[Q] Question about Powered USB Hub - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I think I should be posting this in the accessories thread, but this is actually a question. So I hope the moderator moves it to the right thread if I made a mistake.
If anyone is using a powered USB hub to connect multiple devices to your Note 2, say an External HD, a wireless dongle for mouse and keyboard, or any other accessories through the OTG cable, does it charge the phone? I'm planning on buying a powered USB hub so that I can use my 1 TB External HD. But as we all know that it's going to cause a major drain on the battery, it'll be really helpful if connecting the OTG cable through a powered USB hub actually charges the phone too.
Waiting for replies from members of xda.

Anyone?...

Just got my otg cables delivered yesterday. I already hooked up a usb keyboardb with no problems. I have a powered 4 port hub that I plan on hooking up today. Just have to un bury it from my basement. Plan on using keyboard, mouse and an external drive . I didn't even think about whether it would charge the phone or not. If I had to guess I would say no but I'll get back in a few hours and let you know what happens. Do you have any idea if we can use wireless usb input devices that use dangles?
Sent from my SGH-I317 using Tapatalk 2

Well for one thing I am using a logitech wireless keyboard and a mouse, not bluetooth, with otg cable and it works. So I think it'd work with a hub too.
Should be getting my powered hub by Monday. I hope it can charge the device... Fingers crossed.
If u r thinking about a gsm data dongle, I doubt it'd work. Some if the Chinese and Indian android device do have support for usb data dongle. I wish samsung had implemented in our device.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using Tapatalk 2

Nope you answered my question. Was gonna buy one of those logitech keyboard\trackpad combo from Walmart for like 35 bucks which now I will although a gsm dongle sounds interesting. Unfortunately to answer your question, I hooked up my powered hub ten minutes ago and it did not charge my GN2 as I suspected. I'm using an old Dlink dsb-h4 which is many years old and I think it's even usb 1 (god I need to upgrade) maybe your new one will yield you better results. I'm just thinking that the hubs send power to the ports and not backwards to the host device. Let me know if yours works and I'll go ahead and purchase the same one.
Sent from my SGH-I317 using Tapatalk 2

Will definitely give u a feedback as soon as I get mine. Dang... I was hoping it'd work... I hope it does with the new one. I ordered an amkette 7 port powered usb hub.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using Tapatalk 2

Yeah would have been nice. Luckily I have four batteries and am also usually within arms reach of an outlet. At least using a powered hub, my inputs won't cause additional drain on my device. Looking forward to hearing about your experience.
Sent from my SGH-I317 using Tapatalk 2

Got my Amkette 7 port USB hub. Got it connected. Inserted my 1 TB HD, a wireless dongle for keyboard and mouse, a 500 gb HD. And all is well with the world. It however doesn't charge my device as suspected. Oh well...You can't win 'em all. Atleast battery drain won't be much as i8t is a powered hub.
Currently typing using a Logitech K260 wireless keyboard with external keyboard helper pro so that the stock keyboard doesn't pop out and take up screen real estate. Prrettty happy with the outcome I guess.

Sweet! Yea I thought that was going to happen. Yep our batteries are large enough we don't have to constantly worry about charging. Having a keyboard is awesome isn't it? Just got done typing a craigslist ad for a 360 and 60 games on my keyboard. It was great. You can get so much more done! The only gripe I have is that the wired devices we use, create a mess of wires but oh well its more than worth it!

If you're just taking the USB cable that came with the tablet, changing it's gender and plugging something into the end, it won't work. The tablet would need to have USB Host support which this tablet does not. I believe that the Samsung USB Adapter that converts directly from the Samsung Connector to USB Female will add USB Host support (USB OTG).
Here is the USB Adapter. http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/galaxy-tab-accessories/EPL-1PL0BEGSTA

I'm sorry, but you're wrong. Honeycomb 3.1 adds SOFTWARE support for USB Host funtionality. The device has to have HARDWARE support as well. This tablet does not. That is the reason that you need a special adapter that provides USB Host HARDWARE funtionality, such as the one I listed above.

I've got my fingers crossed Samsung hasn't dicked up the Bluetooth stack on the Galaxy Tab 10.1/8.9:

Yes. There's a lot of misinformation in this thread. The tablet DOES have USB Host capability, but it will only enable it when it sees a specific resistor on a particular pin in the dock connector.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1155065 for more details.
To get USB Host, there are two approaches:
1) Make your own cable with the correct resistors
2) Purchase the Samsung USB Host adapter which is now available for around $20.
Note that there are some limitations:
1) Xbox360 controllers and PS3 controllers are not standard HID devices and require kernel support not present in stock kernels. Pershoot's kernel has the necessary modules.
2) PS3 controllers must be fully charged before trying to use them. If not they will try to charge their battery from the tab and cause an overcurrent trip, disabling the port until the USB dongle is disconnected.
Also, Samsung didn't mangle the Bluetooth stack like they do with their phones, so wiimotes work.
Not working for me
Not sure if there's a specific USB setting, but I bought the adapted and it works with Chainfire's DSLR Controller no problem. I plugged in the playstation 3 remote and had no luck, nor any detection of the device. Tried running an n64 emulator to try to map the keys, no luck there either.
All of the guides seem to be using a Xoom, I'm on the brand new OTA on the GT10.1
Anyone else?

