[Q] Best radio for Bell GSM Galaxy Nexus (Montreal,QC) - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hey guys,
I'm curious as to which radio has worked best for you guys with Bell Canada. I'm situated in Montreal, QC. (I don't know if that detail will help at all)
I currently have Baseband version i9250XXLJ1 installed by default. I get fairly decent download speeds (roughly 3mb down), although I get a lot of dropped calls, dead zones and area's with very poor reception compared to my mates.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I've been having the same issue as well. I had my original Gnex that I got with bell. it broke recently and I got a new replacement Galaxy nexus....Same dropping call issue.
the problem I have is I'll be on a call for like....5 mins and all of a sudden the person on the other end cuts out, then I try to hang up the call but it's almost like the phone freezes for 15 or 20 seconds and then returns to normal, at which point I call the person back. It's really annoying and since I can't make the phone emulate the problem, Bell won't replace it for that reason. If you've found a fix, please let me know!

Reception with S620 Excalibur

Okay, I need help, I thought my network was too blame but I think it may be the S620. I've had other phones they've all worked in my basement, but this phone keeps dropping calls.
How do I know if I'm using the right bands; that is 850/1900?
I'm getting sick of dropping calls..... It will show good sig one second and then drop to nothing. I updated my Rom to then one that is posted here and I thought it got better, but it didn't.
Other than the basement thing, the phone is perfect.... but I don't get how my A1200, L2, Vk2000, Treo 650, w810i all worked fine in my basement and not this one, is it the fact that it's a Smartphone?
Any insight is appreciated.... Thanks in Advance.
oh, I'm with Rogers in Canada.
previously some of the HTC smartphone radio firmwares were known to have problem with US GSM frequencies. Namely: HTC Tornado.
could you please post your radio frimware details, please?

ok, this is most recent ROm as far as I am concerned.
could you please do following:
in device Settings -->phone--> networks:
menu--> select network.
wait for the list to populate. now select the network you are with. confirm.
now change network selection form automatic to manual. confirm selection.
that should improve reception in low signal situation.
I do suspect that connection is being dropped as soon as signal level is dropped below certain level.
please let me know if that helps.

Yeah, as soon as there is one little bump or no bumps it goes silent and the call drops. I'll try the setting you gave and go from there. Thanks.
Can you please help with my reception.
Can someone please punch in *#*#364#*#* for me and tell me what line LAC reads. I believe this is what band the phone is using.
Mine is always on 1900, which would explain my calls dropping in my basement.
Please verify.
Thanks.

so much for that theory, I guess my network is not that good with this phone. My brother's 9100 doesn't drop calls in our basement so I guess it's just my phone.
4mynikka, my Dash does this too. I really like this phone but the constant dropping calls and the calls going silent then drop (in my home with 3 -4 bars in the signal) is driving me nuts. Yesterday the only way I could get a good signal was to stand on one foot by the window. This is 2007 and the reception issues like this should be non existant in these kinds of devices period.
If I don't find a solution I'm selling my phone. Maybe it'll work better in someone else's house

Momentary, I called into TMO yesterday shortly after I made that post yesterday. While on the phone with TMO, the tech did a test on my phone from there and then checked my area and discovered other complaints from TMO customers in this area and said the problem is due to some outages.
He asked me to remove my battery for 30 secs and power back up. After I booted the phone up, he then went on the say they should be back up and running full force by early this week and that my problems should go away...
Shortly afterward, I had my first 2 and a half hour conversation here at home. I must say, reception has been better than before now but its not perfect...doable but not perfect. I think those tests did something...whatever it was its working...

New verizon user

I was with t-mobile for 8 years and decided to try verizon for 2 years after hearing how good the network is. I thought there's no better time then now considering I have 275 in bestbuy gift cards and this amazing phone is 300. After 2 days of use it seems the network is just OK don't know if there are still bugs to be worked out of LTE network or if its the rom I'm on. Before flashing the rom the signal struggled also? Didn't have a whole lot of time to test as I rooted and had a rom an hour after getting my phone (live for the development) Does anyone have a clue on what's up. Verizon says my area in Cleveland (mistake on the lake) has good coverage and friends have said nothing but good things also. Thanks community! Love ya guys and girls out there

You might want to try flashing a different radio in your respective development forum, it's kind of hit or miss between regions so you'll have to see which works best for you
radio flash may not fix signal its been pretty common issue with vzw nexus users as i myself still experience it
I had a Razr for a month before the Nexus and my wife still has a Razr. Other than the well-publicized nationwide outages, voice and data are rock solid on that phone.
My stock Nexus has been anything but. I love voice and data several times a day. Hoping an update will improve things or that I got a bad unit. I have a replacement on the way as my headphone jack doesn't output stereo.
Certainly nothing scientific but in my experience the Verizon network is the best there is (I've been on T-mobile and Sprint, never ATT).

