

In my experience, it's only a day or two before it's settled.

LiquidSmooth>TouchWiz
I would suggest sticking with Android 4.2.2 since TouchWiz MC3 only has a few extra features which to me are mainly gimmicks while AOSP 4.2.2 is much better with a lot less loaded crap on your phone and it's easier to modify in my opinion.
I personally don't use Nightly ROMs since they tend to be unstable which is not worth it. I am currently using LiquidSmooth version 2.2. The great thing about LiquidSmooth is that it's based on Cyanogenmod+AOKP+SlimRoms+Extra=LiquidSmooth. Also with less bloat that means that there is less extra stuff sucking on your battery in an AOSP ROM. A very smooth, stable and fast ROM with no bloat unlike stock TouchWiz.
Or if you want to stick with TouchWiz I would recommend a custom ROM such as strongsteve's Odexed Blue ROM, very nice ROM and much more professional and nicer looking compared to other modified TouchWiz ROMs in my opinion.

I'm running Freezas MC3 leaked rom and it runs smooth. The new features are great. Apps like titanium backup or root explorer can take care of any bloat the TW roms have.

Yeah, I suppose you can remove the bloat manually but I find that a bit annoying. But it depends on what you like and want. Personally, my phone would pick up like 5/10 calls on TouchWiz while on AOSP ROMs it picks up all calls I make. I don't know why that is but hey it works.
I am running sons of android 4 . There is no battery drain issues on this rom. I can go all day with lots of use and still average well above 50 percent battery life .
I haven't used a 4.2 ROM in awhile, does anyone know if they fixed the issue with sound not coming through a dock when it is connected ?
Yeah its worth it! You get a more features

+1. ALTHOUGH, you also lose all of the Samsung features though, but I rarely used them (motion, smart stay, etc.) and they are mainly gimmicks to me. Multi-view could come in handy I suppose but I would just rather use the task manager, multi-view I would use all the time if I had the Note, not on the GS3 though.
If you want an awesome 4.2.2 ROM I HIGHLY recommend DeviantXone. It just got updated today with loads of new stuff. Great ROM and great devs.
If you still want a touchwiz launcher and android 4.2.2 AND paranoid android settings try out JellyBam, I ran that ROM for like a month

The only TW feature that I really miss is the stock video player. I loved floating that guy around and found it really easy to use. I tried the other floating players on the Play Store, but didn't really like them all that much. I currently use MXPlayer and allow the audio to play in the background. I deal with it, but once in a blue moon I'll restore my stock rom just to experience the glory of the floating video player.

So I switched to android 4.2.2 a while ago, on cyanogenmod nightly. But I saw mc3 was leaked, and want to try it.
Problem is it's 4.1.2, and I heard idle battery drain was improved in 4.2.2,but i can't recall my battery before this, since I recently got an extended battery.

I suggest that if you're interested in a ROM, go ahead and try it out. Different people like different things, so it's up to you to find out what works for you. With Titanium Backup and nandroid backups, it's easy to switch to different ROMs without losing critical data.
Personally, I ROM jump a lot. If I see something that looks interesting, whether it's 4.1, 4.2, TouchWiz, or AOSP, I'll check it out and run it for a few days. If I don't like it, I'll either nandroid back or flash another ROM I found interesting. That's what I love about Android.
My bad, I'm working on a ROM as well! So when I get done you should give my ROM a try...I'm trying to make it fully stable

IMHO, if I wanted an AOSP ROM I would have gotten a Google Phone. Buying a brand name phone will always come with brand-specific bloat.

Yea, but the nexus 4 isn't on sprint (yet?) And the galaxy nexus is pretty old specs wise. If one person wanted the latest and greatest, and they were on sprint, it would most likely have to be a brand phone...

Both. Hybrid that is.

For whatever reason, I get significantly better battery life using tw roms vs aosp. I prefer the look of aosp though. Battery life is winning the battle right now and I'm on TW
I have always preferred an aosp rom but they do not always offer all the goodies.. like mhl, or t-mobile wifi calling for example.. definitely always had better battery life for me, more free ram etc..

I dunno. That's a tough one. They both have their pros and cons. I can't honestly say that I think one is better than the other. If I had a low end device that might be a different story. I've been sticking with TW lately.
Ever since the s3 I've been sticking to tw since they offer some goodies that i find convenient.. And also the battery life has been way better for me

TouchWiz + rovo89s Xposed framework + one of the many tweaked kernels = better than any AOSP rom I've used. Just my own preference though ^_^

After trying pretty much every ROM compatible with my TMO S4, I keep coming back to the TMO TW ROMs. Most importantly, you can't get wi-fi calling any other way. But, as Slim TW ROMs have become more common and my comfort level with making changes has risen, I have given up the idea of dual booting with an ASOP/GE/MIUI/etc. ROM as my daily driver & TW for wi-fi calling, and am now back to focusing on getting as stripped-down a TW as possible. I care nothing for eye candy and just want the quickest & most stable setup, and TW has fit the bill best for me.
TW (by a slight margin)
I prefer TW because of the camera
AOSP is still very snappy but TW is catching up to that standard (for me)
I use stock TW unrooted 4.3 btw
For me it depends on what is available at the time. Right now I've got the latest 4.3.1 cyanogenmod nightly:

AOSP all the way, I hate touchwiz it's so ugly.
TouchWiz seems to have much better battery life. I do prefer stock because I hate a lot of extra cruft but if that can be removed, it's not so bad.
Plus Wi-Fi calling is awesome for battery life.
I know a certain someone has gotten wifi calling to work on aosp.. Still waiting to get a hold of our myself tho..

On the S4 AOSP?
I know it works on AOSP for the HTC One, but if you know someone who has it working on the S4 AOSP roms, you should advise that person that there is a considerable bounty built up of people willing to click the donate button a few times for a working installable Wifi Calling APK.
interesting to read the comments. I've been going back and forth between TW and AOSP ROMS. Is having the newest Android release the only major advantage of AOSP over TW? I don't think the look of AOSP is a valid reason since you can install launchers (i.e. Nova Launcher) to get the AOSP look on a TW ROM.

exactly.. I love aosp but im using tw with nova. I gotta have battery life
what changes does samsung make kernel side? Are the improvements made to the asop kernel? It does seem like TW has better battery life...
also if someone has wifi calling ported... why is this staying in the shadows??
I like cm 10.2 stable, my daily driver, but when wicked v9 comes out, I'm going to be jumping on that real quick.
