Blown Speaker
If you had STweaks installed and had the "Speaker Tuning" enabled then set the "Speaker Amplification Offset" high then you will have a high chance of blowing the speaker
probably something other than having a custom rom and the persus kernel.
i have macks all-stars 2.0 rom and the persus kernel with no issues.

Is it just my phone or is the ear speaker volume really low? I have it all the way up and can barely hear. On my other phone, its loud and clear.

How to: REPLACE INCREDIBLE BLOWN SPEAKER
That's for the regular speaker though right? I'm talking about the ear speaker.

Whoops, sorry about that! In that case, I'm not sure about a link.
I can say though that on my phone, the ear speaker is plenty loud if I'm in controlled conditions (i.e. indoors, or a calm day). If I'm in nasty conditions (like outside on a very windy day), then the volume leaves something to be desired, but frankly I've never owned a phone where that wasn't the case.
Best of luck!
I noticed that the Stock setup the earpiece was very low, but practically every ROM I've tried it's much louder (especially the CM's).
Not sure of an easy way to fix your problem without flashing a new ROM though :/
There's an audio boost kernel Ucan try

My speaker sounds like it might be blown... it was working fine and then started acting up. I haven't done anything to cause it that I know of, I have my phone on vibrate 98% of the time. Is it a possible software issue?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Speaker was blown and I got it replaced at a local repair center. According to the tech, it was a combination of a blown speaker and a "known" software issue with gingerbread (ef02). The last part is obviously bs, I was on eb13 (srf 1.1.1) and odin'd to ef02 so I was stock when I took it in so they wouldn't cry that my modifications ruined the speaker.

the epic speaker is crap im soon to blow mine as i blare the music all the time when i take a shower lol
Be sure that you're not experiencing the audio routing bug caused by bluetooth where all audio gets routed through the ear speaker. It happened to me and at first I thought the main external speaker was blown. Only takes a reboot to fix but is the worst Froyo bug IMO and I sure hope 2.3 fixes it.
It had been re booted a few times and had a fresh flash. I hardly used the thing i was on vibrate at least 98% of the time

Hello,
How are you?
So I noticed a small issue with my nexus.
When I am in a Phone Call, the earpiece kind of distorts the voices. It is hard to explain, but it is kind of like a robotic echo voice...
The situation returns to normal if I lower the Volume to about 40%.
The voice over the earphones or the external rear loudspeaker are fine though...
So, based on this, is it a defective earpiece, or a software problem that can be solved with an upgrade to radio/baseband?
Anyone else had this issue?
Thank you.
Cheers!
I too am having an issue with the volume and quality of sound coming from the ear piece. I can barely hear anyone and if there is any kind of ambient noise around forget it. From what I've gathered it is a bug in JB or 4.1. There are a few fixes floating around to increase the overall system volume, but they seem to fall short when it comes to the in call ear piece volume.
I have tried build prop edits with no luck.
What version of Android are you using 4.0 or 4.1?
I am going back to 4.0 Cyanogen Mod 9 to be exact and will see if this fixes it, if not this phone is going to have a date with a Big hammer.
Maybe some of the folks on here will chime in and offer some help or suggestions?

Hello,
Thank you for your reply.
I am running the stock 4.1.1.
My problem is not the volume. I have to lower the volume to be able to have a good quality output.
If I increase the volume, the sound increases, but the voice on the other side becomes distorted un a robotic maner.
It is har do explain.
Cheers!

Wow I wish mine was loud, I may go by the Sprint store and play with their demo phone.
If it sounds like the person is speaking through a kazoo, you have a bad ear piece. Had same issue on first gen sgs.
good day.
So I finally broke down and called a guy I knew that worked at the Sprint store he said to bring it in. I asked if it was cool that it was rooted and he said no prob, they placed a test call and said and the tech said," you have a bad speaker come back in a few hours and it will be fixed."
You do not know how many hours I spent looking up fixes, flashing this trying different kernels blah, blah, blah.
Take it in and have them look at it, just be cool with them and don't try to BS them. Hope this helps a little.

