[Q] Galaxy nexus lags over time? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

So, background information. I am running apex launcher trinity kernel and android revolution. I have read ahead to 2048kb and seeder on aggresive and such. And i changed the interactive governer "hispeed_freq" to 1344000 a.k.a 1.3ghz
So why is it that my phone starts to lag flying through the drawer and homescreens after a while. Only a reboot will fix this, and then it'll be fast as lightning. But then again after a while it slows down incredibly and i close all the apps and it's still there.

its not just you, many guys are having the same issue, regardless of speed or settings or free ram
it just happens at random and fixes itself by changing wallpapers
but if u use a live wallpaper, it will always be smooth so try that

Try another rom. This happens on almost all 4.2.2 roms. Those that don't suffer are those roms that are close to stock as possible or void of bloatware.

Then you probably are one of the lucky (like me) who may have a problem with the eMMC chip. There is a bug that affects some August 2012 models that leaves you phone slow as hell when you start running out of free space. Look around and try flashing a rom called Cataclysm (dont forget to do a factory reset, it helps with this problem), the dev made a workaround that helps alot.

The following roms I have tried and are smooth are Atom, Vanir, Purity, Rasbean. This rom are void of bloatware that is why they are fast and smooth. Pair them with anarkia, trinity or fancy kernels.

[Help] Lots of freezes and crushes after updating to 4.0.5

Hi,
I've had my Archos G9 80 updated to the latest android official 4.0.5 from and since then i'm expriencing lots of crushes and freezes. I'm getting them randomly with no specific app working.
Also, i have tried to do full formats (Android + Data), and still having same issues.
Does anyone have any idea what else i can try?
Thanks.
I had lots of freezes too (not only with the latest firmware). They seem to be gone since I changed the CPU govenor from "hotplug" to "interactive". I'm not sure yet that it was the reason, but try it and let us know if it helps.

Yes, can this be done from the phone itself? Within the ROM?
You can set this in any tool that is intended for overclocking. I don't overclock, I only changed the Govenor.
I use "SetCPU". ("No-frills CPU Control" should do the same.)
So does this have any other effects on the phone?

Nothing too serious. Your CPU is clocked dynamically so it doesn't run full speed when there is nothing to compute(save energy). To my understanding the govenor is basically a policy to manage how quickly the frequency steps up/down on changing CPU load. So "powersave" is supposed to save energy but make the system a little less reactive than "interactive" Governor for example. I think I read somewhere "hotplug" deactivates the second core on low load situations, I suspect for some strange reason my device might have crashed sometimes on trying to wake up the sleeping second core. Well maybe I'm wrong, that's why I'm interested if it helps others.
I didn't notice any change in battery lifetime, mostly it's the display anyway that drains the battery. Everything is running well, battery lifetime is great too and no crash/freeze at all since i changed that setting and it crashed almost every damn day before, no matter if it was Honeycomb or ICS.
I downgraded the device to 4.0.4 and since then, no crushes.. I guess for some reason 4.0.5 isn't stable on my device.. ill stick with this version unroll they get another one out..
To downgrade, just install official update file of the version you want to upgrade to..

That seems to be my problem too. Setcpu requires root. is there a very easy way to do this, just to run this setcpu? There used to be a z4 tool, but can't seem to find it anymore.
Edit I see that I need superoneclick. Will temporary root suffice or will I need permanent root to change the governor setting.and keep it so.
Unfortunately all know temp root variants tend to brake things- im Honeycomb sound, in ICS 3d driver.
The only real option is to enable SDE and use custom firmware.
As for freezes- try reinstalling apps. Direct upgrade from Honeycomb does not work for all

hey, back to topic
5 days without freeze with govenor "interactive". i witched back to "hot plug" this morning and had to reboot my tablet 2 times today. for my case, "interactice" seems to help against random freezes.

Man I'm really pissed.

@IrishStuff09: you did reformat for ics or upgrade from honeycomb? the best way is to start from scratch and skip upgrades.

I do not experience this issue. When you flashed the rom, did you do a clean install? Have you formatting the device?
Yup.. I format everything.. I use the touch recovery and just use every option that it provides and wipe everything.. It even does it when there is nothing installed. I usually delete almost all the useless system apps that I don't use like the google music app and all of the ones civato provides... I even change the animation settings to .5 in the developer section.. should I turn them off all together?

