Hacked hot spot for 4.1.2? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Anyone have a link for a hacked hot spot app/WiFi tether or w/e for android 4.1.2 stock rooted?
Yes I searched earlier but only found 1 or 2. Ones outdated and one only works with super su(the Treve WiFi tether) and I use super user. And when I try searching now, xda tells me it's temporarily unavailable.

Install SuperSU then?

If I recall correctly, when LJ7 was released, they completely borked the wifi tether exploits that people were using. TrevE managed to figure out a way to make it work, but he had used SuperSU. According to your post, it only works with SuperSU (I haven't verified that).
I'm not really familiar with the differences between Super User and SuperSU. As ReapersDeath said (in not so many words), if you value tethering more than you value using Super User, I'd say uninstall Super User and install SuperSU. The basic functionality should be about the same. Otherwise, I don't know of any other mod/hack/app that enables wifi tether on LJ7 or beyond.
Hope this helps!

I've verified it a few times. With super user, it will flood you with access requests until you restart your phone or un install. Even if you have it as auto allow, the message will continue to pop up on your screen while the notification says it's tethering and the apps main screen says it's not and blah. It's a wreck lol

[Q] VZW Nexus and Tethering?

How do you guys suppose they are going to stop it and force you to use their 30$ "service"?
I only ask cause I was experiencing 4g probs on my "rented" RAZR which I have rooted.
I only rooted it so I could use tethering(sql hack) while we were working on my office's network outage.
When I experienced service "cycling" i called. I could not keep a data connection. I had cell service and could receive calls and texts, but data would just cycle thru 1, 3, 4g, then none. When I called the rep did some digging and quickly kicked me to a "Tier2" rep.
So I tell him my problem. he responds "well, could be your SIM(which is free to replace) or to try a Factory defaults reset." He then proceeds to tell me about free apps for backing up. Something that does not require root. I assume something like titanium backup which is a main reason for many to root their phones and big VZW knows this. This is #1. He then proceeds to tell me about amazons app store, which "offers 1 free app a day". Big gripe from companies is that we rooters are "stealing" paid apps(I have stolen 1 payed app, then proceeded to buy it when the black market went under). That is #2. Without me telling him too much about myself, he goes "so, you seem pretty tech savy with the droid". This is #3.
so with 1, 2, and 3 in mind. Have you seen things like this on other 4g devices. I know they can see it(root). I know they have a way to jack your phone if you are "stealing" the entitlements check, but are they using it? The GSM version has builtin wifi tethering. Do you think that these "BUGS" they found which gave us 4.0.1 and 4.0.2 would have something to do with them trying to make sure we can't "steal" our bandwidth we pay for?
Food for thought. Thoughts? questions? concerns?
Hopefully there isn't any restrictions because I occasionally tether my transformer for easier viewing.

It says right in the press release that they are blocking tethering and charging $20/month for the service. Just like every other VZW phone.

Well yeah they're "officially" blocking it, but with root and whatnot, we should be able to tether freely, hopefully. I tether from my OG all the time, even though it's "blocked"

I know they are blocking wifi tethering but you should still be able to do wired via PDANet(or similiar). but yes, root will be required. on the Rezound they went as far as to add a system process labelled "tetherguard". fun times

I have PDAnet installed on my Droid RAZR, and it works just fine. No redirecting of websites to VZW page to sign up for a tether plan. When I had my DX rooted with GB, I used Wireless Tether and I was directed to VZW's page for tethering plans. RAZR is not rooted either.
I heard about a program called EasyTether that supposedly will allow you to tether without having to root your phone? Has anyone tried it/think it will work?
Tethering works fine after root - no app required (edit: Its now checking subscriptions, but PDANet still works).
WiFi tethering does not work after root on ANY app* - further development will be needed.
*Pretty sure that blocktether thing has returned.
I've been searching relentlessly for a way to get Wireless Tether for Root Users to work on my brand new VZW Galaxy Nexus.
No dice. The Dev has been notified.
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/issues/detail?id=1257
If you install the latest BETA version and select the Samsung Galaxy S2 under device profiles, it ALMOST works, throughs in error in the log: "Activating WiFi interface.... FAILED"
Totally crushed about this. Not sure if it's happening due to a VZW side safeguard or if it's simply a progrmaming issue the dev can fix :\

Ya the stock tethering options still check subscription status.
PDANet does work, though, so that's what I'm using until a working wireless tether surfaces.

