[Q&A][UNOFFICIAL] Tiny's CM10.1 Inc builds - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
I decided to create this Q&A thread for my CM10.1 builds. General discussion for the ROM or questions/troubleshooting can go here. Not every issue is necessarily a ROM bug. Actual bug reports with logcats or kmsg or whatever's needed for the bug should still remain in the development thread.
I wanted to try this out to prevent people with less experience or fewer posts feel alienated from not being able to post in the ROM thread. This thread is open for the community to help each other with issues. I've started a short FAQ to prevent questions from being asked repeatedly and also to help everyone out.
FAQ
Q: How do I flash this ROM? Any special steps?
A: If coming from a different ROM, it's recommended to do a factory reset prior to flashing as well as wiping /system.
Q: How do I update from builds? Do I need to wipe?
A: Flash the new build in recovery. If you're using an ext4 no data limit mod be sure to flash it after the ROM before rebooting to prevent any loss of data or missing apps issues.
Q: Do I need to re-flash gapps when I update builds?
A: No you do not as they get backed up and restored by CM provided you don't wipe system before flashing the ROM.
Q: What kernel is included with the ROM?
A: This ROM ships with my latest incredikernel so there's no reason to flash a specific kernel after the ROM unless you want a different kernel/older version of incredikernel.
Q: I got notified in goo manager that a gapps update is available. Is it safe to flash?
A: no. The system partition is too small on the incredible and they won't flash properly. Use my gapps instead from my main ROM thread.
Q: Why does my camera show weird lines and graphic corruption?
A: I'm not 100% sure on the cause but it is most likely driver related. Every JB ROM has this issue. Use a third party camera like Camera ICS for now.
Q: The camera recording is so choppy. Is there anything I can do about it?
A: The performance of the GPU in the Droid Incredible is very limited and Jellybean was never meant to run on this phone. As a result, some of the methods used to get things to work are a bit hacky which can explain the general graphics glitching.
Q: Will there ever be official CM 10.1 nightlies?
A: No, the CM team has stated they won't bring the qsd8k devices to ICS or later which includes devices such as the Nexus One, Droid Incredible, and Evo 4g.
Q: HELPP!!! I lost the advanced reboot menu. What do I do?
A: There has been a change in CM to disable the Advanced Reboot Menu. Fortunately, it can be enabled in developer options. However, it will only be active while the device is unlocked.
Q: I can't adb into my device. What to do?
A: Seems to be a new issue now but once you enable adb network you can get in via adb even over USB.
Q: I get a process system has stopped responding on boot.
A: Select wait and it will go away. This is a known issue but not consistent. It seems to happen more frequently when using a theme chooser theme as the systemui components are swapped out on the fly.
Q: I want to flash the files for offline voice dictation but the mod says I need 34 MB free and I can't seem to free enough space.
A: Users have reporting the following can be removed and replaced with play store replacements. Unfortunately due to the limited partition size of /system (250MB), there's a lot of stripping of system apps needed to make enough room for the offline files. (There should not be any need to do this now due as of the 4/5 build and gapps)
Trebuchet (Nova), Calculator (Calulations) Apollo (in the Play Store), Exchange and email (Aqua Mail), CM File Manager (FX Explorer), and the accessibility features like talk back.
Also there are about 7Mb of ringtones in /system/media/audio/ringtones. I'd recommend keeping only the ones you want.

Nice FAQ so far. Feel free to take a look at my CM7.2 thread, which had a lot of tips or tricks. I had a bunch, and I can't really remember if they'd pertain to CM10.1.

I'd throw in wipe /system as well. That's a common overlooked step, and without it, there's generally a lot of issues.

google play store issues and google framework services
Hello All
For some reason my phone is only letting me use facebook or foursqure with the google services framework frozen, with sd-maid google now will not do voice search ether with the google framework on or off, I have had this problem for the last month and nothing besides turning the google thing off works. Is there anything more I could do? This problem all so causes google play do crash when ever opened or run.
Thanks to any help!