The animations should not have anything to do with it. Does this only occur on that rom? Have you tried other roms and experienced that issue?
not many other roms out there.. I have used stock and his.. had the same issue on both.. Also happens on my brother's a500.. it usually happens when unlocking and going into any app.. it sits there for a few seconds and then opens whatever it is i opened

This is starting to sound like a hardware issue. Before that is concluded, you could:
- Make sure the governor is not set to "conservative"
- Try a clean install of CM9
If the problem still arises, its most likely a hardware issue.
I'm using the OC kernel and have it to 1500.. I also always leave it on performance.. I figure it would kill my battery life but I don't use it much.. and i tried cm9 also.. too many issues as of right now

It doesn't seem it can be anything else but a hardware issue in that case.
NB. Overclocking to a high frequency can cause instability and bring about that issue (but since you experienced it on the stock rom, its quite likely not to be that).
the overclocking helps to speed it up a tad bit.. for the most part it just lags.. i did a clean install just now
Thought I would jump in. Stock ics would slow down and lag on me, jittery transitions poor performance in games or movies, but it took an hour not a few minutes. However testing the T20 kernel before the release kernel had that exact issue, bogging and lagging within minutes.
His release kernel doesnt do it, and flex extreme as well as my cm9 builds don't, even with T20 kernel. Consider flashing that kernel to see what happens.
Side note...what issues did you have with cm9? And what release? My build 1 has been running for 3 days no reboots stable as can be undervolted and OC when needed. Something to maybe think to try to see if it persists. T20 kernel works fine with it too.

That reminds me...setting a screen off profile with the same min/Max speed can cause issues with that, give Max a notch or two higher. And don't have it change the governor leave it the same. So like interactive screen on Myst nit be conservative screen off, doesn't work that way.
Tapatalked from my Galaxy S II.
I had the same issue on stock. I noticed there are 2 weather applications installed (version 1 and version 2) immediately after I disabled the old weather application (version 1) this stopped happening. I used the ICS GUI to do the disable.
This might not be the case in custom rom, but is true for stock. Post reply and let me know if this fixed it for you also.

I felt the need to add my two cents in this....this has been happening to me for the longest with the flex reaper rom ONLY. I've used stock and ZN's rom and those did not lag after unlock...only flex reaper. I'm currently using flex reaper and still experience it from time to time but doesn't destroy my day at all...
Give the CM9 nightly ROM's a go. No Bluetooth n no HDMI audio, but everything else is fine n damn smooth. Those issues will be fixed though

Can anyone direct me to where can I adjust the governor/max/min CPU settings?

franco kernel sluggish or phone damaged?

Hi all,
Today I installed CWM and flashed franco's kernel for JB (the newest one). At first it seemed pretty fast so I was happy. I decided to install setcpu and set it to max 1,8 ghz with set on boot enabled (I know it was stupid, but I did not realize it at the time). After rebooting the phone froze and a purple layer appeared on top of my screen. Seconds later my phone rebooted. I set setcpu on 1,2 ghz max and let it stresstest for a couple of minutes. No errors were found. But now my phone lags sometimes, like if project butter just had disappeared and the normal android sluggishness has reappeared. Is this a kernelissue or did I damage my cpu with this stupid overclock? Btw, apart from the sluggishness in the animations I can run everything just fine.
I'm on Franco and have no problems. Why don't you try another kernel and let us know how it goes?

You need to learn about what you're doing before you do it!
I flashed the trinity 1420-537 JB stable kernel, and everything works as smooth as it has to be. The strange thing is that it was a bit sluggish until I changed my wallpaper from a live to a normal one. Now I switched back and everything is still smooth :? . Anyway, does this kernel overclock the cpu itself or are the speeds in the name just the available range?

if I have such issues I will never flash an oc kernel to look if everthing is working. Install stock rom kernel back and try. If everything is fine......you can try an oc one.
On Trinity; first number is MAX CPU clock range you can chose and second number is fix GPU clock.....or just reading FAQ, Changelog etc. will answer your questions really quick

from what I've heard, some gnexs are really picky with roms and kernels. I guess your phone is one of them. I personally had problems with Trinity Kernel, since when I reboot, it sometimes bootloops for 5minutes and such. I personally had no problems with Franco though. In fact, I use Franco as my daily driver
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T using xda app-developers app
Franco's app let's you easily tweak the settings (overclock, change governors, etc.) which may help the sluggishness. I almost exclusively run Franco and his M5 is amazing!

A reflash might be the best option ... either the ROM or Kernel or Both lol thats my inner crack flasher talkin'
Never had problems with franco. It's trinity's kernel that made problems for me.
I run Franco's kernel myself. Just have to be careful with flashing the nightlies, it can be hit or miss. They are experimental.

Galaxy running hot...

