Firstly, I understand that this Dev and his kernel are not supported/hosted by XDA for various reasons, but the kernel does feature in certain ROMs which are hosted here, so I think my questions are valid.
I am curious as to people's experiences of this kernel and its performance on the Galaxy Note II. Is it performing at a comparable level on the N7100 as what has been reported with the Galaxy S II, in terms of battery life and user experience? (With regard to the GSII, it is certainly depicted as some kind of "wonder kernel")
I'm new to Samsung devices in general (I came from an HTC Desire HD - yes, you can laugh now), so I hope that forum users can accommodate for my ignorance of the history and application of this particular kernel. Search failed me (both Google and XDA).
Also, does anyone know why Abyss necessitates its own modded CWM Recovery??? Or is this simply the choice of the Developer?
Thanks guys.
One bump before I let this thread die a natural death.

Hello xda-developers.
My name's Mirko and I from Italy. It's my first time that I post in this beautiful forum of all kind of developers
I have Galaxy Nexus (GSM. Italian version) with Android 4.1.1 stock. My small questions are:
- I suffer from short battery life, it's better change kernel or ROM?
- If it's better change kernel, what you can recommend to me and why?
- If it's better change ROM, what you can recommend to me and why?
At the moment only these are my questions.
Thanks for all answer.. It's my first time that I unlock bootloader and root my device (I have to do it), and I'm a full newbie of modding
Thanks thanks and thanks, this forum is the best.. Keep on the fantastic work and congratulation to all modder, staff and all!
P.s. sorry for my bad english
Best Regards.
- Mirko Pizii
Before you do any of the stated you need to find out weather your phone is gsm or cdma because you CANNOT put a CDMA on a GSM phone or the other way around.
Kernels affect battery life. I recommend Franco kernel or Lean kernel
Roms affect user interface (the OS operating System on the phone) - I recommend for a starting stable rom Cyanogen (its what MOST roms are based off of) then if you want to tweak your phone more I recommend CodeNamedDroid or ParanoidAndroid. (these are the three that I use the most)
also i would recommend this thread about battery life http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1599025
i hope my english has not confused you. Dont be surprised if noone else responds to you in this page, they have a bad habit of doing this.

Hey Weapondrift, I realize that maybe my Galaxy Nexus is GSM.
I give a watch to Franco kernel or Lean kernel but all say it's better both.. Don't know what the difference before start my first flash.
Thanks for roms..
What do you think? It's ok only kernel or it's better change rom?
Thanks for battery life thread, I'll follow
No no, your english won't confuse me.. I can understand but I have problem with speak to other
Oh.. Really they have this bad habit?
Thanks for you answer, friend

Franco's has horrible battery life...
paranoidandroid with trinity is the best imo
Yes, custom kernels can improve battery life if you're willing to trade in a little performance. Can't have both at the same time.

I beg to differ..
I find trinity performs just as good and adds like 2 hours screen on time

You may of course. I'm not convinced though.

I was hoping to get some input from all of you on what your preferred setup for overclocking/undervolting the One V are. I've been playing with custom roms since I got my device but really haven't put much time into finding the best settings to combine performance/battery life. Running the plain CM10 rom I dont find performance to be an issue but I'd love to know how much I can undervolt the device at different cpu ranges without hitting any huge instability issues (and overclocking isn't ruled out if I ever feel like pumping even more performance out of it)
Thanks in advance
There is.a.thread asked about this use search button

Sorry about that, I assumed it might be a topic that's been covered but when I search all I found was how-to's and not necessarily the actual values used. Excluding topics for other devices but I assume hardware differences would lead to different values being better/worse.
Search in the KISS kernel thread

