For some reason I keep getting a warning from watchdog lite that Android Media process is using 20.3% cpu and Android keyboard is using 20% cpu. Please help.
Bump
This is generally caused by media becoming corrupted. Browse through any photos or videos you have and see if anything appears that way. Might be pixelated or picture may be all black. Delete any corrupted pictures and see if that corrects the problem.
Also, if possible post a logcat. This well help better to determine the cause of the keyboard as well as if the above doesn't correct the first part of your problem.

I have deleted all photos in the gallery yet it still uses a lot of CPU. How do you post a logcat?
As far as the media problem try this:
1. Go to Settings > Apps > All
2. Locate and select "Media Storage"
3. Select Force Close
4. Select Clear Data
5. Repeat Steps 1-4 for the app: Android Keyboard (AOSP)
6. Reboot your phone
Note: The above clears settings for the keyboard. If you have modified these settings, go back to Settings > Language and Input to re-modify those settings back to how you like after performing the above steps.
You'll notice some high CPU for these processes while they rebuild their databases, but after a while you should see them go down to normal usage.
What this does is clears the database for your media. When Media Storage encounters something corrupt it tries to endlessly rebuild the database. Since you cleared your media, let it rebuild the database from scratch and hopefully it won't encounter any issues.
how to install and save logcats:
---------------------------------
Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.jtb.alogcat&feature=nav_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDNd
Installing this is a little tricky. You will need a root explorer or you won't be able to see logs. Steps below:
1. Install from play store
2. Open root explorer and browse to your system root (not ur SD card, but actual system root.)
3.) go to /data/app and cut org.jtb.alogcat-1.apk
4.) go back to system root and now browse to: /system/app
5.) paste the file.
6.) set permissions to 0644 (-rw-r--r--)
7.) restart your phone.
Note: make sure you move or cut the file so that you don't have duplicate apps. If you do happen to copy, go back to /data/app after you have it copied and delete the original.
This app has to be a system app to function in 4.2.x android systems. The above process converts it to a system app.
Open alogcat from your appdrawer and press menu.
Select save. should save to your internal storage under alogcat/whateveryourlognameis.txt
Upload your logcat here and I'll review it.

any app installed in your device is in the all section unless you uninstalled something..
You may have disabled it in error. Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the "all" list and if its there, click on it and select enable. (also clear cache and data) and reboot the device.

No. The problem is probably that you have some files your media scanner doesn't like and it hangs. Usually a format fixes this, unless you can find the file causing the issue.
I'm sure bwolf is probably correct but I've used rescan media when using certain ROMs ported from Verizon and it worked for me. It stops the media scanner and quickly scans. I don't believe I have any bad files so it may be a different problem altogether but maybe it is worth a try. I can't remember but I think its free.

Wasn't suggesting not to try it. Actually, the OP should definitely give it a try before formatting.
Sorry bwolf didn't mean to imply anything. Actually a full wipe of the internal SD cleared up other issues I've had with some ports and could've helped with the media scanner too but I never checked that part specifically.. If you decide to try a wipe, OP, don't forget to back up all your pics and vids if they are on internal SD and also copy any nandroid backups you want and titanium back up folder to external SD. You can then restore apps using TB from there. Just change folder location in prefrences. If you restore a nandroid backup it could also restore any issues.

Did not work. I pressed "Disable media scanner" and 3 minutes after that watchdog lite warns me that android media process is hogging CPU.
Remove all files from your sd card and then format it. It's also completely normal for media scanner service to run anytime you use it, especially during initial boot. I always stop the process after a boot, otherwise it'll run for 5-10 minutes nonstop and keep my cpu at max. It is suppose to stop eventually though.

Has any one got a solution to why the android market will let you download some apps but not others. This problem only happens with certain apps.
Contacted one of the app developers, and he thinks there may be a problem with my data partition.

+1 for this but if not can you list some example apps so we can see if it's just you (B. East) or not?
The apps i seem to have a problem with are, Cordy the game, storage analyzer, and gun brothers game. I some times have problems with updating from the market. I have to un-install some apps then download them again to update. this happens when the app has been moved to the sd card, but not with all the apps that I have moved to the sd card

Not all apps like being on the SD Card. Do all your apps specifically say they have been updated to allow them to be moved to sd card?
You may have to move them to phone if they continue to cause issues (and to be honest, with a 1GB internal memory, putting apps onto a slow sd card really isn't worth doing.