I'm kinda new to the S3 and have mainly stuck with TWIZ roms, I've tried a couple AOSP roms but found that the battery gets hot as hell quickly either while charging or using and the data connectivity is spotty at best on AOSP, I have LTE where I live but rarely see it on AOSP. I've updated PRL and profile and radios...but no luck...can anybody help or point me in the right direction? Thank...

well generally twiz roms are more stable than aosp roms... so id stay in the TWiz sections... but thats all i can say
AOSP ROMs typically run the CPU harder. While TouchWiz ROMs use more RAM. Thus why AOSP ROMs typically, emphasis on the 'typically', run hotter than TouchWiz ROMs. There are ways around this. For example, messing with CPU governors and settings. I have found ktoonsez has kept my AOSP ROMs fairly cool, relative to the default. Heat also means battery drain. So you will find here that TouchWiz ROMs normally have better battery life. I highly recommend CleanBean 4.1. Very nice ROM. Complete, stable, very quick and snappy. While no sacrificing battery life, as I was able to squeeze out about 14-15 hours. Good luck

While I agree that AOSP ROMs use more CPU and TW use more RAM, for me AOSP had the best battery life. Espicially when I'm running ktoonsez kernel I get a good 3+ hours screen time and a total of 20 hours easily. While on a TW ROM running ktoonsez I get maybe 2 and a half hour screen time with a total of maybe 12-15 hours of total battery time. Also for me the only time my phone gets hot is when my phone is charging and I am using it constantly or I'm playing graphic driven games.

Must have missed that . At this point I would try a different Kernel. I suggest Ktoonsez Kernel.
If anyone is still having issues here.
Apps repeatedly doing wakelocks, Phone becoming hot while on standby or on charging indicates that theres a ton of background processes going while its charging.
And that includes weather updating, widgets with high refresh rate, auto-sync enabled automatically to turn on or off via file tweaks or utility applications.
I've been using CarbonRom and the only time it gets hot is when the phones at it's peak playing graphical games.
Mines is stock kernel but I have tweaked scripts that turn off my CPU's 2nd core while on standby,
and having SetCPU Auto clock the processor to be at its 2nd lowest to very lowest while screen off, and have
it clocked midranged 702-801 while screen on without doing any UV or OV.
I would also have force GPU Rendering checked and disable hardware overlays when im not using anything on the phone.
My battery life is 6-10 hours screen on web browsing, reading articles, watching movies / videos on netflix ~ Depends.
If I charged the battery and calibrate it and left it off standby without touching it, it can last around 3-4 day's depending on my
background wakelocks on messaging or any type of SMS or alerts recieved.
Also using Greenify to hibernate Ram hungry apps. and I'd usually freeze certain apps that aren't killable to save battery life.

Rooted
Unlocked Bootloader
ArcKnight Kernel
Arconium ICS 5.0
I tried also overclocking and it didn't help with anything.
So, what else can I do ?
Thanks a lot
Slow and laggy doing what? Games? Or daily use?

Daily use; navigating apps drawer, apps like facebook and twitter
How many memory do u have in use? (Settings>apps>running)
And how many free?

right now it's 256MB used and 85MB free
the free space is lower most of the times though
Mmm, more memory free more fast will be the phone.
Try this, change your launcher for nova or apex (I recommend an old version, which use less memory) then configure the launcher to be fast in options.
Set the frecuency of the clock to max 1306 min 364
Use ondemand if you feel slow, but for daily use I recommend smartassv2.
Change the kernel to Vengance is the fastest that I ve ever try.
In settings > Dev options > disable the animations ( transitions- window)

uhhh, stop there. Not all the time, as long as you have a good governor, I/O and decent CPU frequencies, phone shall be fast independently from the used/free RAM, an example is my phone with even 50 of free ram and blazing fast, Android has an awesome memory management, I'd advice not to take this too literally. Free RAM is good, but most of the times it's being used on the stuff you see at your screen, which lowers the redraw speed, and hence, the lag and slowiness.
SD card influence a lot ...i think
i format my brick SD card and my phone run like a charm-.-

How can you tell that an SD Card is being/going slow?

So, what do you recommend to enhance the performance?!
And another question, does the internal memory matter?!

For lags? Don't overclock, my phone runs smooth even on 576MHz, so as I can see you're on ICS, have you tried GB or JB? idk how many people do report lags on ICS, we already know it's the most laggy OS unfortunately.. which governors are you using, have you uninstalled useless system apps? do you use task killers/cache cleaners?

Stock GB was really slow and I've never tried a custom ROM of GB. But could JB work on Arc S ?!
I'm using smartass2 and yes i've uninstalled some of useless system apps

stock things will be slow as always, that's nothing weird.

I have a friend who uses a Xperia S on stock JB. He claims that there is not much difference in the performance from ICS except for some minor changes in the looks. I have yet to test out the stock JB myself so I don't have much say about stock JB performance.
And the official statement released from Sony was that JB would not run optimally on 2011 Xperia phones, that's why there's no JB update for our phones.
