h+ stands for HSPA+, or "3,5G". It is an evolved version of 3G, offering higher speeds. But not close to 4G, of course. See wikipedia for more details: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GSM

Unless you got a carrier-locked CDMA model from the US, AFAIK, you have a international GSM device, only capable of connecting to GSM/UMTS networks, and using any of their data protocols (EDGE, 3G, HSxPA). Any ROM that tells you that you're on 4G, they're lying to you, purely an appearance tweak.

I got my nexus and have a question

Hi. I got my nexus yesterday. I really love it. I am on T-Mobile but the signal jump between 3g and h like crazy. I am aokp and radio xxkk6. Any suggestion
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
I thought 3g and H connection jumps are normal if you move a lot or stay at somewhere with instable 3g signal.
Mine does that all the time.
Oh and u can delete that "COMING SOON" in your signature
The phone is made to go from 3g to h if the data signal is being used then back to 3g when it is not.

This is not a feature of the Galaxy Nexus, but rather the proper way 3G/HSPA+ is supposed to be handled by GSM phones.
Sometimes skins will just leave the "3G" or "4G" symbols up in the status bar, even when the phone is actually switching much more often. The Nexus just shows the actual switching when it happens.

Data keeps switching between 3g and H+

Ever since I flashed my phone with the wicked rom .. my data has been do constantly switching between 3g and h+... I have my network type set to wcdma only and I have a strong signal but it still drops down to 3g
Before when I was on the stock rom it never did that.. I even had my network type set to wcdma preferred ..
Anyone having the same issue ?

That's completely normal. It only shows h when your data is fully active. Its a good thing. The only difference is now your phone is telling you the truth.

Oh is it normal ? I didn't know since on the stock rom it never did that ,always displayed 4g.
But what would it drop to 3g if I have a strong signal always

Yeah dude. T-Mobile does that they call their hspa+ 4G. Technically anything that is not 3g is considered 4G. The reason you are seeing this on your new rom is because the stock tmobile rom will only display you in 2G or E for edge. Or 4G for 3G and HSPA+ otherwise known as 4G. The majority of customer roms will tell you what you are currently on.

Is the 4G toggle different than lte? I am running an AOKP rom and since changing from stock I see h+ and 4g never lte anymore.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
I had that problem, I think it's the cosmetic setting that got screwed. I flashed another ROM and then back to stock to get the LTE icon back on.
- format System
-flash Kyan's ROM (caused it was based off of Rogersbuild or i747M)
- confirmed that it was showing LTE, then I flashed the stock Rom.

Thats because AOKP And other rom are based on AT&T not Bell so you will see 4G vice LTE.
I work for Bell and I have done a good 15 updates since it was released for customers. Still says H+lte. I know wanamlite had the att 4G, looked way cooler but thats the only rom I have tried that has had the 4g so far. the Bell update doesnt say that.
It is all based off of csc
Rogers uses 4g and lte, Telus says h+ and 4g and bell has h+ and lte. All same thing just their idiotic way of differentiating.
Mixing firmwares can produce some interesting results.
Waiting for JKay mod on GT-I9300
telus shows 4g or lte. people always think that im on lte when it says 4g and am 'wowed' by its speed. then i tell them they're actually on 3g.
happened to me for some reason 3g and and 4g are what I get.

I think It's the same thing but I like the way the 4g Icon looks better then the H+ one.

Unlocking Q

If I unlocked my Hercules and used at&t prepaid and flashed a skyrocket radio would I be able to use their data? And also would the data be just as fast?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
Yes I think so might just have to change APN settings
How do you do that?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
I'm not for sure you may not have to. I only know how to change APN on a iPhone. You should be OK with just an unlocked t989 and radio change
I believe you could use it, but it would only be 2g because at&t uses LTE for their high speed networks. The physical radio itself in our Hercules just doesn't support it.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using xda premium
But a att radio should fix that
No, not the software radio. That will give you the 2G signal, but we don't have the actual physical hardware to run full speed on at&t's network. That's part of why the Hercules has a different processor, the one in the international/att sII wouldn't work with tmo's hspa network.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using xda premium
You would be able to use your Hercules on AT&T but if the fast data you're referring to is 4G LTE, then no, you won't get that because the Hercules doesn't have the hardware needed to support it. You would get HSPA+ though.

Couldn't you turn off 4g and just pull 3g and it work that way?

No. You could turn off 4G and get EDGE/2G though.
On Verizon phones you can turn off 4g to only use 3g why would it not be the same

T-Mobile's 3G/4G networks run on the same bands so you can't block something on one band and only let the other thing work. I guess Verizon has different bands for 3G/4G.

I see got cha.. I didn't know
I hope i'm not hijacking here but I have a similar question. I'm in an at&t lte market and was considering using my t989 with at&t via straightalk. Would I be better off to sell my phone and get a "true" at&t phone that does LTE?

If you use Straight Talk, then no matter what phone you use, you won't get LTE so it doesn't matter if you use a T989 or an AT&T phone.

[Q] Question for rooted galaxy s4 users

People who have galaxy s4 rooted with tmobile do you still get 4g lte or 3g?
Rooting doesnt affect your radio bands at all.
i only ask because I had a htc sensation before my galaxy s4 and when i rooted and had miui rom it only got 3g never got 4g
that was muiu's fault that didn't support anything better than 3G.

Actually, if the Sensation is anything like the Evo 3D code wise, 4G has something to do with Sense... no sense = no 4G.

devs have to support it... when I had the HTC evo, anything other than sense wouldn't let you have 4G after months later devs cooked it into CM. MIUI was an Asian rom that didn't support the 4g. well regardless he's not asking about roms he's asking about rooting. Rooting won't make you lose your 4g/lte Op.

I have an unlocked rooted T-Mobile S4. I have used it on a bunch of different networks so far. My home/work market is a reframed 1900mhz market and it works well there. I was traveling through Phoenix airport and got a very good 4g LTE connection there. I was in Europe last week (UK) and used it all week on EE's HSPA+ network without an issue.
I get 4G Lte.
