"Samsung's Galaxy S II Android 2.3 smartphone was launched at MWC 2011. The Galaxy S II is available in both NFC and non-NFC versions, and most are the non-NFC version."

Not to sound rude, but you have NFC and Bluetooth enabled right?

That's the international version. The T-Mobile S2 has NFC. Also the person right above me may be right. Do you have it enabled?
Its in Settings > Under Wireless & Networks click More > Make sure NFC is checked and Android Beam is enabled

What rom are you on? And all that..?
Little more info if you want people to help you.
I noticed my nfc doesn't seem to work on the new cm10.1 and AOKP 4.2.2 roms bit works fine on many others..

Are you using an after market battery? not all batteries are NFC capable.

If you are using the factory battery you should be fine.
I believe the NFC antenna is part of the battery, I have three batteries and two nfc works and with one it does not. So I am pretty sure that is correct, but if you have a factory battery that should not be your problem.
I have used CM 10.0 and I am currently on SlimBean nfc worked on both for me.

I believe most models (US) shipped with NFC, but most carriers (in the US at least) disabled it.

I believe T-Mobile was the only US carrier not to disable NFC. Although it should be enabled AFAIK with ICS updates for other carriers if the hardware is present.
Ok wait wait, let me clarify.
i9100 = NO
i9100P = YES (it's an i9100 exactly, but with NFC. ROMs for i9100 will work, but need to be modified to show NFC settings, otherwise no NFC options will show)
i9100G = NO, it's completely different from the i9100 hardware (TI-OMAP instead of Exynos). ROMs from i9100/P don't work.
T989 (T-Mobile GS2) = YES, but it's completely different from the i9100 hardware (Snapdragon S3 instead of Exynos). ROMs from i9100/P don't work.
i777 (AT&T GS2) = YES* , stock ROMs disable it. ROMs from i9100 work because they're the same phone (it's really an i9100P because it has NFC) but you need to modify button layout or the buttons won't work in the ROM.
D710 (Sprint GS2) = NO
thank u guys, i'll buy european i9100...
afaik, european S II GT-I9100P comes with NFC ... so if you want a european NFC version, you could try to find a GT-I9100P (e.g orange in France and TIM in Italy ).
...not sure which roms will work ....perhaps the same as on the GT-I9100T ...

Hmm, I think there is a nfc version for Europe -> the P version AND an Australian version with nfc- > the T version.... :what:
And Btw. AFAIK they changed the naming of the i9100G to i9100 in April/mai... Because nobody wanted a I9100G.... What a mess!

So my question to you is if stock roms disable NFC on the i777 then why did my box say that it is NFC equipped and I was able to use it stock?
On my Australian T model it is not supported(doesnt work) but my P model is and (i9100)my standard one has no nfc

my sgh-i777 has no indication of NFC on the box and was unusable stock. It does say "Near Field Communication" on the battery but I was only allowed to read some tags with a custom rom a while back. I'm on AOKP now and haven't tried anything with NFC as I gave up on it a while ago.

The i777 is really an i9100P (European I9100 with NFC). So yes it should fully work on a ROM that supports it.

My sgh-i777 obviously came with it but turned off from carrier att. But I've been using nfc since gingerbread a dev entropy got it working back on 2.3.4 release from att. However the problem we do have is the lack of secure element which is why we can't use Google wallet for instance. Theirs been alot of debate over the secure element factor but besides that its fully functional.

There's no debate; it needs to be there or Wallet won't work. End of discussion. Any other NFC stuff should work.

Great info.
My brother just got the Nexus 7 and I was able to Beam a site I was browsing on chrome to him (I'm running AOKP btw). So it does work
But he tried to beam me a picture and it said the other device doesn't support receiving large files via beam ?
So now I know that my nfc works, what cool things can I do?

