I have searched everywhere for this and cannot find an answer so I'm sorry in advance if I have missed it somewhere. I am just bought a htc desire hd off a friend with the intention of rooting it but didn't realise the volume keys were broken. I have tried to reboot it into recovery via ADB but it gets stuck on the screen with the phone and a red exclamation mark in a triangle. I have read on other posts that this happens when you go into recovery and you press power and volume up.
Obviously I cannot use volume up so is there anyway to get around this or to avoid the screen in the first place? Or is there another way to root I'm missing where I don't need the volume keys? Even if I get into recovery mode I cannot change the options without the volume buttons.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

I would strongly, strongly advise getting your volume keys replaced and/or fixed before attempting to root. You can get very very stuck trying to root without working volume keys.
I actually had this problem. Wanted to use aahk and I couldn't downgrade ruu because my volume up button doesn't work. I ended up pulling off the volume rocker. Then I used a screwdriver to press the button and it luckily worked. If you can do that, that could be something you could do. But be very careful when removing the rocker or you could break it. Mine broke. But I have a otter box so its all good. Also, if you're going to get a recovery, I highly recommend getting a touch recovery like twrp or 4 ext so you don't have to use the volume buttons in recovery.
Thanks for the replied. Only paid £20 for it so not massively bothered it I break it. I've tried to do that with the volume but I don't think it's the rocker thats broken I think it's the part inside and wouldn't know how to replace it! Just thought there may be some way to get around using volume keys altogether haha
Anyone got any other ideas?

check ebay and buy a replacement volume key. They are very cheap and there are videos on youtube describing how to remove and replace it.

It's not actually the key, I've pulled the inside volume chip out (the bit behind the button which gets pressed) and pressed them and it still doesn't change the volume so I think it must be some sort of problem with the chip or the wires. I don't really know what that's called to search for on ebay haha
I am in pretty much the exact same Sh*t at the moment. However I have something even more problematic, I lost the volume rocker ages ago and I am still trying to work out whether the button itself is dead or if I am simply pressing this volume chip incorrectly. :/

If you use the end of a paperclip and try and press where the rocker was you should feel a little click as you press it in meaning it should still work. I do this with one of my Desire HD's.
Thanks for the responce (Umm)

Umm I have tried many things so far and I also find that the volume up button is not pressing. I am not sure if it is pressed in or what but the volume down button does press down (clicks when you push it) but the phone never seems to register it as a button press :/

Sounds like your stuck then. pardon the pun
Well the same as i, but u could quick boot to go to recovery
BTW I have an update on my situation. The - volume button definitely works however I think the + button is dead. However I still can't seem to get the phone in recovery by pressing power and - volume button. All I see is the T-Mobile screen and then HTC logo. Any ideas people?

Strange things happen on a Saturday morning. I found my volume go up randomly without me pressing the rocker and my volume down button was not working. For some reason, I thought this might be a software issue and went ahead to flash a new Energy Rom....but here's where it gets twisted:
Task 29'ed the device...and now, the phone is stuck at the splash screen and I can't get to the bootloader cuz apparently, the volume down button is actually not working. One solution is obviously to check for hardware issues...but I won't be able to do it for a couple of days. I was wondering if there might be a beacon of hope to somehow enter the bootloader without using the volume rocker.

my volume down button broke. I had to get a new phone from assurion.
After heavy use of this 1 year old phone, my power button has like dugged into my phone and it's sort of hard trying to press the power button, so is there anyway to fix this without replacing the phone?

Does anyone know how to get the HTC One X out of Safe Mode? I tried turning off the phone and turning it back on...nothing and also the down button doesn't work at all, maybe a part of the safe mode.
Try running ruu in bootloader

when I get to bootloader only the up volume button works, I can get to my home screen on the phone, it just has that "safe mode" in the lower left hand corner and it wont allow 3rd pty apps to run at all. I downloaded the stock ruu from xda to my laptop. going to give that a shot when i get home. I just thought maybe there was a button combo to fix it.
Have you tried holding the power button for 10 seconds (or however long it is) to simulate a battery pull.
Other than that, maybe try turning on with both volume down + volume up held as it boots up?

this may be your clue. Sounds like a hardware fault with the vol+ button stuck down on boot.
Either that or your battery died while installing something.
Fixed
Pressing and holding the power button until the three lighted buttons at the bottom flaedh solved the issue for me. I also had a good press and release of the volume buttons first but presume it was the hard reset that did it as I'd tried messing with the buttons already.

I hope it is merely the volume key being stuck for some weird reason, fixing it is pretty straightforward: release the cover and carefully detach the screen. The volume buttons along with the power button will fall off. Try replacing them or perhaps turning the volume keys.
If the keys are not the cause you'd better hope you didn't void warranty.

My phone was stuck in Safe Mode because the volume down button was stuck down all the time, if you can get the button out and restart your phone it will go back into normal mode. And yes I know the post is old but maybe someone is still looking for an answer
thanks for the info ignor the nego dude u helped me
Hello people
Not sure if there's a thread already started on this (i apologize if there is!)
I have a HTC Desire, had it for a while now but there's been this problem since i've had it (it was given to me for free), whenever i power on the device it boots STRAIGHT into hboot/fastboot (i know you'd have to hold the volume 'down' button to enter this usually). This happens without me holding the down button down, so this makes me believe that the down button is... like stuck? The volume button ISN'T pushed down physically so? It must be an error on the board surely? I can get the rom on if i hold down with GREAT pressure on the front keys?
So what i'm asking is what do any of you suggest doing? Is there a way to fix it? My dad also brought a new 'flex' board i think it's called with no success, any other ideas?
Any ideas would i'd be extremely grateful for

No, it acts again, as if the volume is pushed down, but like i say it isn't physically pushed down - thanks for your reply!
You need to disassemble it and see if something is wrong with button itself. It may be that just button disaligned. Also try cleaning it.

Did you solve the button problem? My gf has the same phone, and the exact same problem. The phone is running in safe mod all the time now...

Agreed. Here's a good visual guide to help with the teardown: http://tjworld.net/blog/htc-desire-tear-down
Even after disassembling/cleaning the phone is still in the same condition. Any other ideas?
I want to unlock my bootloader but unable to do because of the broken volume buttons. I am able to go to bootloader by using adb commands.
The volume keys need to be pressed in the last step of unlocking bootloader, as you can see the attached picture. Can anyone please help me in this. Both the volume keys are not working in my case.

Yo, where you able to resolve this !!
It dont work, i had the same problem you have to trigger the volume up, just take a twizer and use any ground from the phone and twizer these buttons lines with the other tweezer end. I have done this many times couse i needed to go in recovery, you better buy a new volume flex for that and repair it. Or you dont have like i did long time , couse the buttonsbare not really needed couse d2w and fluid geastures and volume or any other way to trigger volume to adujst

I fixed the volume flex issue by adding a thin piece of paper behind the flex which produced enough pressure on the volume rocker to work.
