[Q] Looking for a guide on porting a rom - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Can anyone point me in the direction of a guide or tutorial or anything telling me how i would go about porting a rom from lets say a i9300 to our phone? I have been around android for a long time and would really like to start doing this but i have no idea where to begin. I know its not the same as creating a custom rom yourself, so i am hoping this would be a good place to start for me.
Thanks!

Hey start searching for custom roms by aokp or cyanogen read abt the reviews and prefer nightlies as it is bug freed ..porting a rom is smooth due to availability of application what u gta do is 1: Search a desired rom..2: root your phone ..3: create a recovery image 4: place the zip file in your sd card (ROm) and boom flash its smooth

[Q] completely new @ this

im completely new @ this android rooting thing............first of all i have a SGS2 from tmobile..... i rooted my device following a video i saw on youtube...in the description said somthing about this site so i went to the market and purchase and app called xda premium....ok so far so good......i dont know what to do with my device....dont know how to install themes( this why i root) the only thing i got to make was the wireless tether.......... other things like games, performance,al that stuff ,i cant make anything i made a clockwork mod or something like that because i thought of it as a mod for my clock LOL im new at this so please can somebody help me out?
lol no. Clockworkmod is not a mod for your clock.
ok, start with this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1332103
it will start you up. Make sure that you follow each step CAREFULLY.
What you want to do with your phone to get you started is this..
- install clockworkmod recovery (This will be your safety net from bad flashing(uploading new roms))
- root your phone.
- start flashing! (WARNING: now, be careful not to flash any rom other than the T-Mobile t989 model or AT&T skyrocket model roms. If you flash any other roms besides these, you will brick your phone (say bye bye! to your phone).
Good Luck!
dude not to be a **** but i wouldnt even do anything until you read up some more on how this rooting and installing custom roms **** works. especially if u thought cwm was a clock mod lmao. its all good tho bro just read up on everything u can and make sure u flash the right roms and mods to your phone. sgh t-989. and if you need any kind of help dont hesitate to pm me even if it is a stupid question. i want to see u try though, u get respect that way

Being rooted does NOT mean you can download free apps, games, etc. there are free apps on the market. We are here to help but not provide free paid apps. This isnt like an iPhone with cydia dude. main purpose of rooting is to customize your phone any way you want. I would also recommend reading the noob guide. Read alot. Donr want this to be an expensive brick for ya.

I just got mine. Came from the SIII. Using the SII temporarily.
I started here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703292
Since you say you just ordered it. I'm assuming it's new from Sprint. It should come with EL29.
The best place to start is here with a fresh device:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7pWjmKCsoc
Files here listed on the video:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101
Then this is for CWM:

Files:

Step by step. Pause if you have to. qbking77 is great for this. He takes your hand and walks you through everything.
Seems like a lot of stuff on the XDA links, but if you watch the video, he'll tell you exactly what to download. Some little things got updated with the files/names, but you should be able to figure it out.
Well welcome to the community just follow the information the users above posted and you will be fine.. The information can be overwhelming but but far from impossible.. Enjoy your device & wish you much luck
Thanks guys! I'm already learning a lot and look forward to learning more. I'll probably stay away from ICS roms until the source stuff is integrated to significantly reduce my chances of bricking.

That's good to know..!.. And do what's best for you.. I was going to go into explaining the ICS.. But honestly if you only feel comfortable flashing GB rom then do that until you read up and learn on everything.. It's plenty of great GB builds out

The new kernel from the source is out. Its in the wiki section under kernels. Its safe for flashing ICS to ICS. They disable the "brick bug" So by all means if you want to try ICS it should be safe to do so. Make sure you follow the dev's instructions.

Ding is right.. And the other day way which was to mobile odin an el26 kernel and wipe from there to flash your ics rom.. But with the new source kernel out its all good... Just was throwing that other info at you
So what would be the method of flashing to an ICS ROM from a GB ROM now with the source kernel?

From my understanding as agats said in the link below. If you are on a GB rom just make sure it has clockwork mod kernel repack or it won't boot. Flash the kernel on there and flash your ics ROM

Just go into CWM wipe data, cashe, and delvic cashe. Then flash rom. Or use calkulin format all zip. It does it for you. I can't find the link atm but if ya use the search button you can find it.

Yes sir, I'll probably end up doing it tomorrow, I just wanted to wait a few days for things to settle down around here, was also waiting to see the final verdict from entropy/sfhub/garwynn etc on the safety of the kernel regarding the emmc issue, I've been busy at work the past few days and haven't had time to try to follow their absurdly technical posts

Seriously, that thread has everything you need.
However if you must - follow the instructions in my signature and download the files to Root you phone.
Once your phone is successfully rooted, install 2nd-init and the boot your custom recovery. Now you can flash you custom ROM (and gapps).
I think people like you should get banned from this forum, is ok to ask for help but not to be spoonfed, its quite messy? I highly doubt you can even make a guide half better than that one its quite basic and simple to do, and if you can't even follow a basic guide leave the defy with its original rom, why? because you will come back QQ about signal problems, battery drops and so on, so better don't waste our time and space on this good forum and leave if you're not willing to search a **** about what you are going to do
thank you

Either download a custom ROM and install in Recovery or
Download a base ROM and change a few things or maybe all things
You have to know the basics of how to make a ROM to make a ROM. I'd search for a thread and start learning how to make a ROM, Good luck!
