Everytime i try to copy anything over to my phone from my laptop i get an odd message saying "the device has either stopped responding or has been unplugged." Ive tried restarting my comp, restarting my phone, i switched USB cords, i switched the USB outlet i was plugged into, i tried unchecking and rechecking USB debugging, reinstalling the LG drivers. i tried everything. Please someone help...

The message your getting has me baffled, but usually it's the cord. It still could, be even though you tried a different one. Another option might be to try different lg drivers.

I used 3 different cords. Amd i swapped out the drivers too. I dunno what to do. I'm so pissed.

There's 3 different version drivers here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35520144. Maybe you've tried them all I don't know. If you have adb installed... does it recognize your phone?
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda premium
Yup, recognizes my phone fine. I was able to root and unlock just fine. And i can copy from phone to comp but not comp to phone... so weird.
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda premium
Very weird. When you plug in the USB cord, have you tried both media and camera options? In that dropdown menu...I can't remember what they're called.
I just remembered, I did have a similar issue, but I was running Linux.

You say adb works just use adb push. It would be adb push (file on your computer) /sdcard (note: do not use parenthesis when running the command)
P.S if it says sdcard is a directory use /sdcard/download.

this is plaguing me as well. tried several different cords/drivers - I just got this phone and have not been able to mount it.. its a replacement phone. It does not mount in recovery, either (it hangs on 'updating partition details') and it fails when I try to Partition it

OK, basic troubleshooting:
1) Does it charge when you plug in power? (If so the port should be working on the phone.)
2) Does it show anything at all when you plug into the PC?
3) Did you check Device Manager and notice if any devices are disabled or showing as unknown?
1 basic question: what are you running (Stock, custom rom)?

It does charge on the computer and ive tried device manager however t still doesnt show. Im running aokp build 37 with kobridges battery tweaks

Mb you should start fresh with SFHUB's EL29 w/ root. Probably an issue with AOKP. Or if you don't want to do all that maybe you can try a different kernel and see if that works.
Thats a good idea, but how would you go about doing that without using a pc? I cant get my computer to recognize the phone in download mode

So I plug my phone into my computer and it doesn't realize it's connected. It charges, but I can't access the storage from my computer. The USB debugging doesn't even come up anymore.
I've tried 2different computers and 3 different USB cables. Tried multipled ROMs and stock. Reinstalled drivers. Restarted PC. No go. It was working fine up until yesterday.
I'm probably going to get it exchanged since it's still within the return window, but does anyone have any ideas?
Download the driver's again worked for me

Yeah, I tried that also. No go. Thanks.
I'm having the same problem. It just stopped working today after I restored from a Nandroid backup. I was on the AOKP rom, then restored back to the stock rom. I'm going to try to re-install the drivers.
I got mine working. Removed and re-installed the Samsung drivers. I then restarted the phone with it attached to my PC and it recognized it after that. I also reformatted the cache storage in "Mounts & Storage" in CWM. That didn't do anything initially but could have helped, I'm not sure.
This happens to me occasionally. Pulling the battery seems to fix it for me.
Did you by chance use QPSt to backup your IMEI? If so you need to set usb settings back to MTP

Awesome glad I could help. And between you and I, I did the same thing and took a bit to realize. Lol. Maybe the OP did same thing. Will see
Sent from my SGH-I747M using xda app-developers app
Going back to MTP wasn't enough, I had to pull the battery, even after rebooting the phone. Had been prepping to backup my IMEI #, so that was obvious the root cause though.
Battery pull worked. Thanks guys

mine was doing that as well and all I did was install an updated version of Kies and now it works.
I'm on windows 7, 32bit, installed AT&T Samsung drivers.. Tried multiple USB cables that recognize my other devices.. But I can't for the life of me get this I747 to register as a portable device. Please help! Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Still no dice. I followed the toolkit to the T, reinstalled the drivers a couple of times too for good measure, and my phone still never registered. This is driving me nuts! My friends phone is popping right up when she connects to the PC but not mine.
Try the assistance chat on Samsung site since you are stock they can help you better with that. It is starting to look like a hardware issue.

