I have a srint samsung galaxy s3 16 gb phone however storage shows the internal memory to only be about 12 gb- why ?
Built in apps and such
Because the 16gb is shared between the system and other partitions as well as the data/storage partitions. Do you wonder why your 250gb hdd in your pc only shows 225gb after you install the os?
I like to break stuff!
There's also the partition table and the fact that the number of bits and bytes gets rounded by the manufacturer. You don't even need to install an OS to see that. Just buy a new hard drive. My 1TB hard drive had about 950GB of usable space out of the box with no OS, but I didn't get gypped 50GB of space. That's just how computer storage works.

We know the flash chip is 32gb, but in my storage settings I only see 26gb for userspace + 2gb for apps. Where's the other 4gb? I'm assuming a factory reset partition? And could the device be repartitioned to open more of this up?
correct me if i'm mistaken but as far as i know the 4gb is used by android it self. there for it's likely you can't see that little space.
Yep the OS is installed on part of the 4Gb you cant use.

Hi
I am so curious about my phone ROM size. I'm not sure if I was cheated. My phone specs say that Internal Memory(ROM) is 4G but when I check it with Antutu, it show only 222MB. Was I cheated? Please check the link and attachment for screenshot.
http://www.handsetdetection.com/properties/vendormodel/Singtech/SGT-X40
Are you asking about your phones ROM, RAM or internal storage? The only number give in the Specifications is 4GB of internal memory... which means internal storage for apps and such.

It should be 4GB but Antutu show only 222MB. That's why I'm curious. Did you check attachment for my screenshot?
No the attachment was unable to open for me... But to answer your question I have seen some factory installed ROM's as large as 6gb so im not suprised that most of your space has already been taken. Just add an Micro SD card. Another way to check is to hook it up to your PC and see how much space windows says it should have. You can also find the largest files and see if its bloatware or something else.

OK, I attached JPG. Why 4GB turn to 222MB? It is not even close.
First of all you are not in the right forum, this is the i747(m) forum. Secondly the information you are looking at is the physical memory (RAM), and the size of the rom that is installed (ROM, go figure). This simply means that the partition size to install an OS on your device is 222 MB large, which is stored on the internal storage (sdcard). The specs for the device list 4GB total internal storage, after subtracting system reserved space (ROM, Recovery, Bootloader, etc.) you are probably left with a little over 3 GB of actual accessible storage space. The screen shot you have provided does not include the internal storage capacity.

That Internal Storage is ROM, isn't it? Why did you say it doesn't include Internal Storage Capacity? I attached another half of Device Information. Please check.

No, as i stated in the instance of this screen shot the ROM label is signifying the size of the partition you have available to install an OS, i say it doesn't include internal storage because it doesn't mention internage storage (or sdcard) anywhere in the pictures. I have never used Antutu so i downloaded to see what it looked like on mine and it is much more detailed. I attached a screenshot, and i also attached a screenshot of the storage menu from the settings menu, which is all you need to look at to find out how much internal storage you have. As you can see my device has 1700 MB of RAM (physical memory) and although their label of 'memory' under storage is incorrect and misleading you can see it matches exactly and is in fact the internal storage size...the information you are seeking. You can see the same information on internal storage with the built in storage menu. You will also notice that i only have a useable 12GB, when my phone actually has 16GB internally....this is because of system reserved space. Im not really sure how much more specific i can get about the difference between RAM, ROM, and storage....i hope this helps.
On a commentary note, seriously dude if your device only had 222 MB of internal storage after the intial install size of your ROM you are left with 46 MB, you would be hardly able to install a couple apps and cache a few websites before you phone decided life isn't worth it and jumped out the window.

Do you think Android 2.3 OS take more than 3GB? It could be enough for OS for PC. I'm not sure if you say ROM and Internal Storage is different?

That is precisely what i said, in great detail.
I don't get it well. If they are different, why both of them are not mentioned together in specs list. Basically, If Internal is mentioned, no ROM is mentioned. Look at this link for example. Spec show only ROM, no Internal Storage.

Their specification is labeled wrong. Like i said several posts ago, go into the settings menu on your phone, then storage. This will tell you how much internal storage you have available and a chart of what is using it.

One reason I'm trying to figure out if manufacturer sold me what I've been told. The second reason, I want to buy a new phone which is not popular brand like Samsung. If I can't figure out what is the real Internal Storage, I might end up buying a phone with very small internal storage which I won't be able to install many apps. I mean 4GB is really enough for me if it is really 4GB, not 222MB or less.
I have a weird issue with the phone. When I am connected to my PC by wither USB cable or wifi I am seeing 1gb less space than there actually is on the internal memory. For example, when I look at the storage on my phone I have 4gb free, but when I see it on my PC it says 2.99GB. When the free space is less than 1gb on the phone, windows says there is no space at all and I cannot copy anything to the phone. I can copy stuff to the external card and then copy it over to the internal storage with a file explorer but it's a bit of a pain. Any idea what is going on?
This appears to be 1024MB of reserved space set aside for MTP mode on the internal storage. From the Android source:
Number of megabytes of space to leave unallocated by MTP.
MTP will subtract this value from the free space it reports back
to the host via GetStorageInfo, and will not allow new files to
be added via MTP if there is less than this amount left free in the storage.
If MTP has dedicated storage this value should be zero, but if MTP is
sharing storage with the rest of the system, set this to a positive value
to ensure that MTP activity does not result in the storage being
too close to full.