Can't speak to the voice/data dropping, but as per the headphone jack, I know this may sound like I'm talking down to you, but I'm really not: Did you try pushing the headphone plug all the way in until it clicks into place?
Samsung phones for some reason have very tight headphone connections. On my Vibrant, and on my GNex, I had to push the plug in pretty hard to get it to go all the way in. On the Vibrant, I thought I had the same exact problem as it was only outputting to the left speaker, but then I gave it a nice little push and it was fine.
Just thought I'd pass that along.
I've been on Verizon for quite a few years, with a bit of time on other networks through family phones or work phones. the network really is solid. data rates on 3G do not compare to good HSPDA, but LTE is fantastic. as far as the nexus itself, I have found that it has the exact same voice reception as my three previous android devices, and actually think the 3G data works better most of the time. now, the signal indicator is always lower, but actual signal strength seems to be identical, regardless of how many "bars" there are.

No offense taken ;-)
Actually I tried everything. I use it with the headphones plugged all the way in, and it worked for a couple of weeks and then suddenly stopped working. I tried a different pair of headphones too. The only time it does work is if I hold the headphone plug just barely into the jack. If I let go it falls right out.
Helluva silly thing to go wrong.
Alottt of threads have harked about the verizon gnex having poor connection. In myself have switched 3 different phones. And still have the issue. Tech support even tested them and said themselves there is definently and issue. Google code has ALOT of tickets specifying the same thing. This is slowly cooking into something serious
I was this tmobile for 7+. Took my wife's Verizon plan..we switched...she can even tell the poor reception. I just want to know if this can be fixed software wise because...I reaaallly like this phone but its very scary.
Your definitely not alone guys. This will gain traction in the coming days

Thanks for all the replies! My guess after reading all the post is that its still a major work in progress. Verizon has a lot of users and a major Rep to hold up so they'll probably fix it and not leave us in a bad situation?

LTE is still in Beta stage for sure. Obviously they'll figure it out eventually. It's their long term strategy to go all LTE for voice and data.
I too have this issue. Signal is significantly lower and I often lose signal altogether. Switching from 3G to 4G is also flaky. Just for the hell of it I called up VZW support and they said it's a work in progress and they are working with Samsung to get a resolution.

I usually just leave mine in CDMA mode only due to the 4G/3G switching. I definitely get weaker signal in my house and slower LTE data speeds with the GNex compared to the Rezound I had for several weeks.

I too leave mine in CDMA mode for most of the time. Signal can still be -83 dBm and it can drop off to -120 dBm at any given time, or drop signal completely and show 0 dBm.
I am having the same issues and have a thread going at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1403133
This is seeming to be widespread so hopefully there is a fix in the near future. For now, the 4.03 radio update others have mentioned helped me quite a bit, although it did not fix it. You can find it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1403133 if you have not seen it already.
I am also in the same boat as you as I rooted to install CM9 the same day I got the phone. After reading the forums I believe the issue lies in the radio software (hopefully not hardware) and not with the ROM itself since CM9 is still very beta.