Pretty much anything else that newer NFC phones can do, except Google Wallet because that requires a separate chip called a Secure Element. NFC itself is a very slow, weak protocol. You can beam text easily, which is probably what happens when you beam something like a URL. But beaming a picture would take a looooot of time and power. So I think what happens is the NFC chip initiates a Wifi-Direct (Wifi-to-Wifi) or Bluetooth transfer.
Try buying Samsung Tectiles and using the app to trigger actions with NFC.

Defective NFC?

Tried using NFC for first time ever between my GNex and Nexus 7 and nothing would transmit. I originally had the VZW Extended battery in, but put in the original to see if that was the cause. Nothing, still no transmission. Is is possible the NFC is defective? Seems odd since it's in the battery.
I am running franco kernel 220 384mhz and Vicious Jelly Bean v1.1 for what it's worth. I really wanna see NFC in action, is it the kernel?
Is NFC enabled on both devices?
Yeah, Android Beam as well
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
For me beaming Images from Galaxy Nexus to Nexus S works, but not the other way round.
And beaming videos didn't work at all, i believe.
This is with stock Jelly Bean 4.1.1 on each device. I don't think this is a hardware problem.
Yeah it's hard for me to tell if it's possibly always been defective since I've literally never tried using NFC until I tried messing with it with my Nexus 7 out of boredom, so not sure if it was cool on 4.0 and 4.1 is the problem or what. :\
Beaming "big" files (other than YT links or so) requires Bluetooth to be enabled on both devices. NFC makes the pairing process easy but the transfer itself is handled by Bluetooth...
It's quite unlikely that it is broken in both batteries. Have you tried a different ROM or wiping? If it's still happening, it's more likely that it is broken on the Nexus 7 than the Gnex
Is there a way to test the Nexus 7 nfc?

Looks like device placement was the problem, it's working now.

The NFC isn't in the battery, only the antenna... the chip is internal

Hows Dev support for the s3?

I'll probably end up upgrading around December but, I've been curious as to what the current state of dev support is for the s3.
I've heard there are a number of problems with getting the NFC to work and I was wondering if this is local to the S3 or if it applied to all phones with NFC.
It doesn't apply to the galaxy nexus.

Can't speak for anyone else, but NFC works fine here (running CM10). Maybe it's another model of S3 that's having issues?

I'm not entirely sure which is actually why I felt the need to ask.
The S3 is a pretty nice piece of kit that I may pick up in Decemberish.. but, I'd like to make sure it can mirror my captivates longevity in terms of dev support.
Its a flagship Samsung phone. Of course there will be prolonged dev support.

The battery adds the nfc-antenna. Not the nfc-chip. GS2 with nfc chip in 6 countries, as far as I know. Not in Brasil.
At www.nfc-phones.org more info.
What's the model # of your sgs2? For instance I have NFC and the i-9100p does as well. There are some other variants of the i-9100 that are basically p versions. Do you have any RFID or NFC passport etc. That you could try and use it to read some info off it. Obviously it won't give you vital info off a credit card w/NFC or what not but you will pick up some information. And yes you need the NFC battery, first place you should look is on the battery it will say NFC towards the top.

[Q] Is there a way to enable NFC on Grand Duos?

Hi Folks,
I saw a couple weeks a battery replacement for Grand Duos with the NFC enable. I'm a noob in terms about the tecnology, so I'm asking if with this battery we can somehow enable the NFC in the firmware???
Thanks
I guess it's not possible

NFC is a hardware feature. I9082 doesn't have the hardware to enable NFC communication. It has nothing to do with the battery.

Indianversion of grand dosent have support for nfc however samsung decided to include it in korean versione
NFC hardware just pairs with a compatible NFC device but the data is send via Wifi Direct only.
NFC hardware just pairs with both devices nothing else guys ... it sends the data via wifi direct.
Similar app is available on play store name "Fast File Transfer" it does the same ... sends any videos, games or music via wifi direct.
But one thing which I like about NFC is that it bypasses the authentication or pass key step to connect with devices ... just touching two nfc devices together connects them automatically.
But if one use NFC enebled speakers or smart tags then only its usefull ... other than that one can use fast file transfer app which does the same thing as NFC does while sending any data.
