The only successful way I've been able to add to preload was to use an existing flashable zip and just replace the apk, or you can add out the ROM of your choice and reflash.
Something in the process of adding a symlink via root explorer borks it.
The other thing is you can't replace a process in use ie, systemui, services etc... using root explorer, it boot loops me every time:beer:
If you get really hard up finding the zip you need you can create or modify the updater script from a ROM to have only the apk and permissions you want by deleting the other stuff in there, just be sure to delete anything that formats your mount points.

Is there anyway i can backup my whole ROM as a zip file? I want to be able to bring it to my computer, edit some png's, then reflash and have the modifications up. If there is such thing please let me know. I am extremely interested in this!!
Why not just transfer the rom.zip you used to flash and edit the framework-res and systemui.apk's and then gut a flashable zip and place those in appropriate folder and flash that? That's what I do if you need a plain empty flashable I can upload one for you
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
Let me elaborate on that
You take a flashable that already contains an updater-script in it aka meta-inf.
Make a framework folder and this is where you will put your signed and renamed Framework-res.apk then make a folder named System and in system folder make an App folder and this is where you'll place the SystemUI.apk.
*note* you need to sign these when your done swapping pngs and rename them appropriately.
Once done sign the whole.zip boot into cwm and flash it this will replace the stock framework-res etc and you'll be good to go
http://db.tt/xfQOB8Kg
Use this .zip for your flashable this will do all the work in cwm mounting wise. Just delete the folders in the system folder and do what I told you above

What do you mean? All you'd have to do is open the zip and find the .apks extract them edit the pngs and sign them put them in the flashable and flash it... I'm not understanind your issue

its because what i want is literally like a clockworkmod backup but as a flashable zip. This is not possible is it? I want all my settings and referennces to be saved along with my messages etc.

No if you create this flashable what you edit to put it this it will only change what your flashing like if you put nothing in the flashable then nothing will change. If you want to flash a vending.apk put in this flashable and flash it that's all that's going to change is the replacing of the market...

Lol if you have windows 32bit ill find my installer on my pc for the apksigner and ill upload it for you xD
If you plan on editing an applications png then once you've opened it and replaced said pngs then it needs to be resigned and renamed to not have the "signed" in it
Signing means its certifed and has the ability to be installed as application

lol upload it please. im using apk manager 4.9 but man this really tough. can u elaborate a bit more? im so sorry lol im just not grasping it.
do not give up on me!! lol
how bout this look: so im trying to make a minor change to an app just for fun. its airdroid. so is the first step to extract the apk or to decompile?
and lol i was trying to accomplish the task of making mynandroid backup a flashable zip but this interests me to.
So, lets get clear, what exactly r u helping me do now? In my head im thinking ur trying to help me edit an app and then install it in my phone right?
if im wrong then tell me what we are trying to do!! lol
Yeah that sounds like its much more difficult then what I use what I use you drag and drop the finished apk and it signs it lol simple give me a minute to find it upload it and paste a download link..pc sucks arse phone is much faster....
Edit: yes I'm helping you edit an apk and then have it install on the phone or be able to be pushed to the /system/app folder...

All phones are different. Some have a yaffs2 mount system, others like our devices, have an ext4 mounting system. Here is my systemUI zip i use and created. Have fun!
You should be able to download elesbb's zip. With root explorer extract all and replace his systemui.apk with yours, rezip and flash away. And be sure to thank him for the template/updater-script.

Hey guys, i tried flashing a theme which was the circular battery percentage w/15 toggles last night, via cwm and when i rebooted after flashing it took longer than usual and when it finally booted i got a pop up saying " unfortunately system ui has stopped working" how do I fix it? i didnt have any backup (yes I know im a genius), now, i was wondering, does any of you guys have the stock system ui files to flash it via cwm?
here is the h9 one
thanks, man but when i try and install it it tells me that the app was not installed
you dont intall it rename your old systemui.apk to systemui.bak and place the new one in the same spot it should be system/app then reboot your phone and it should work or you can reflash your rom with out wipe and that will fix it too

Use an app called root explorer or ef file explorer push the systemui.apk in system/app, set the permissions and then reboot your phone.