Did you try this?
If all of the above fails to work you will probably have to factory reset the phone.
I tend to download using wifi, going to try downloading over 3g and see if that makes any difference, if not, will do a factory reset. thanks for the help though.
Before you do that you still haven't said if you cleared the market cache. Did you?
yes, i done that, tried to download again and got a message, "could not install on USB storage or sd card". First time I have seen that message.
Is this whilst trying to update an app or download a new one?
If to update then move the app to the phone first.
this is trying to download a new app.
Had a quick Google and found something to try.
mount the phone so you can access the sdcard.
Set to show hidden files
Go to folder .android_secure
Delete a file in there smdl2tmp1.asec
Then try again.
thanks, I will give it a go. can I use a file explorer to do this, because am not sure how you mount the phone, I am quite new to android, use to use winmo mobiles
you can yes, my favourites are Astro, Linda and ES.
I had a look in android_secure, made sure all hidden files would be visible, and could not find any files at all. checked to make sure that the hidden file visible setting in the file explorer was switched to the correct setting, and could not see any files at all.
Have I lost some files? if i have i have no idea how. do I need to do a factory reset?

Damn. When I found that possible solution I noticed that as many people said they did have it as said they didn't. I was hoping you would be lucky.
In this case the same file (apparently this is a known bug and has been marked for next version fix) is being stored in the system directory of the phone and without root you can't get access to it.
I'm afraid the only way to clear it (without root) is a factory reset, sorry.
thanks for your help, I will factory reset and see what happens.
Okay so I tried to post in Urban Inception thread but since I only lurk and flash I can't LOL
so here's the deal. I have the latest purple recovery, EF02 and EF02 modem, I flashed urban, and then flashed his add on
I cannot uninstall preloaded apps. This is my first gingerbread so I don't know if there are drastic differences, but I typically use root explorer and move the apps in question to a different folder on my SD card to back up, or just delete. simple as that.
so I did this to some of the add ons/rom apps, and they stay in the app drawer, and market, installed apps. but are not in system/app or data/app....I did even look in data/data thinking maybe it doesn't clean up after itself but even after deleting left overs its still shows
any suggestions?
Is there any way to lift the block on my account so I can post in Dev forum. I'm not a Dev wiz but I've been testing Rom/kernels since my moment on SDX and had switched over here since I got my Epic, Gtab (sweet!) and daughters intercept because there is better community support.I might ooooops with a duh question here and there but I typically have some common sense about posting "How do I turn on my phone????" in the Dev forum
thanks in advance

the apps should be in /system/app/ or /data/app/ and you should be able to remove them with root explorer just remember to remount writable before you go to move/erase one of them.
and to post in the development section i believe you need atleast 10 posts
thanks I did do that actually, it's usually the first thing I do, like I wrote above. I either move them (take them out of system/app or data/app) to make a back up at the same time (before there were so many flashable restore zips lol....or just straight up delete them
I did do that and they still show in app drawer, installed apps and market, they show with that generic icon, they do not show in system app....they are executable and don't update from market with you try but show up none the less....I was assuming it was rom specific, which is why i wanted to post there.
I don't know if it was something written into the add on pack offer by the rom developer (compkid?)
but thank you for responding, oh and yes i was mounted R/W it wouldn't have deleted from system otherwise...werid there's a trace left???? grrrrrrr just driving me nuts

I have noticed that I have had to delete the apps from system/apps folder and data/data folders. Try looking that folder as well and see if the apps are showing in there.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
yes I did delete from both. I did notice also that some were located in both
so when i look at settings>applications> manage, they are still listed, as com.....etc
and grayed out, and sd symbol...when i click on them, all options (uninstall, clear data, force stop) are blacked out
I looked on my sd card and they are not in .secure, android/data etc
I ran the terminal and ls'ed /mnt/asec and they are not there either
so here's only thing i can think of: when I ls -l system/app all the system apps have rw-r--r--
i can write to it, ie copy and paste via rootexplore but is it not letting me execute install???
so should i chmod...only thing is I can't chmod system/app recursively??? keeps saying bad mode like it's not recognizing "-R"
maybe I'm off and the permission have nothing to do with it
thanks for the suggestions so far, if anyone else has an idea or knows about the permissions and whether that's what's going on let me know
or where those are hiding, it says sd in the app list but i couldn't find it anywhere and I didn't notice any sdext partition
so got it????
I went back to stock, fresh clean odin, odined purple CWM, flashed Kernelplus EF02, 3x wipe, flashed urban again, this time I DID NOT do the add on and it's been fine, doing nothing diff than usual and when i delete an app from system or data, it's gone from app list, market,
so I don't know what's going on with that compkid addon zip but the only thing i did different this time was not flash that and everything is behaving normally
If you make changes to the system, clearing the dalvic cache and fixing permissions should help clear the remnants of removed apps.