Try this. (use the usb cable that came with S3)
Worked for me on my Win7 32bit.
Had similar issues on XP. Different fix for XP.
same issue, although my phone connects to 32-bit version of win 7 at work and not at home 64 bit win 7.... just charges the phone, prompt NEVER comes up
I never get mine to show up on the first try. I usually have to plug it out and back in a few times for it to work. But when i got it working, it only works on the same usb port.
Another thing i did at first to get it to recognize the phone was to use the desk to app.
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
I kept toying around with this problem. My laptop has winxp. It would beep when I put the cable in, but I was always disappointed by no connection. Then my phone would tell me to try and download Kies. Did not want to do that. But I did. Connection could still not be made.
I stumbled onto a fix. Dunno if it will work for anyone else. I was juggling about 2 dozen things at the time and might have missed a critical step.
I plugged in a USB OTG cable with an 8gb flash drive. The phone recognized it! Even displayed a cute little message in the status bar that USB was connected (instead of MTP). This all lasted a whole 2.7 seconds after hours of searching for solutions.
I tried connecting it to my computer for another try, and I am proud to report that is is working flawlessly for now!!
I have had the same issue off and on. Found somewhere this past week a suggestion to pull the battery in order to cause a hard reboot. It worked. Plan on trying it whenever it happens again.
I recently got a used T-Mobile S 2 and just tried to root it. The computer will not see the phone when I hook it up to the USB. I've tried the Odin method and it won't even register it's plugged in. I've installed and reinstalled kies 3 times and I've even tried just installing the drivers by themselves. Is there a way to root the phone without having to use the USB? I'm guessing the USB connector on the phone is bad even though it's charges just fine.

If it charges ur fine, is the device in DL mode? What is the procedure u are using, with this phone the only way to root it is Odin, or maybe adb but I'm not sure, and if u have kies installed on ur pc Odin won't see the phone I repeat remove kies, once ur rooted u will never use it again anyway kies interferes with Odin, make sure u have the OEM USB cord too...

I'm using the volume up+down with the power button to access the download screen with Odin and it never reads that the phone is plugged in. I've uninstalled Kies and still doesn't work. Now I've noticed that I can only go into the e3 recovery mode.

So the phone accesses doenlode mode? Try holding just the vol+vol- buttons and plugging it in to the USB while connected to PC, that should put u in DL mode, if not it might be ur port, have u tried all other ports and different usb wires? Sorry if my questions are trivial but I need all the info if I'm going to help

Yeah I've tried 3 different cables and 2 different computers. I'm leaning towards the USB Jack. I took the phone apart and found corrosion on the board towards the bottom so it looks like the phone has some water damage.

Thats most likely ur culprit then, it may be just corroded enough to not hit the right pins to push data through odin, u could try to replace the USB com, u can get one for around 30bucks online and its an easy fix if u have a lil knowledge, the bad news is without it rooting is next to impossible ...

I mean if u don't want to try the fix u could try rooting it through wireless adb but that's a long shot at best, just started using wireless adb an not even sure if its possible to root it like that but u could look into it...

I'm on VectuS V4. Earlier today I was backing up my SD card in preparation for putting CM10.2 on my phone, and halfway through transferring stuff to my computer, the phone suddenly stopped recognizing the USB connection.
It's charging, but it's acting as if the phone is connected to a charger rather than a computer. The computer doesn't recognize that the phone is attached at all.
I've tried deactivating USB debugging, switching fast charge on and off using Trickster MOD, and everything else I can think of. It does the same if plugged into other computers, so it's definitely an issue with the phone.
If anyone has any suggestions for this, PLEASE help! I'm at my wit's end!

This might be a long shot, but a possibility.
What TWRP are you using? If it's not 2.5.0.0 give that one a shot. The newer ones have similar issues.

Now that you mention it, I did just update to the latest. But this begs the question: how do I revert back to 2.5.0.0? I've downloaded the file, but all the directions I could find require using ADB, which I can't since the USB isn't recognized....
Edit: Never mind. I figured it out.

That's weird in itself. TWRP should flash it regardless.
I know you were trying to back up your SD, but I'm almost thinking you're gonna need to use LGNPST. Depending how you do it, you might lose your sd though.