This is why the SD card shows the full available amount instead, it seems.

little different about it is because of different algorithm to read storage. it means some files will be available for an OS.
But more than 1GB is not normal!
try restart phone. mount-unmount sd-card and ...

I also have the same issue with my android.. It's xperia z ultra... Windows shows less internal storage available space, with exactly 1 gb different, just as OP's story... hope someone can clarify this and the MTP thing....
i was looking in web sides is anybody has this problem, i had to, now windows shows 0,5 gb less storage then is in phone under a MM roms
Hi all,
I have a question regarding a phone i own. I flashed cm13 on it and i see it shows only 11.xx GB. Is this normal ? The phone is 16gb
Thanks
I own a 32 gb model and storage wise i think i only have 24 available so much is reserved for system partition plus other partitions efs aboot ect so id about say its normal
I know but on my wifes Galaxy s5 it shows her internal space is 16gb and if i remember correctly my phone showed that as well on the stock lg firmware. See video what i mean. CM13 shows something else (picture first post)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&persist_app=1&v=_VzCganiKo8
Mine does that after a while what I usually to do is if there is nothing you need on internal storage is to boot into twrp wipe internal storage ,making sure you have your rom on ext card (don't want to wipe that do we) then flash my rom.
This leaves me from a clean install with about 8 or 9 gb left to use on internal storage.I think what happens over time is a lot of useless files tend to build up on internal card and this is the reason you don't have much space left and also the operating system takes up quite a bit as well.
just buy a 64gb micro sdcard... or even a 32gb if you don't need much more, they are really cheap.
part of the missing space is the partition information space and the space used by the system/recovery/cache etc. on android 6.0 you can format it as internal.
How can i format that space ? I am running CM13 that uses Android 6.0.1
Here another screenshot from the recovery, why does the recovery not say i have 16GB ???? i don't really understand why it's not listed.
Because it shows available storage not total
Oke thanks for the answer.

I just got my device today and wanted to check the storage of my device in de My Files app.
And saw the amazing 1TB of storage and 99GB of used storage which was strange since I only got the device today and am pretty sure their system ROM doesn't use 80GB of internal storage.
I then download ES Filemanager to see what was using all the storage and then saw that I was in fact only using 13GB of internal storage and that actual total of usable storage only amounts to 937GB.
I don't really mind that it isn't really 1024GB of usable storage. But that they lie to us by showing 99GB of used storage in the My Files app to reach the total of 1TB usable space. That just doesn't sit too well to me.
What do you think about this?
1tb flash storage are not 1024gb but 937gb. i know that because i use byself on my pc nvme drive and i have a samsung 970 evo 1tb mounted that have exactly 937gb. the system of the s10+ use only 5gb and not 13. what you need to know is how linux works. the phone have more as 1 partition . system partition is allmost 6gb, vendor partition other 1.15gb, cache when i saw right on my s10+ 900mb, swap memory 2.5gb etc etc. so when you remove all partition from the 937gb is normal that you have left 901gb. you can buy a 1tb ssd for the pc and you see the same. you haven then 931 or 937gb (differs from brand to brand). in fact the chip have 1tb because it have 1000202039296 byte
^this! Kudos
If you use all 1TB of storage I'll buy you a 256gb SD card to make up for the loss. If you have ever used any phone, computer, or device with any kind of storage you would know this is how storage works.

Not really talking about the partitions tho, I'm wondering towards why they show 99GB in use...
Did anyone read till the end, yes I know 1TB doesn't always equal 1024GB and yes I know partitions do exists and that system most of the time takes around 4GB. And no I honestly don't care about the lost space of not having exactly 1024GB. I was wondering towards why they show 99GB of storage in use while only 13GB really is used
I think that nobody really read the post so to clarify. He isn't complaining about him not getting the full 1TB storage, he is wondering why the software from samsung says it is 99GB used and the software from ES Filemanager says it's 13GB.
It's probably that the software from samsung the flash storage without partitions shows, so it doesn't take in consideration that the flash storage might have multiple partitions. While ES Filemanager shows that you have 13GB used in the partition your files and apps get stored in.
So technically samsung isn't "Lying" to us. They are just showing the intire flash storage.

That's how all storage works. You never have the true amount. There is space reserved for the operating system and apps.

Buy why so much storage
I would assume they have it "hardcoded" to show "Used Space" = ( 1TB - "Available Space") ? Other thing I am not sure but on Linux (pretty sure Android uses ext4) you have by default 5% used for root filesystem so that takes away from your storage. Anyone to correct me maybe ?