I want to make sure I have this right. You deleted the apks from both folders, did a reboot and the apps were still there? Or did you just delete from the two folders and not reboot before checking if they were still there?

Sometimes if u reboot the go away also.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
oh trust me i rebooted...they were not in the folders (system, or data), but still in the app list (settings, applications, manage apps) and market and appbrain still tried to update
in manage applications it showed them as greyed out, and when i clicked on that all options (clear data, uninstall, froce stop etc) were blacked out and unclickable
this time around i did all things the same (ef02 from odin, flash CWM purple, su.zip, 3x data wipe UI ROM) except installing that add on package of extra apps and I no problem deleting anything from system after installing urban inception Rom...added a theme and still no problem modifying
weird huh, I haven't opened the zip, and to be honest I can follow it but I'm not a dev so i wouldn't necessarily recognize anything
Ok, compkid is big on his icons and themes. Check these three spots with Root Explorer or something like it: system/app, data/app, and data/data folders. The third was the last spot I found some things left to delete. I think that should take care of any leftover files that are keeping them from disappearing but in the OP Compkid does suggest using 7zip to delete unwanted apps before flashing the folder. Hope that may help

any idea why those grayed out icons would have a tiny sd (sd card im assuming) in corner...they were the ones that came with the addon, not user installed. You have got me there. I haven't run across that before. Did you possibly move apps to SD or is that an indicator of such since they are saved to SD? Not sure on that one..just some possibilities. Maybe someone else has some ideas???
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
well i didn't move those over for sure, it was es file explorer, twitter (maybe), facebook (maybe), samsung app store (another maybe) i was looking at so many things in half a day, having not been on xda in awhile, catching up on all the gingerbread leak stuff and new CWM and trying to make sure i read through everything before playing that i can't remember all of the apps exactly (one smack for not writing it down), but i remember specifically one was es file explorer
i've never seen that either, with the green/white square icon, and all the menus blacked out when i click it....never seen that ...haha I'd love it if someone knew so i wouldn't have to sit here pretending I'm not still annoyed in the back of my mind, wonder if i could ever find happy gilmore's "happy place" instead of little green and white icons
So if you long press on those Android boxes that used to be apps and hold them over the trash can you can't uninstall them? I use Zeam Launcher and that's an option on there. What launcher are you using? It sounds like you are close to where you want to be now...
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
i can delete them off the desktop fine, but they are still in the system someplace...the app manager still shows them there...those icons show in drawer, in app list and in market update however the update was unsuccessful...the app manager shows them in the list when i click on them, you can't do anything, every option (uninstall, clear data, move, force stop) is blacked out and not clickable
sure i can delete the icon but it's still tucked away somehow,
also like i said earlier, something else was buggy where i couldn't drop apps, in the system/app folder to install (YES I clicked R/W)....i couldn't re install via rootexplorer even the ones that came with add on....i've used many roms since i got my moment and 2.1 came out and then began my flashing addiction and i've always been able to click and install, it might prompt me that it's already install do i want to proceed, but would install over the other and complete successfully....every time it said install unsuccessful.

There's various steps in various posts in that thread, which did you try?
I know either ROM Manager and/or ClockworkMOD Recovery had a .nomedia issue in the past so, make sure both are updated if you use them (or uninstall them if you don't). Additionally, most ROMs have a "rescan media" function (no clue where it is in JB but, it was in Dev Tools in GB).