T989D Reception issues with Wind

I got an unlocked galaxy s2x and im currently using it with wind. Everything is fine when i have full bars in areas with good reception. In areas with poor reception such as my basement and certain parts of the city, it says I have 2-3 bars and the signal quality is around -93db and everything sucks after. My friends ask why they cant connect to me and people on the other end of my phone calls say that my voice is scrambled. For text and mms messages, when I try to send them it almost always fails.
Just wondering, anyone having similar issues? Is it my device? Are other people on the wind, moblicity or even telus networks also experiencing this?
My fellow co-workers and I just got this phone at work. And it seems a couple of us are having spotty issues. We are on Telus. We seem to be having more Hello? Hello? Can you hear me? moments then we did with our Telus Mike phones. I am running Juggernaut 4.1 and everyone else is stock. I am looking into trying a new radio.
it depends in your area
i'm on Wind no issues at all

Its strange though cause when I had my samsung vibrant, I was able to make calls and recieve messages in my basement. I decided to test my s2x and vibrant together in my basement. The vibrant had a db level of -103 and my s2x has -94db. I was able to make calls and people said my voice wasnt distorted at all. When I tried with the s2x again, people said they couldnt hear me or they said my voice was scrambled and distorted.
I dont know if its my radio or if its with wind. If its the radio, im hoping an update from telus would be able to fix it.
you can also try one of the custom ROMs from the DEV section
i'm running Jugger

I'll be honest with your half of your issue is WIND related. Not phone related. I use to be with Wind and I can tell you.. I hated it. I live in an apartment so even at times my phone (previously) would randomly disconnect itself and reconnects.. or I'd have 1 - 2 bars. I'm in the major city of Toronto so signal is no exception.. However.. its not the same.. as they say. The signal I receive from Wind was horrible. I had to go back with Telus and I've had next to no problem with Telus.
I have the exact same setup and not having that severe of a issue at all. I do have trouble with certain spots within toronto but most of the time it works fine.

I'm not so sure that it is depends only with operator.
I'm leaving in Europe, but have similare problems with scrambled voice during phone calls and drops calls.
Before I used Samsung Vibrants, Captivate and Infuse. All of them works in same locations without any problems and voice quality was amazing.
I tested two different unlocked Herculeses t989, with two differnt operators and all available radio' modems for AT&T/Rogers Skyrockets and T-Mobile/Telus T-989. Both t-989 have same issues with all modems and voice quality worst compare Infuse/Captivate/Vibrant.
Both t989 runs stock rooted roms
My operator data range:
GSM/GPRS/EDGE 900Mhz/1800Mhz
UMTS/WCDMA/HSPA+ 2100Mhz
well in OP's case it's definitely Wind the phone network, if you go to the Wind forum, you can see people complaining the same thing with every and any cell phone ever built
I'd say 80% of it is Wind's fault, and 20% the phone. Flash the T-Mobile radio and see if it makes a difference. When I made the switch to Wind from Mobilicity, EVERY text would fail even though they have a tower less than a km from my house. I flashed the T-Mobile radio from Mr. X's thread and now I've had a dramatic change in service quality.
I wonder if I did that when I was with Mobilicity, maybe it would have made things better too :/

People do complain but its also exaggerated and inflated by rumours by their competitors. I remember this Guy from bell who said its much better to go with them because wind phone calls will fail a third of the time which is simply not true. It fails maybe 1 out of 15 times and I'm not paying 80 dollars per month to be with Rogers or bell. If I'm paying the lowest rate on the market right now I'm gonna expect occasional failures in service.

and if i do, is only when i have absolutely no connection as in Zero bars (which well it;s very obvious why lol )

Im also on wind. I agree with flashing your modem. I notice improvement on my coverage.
I can tell you right now its not wind. I've been with them for almost a year now and everything has been solid except when i go out of the city and I have to pay for extra roaming charges. I used my samsung vibrant (t959) on winds network since day 1 right till I got the s2x. I was able to make calls in my basement and in areas with 1-2 bars and everything just worked fine. With my s2x, when i have 1-2 even sometimes 3 bars, calls dont get connected through, my messages wont send or recieve, and my data doesnt work. I have to have the full 4 bars for it to be able to work well.
No reception issues here
I live in Kitchener and I've had the Optimus 2X and now the Galaxy S2X on WIND. I haven't noticed any differences in reception, but it could be that I just don't notice. My brother has the G2X now - there's a spot near the university that should be covered that I've been having issues getting a signal with. Perhaps I'll take his phone and test it out sometime.
I definitely don't have as much issue as the previous poster. Even with 2 bars of service my data and texting works fine. 0 to 1 bar is a little sketchy, but that's to be expected. I flashed the T-Mobile radio the second day I got this phone, just because I thought it would help.

i don't think Wind sells Signal Boosters, and most people will not even know how to install one or want to afford one, as average price is around $350
if you buy one for Telus it will not offer AWS for Wind
so why would you want to get a signal booster from Telus? it does not compute

[Q] Verizon Galaxy Nexus 3G Upload???

