Hello friends,
No, I'm not a newb, just having some problems. I've rooted many an android in the past, but am having trouble with this build 4.2.1 on a Sprint Galaxy Nexus. I'm guessing my problem might just be Windows 8, but I'm hoping I'm wrong, because I have no intention of going back to an older version of Windows, now that I've got this one humming along beautifully.
The problem is that rooting with the Galaxy Nexus Toolkit always fails.
I also tried the Nexus Root Toolkit, same problem.
Here's the question: Has anyone with a Windows 8 machine successfully rooted 4.2.1?
Thanks in advance (and yes, I've done a month's worth of searching)...
Why don't u just use fastboot instead and do it manually

I wish it were that simple. Fastboot doesn't run. I should say, it does something, it opens a cmd window than closes before you can blink.

It is that easy.
You open a command Window and navigate to the folder that contains the fastboot exe

Use ADB. Don't bother with tool kits.
Disable driver signature verification on Windows 8 otherwise you can't install the unsigned drivers that is needed, once you do that wugfresh toolkit will root your gnex in a matter of seconds, I rooted my gnex after 4.2 first came out with my windows 8 pro laptop by doing this with no problem.

Thanks, I've done this. What seems to be happening is I click wugresh's "root" button and it starts doing it's thing, but gets stuck on "Booting TWRP Temporarily."
Maybe I'll try and find the forum he's on...

Simple as pie. What OS? Windows, Linux, Mac? The steps are the same but different tools are used. Anyways start by following this to unlock your boot loader. http://www.android.gs/how-to-unlock-galaxy-nexus-bootloader/
Once unlocked put it back into fastboot mode and do this.
Fastboot flash recovery name-of-recovery.img then it will write the recovery. At this point you can flash a custom ROM and he worryless or flash a Super user binaries and then delete the stockrecovery scripts that run and delete your custom recovery. http://download.chainfire.eu/212/SuperSU/CWM-SuperSU-v0.96.zip here is the superuser binaries if you would like to stay stock rooted.

There's a certain way to install it. But you can just find the fastboot.exe (in my link) and install PDAnet drivers ( google PDAnet) then you'll be good to go. You'll just have to manually boot into the boot loader which is power off and hold the power button and both volume buttons then you'll be in fastboot mode.

YOU DON'T NEED SDK. Just open up the cmd to the directory where you have fastboot.exe, and then boot your phone into bootloader, and then "fastboot oem unlock". Easy, right?
Now flash custom recovery using "fastboot flash recovery NAME.img" (recovery image must be in same directory as fastboot"
Now "fastboot reboot bootloader"
Use your volume rocker to navigate to recovery mode
On your computer "adb push SuperSU.zip /sdcard/" (or super user of you like)
On your phone, install zip from sdcard, flash SuperSU. Reboot
Now you got root

I remember seeing a program that u would install on your PC called like 1 click root and had a very nice GUI with tons of options to simply 1 click root your Nexus. Is this program still out there or what program is the best? I do want Superuser rights as well.
I do not want to flash a new ROM. I like the stock experience. I just need a little more access.
I am having problems with the new jelly bean update and Fox Fi no longer works. I got Easy Tether to work but I want a hot spot that works not USB.
I am hoping I can fix this with rooting or a third party APP.
I really hope I do not have to flash, but if I do have to I will only want to flash another stock ROM but one that is fully unlocked.

That's the proper method. Do not use a toolkit.

Bingo.
Which leaves fastboot as simply the best program to root your Nexus(any Nexus).
Fastboot is really easy, just copy and paste a few commands.
Hell, finding the correct drivers and installing the SDK is harder than fastboot commands.
on top of that, this procedure under windows is way much harder than on linux, imo.

Not just your opinion, that's just a fact lol. You don't have to deal with drivers on Linux or OSX, which makes it 1000x easier.
The drivers are a killer.........
So much that i downloaded the toolkit to install the drivers for my nexus 7 and just dump it aside after that, don't want to deal with drivers anymore..
Now i don't recommend this..

Then you are saying everyone who doesnt want to learn command lines shouldnt have access to rooting and flashing new roms to their phone. Toolkits are easy and fast when you are in trouble and need to get back to stock. There isnt anything wrong with using them just because you dont have to put a command line in.

Anyone coming into the android rooting, flashing roms, ect are kind of ignorant because they dont know everything. If we stay in the days of only using command lines and not coming up with faster ways to help our devices then that is being ignorant. There is just more than one way to do something. Just because someone uses a faster way it doesnt make then lazy but makes them open to new ways of doing things...

Using a toolkit is what is ignorant. With adb it is virtually impossible to "accidentally" do anything. Anybody who believes toolkits to be superior is either an idiot or too lazy to learn adb.
i would say that i have always tried to learn here, thats my goal , i dont know about other people and i dont criticize them , but it really frustrates me if i dont know whats going on when i am doing something. still TOO MUCH to learn:good:
Toolkit is only faster if you don't know how to use adb/ fastboot. Its only faster because you don't know what you're doing it takes me the same amount of time typing commands than using a toolkit basically I'm just waiting for the files to flash and move on to the next step. It isn't like when you're using a toolkit it can magically type and execute all the commands at the same time there is still a process being done.

I have the gnex tool kit, it says waiting for device (option 6), and the most recent drivers are from that toolkit. I tried command pront, Fastboot reboot-bootloader, it says waiting for device. I tried adb flash recovery recovery.img it says waiting for device. I tried 2 different cables and all my usb ports on my computer.
Im at a loss. I can still transfer files from my computer to my device. My computer detects it just none of these commands... god i wish i had an sd card slot... lol
Edit:

Are you confusing adb with fastboot, or was "adb flash recovery recovery.img" a typo? Anyway, forget the toolkit. Get adb/fastboot binaries from the 101 & FAQ, and try:
1) booted into Android: adb devices
This should list your device with a number. If the list is empty, adb cannot interface with your gnex.
2) booted into the bootloader: fastboot devices
This should also list your device with a number. If the list is empty, fastboot cannot interface with your gnex.
Note that the adb and the fastboot interface are different. If you installed drivers and got adb running, this does not automatically make fastboot working. Boot into fastboot, connect and use device manager to scout for unknown devices. Update using naked driver if necessary.

Again, driver issue. 'fastboot devices' should return your devices serial number. that command is the tell-tell sign that communication between fastboot host (PC/Mac) and client (device) see and recognise each other.
And please try to be flawless on the transcription of the exact commands used, to exclude the possibility of typos.