I just uninstalled Rom Manager but it is still on my phone (it was part of the ROM that I installed).
I also tried to re-update with no luck.
Also noteworthy, when I take a new picture it shows in the gallery. When I use file explorer to browse to the location the new image is stored I can verify that it is in the same folder as all of the other pics that for some reason are not showing up.
I am trying the suggestions here now

There is no .noimage file in the root of my phone. I then cleared cache and dalvik / fix permissions. I have forced gallery closed and cleared all data both in gallery and in media storage, reboot the phone.
No luck yet.
Your ROM is CM based, you should have an app called Dev Tools; run that and select Media Scanner and let it run; otherwise try https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.addz.mediascanner

Thank you for this feedback. I have tried both Dev Tools and Media Scanner. It did not have any effect.
Would the quantity of images and videos have an effect? I have a lot? I doubt it but I am running out of ideas. I appreciate any other feedback. Thank you.
Maybe you have some corrupted image or video on your SD card.
Try to backup all your media files on your computer. Then erase all media files on SD card and add only one picture. Check if the gallery is working. If this picture is there, then you have to find which file is causing the issue.
Add all media files to SD card in some small steps. For example if you have 1000 images, add only first 100 of them. Check if the gallery is working. If it’s working, add next 100 images. If the gallery stops working, remove last 100 images and add only 50. And so on, you get the idea. This way you can identify the corrupted file(s).
PS: Maybe you are wondering why I hit your ”thanks” button That was only a mistake
So I removed all pics and vids and a funny thing happened. It picked up pics in two folders within the DCIM folder. I tried adding a hundred pics back to the camera folder and nothing. I deleted all but a video and nothing. I will test more when my son goes to bed. So weird.

Hi,
I'm using CM10a3 by arco... I did the internal/external memory swapping and it worked.
The problem now is that many apps I had installed do not work anymore!
Apollo crashed - can't open it anymore! - while others say that they are not installed!
How can I repair them?
I tried copying all my folders from my internal memory to the sdcard (after the swap), but I still face the problems mentioned above!
Of course they dont work. Because you didnt move them. So now you have to reinstall them again

They were not installed installed in the sdcard!
And also copying them to the sdcard does not solve the problem as I wrote before...
So what do I have to copy exactly and from where to where?
Can I go back maybe by undoing the swap? Would it work?

Best to swap immediately after flashing rom..try to clear data and reboot..or better to reflash and swap again. Thats d 1st thing i do. After flashing i boot up, open play store and only download root browser lite before swapping and reboot. Den ony install apps

Best to swap immediately after flashing rom..try to clear data and reboot..or better to reflash and swap again. Thats d 1st thing i do. After flashing i boot up, open play store and only download root browser lite before swapping and reboot. Den ony install apps

I mean if u can reflash cm10 it would be better..less chance of bugs..start over. So your process should be..
Wipe data and cache
Flash cm10
Flash Gaaps
Reboot
Then after setting up phone, download any root file browser. I personally dont like d cm10 file manager.
Do the swap. Change 0>1, 1>0
Then REBOOT
And you're done. Can install ur other apps/backups.

OK, tx for your piece of advice, but I don't want to flash everything from scratch.
I swapped int/ext memory back and now everything works again, of course not the swap anyway...
What's the process of swapping in a not-pristine environment (i.e. with many apps installed)?
Tx.

No worries
I haven't tried non-pristine flashing b4 but this should work (its vy similar to the above):
I am not responsible for any mishaps *MAKE NANDROID BACKUP*
Make CWM backup
Wipe data and cache (and dalvik cache, if u want)
Flash cm 10
Flash GAAPS
Reboot
Swap sd card (refer above)
Boot into cwm
Backups and restore > Advance restore > restore data
Wipe cache
Reboot
Pls tell me if it works out=)
If it doesn't jz restore ur backup..
P.s. If some apps FC or have problems after this method, try uninstall and reinstall.

The apks aren't working because when you did the swap you broke the "file paths" (to use windows terminology).... in other words, the phone OS was unable to locate the apk code/file where it expected to find it and the apk force closing/not working was the end result.
Have you undone the swap and found that everything now works?....
If that's the case, then there's no need to reflash. All you need to do is use an app like Gemini app manager to move all your apps to internal phone storage, then apply the swap and finally use Gemini again to move your apps back to your (now swapped) SD card....it's what I do, and it works perfectly every time.....