So I am in a 3g only area. I have had several 4g phones (Thunderbolt, Rezound, and Nexus). I am finding that the upload speed over 3g is unbearably slow ONLY on my Nexus. For instance, at my house, I have full bars (I don't have the dbm but the signal is nearly perfect), I can pull 2Mbps down consistently, but the upload speed always measures around 50Kbps. I was wondering if anyone else has experience this, and, if so, if you were able to find a resolution.
For your further information, I have tried 4.0.2 stock, 4.0.4 stock, and 4.0.4 AOKP along with a couple of the hybrid radio combinations listed in the development sticky. Nothing seems to help. I have owned 2 Gnex and they have both done the same thing. The display unit at the VZW store also shows this hugely asymmetric connection.
And just so someone doesn't say, the speedtest.net app just isn't measuring correctly, the issue is very obvious when sending an MMS or email with attachment. They will either take hours to go through, or never go at all.
Any help you can offer would be much appreciated!
Edit: Just opened a trouble ticket with Verizon. We'll see if that gets me anywhere.
Verizon's answer
So Verizon said there is no problem, it must be the device even though I verified the problem on 3 separate phones (only nexus's) and sim cards. So I sold my nexus. Good luck if you have this issue. Verizon won't help.
Maybe it's just a bad tower for uploading..
Do you not have wifi?

[Q] Phone only reboots with little or no reception

Hi I've been using this lg p930 first with AT&T and now I've unlocked it and use it with a straight talk SIM card for t-mobile (I was sent a t-mobile sim by straight talk even though I told them my phone is unlocked AT&T).
I'm aware of the issues people are having with rebooting and freezing and am glad to say I don't experience this at all when I'm at home. However I usually visit my sister on the weekends and this phone does nothing but reboot. At my own home, I have great reception, no wifi, and no rebooting. Here at my sisters apt there is virtually no reception except by the side of the apt facing the street where the window is.. There is wifi here. And my phone reboots. It's rebooting as I type this post.
I thought it might be that whenever the phone has disconnected from the carrier and is trying to pick up a signal to reconnect, the phone will reboot..? Since my phone works fine at home I was wondering if anyone had a simpler suggestion besides rooting and installing a custom rom to fix the rebooting which only occurs at my sister's apt? Like a temporary fix? Since the phone works fine any other time I want to avoid any heavy changes.
Thank you... And if anything I suppose ill just deal with the damn reboots when I visit the fam.. Or be the reason why I shouldn't come over to my sisters crappy apt every weekend. :victory::laugh::victory:

What baseband are you on? do you get 3G with t-mobile?
heres what my phone tells me..
android version: 2.3.5
baseband version: P930-MDM9200B-V10j-FEB-26-2012-XX 1
kernel version: 2.6.35.11
build number: GRJ90
software version: LG-P930-V10j-FEB-26-2012
i dont know about my 3g...my carrier is straight talk. i guess they piggy back on t-mobile networks. currently they reduced my data speed to slower than dirt because i play some games on my phone which use a launcher to connect to facebook to play the game and somehow this is too much for their network to handle. they say when i refill with a new service card, my speeds should return to normal unless they monitor excessive use again which they will then lower my data speeds again until the next time i refill. i really couldnt tell you if im 3g or 4g.. right now everything on my phone connects at the speed of dirt.
well, anyway i dont know how to check that. please teach me how and ill tell you..
Why not upgrade to ICS? This may help with reception and stability.
this rebooting only happens when im at my sisters where there is no reception. it doesnt happen whem im at my own apt where reception is good. im not againt upgrading or anything, im sure eventually i will, just wondered if there was a temp fix that wont require a lot of messing with the system.. im usually at my place so if its not broke here then i dont mind leaving it as it is.
I agree with the "don't upgrade unless you need to" sentiment but ICS offers so much more than GB. ICS is also faster and much less laggy based on my personal experience with a Bell P930.
try flashing the V20c baseband. I was getting 1 bar constant, and afterwards I get full now. Other then dead zones. Montana woo hoo

thank you for your helpful suggestions!
