SD CARD - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So like everyone else, im experiencing the same problem! I keep receiving messages like "preparing sd card" everytime I wake up my phone! This can't be due to the problem to sd card because I don't receive any message when my phones is awake.
Even I can listen to music for hours without sd card error.
However when I don't play any music or no processes is running that needs the sd card the error keeps appearing!
How do i resolve this! I think it's a software issue! Maybe because the quad core gorse to sleep which causes this problem? I don't know!
What are your views? What you think solves the problem?
Thanks

Would I be correct in guessing that you have a Sandisk SD card!
If so, that may very well be the problem.

This is the only card I've successfully used for any length of time without that error, and I've tried 3 previous ones from other manufacturers

hi,
i think it could be most likely software,
as i have stock 4.1.1,no root and took an old 8 gig sd ( think it is a sandisk ,not sure )
from one of my old htc phones ,working perfect. .
i have no problem such as you described " "preparing sd card"
it works 100% no errors nothing.
( and i forget sometimes i have ext. sd card in phone ! )

@imrhay
Try this.
Backup all your data on your SD Card
Reformat Your SD Card using your phone.
Then restart your phone.

SD Card Unexpectedly Removed

Hi guys,
I've seen this issue addressed on forums for other devices but didn't see a thread for it here.
Anyone else experienced this before? Constalty getting an error message for "SD Card Unexpectedly Removed". It's a class 4 32GB SD Card, it's installed securely in my GS3 in an Otterbox case, running on my rooted stock JB device.
I can usually access the SD card data after a few minutes but then often when I wake my device still get the same message.
Do I need to format the card??
I had an S3 that initially reported this error. It eventually started ruining sdcards.
AT&T eventually ended up giving me a new one.

Anyone have any further input on this? Earlier tonight, mine gave me the same warning. (Also installed securely inside an Otterbox case, running stock/ non rooted). I just popped the card into my laptop and my computer doesn't see it. It really looks like the card's ruined and everything on it is gone. To say that's not cool is an understatement...
Mine started saying it's ejected last night, also in a case, randomly saying it's back. Still works fine in a pc. Assuming it's the slot and not the rom...poop. guess I need to Odin back to stock and try to get a replacement.

Had the same issue with my S3.
Turned out that the SD card was dying, this caused it to be unmounted by itself and then mounted again (sometimes showing notification “sd card removed unexpectedly”), hence triggering the media scanning process.
I created an application to monitor how many times the SD card was removed, and turned out to be unmounted every ~3 mins!!!
I then bought a new Transcend 32GB Class 10 card, and until now, this never happens, no reports from the application whatsoever, and no media process eating my battery.
I just published this app in the play store now, this is the link:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sdcardmonitor
It might be a bad sd card, i used to get that error on another phone when using a certain sd card but when i tried another one it worked fine. Maybe try another card see if you get the error.
Apparently sgs3 have problems with SD cards anyway

I had this happen to my friends phone the other day. Best thing to do if you can't access the information may be to run chkdsk /r which will check for bad sectors and recover any readable information. Move tour info off the card and try to reformat to fat32

Problem with SD card

Hi I had this phone for while and bought the sandisk Ultra 32GB class 10 sd card when I got this awesome phone. However lately my phone was acting strange. For past 4 days my phone will randomly unmount SD card and notify me that it got disconnected. When I turn on the screen then it will shortly mount the SD card and does not show these problem. Not only that these is happening consistently and keeping my phone awake and draining my battery as well. I don't have picture with me since I format my whole phone and SD card but this will happen at least 20 to 30 times in a hour.
I used to use Saurom Project Hybird 1.3.2 before and I format everything, from TWRP, and installed CleanRom ACE 4.5 but it is still happening with same problem.
Is there any way to fix these problem?