Correct: undoing the swap, everything works fine again.
You're right: I can confirm that the apps that the OS does not find - after the swapping - are those now on my SDCARD memory (moved via App2SD).
I had forgotten about these, sorry!
So I assume that following your suggestion, these apps will work after the swapping.
Nevertheless, Apollo - which is NOT on my sdcard - after the swapping FC, whereas it works flawlessly in "normal" (not swapped) environment... any idea how to solve that?
Tx a lot.

Yes, doing the move "post swap" with Gemini will work and has worked several times for me....
As for Apollo, I'm afraid I can't help there......I don't use it, I've frozen it in favour of Google Play Music which I downloaded from a link on XDA.
There are some apps which I keep on phone storage no matter what.... apps which I guess are used during start up.....apps like trebuchet, any themes you might have installed (and are using) and any security apps...(anti virus, permissions managers... that sort of thing).....the reason being that the phone performs a media scan at every startup, and the SD card is always the last storage volume to be mounted and scanned, so if there are any apps stored there that are needed during startup, the phone won't be able to access them until the Mount and scan has been performed......(remember I mentioned about file paths in my previous reply.....same principal applies)
Edit...just had a thought about Apollo, there are *some* apps that will only work if installed in phone memory....Gemini app manager is one of them.....maybe Apollo is another?....just a guess...
Edit 2....just had a similar problem with Google play music....to begin with, I had it in phone memory, then I moved it to SD card and suddenly the "widget" for it stopped working and the playlists I'd created were all empty.....moved it back and no issues other than the fact I had to re create the playlists.....

OK... does Google Play Music fully replace Apollo, i.e. can u you use GPM even for your (offline) mp3s?
I thought it was only for listening to music while connected, or for buying new mp3 tracks...

Yes I know, but imho it's not a problem waiting those 10 seconds for the SD to be read... every time you reboot your phone (very rarely in my case, like 2-3 times a week).
My policy anyway is to keep everything on phone storage, if possible, and move things to SD when the space is finishing.

OK, fair enough, but I did not move Apollo to SD card, so even after the swap it should be in the phone memory and runs flawlessly... I don't understand!

Yes, I think for using widgets you need to have apps in phone memory, if I remember correctly.

There's a folder called /mnt/sdcard/android/data
If you swap the SDcards, that folder becomes 'shifted' to /mnt/external-sd/android/data.
Apollo dies.

True. Unless you symlink your apps into SDcard.

Thanks for the info.
So, are you basically saying, there is no way of making Apollo work if you swap your int/sdcard memory?

Swap before you run Apollo for the first time.
If you've run Apollo before, try Clear Data before.

How about putting a .nomedia file in the cache dir?
I have the same problems. the .nomedia way does not solve the problem, it only hides it. there are still so many thumbails, even of pictures I have deleted a while ago. I look for a way that the phone does not create them.
is there already a solutin for this problem?
clean the cache for the album app. or just click on the clear data
maybe get clean master app (no root) and will clean the trash from the phone

I too am having this issue. I'm running all stock 4.4.4 Clearing the cache removes the actual image but then I have to delete the empty thumbnail manually. That said, after a day or two the thumbnails come back. I am at over 100 thumbnails and it's freaking annoying
I've got also this issue.
Found some instructions but actually none were working for me.

Hi all, I had same issue, here are two solutions, both helped to me:
1. using file manager go to folder "cache" which is in videos, music, photos, delete all folders inside, then change the folder name from "cache" to any other in all three places (music, video, photos)... and that's it.
2. because I had other issues not related to the "thumbnails" I decided to proceed "factory reset" in phone settings, then after that using sony pc companoin I did "phone repair"....
Please try - I can't guarantee that it's 100% working, but both solutions helped me... good luck...

Using File Manager, i was unable to locate the Cache folder in any of the folders you listed. (I am under the SD0 folder). Do you mind uploading a screenshot of that folder?
A factory restore didn't fix the issue either.
Hi it's File commander, then go to phone memory then android... Data... Com.sonyericsson.album, com.sonyericsson.music, com.sonyericsoon.movies. Then you will find folder 'files' and 'cache'.thats the one U are looking for. Delete everything inside and change the name. Like I said- it helped to me.

The folder will be recreated, so changing the name is unnecessary. Deleting it just removes old thumbs.
I don't know but in my case it helped for 3 days untill I reloaded full OS because of other issues. I'm not a tech genius...:-B