thanks for the answers guys, sorry for being such a noob, but where can i find the systemui.apk file? in order to replace it
in the folder system/app
is there any tweak i must know of in order to replace/rename the file systemui.apk it doesn't let me do anything because it's a read only file
and does it matter if mine is a telus i747m?
what app are you using to do this
root explorer, with superuser permissions
ok when your in the folder where systemui is click mount r/w at the top of the screen then you can rename it
thanks man, you saved my life right there, now, the other question is, where did you get the systemui.apk file? and could I find it for a galaxy note i717d as well?
i pulled it from the zip in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1902178
as for the note you should be able to pull it from a stock rom in its section on these forums
Thank you
Thanks so much I was finally able to get 7.1 to work with your UI file!!:good:
No USER friendly! Sorry I can't create update.zip
Need Safestrap for BackUP and change permissions (chmod -R 755 /system/framework/framework-res.apk).
This mod can open for you full screen display in Razr M without loose toggle bar, just copy framework with style what you want to /system/framework dir, and change permission to file.
Files in zip for 4.1.1 & 4.0.4 Android.
noVbutton - no navibar in Vertical orientation, yes in Horizontal
noV-Hbutton - no navibar in Vertical orientation, no in Horizontal
origin - original file
Of course you can change all manually if decompile framework-res.apk and find file named dimens.xml

Developer only?
Does this work for the developer and regular versions? Anyone tried this with the official JB OTA from Verizon?
I used Root Explorer, not a terminal. Running on stock Verizon Jelly Bean, retail version.

It Works!
Yeah, FINALLY! Get rid of that craptastic waste-of-space navbar.
If anybody want to know, here's how I did it:
Note: I used root explorer
1. I used my windows 7 machine to extract the version of framework-res I wanted.
In my case, i'm on the 4.1.1 JB Verizon OTA, so I chose the 4.1.1 noV-Hbutton.
2.Copy the framework-res of your choice to the root of your internal storage card.
3. Using your file manager (Root explorer in my case) copy the framework file from your internal storage to "\system\" NOT "\system\framework\". Note, if you do this step and it asks you if you want to overwrite "framework-res.apk" STOP!
4. Using your file manager, write down the permissions for your existing "\system\framework\framework-res.apk".
5.Go to the framework-res.apk you just copied "\system\framework-res.apk" and change permissions to match those of your existing framework-res file.
6. AFTER the permissions have been changed and verified (I exited completely out of root explorer, then re-opened it and double checked that the permissions where the same) you can safely move and over-write the file in "\system\framework\".
7. Here's the reason. If you just copy the modified framework file straight from your internal memory to its home in "\system\framework\" the permissions won't be right, and there is a VERY good chance you will end up in an endless bootloop. Copying the file to "\system" first gives you the opportunity to modify its permissions BEFORE overwriting the existing framework file.
Good luck!
Update: Not sure why, and it isn't causing any problems, but every time I reboot the phone, it goes through the "android is upgrading your apps" dialogue".
Guess I got lucky avoiding a bootloop. I just copied the new file, went to /system/framework, renamed the current file, and pasted in the new one. Then all the applications crashed, I rebooted, and changed the permissions. I did have to sign back into all my accounts (Google, Facebook, etc), but zero issues since then.
I'm still loving it! The nav buttons took up so much space. The new version of LMT that you can trigger from the bottom makes it perfect.

I got moved the new framework file into the folder except I accidentally deleted it at the same time. Everything started to "stop working" and after I did a hard reset recovery (wipe data/factory reset + wipe cache partition) it stays stuck on the "android" boot loop (past the motorola logo) any help on restoring my phone??

I would like to do this for TB. Are you using apktools?
im running cm10 beta on my razr m and i found that simply adding "qemu.hw.mainkeys=1", to the end of your build.prop without the " then reboot. This will make the bottom nav bar disappear.
I found this by accident attempting to make the nav bar translucent so im not sure why it works, but it does for me.

Yea just decompile the framework from the rom you want and edit the lines in the op to all zeros. It's located in the "values/dims.xml" (I think). Recompile apk then drop in the meta folder from the original framework inside the new framework (I used 7zip). Just copy to phone, set permissions, and reboot.

I have the same problem.N5100 with chinese as default. I'd like to change that to samsung.
After pasteing you have to change the permissions of the pasted files to match the permissions of other files there.
I've never pasted apks, but changing the host file I have to fix permissions to rw-r--r--. Maybe you can paste, reboot into recovery and fix permissions to correct the permissions.

User_99 has a valid point that I overlooked.
If you want to try anyway:
(This is for root explorer options/methods may vary with other apps but it should give you an idea.) After pasting the files long press them to bring up the options. Press permissions, make sure read and write are checked for owner, and only read for groups and others. Then reboot for good measure.
To fix permissions in recovery (instead of using the method above) it depends on the recovery you have installed. Cwm has a fix permissions option under 'advanced'. Twrp has one too but I'm not well versed in it to guide you to it. After running the fix permissions option reboot.
As user_99 stated tho, if they are tied to the stock framework it still won't work.