You will need these three apps
Voodoo LOUDER, speakerboost, and volume boost. All of which can be found in the play store or app store, whatever you call it. If you already brought Voodoo LOUDER like I did great! If not well you will needs it. For volume boost, there are two versions of the app, the 7 days trail version and the full paid version. Both work great but of coarse with the trail version you have 7 days of use. Spearkerboost is completely free by the way.
Step 1. Launch voodoo LOUDER, follow what the app tells you to do and once everything is set. Do the following.
Limit > Maximum Boost > +6 dB
Next got to slider set the volume to +6 dB.
Step 2. Launch volume boost go to setting and check Auto start.
Step 3. Launch speaketboost got setting > maximum allowed boost > 100% then check everything else on the settings screen.
Step 4. Play your music.
Issues:
The paid version of volume boost will seem to be low at first, simply lower the phone volume and bring it back up.
Speaketboost goes on and off sometimes.
Disclaimer: If you damage your ears, it wasn't my fault.
Is this really necessary? Is the sound that low for some of you? I didn't notice any issues for me on. AOSP or PA. Aren't you afraid you are going to blow your speaker with these extreme settings? I would be a little concerned.
I believe I experienced a little bit of an issue in Skype but I wasn't sure if it was Skype's issue. I have used some of these apps in the past but it would also boost ring tones which I am not to fond of. I currently use SpeakerBoost on a low setting and it seems to be fine for me.
Just wanted to share my thoughts.

Its really about the headphones not speakers. And yes for some of us its that low.

Indeed, I also found that the sound coming from the headset jack was too low for my tastes. Using Power Amp, there are settings (or rather a preamp) that allows for the volume to be increased but at the cost of major sound degradation. Bass becomes distorted, overall sound is blown out.
I'd be afraid that these apps might do the same? I wanted to try Voodoo sound on my last JB attempt but unfortunately the kernel wouldn't allow it.
I'm too cheap for the paid version...
while a workaround, it isnt a very good one, the sound out the headphones is very, very crappy. so crappy that i have been dealing with the low volume. you can say "is the sound out the headphone jack that big of an issue" but i didnt pay $150 for my headphones to listen to classical crap that would be best at low volumes.
thankfully i paid for power amp, which helps the issue a bit, but not much. by far the best music player for people who know how to tweak an equalizer
cant wait till its fixed, i have a pair of brand new skullcandies waiting to be used

I'll take your jab as a playful one...
Regardless of your taste in music, all should be able to be played at ear melting levels without degradation of quality or distortion of sound. I think about all the clubs I've DJed over the past 12 years and how some of the best systems were the ones that didn't need sheer power to sound good. Clean sound is not necessarily loud sound.
That said, it remains that there is something in the way JB is talking to the audio chip that is not allowing for power AND clean sound to come through. This is why I've stuck with ICS running Power Amp. Until this issue can be fixed, I just can't use JB.
And if I'd paid $150 for some headphones, I'd be expecting some good, clean and LOUD sound as well...

Not sure if this'll help since you're on PA.

With "Skullcandies" you wouldn't notice the difference between decent or crappy sound.
Just kidding...well not really, but I'm not a basshead myself, but to each their own.

Are you using the headphone jack to listen to music? I've tried it on 3 different music players, apollo, google music and double twist. They are all quiet. I can usually have my radio on 30 and its plenty loud but now I've got to turn it up to 40 (maxed out on my radio) and it still isn't loud enough. It doesn't help I have a loud car to begin with, borderline race car.
why not try ac!d audio technology .zip? works better than beats audio.. it actually has beats audio, sony xloud and other engines incorporated and sounds clean

The N7 is just too loud. I like that it CAN get loud but it doesn't get quiet enough. Even 1 tick seems like its super loud. At night in bed I usually have to turn the audio off to watch videos or use headsets. I had to turn my keyboard volume to 1 and system volume to 1 cause the clicks were too loud.
I know this is a weird question but anyone know a way to lower the lower volume settings? I'm running CM Kanged and perhaps they have the volume increased for other devices.
On my OG N7 I would have it 3-4 clicks in or higher. 1 seems like 7 compared to the old N7.
Too damn loud. I know there are apps to make it louder but I haven't seen anything to lower it. Some custom ROMs can provide more steps for greater control but 1 is too loud. I need like a .15 or .25
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
So totally agree, too loud! no idea what the solution is either and I've looked around. Hopefully there's some mod for stock but I'd be willing to do just about anything.
Er... my shiny new N7 is not too loud. (Production date September 13.)
It's significantly louder than my old N7, but far from being really "loud".
Also, it does absolutely not have the reported problem of hiss when turning down volume.
Perhaps production batches differ in loudness?
Mine doesn't hiss and I'm not saying it is glass shattering but at night when everyone is trying to relax I have 2 options, Volume Muted or Volume Notch 1. Volume Notch 1 is still too loud and my family gives me the stink eye.
The max sound is fine but I think the lower portions should go lower.

Agreed. I suggest using XPosed Framework if you are rooted, and look for the XVolume module (last module in the downloads section of the app). It breaks the volume into 30 steps. I'm going to test this out for myself and let you know my results.
EDIT: Doesn't seem like it helped very much.