Which kernel are you running? Did you read my notes in the post prior to yours at all?
So, if i get the official USB adapter my regular wireless keyboard (Logitech Wave) should work seamlessly. Right?
I've just been using the "SixAxis Controller" app from Dancing Pixel (you can find it on the Android Market) to connect my PS3 controller to my tablet over Bluetooth. It's worked great for me (note: I use yongzh's emulators)
Hope that helps with the PS3 issues...I don't really know much about the USB adapter as I don't use it.

Most likely not. I have personally tested all combinations of MHL adapter, OTG cable, USB hubs (powered and non), splitters and adapters.
As of right now all signs point to the Micro USB port being a one job at a time thing.
I would love to be suprised, but I'm not buying this to test it. -Sorry

Awesome! Please let us know if usb host and mhl be used simultaneously. a video review would be great!
I bought one. I ended up with a defective unit (detailed below), but the defect only seems to be mechanical with the button and not with the electronics. The seller is sending me another so I will let you know how that goes.
Anyway, my initial impression is "meh". Here is the "executive summary":
1. USB host cannot be used at the same time as MHL.
2. In fact, USB host cannot be used at all when the power is plugged in.
My experience with the unit:
1. There is a button on the front that lights up based on what "mode" the unit is in. Blue for USB host and green for MHL. There is a red mode, too, but I only saw it once and haven't been able to get back to it yet.
2. Like I said, the plastic part of the button broke the first time I pushed it. Since the seller said he would send me another, I tore the unit apart and discovered that there wasn't enough glue keeping the button in place.
3. I can't really tell exactly what the button is supposed to do. When I first plug it in to my phone without the power plugged in, I have to press the button to get my phone to recognize it. Once the unit is recognized then it goes into USB host mode and the button starts glowing blue. Nothing seems to happen if I press the button again.
4. As soon as I plug in the power (or I plugged in the unit with the power already plugged in) then the unit automatically goes to MHL mode and the button glows green. If I had an sd card plugged in and mounted when I plugged in the power, then the card is forcibly unmounted when the unit goes into MHL mode.
5. I assume #4 goes for any other USB-connected peripherials as I didn't try a micro sd or a memory stick.
I will be posting this to Amazon once I get time....

yes there is
this is the micro usb port
this micro usb port is for bringing power to the guest devices
I have a similar one without MHL and this is what it does
one regret on the one I have is that it doesn't act has a HUB, so you can't plug a sd and a micro sd at the same time and transfer data between them
is it the same with this device ?
I was thinking buying this unit. (Right now it's 37 USD)
But, does this product works with other phones? Like Nexus 4, Galaxy SII and SIII or Galaxy Note I or II?
I want to keep it when I sell my Galaxy Nexus...!
Or is it better to buy two cables, one MHL and other USB OTG? (Both will make around 16 USD)

(Q) Is There Such A Cable?

basically what I want is a OTG cable that splits off to a regular mini USB as well.
what I'm trying to do is be able to plug my phone into the charger and be able to plug In a ps3 controller into the note 2 as well.
I know I can do this wirelessly because I already do this. But what if I'm gonna charge my ps3 controller and my note 2 at the same time?
the only way I see you can do this is taking USB OTG cable and then connect that to a USB Male to male. Take the one male and connect that to usb to adapter that splits into 2 males. One of those males will go into the charger and the other will connect to a USB mini adapter and connect ps3 controller to the mini adapter.
Sounds very confusing but sure if it work between all that.
What would be easier if they had a micro USB splitter that splits into a USB adapter and a mini USB.

I don't think it will work, the dock achieves this, probably by informing the phone that it's a dock, but the adapters rely on shorting the ground wire to tell the phone it needs to become an usb host. I don't have empirical data but my electronics training tells me the power supply (charger) wouldn't love a short on it's grounding and wouldn't charge the phone...also when going into usb otg mode the phone supplies power, so the charger would see this as a short or an over current situation and not charge.

because both mouse and keyboard would be using through Bluetooth adapter. i already use the mouse and it works through the regular Samsung otg cable.
Can that just work off from the Note 2's Power Supply?
it can only power 1 device, and barely. it outputs around 300mA which is enough for a usb stick, a mouse, a keyboard, or a controller, but not for external hard drives nor other phones your usb hub would have to be powered our else you may suffer reliability and connection problems with your keyboard mouse and controller. basically if you pressed a button on all three the phone would lose them all momentarily