I have the same problem with a 32gb San disk, after searching all day the only conclusion I came up with is that sd card is going bad and needs to be replaced preferably for one that is not a SanDisk. I guess they are not compatible
Thanks. I was hoping that I didn't had to do that. Anyway do you have any other brand that is good?
I guess your best bet would be going with a Samsung sd card just to avoid having problems in the future.
I'm having the same problem it is not your SD card or at least I don't think so I read a different XD a thread for hey note 2 on a different carrier it was over 17 pages long of people having the exact same issue some say that the SanDisk 32 they are so then and that put in a piece of paper behind them will solve the problem but I'm not finding that word besides I find it funny it only does this when my phone is in sleep or when I'm in a phone call it is very annoying I currently am being told I have a blank SD card and sometimes later it may just work for no reason

If you're getting heavy Media Server battery usage with the unmounts, it's could be a bad media file on your SD card crashing the Media Server and causing the unmounts.
I deleted podcasts, videos, and mp3s off of my SD card and the error went away. A clean format of the card should also work.
I dont think that was my case. I format the sd card and keep it empty and mount the sd card and it was still having the problem. However when I change my sd card to my old one the error when away. I guess I got bad sd card.

[Q] Phone freezes when trying to access photos on ext. SD Card

I have 812 pictures in my Camera album on my external Toshiba 32GB Class 10 SD card. When I first got the phone in December, everything worked great, even after transferring from my EVO 3D. Now, whenever I try to access my stuff on my SD card through the Gallery app, it just freezes. I can hit home and exit the app, but back doesn't work and I cannot scroll anywhere. I can still access pictures via ASTRO and save stuff on to it..I just don't anymore, in case it goes corrupt. Any solutions? I tried searching, but no one seems to have the same problem as me..
Lol. Sounds like a simple cache issue with the gallery. Go to settings, application manager, all apps, find gallery, try clearing cache, and if that doesn't solve the problem, delete data. This will not delete your images. I think it may or may not delete your thumbnails. Just scroll over the images again and a thumbnail is remade. Nothing will harm your photos.

hmmm... I would normally say that the 800+ images in one gallery might be the cause of the problem. But you say that it was working fine previously. Even then, I'd recommend to split the images into different folders (maybe based on month they were taken) to minimize the amount of thumbnails that gallery has to process and look through.
I'm assuming you've done the MA6 and MB1 updates. Perhaps upgrading the phone to 4.1.2 caused this? I haven't heard of anything similar on XDA, but I'd stick with kkarson's approach and clear cache from the gallery app. Hope that works for ya!
Already tried clearing the cache and data from the Application Manager, but still the same results. I have a folder of old camera photos from my EVO 3D with 1780 photos in it, and it opens and I can view the photos perfectly fine, with no lag or freezing. But when I open the "Camera" folder on the ext. SD card, it just freezes and I have to go back to the home screen. I just upgraded to MB1 today and still the same results..

Maybe there's corrupted files on the SD card causing the phone to choke when it tries to read them. If you have windows 7 or XP you can put the card in your pc, (with a card reader or usb card reader), then right click on the card and choose properties. Select the tools tab in the properties box. The first option is error checking which will scan the disk and fix errors (if fix errors is checked). However, if there are corrupted files on the SD card it might be going bad and should be reformatted.
I have the same issue. I havent found a fix. I even formatted my external SD card.. didnt help.

No fix. Your Sd card is done. The fix is get a new one.
Also the op likely has Sd card problems and not a phone problem.

The card isnt that old and isnt giving any read/write errors.
I guess that could be the case.. its a class 10 Sandisk card.. I would think it would last more than a couple of months.

I'm looking at a Sandisk 32GB class 10 ultra card that I got right after xmas so it's only 3 mopnths old. It started spitting out corrupt files after only 1 month. Eventually I'll get another card. But if my phone ever random restarts, or suddenly locks up, or I notice media is using a lot of battery, I know if I run scan disk on the card it will show errors. It lasts for a few weeks between formats.
There are also tons of posts from people that have had sd card failures on this phone (also with new cards).
Scan of my card after phone acted up.