Awesome, thanks.
Please ask all questions in the Q&A section. Thread moved there.
Hello fellow XDA brethren!
I am reaching out to whomever may be able to give me an "advanced" type of explanation in regards to
modified kernels being applied to my phone.
T-Mobile Galaxy SIII (32Gb White)
I seem to be having issues with many of the kernels offered by some of the excellent developers in the t999 forum.
Namely, ktoonsez, and the other famous dev who's name escapes me right now.
When I flash kernels like those above, my main symptoms are:
Artifacting / Glitchyness in GUI.
Now... I know that some kernels are geared towards battery life and are undervolted to a point, I've tried everything,
volting back up. I've been flashing every one of them properly as well. I know that people say "all phones aren't created
equal", but i refuse to believe that mine is so whack that I cant even use anything other than stock kernels.
I firmly believe that these symptoms are from GPU overclocks that my phone simply cannot handle, (explains artifacts?).
I can use different roms with their respective kernels such as CM10, and a few of the other popular TW roms that are offered.
Here's what I was wondering:
Is there any application that I can use to control GPU overclock (to see if tweaking with this fixes it, to narrow it down
that my phones GPU is just very sensitive)
Are there any kernels out there for touchwiz that give me some nice benefits that dont have any GPU overclock?
What other methods can I fool around with to see exactly what part of my phone is weak?
Any suggestions are appreciated!
I get LOUSY batterylife / performance on tmo stock kernel.
If it were a PC, the first thing I would suspect of causing the artifacting issue is bad video memory. Combine that with the poor performance on stock, it stands to reason that you may have gotten a bad phone from the factory. I would suggest that you consider simply having it replaced under warranty, if you do have bad RAM in the phone the problems will only get worse.
Just switched from Nexus4 to Galaxy S4, being able to add extended battery and SD card were the deciding factors over Nexus5.
Trying to decide which ROM I should go with. Considering Stock Kit Kat or CM11, or staying with Default provided by Samsung.
I'm familiar with the feature differences between the 3 ROMs.
Which of the 3 currently offers best overall experience/performance, stability & battery life.
Thanks!

I personally run Gummy ROM at the moment. It is cm11 with added features. I love the stock kit kat experience with a few added features so that's why I chose gummy. As far as stock touchwiz we have a love hate relationship. I love the stock camera because nothing compares to its features and clarity but unfortunately it is on available on stock ROM. Also I love the watch on app that uses IR to control TV and cable. Their are alternative apps to use IR for kit kat but none compare to watch on. But besides those two features I hate the slowness, ui colors, DPI, and just about everything else about touchwiz. If only we could have those two featured on kit kat ROMs. Any how I would suggest trying all options for yourself and deciding. It really boils down to personal preference and what you use your phone for most.

Sigh....threads like this are not permitted on XDA. This is wa standard 'rom comparison' thread and they are not allowed at all.
The reason is because there is no answer to which one is better or have a better experience or battery life.
All of those questions depend on you and your use and your taste. The rom I love the most that gives the best battery life for the way I use the phone may be the worst possible combination for you.
The ONLY way to decide what the best rom for YOU is is to try them out and test a couple and get an idea of what is best FOR YOU.

Hey skipjacks, to be fair the user only has 6 posts so he is obviously new to the community here. I am a long time member here and am aware of the avoidance of threads such as these but it is kind of an unspoken rule. As a new user assuming he or she read the forum rules this is not listed any where there. Maybe a mod can see this and suggest adding it to the rules as I agree these threads never end well but let's not beat the person up lol.

Who's beating anyone up?
I said these threads aren't allowed. Then politely explained why.
If you're coming from a nexus 4 go with GPE Roms . Add xposed framework and gravity box module and you'll never look back. Fast, snappy, stable and as close to AOSP as it'll get. You can even have your navigation bar to save those hardware keys.
For the reasons mentioned above, this thread is closed.
Users need to read and make their own determinations as to what it is they desire.
Faux123 recently posted a thread releasing his custom kernel for the N1, but for a not-so mobile/linux savvy person like myself I don't have a great deal of knowledge on kernels, or what it adds/does.
What are the advantages or even disadvantages of using a custom kernel, like Faux? Does it save battery, or does it allow for overclocking? Like, what are the capabilities of using custom kernels over stock?
I'm currently on CM11 nightlies.
Any information is appreciated, and thanks in advance!
First I would read the changelog linked in the thread. Then after reading through, you should Google what each item means if you aren't familiar with it (A lot of them are noted as to what they do).
I would not suggest flashing a custom kernel if you aren't sure about how it can help your phone, and what risks you might be facing.
Always research before flashing something new, especially a kernel. :highfive:

Yeah I wouldn't flash something unless I know what it did. On my previous phone (HTC Sensation) I had a few custom kernels flashed with the ROMs i used but other than that I have no experience with kernels.
I have read the changelog, and I can see what most of the items do, but specifically I have no idea. Reading through there are options to overclock/change voltage and increase or decrease battery life depending on profiles and governors used.
Overall I was wondering if it is worth flashing for a medium user. I'm not a developer, but i'm also not an avid mobile gamer. I mainly use internet, social apps and SMS, but don't like slowing of devices. Would the custom kernel be able to prolong battery life (or give other great advantages) while still maintaining the extremely fast response that N1 has already?

You might get some battery life improvements by changing some voltages to decrease the power used. It shouldn't impact the performance if it's a mild change.