I am rooted and can not use the built in hotspot, nor USB tethering.
ROM developers are working on a solution now.
Download SQLite Editor from the market. On YouTube, there are many videos that show how to change the wifi tether permissions using sqlite. You have to be rooted.
I'm not rooted, so I use PDAnet with no problems on my laptop. There is a one time $20 charge to be able to use https websites.
I also use my Bluetooth to tether my iPad and surf the Web that way.

I don't get the "people root so they can steal apps" argument...you realize you don't have to root to download and install apps in Android, right? You get apps the same exact way rooted or non-rooted.

[Q] Which free tethering method should I pursue?

In reading through this forum all day, I am somewhat stuck on my next goal -> free tethering.
SO I currently have root access on my epic 4g touch (sprint) via the method under [ROOT][NCIQ][EG30/EG31/EK02] Auto root your existing stock ROM (w/o ODIN/ROM Flash). I took options A and C for CWM. Now I'm trying to determine which method is best for obtaining the free tethering/hotspot.
1. I have been looking at 2 in particular; one is posted by qbking - in a video dated back to Sept 2011. It is meant for the epic 4g touch although he demo'ed this on an epic 4g - and now all of the comments mention that it didnt work for the 4g touch so I'm somewhat afraid that this method doesnt work at all... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQpIxUxnCqU
2. Then there is a mod posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1390304 which I have to admit is more confusing than anything Ive seen thus far with the number of zips in the post and no clear instruction on installing any of them. It also looks like I'd have to flash my rom in this case?
I'm really curious if the hotspot can be obtained without flashing. if you have recommendations/experience in this portion, please let me know.

No, you just flash the version that corresponds to your radio. It will replace the Sprint Hotspot application to remove the checks to see if you paid for hotspot. As such it is probably the easiest option than messing with Android-wifi-tether. (I have issues with it disconnecting after a while, etc etc)

Google wifi tether should only be used when the carrier has completely removed tethering from your devices settings menue.
Metropcs does this with their smartphones, so everyone on metropcs uses code.Google.Com wifi tether.

Oh this is the exact question I'm looking for and hope you can verify before I perform it. I want to use wifi tether for root users, is that the one you have. It says it requires root and a "netfilter enabled kernel" Now do I have to install a new kernel or the stock kernel have this and all I need to do is get root and install the app?
I have the galaxy s2 for sprint with latetest firmware as of today's date. It says d710.10 for hardware and gingerbread.ek02.
I'm double checking becuase I'm seeing so many people flashing the wrong roms and messing up their phones. Don't want that to happen to me.

How To Tether on Jelly Bean?

Anyone know which program, since the JB 4.1.1 updated (AT&T SGH-I747) will allow tethering preferably both wifi and usb. I tried this one and can't get it to work with the Samsung S3 profile selected or the Galaxy Nexus GSM profile selected.

I'm rooted. That app I referenced specifically says you need a rooted phone. I just don't see the SSID come up on my notebook. I want something that can also tether USB too, as then I don't have to worry about locking down security on the Wifi or draining the phone battery.
What are the options if you root it?

Been searching for an hour now. Tried two other apps. Neither worked. (Neither said root was necessary). Not willing to pay for Foxfi just to see it not work. Elixir 2 people have used but I think this is all pre Jelly Bean, at least for the GSM (AT&T) version of this phone.
Seems maybe we have to wait. All the apps, videos, posts out there seem to be for ICS. Guess this is the downfall when you update within 24 hours of the update being released. Need to let the developers catch up.
I can confirm pdanet works....havent tried foxfi but im sure it does as well considering how similar they work...
Galaxy S III I747
Prior to update I was using FoxFi and it looks like it still works with Jelly Bean but I'm unable to get the Proxy Add-On to work since Jelly Bean.
Do you think I'll get caught tethering if I run FoxFi without the Add-On or does the Add-On only provide a false sense of security and is really not making a difference?
If it makes a difference, I'm on one of the old 2GB plans, not the new shared plans, but not unlimited either. Also, I'm stock, not rooted.
Finally, if you don't think this works, any suggestions that would work in this situation?
Thanks!