Dont worry you're not alone, theres a thread in general that had a ton of posts and the thread title was "If your sdcard failed on you, what recovery were you on?"
Many have had to purchase 2 or 3 cards until they got one that didnt go bad or corrupted. If you got the sdcard (the one that failed) very recently, you could call the manufacturer and tell them it failed on you, I'm sure they would send a replacement because I've seen others do it and they got their replacements in a timely manner

[Q] Damaged SD Card

I apologize if this thread is made too often. I've been searching around for a fix, however I can't seem to find anything.
I'm running Cyanogenmod on my GS3. I've had an 8GB SD card that I pulled over from my old Evo 4G that has served me well for years, however I figured it is about time I moved on after spending the last few months deleting apps and videos to make space for more. I purchased a Sandisk 64 GB SDXC card and am attempting to use it with my phone, however I get the dreaded "Damaged SD Card - Try reformatting" error.
Of note, the 8 GB SD card still works perfectly fine, so I don't believe it is a problem with the SD card slot or anything. In fact, this is the first time I've touched the slot since purchasing the phone a year or two ago.
I've tried many things that people have recommended to others from searching around, however nothing seems to have worked.
I've tried reformatting it with three different programs as well as running chkdsk on cmd.
I've tried letting the reformatting process on the phone, which is prompted to me when pressing the notification for the Damaged SD Card", run for 15 minutes and it continues to run with the message "Unmounting SD Card" (which is odd since the card isn't mounted in the first place).
I can read the card perfectly fine on my laptop through the card reader, however it does prompt me to format the card every time I switch it over from the phone to the laptop, saying something along the lines of it not being in a language the laptop can read. After formatting, I can view the card as a drive.
Does anyone happen to have a fix for this? I would really like to start using my new card.
From a quick Google search on your problem it seams that SanDisk and Samsung galaxy's don't play nice with each other due to a flaw in SanDisk cards you may want to contact SanDisk about the issue.

Did you format the SD Card to FAT32 before using it ?

The only options I'm given to format it is exFAT and NTFS. I have only tried exFAT.
EDIT: I searched around and found that Windows only allows you to format to FAT32 with 32 GB or less. I downloaded a Fat32Formatter program that let me bypass that, formatted the card, and it works perfectly now! Thank you so much!
Your welcome . Glad you got it sorted out.

Micro SD card stop working after not using the phone for hours

Hello guys,
I just got my Moto G5 (3GB Version from Amazon) a few weeks ago and I am using an Micro SD-Card (SanDisk Ultra Android microSDXC 32GB) as internal storage.
My problem is: Over night the phone seems to "forget" about the sd-card and apps stop working. F.e.:
- Instagram (on the sd card) couldn't refresh the feed
- Whatsapp couldn't save pictures (on my sd card) anympre
- Twitter stopped working at all and just crashed
etc.
After reformatting the SD-card it worked for 2-3 weeks now, but now it is happening again.
Anyone has an idea what is the issue or experienced similiar issues? Maybe should I return the phone to get a new one?
Thanks!
SOLUTION IS IN POST 8 / POST 6
Take the sd card out then reinsert it
Then run this app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.house.noranuko.mediarescanner
It will cause a few force closes when it's scanning - Just keep clicking on reopen app
I don't know if it will work as Iv never used sd card as internal storage - Most likely it's the sd card or the problem will be the firmware on the phone - The phone itself will be perfectly fine
That's why when I buy a phone it's always best to buy an 8gb minium ideally 16gb

I normally restart the phone and afterwards it works, but I need to put all my sd card apps on my home screen again, cause they are gone. I also turned of the phone and took the sd card out and put it in again. Has the same effect.

Rescans all folders & files on sd card
I find that if I restore backups change roms etc 3rd party apps can't read sd card contents of what was on the card although it can read and access anything that was put on there after the restore.
Same was true if connecting phone to laptop via USB - previous files/folders were not accessible
After scanning with the app everything was accessible again
still not working
Sadly the "SD-Card Scanning"-App didn't work out for me.
I found out, that the microSD-Card stops working after charging the phone for a longer period of time.
Therefore my question: Anyone else experience this problem with his MotoG5 ? Which Micro-SD-Cards are you using?
Thanks!

Hello!
I'm using my new SanDisk Ultra Plus 32GB MicroSD now since two days as an internal storage and my phone seems to work fine now.
There is no disconnection of the MicroSD during long charging and all my apps/data on the SD-card works fine. :good:

Small update for people, who will read this thread:
- My Samsung Micro-SD card broke (not formattable or readable anymore)
- Other Micro-SD cards have the same problem decribed in this thread
- I finally send in my Moto G5 for repairment
- Currently waiting for it to come back
I guess there is something wrong with the hardware or firmware. Let's hope it will finally work flawlessly.
Wait, 3Go of memory? Wtf is that?