1 thing is that it's 100 dollars. second thing is basically I can't put in horizontal mode if I want to use a keyboard and mouse and browse the Internet I don't want to browse it straight up and down. not to mention if I want to play games as well if I'm using ps3 controller to charge it at the same time I can't do that. who wants to play games tilting their head to watch because of the fact that the phone is mounted vertically instead of horizontally.
I mean I don't understand why it so hard to find a micro USB to a dual USB adapters I mean that shouldn't be that hard to make haha. with that I can use a keyboard and mouse using Unifying receiver. and then the other USB adapter can go straight to the ps3 controller.
So it would be called micro usb male to dual usb female

here's what I don't understand if I take that USB hub connect it to the adapter that I have, and have the USB Bluetooth and keyboard bluetooth in there at the same time, I shouldn't have issues because if im browsing the internet I'm not going to be typing keys on the keyboard and moving the mouse at the same time. so in theory I can move the mouse around Lets say go to the address bar stop using the mouse and go to the keyboard and start typing on the keyboard. so basically I will only be using 1 port at a time. instead of moving the mouse and typing keys at the same time I won't be doing something like that just be ridiculous haha.
so can I use that Belkin USB 4 port and just basically use the two USB Bluetooth hooked up to it. so the port will be connected to the OTG cable. if this makes sense I'll connect the OTG cable to the hub and the 2 Bluetooth to the hub
because if I honestly wanted if I wanted to play video games like grand theft auto I can use the keyboard to type cheats and stuff. use the keyboard through the OTG cable. and connect my ps3 controller wirelessly.

wowowow, no, keyboard, mice and ps3 will only be afected if they are wiered or rf. bluetooth devices wont interfere with each other, you can have a ton of devices on bluetooth and not even need the usb otg... you dont need a buetooth adapter for this, phone, it comes with bluetooth, so any bluetooth item should work with the phone while it's charging without needing the usb otg cable at all. ps3 controllers are bluetooth by default. you dont need to plug them to the phone.

[Q] What Portable HDD works with your Note II?

Hey Guys,
Ive been meaning to purchase a portable HDD for my Note II ever since i got myself a USB OTG cable. Ive tried working my Imation Apollo 2.5" to my phone but with no luck, its been formatted to FAT32 and its only 120GB with a single partition, the LED lights up and i can hear a spinning sound but its short and runs in loops. Not sure what that means but ive tried hooking up a USB thumb drive and the wireless mouse and they both worked so the issue cant be from the OTG connector and it also works on the PC.
Anyways, im planning on heading out to the IT store in a few days to get my hands on a 500GB portable HDD. I would love to hear from you guys what brands/model/capacity works on your Note 2 so I dont end up with the wrong choice. Any input on this is most welcome.

Doesn't the hdd need power supplied to it?
Note 2 cannot output electricity through thr micro usb port

Not really. There are a lot of people who have manage to work portable hard drives on their note 2 provided its formatted to Fat32 even upto 1TB or more... But not sure why it's not working with mine.

Also not sure but I think I read somewhere before that there's an app to increase power output for rooted device. Would appreciate it if someone can confirm.

I've got the same problem with my 300GB portable HDD and I don't have a powered USB hub.
Has anyone got a non-powered drive to work with their phone?

I'm curious about this too.
The note 2's power should not be enough for a hd, people that get it worked may be using hd with ac power.

Take a look at this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9MSX10RZRE : The note 2 is literally a BEAST! lol
and i've been using a western digital 500gb portable HDD with mine. takes a while for it to index everything, but thats only because my hdd's nearly full.
so are these new 500gb and 1tb devices usable with the note 2?? do you need a usb splitter as these hdds have two usb connecters??

i an guessing that it is the normal WD 3.0 passport or something... a model which requires the least power should be the best i suppose

Yes but to be honest I rather be 100percent sure before getting one since I'm only getting it for the Note2, I've got plenty of hard drives that don't work. With this device..Although I was wondering what if I just get a portable casing that supports USB 3.0 and fit in my old hard drive in it. Will that do.?

i guess the only way to be sure is to test it before buying... maybe someone you know has one...
It seems portable HDD with USB 3.0 capability seems to work with us otg on the note 2 since it uses less power, as I tried one from a friend today. It was a 1TB western digital USB3.0. Also I think by default Sammy rom doesn't support NTFS file system so I had to download a 3rd party app called Paragon NTFS to mount the hard drive with NTFS file system. It worked perfectly.

that is actually really good news... just i need to confirm one more thing though... they say that using an hdd with the otg a lot will damage the phone due to the over drain of voltage etc.... i don't know if that is true...
Hey guys, does a usb 3.0 hdd work with otg? I have a seagate 500gb and its not working ...

USB otg bluetooth dongle?

If I get a usb Y cable or a powered usb hub, would a bluetooth dongle work? I think i can score a free ipad case with a bluetooth keyboard so i have to see how i can plop the little kindle in, but it would be nice to bring my kindle with me to school to type up research or whatever i need. I know there are threads about it but those date back in 2012 around may or so, so things could have changed
Yes. I was successfully able to get some flash drives to work, you just have to get chainfire's USB otg apps. I would imagine Bluetooth dongles would work as well

Alright thanks! Ill try it out and buy a Bluetooth dongle. I do have a wireless keyboard but it would be weird to lug around a full sized keyboard for a little tab