I was on the old 5GB plan (the one that allowed tethering) and switched to the new shared plan (since I don't do that much data but do call a lot and wanted the unlimited calling (saves me over a hundred bucks a month)) and on these plans they do allow tethering. From what I understand, you will need to have a rooted phone if you want to tether under any other (older) plan..

I guess we should be specific that we are looking for apps that not only work on JB 4.1.1 but also don't require a tethering or shared data plan. So people say an apps works but fail to point out it's because their carrier is okaying the app since they have a qualifying plan. So pdanet works on JB 4.1.1 SGH-I747 without an AT&T tethering or shared data plan?

No...you should have said "I have no clue what im doing so can you please explain every single detail to me?". WTF does a tethering plan have to do with you being able to tether or not if youre rooted? You need to disable to tethering provision via TB!

Not everyone on here has been on an Android phone and screwing with it all their lives. For example, what the heck is "TB" ? Don't assume everyone has as much experience as you, just because they are a participant on XDA. And I should also add on that requirement, NO CUSTOM ROM.
So an appropriate answer might be the following:
If you are on JB 4.1.1 and want to tether without a tethering plan from your carrier, and you are on the STOCK ROM. You need to do this, this, this and this. Or just post a frickin link to someone who DID take the time to explain it for the rest of us. Does your solution require rooting, or doesn't it. STATE IT. So future people when they search the forums, they don't find a bunch of misleading, dead-end solutions and/or bickering.
I just came from iPhone and I was a jailbreaker. I'm loving the S3 and Jelly Bean. But on the iPhone, I'd jailbreak (equivalent of rooting on Android), install MyWiFi, and DONE and DONE. It seems this was how it was on ICS with this phone. Now on JB, not so simple. There's dozens of posts on several threads on several forums around the Internet of people no longer getting their tethering app to work since JB upgrade. These are both rooted and non-rooted, but they are all STOCK JB ROMs.
So please, tell us the trick to get a stock JB 4.1.1 ROM SGH-I747 AT&T to tether without the plan. We are all ears!

Not sure as I've been to busy with my real life outside of XDA to spend hours reading and reading posts.
Bottom line, if there was an app you can just download and install for ICS before that worked, isn't it just a matter of time until someone publishes an app on Google Play (may require rooting, big deal) that does the same without a bunch of workarounds and crap.
Look one post above yours
Install that zip file via CWM(clockworkmodrecovery)....then download TITANIUM BACKUP (TB...you need the pro version...you can download lucky patcher for that) and go in and freeze the tethering provision app. This will allow you to tether without your carrier knowing...kindof...
P.S. ICS was the same protocol. You have to freeze the tethering provision...
Galaxy S III I747
Thank you. I've got Titanium Backup installed now. So should I just use the built-in AT&T tethering app now or is it 'safer' to use something else?
Found it.
Still no love. CW Recovery and Team Epic Root Installed. TB Pro installed. Tethering Provisioning Uninstalled.
Tried to Tethering Apps on Google Play, neither work. "Free USB Tethering App" and "Wifi Tethering for Root" (tried Auto and Samsung S3 profiles). No Dice. Thought there was an native AT&T app but may have uninstalled it with TB when cleaning out bloatware.
SGH-I747 AT&T
Okay, duh, I found the Tether toggle in Advanced Settings. I also found a couple tether apps that don't require root that actually came up on the network, but I get 'Limited' connectivity indication in Windows with no Internet access.
Now get this, whenever I go into Settings > Advanced > Tether if I toggle it on or off or toggle USB sharing on, I get the message "Settings application has stopped working" Some of the tethering apps also "stop working" when I try to run them even though I see the blue tether notification icon in the status bar and I can see the SSID on the network and connect, but it is as if the phones ability to bridge the wifi hotspot it is providing to the 4G Internet connection is broke.
****. Do I need to load Kies and to a stock firmware restore, or is that not even possible not that I have CW recovery installed. I really really didn't want to get into this Android tweaking Hell and now I'm there. Another wasted frickin weekend! Maybe I'll just go back to iPhone. Hopefully the iOS 6 jailbreak is out now (untethered).
Kind of ticked up about being lead down the road that indicated just freezing the tethering provisioning was the solution to all my woes. Maybe it worked for some (are you on JB 4.1.1 with AT&T SGH-I747???) but not me. After a couple more hours of searching and searching, including all sorts of YouTube videos showing using FoxFi, Wifi Tether for Root, etc, and then a lot of recent comments about it nor working. Anyways.....
Soultion is a newer hacked version of Wifi Tether for Rooted user that is not on the Play Store and the apk has to be downloaded directly. Current version is here:

What a pain in the ass it took to finally find this. Guess that's the price you pay when you are brand new to Android and an OS update comes out two weeks after you got your phone and you install it the day it comes out. Sigh.
Ugh. Got too excited too quick. You can't toggle Wifi back on after shutting down tethering without restarting phone! Guess it's going to be a few more days until some good developers come out with a simple one-app solution without issues. It was WAY easier to get free tethering on the jailbroken iPhone that this. I'm shocked this is so hard right now on Android JB 4.1.1. But I have to remember the OS update just came out.

[Q] how to get Wi-Fi tethering to work

Well I have read through the development thread of ktoonsez and task's kernel and rom and even used yes search in the thread and have come up with no answers. If you are talking about using the WIFI Tether app Jelly Bean essentially broke it. The devs are working on a fix. XDA member Treve has a mod that will get it to work though. His OP is posted in the Verizon forums but I can assure you it works on our AT&T phones. I used it last night. There is an issue worth noting that once you tether and untether your WIFI won't work again until you clear cache and reboot. It is a minor annoyance IMO but I threw it out there so no one freaks out.
If you are talking about straight stock tethering I haven't run into the issue myself. My stock tether/WIFI hotspot works flawlessly. After updating to 4.1.1 did you do a full data wipe? If not I would recommend it. I ran into all kinds of bugs after doing the Kies update. Battery drain, Google Now had a learning disability, etc.
Do a google search for Treve WIFI Tether mod for the link and give it a go. In the OP he says that secure tethering doesn't work. It does. Used it last night as a test.
Also if you have a rooted phone already download mobile odin. You can have the app reflash the stock .tar and inject everoot and SuperSU. That's what I generally do when a new OTA is released. Hasn't failed me yet. Any questions shoot me a PM.

Do a google search for Treve WIFI Tether mod for the link and give it a go. In the OP he says that secure tethering doesn't work. It does. Used it last night as a test.

Wifi Tether works. The old version stopped working for me after upgrading to JB, but I downloaded a different beta. You have to download the TrevE Mod, wifi_tether_v3_3-pre2.apk.
Also I had to change some settings.
Device profile is set to GS3.
Fallback tether is enabled.
Send Netd Max Client Cmd is enabled.
Both Wifi-driver reload options are enabled.
MSS clamping is enabled.
Routing fix is enabled.
This works for me. Sometimes no data will come through but restarting my phone fixes the problem. I'm rooted on stock JB.

Wi-Fi Tether

Since rooting, I have been unable to use the native Hotpot or any of the tethering apps which requires root. Has anyone found a solution for tethering?

on my m8 running viper....I just changed a value in the default.xml file (there was a few versions that forgot to enable the native hotspot for free)....that did the trick....I don't see why it would be terribly different on the m9 if you are S-Off, unlocked and rooted.
You stock or running Viper?

I'm pretty sure the issue here was over debloating... .. the stock tether guard doesn't like being frozen or removed before it's disabled in the xml policy. To be honest.. even after disabling tether guard support I always leave the app remain.
We will know more when the OP gets back home from his trip.
Stock rooted here and it works fine.
Not having root, I still haven't found a way to use the built in hotspot--however--if you disable tethering guard, you will be able to use the built in Bluetooth tether. The major downsides being only being able to connect to one device at a time and download speed is right around 1 mbps.

Yeah, I was googling for a while...
So I tried Foxfi and it didn't work, said it was unable to use wifi tether on new updated system (something like that). But then I looked at other apps to try in the Play Store and saw "Free Tether Unlocker". It only had a 3.5 star rating but I figured why not try it. IT WORKED!!! Was still able to send a text and make a call too.
So anyone on a Verizon device who needs to get wifi tether working, just use Free Tether Unlocker and then Wifi Tether Router and that should do it!