I only flashed once so far, and back on 7.2 for the moment (a few of my apps didn't work) so figure this is a good place for the question.
How do you get Google Now from the lock screen and from the Launcher? Obviously it's fairly easy to get Google Voice Search working (with it reading aloud answers to you) but the actual Cards and stuff that automatically find things for you.

The only way to get Google Now on the lockscreen is to manually add a shortcut to it using CM's built in lockscreen shortcut options. To access it from the launcher you launch the Google Search app.

My advice is a factory reset in recovery. It's most likely from incompatibilities between the system framework and apps and it's data. Did you do the wipe when installing CM10.1?
Keep in mind a data wipe will erase contacts, call logs, text messages. Contacts that are not backed up to gmail will be lost. Games that save data locally will also be lost. It's pretty common sense stuff but just warning you.
I know when I accidentally flashed CM7.2 and even once I flashed CM10.1 again before booting, things were messed up and I couldn't access the play store.

Re: [Q&A][UNOFFICIAL] Tiny's CM10.1 Inc builds (NIGHTLY)
I will try that, I do not remember if I did wipe or not but I did back up my apps and data using my backup root and it restored all the apps and data so could that have been the first problem ?

I always restore user apps and data without issue. If you restore app data for system apps you're going to run into issues, especially when crossing ROM versions.

They shouldn't unless they're large because they just swap out images.

OK thanks, I using Cobalt which I see has been mentioned a few times around here. I wondered with the extra animations and such, it seems to be a rather extensive theme.

Is it generally safe to run the cpu at 1113MHz? I seem to get a smoother experience running it that high but I don't want to overheat it.
Also, I'm using ClockworkMod Recovery 5.0.2.0. non-touch. Am I able to upgrade to the touch version or am I stuck with my current one?

This has been reported in the ROM development page. Any specific apps? YouTube is known to occasionally force close on boot and system can report the process not responding with a wait and ok option.

1113mhz should be safe. It doesn't run at the max 100% of the time anyways.
I haven't messed with the CWM touch builds but if there's an unofficial CWM touch build for the Inc I don't see anything that would prevent it from working.

It is a lot of time just on the settings or browser thanks

Cool. I'll stick with this speed for now.
I switched to the latest TWRP. Seems to work well.

Sporadic indeed. Not getting the youtube error anymore. Rebooted twice.

I'll take your word for that. But im on 2.2 and had 2.1 and on both of them the front cameras worked fine. Maybe camera support in GB for tablets? Idk, I just know my front camera works fine, dont you have an evo you can test and see for yourself?
Edit: I saw your location of Budapest, so ya you probably dont have an EVO, well take my word for it then, it works.

Ok first yes do a nandroid BACKUP before you flash the new MIUI. After you flash it, do not do a nandroid RESTORE (two different things. Im sure you know, just make sure and specify you know )
To get your apps back you have to use titanium backup. But only restore apps and app data, not system data (unless your titanium backup is from an miui rom.). If you would do a nandroid restore after flashing the update. You would cancel out your update and youd be on the miui version you had before you flashed the update. And youd be right back where you started. Also I think the miui rom has its own backup app. Not sure how to use it, but maybe search around for info on that

First, get the paid version of Titanium and the restore will take no time at all. If it isn't available where you are you may be stuck with restoring an app at a time. Also, you will only have to do that once if you flash MIUI. After that you can use the backup options which are integrated into the ROM and backup/restore most apps (occasionally an app that resides on the SD, such as Angry Birds has some challenges restoring, but you could use Titanium basic for just those difficult apps.)
Next, go to MIUI-devs and look at this thread. Read the OP in its entirety. There you will find links to the latest build as well as all of the options separately, including a zip for getting FFC (which unfortunately will cause you to lose some other options, but it comes down to figuring out what is most important to you personally.)
If you still have questions, search MIUI-devs forum and/or ask for help. XDA is great, especially for discussion and some help, but even with Tyzing trying to keep it up to date here, it is still a bit behind on the latest fixes/downloads.

Actually, the latest update (1.5) works on MIUI. They made changes specifically for the ROM.
Open RC, go to "Options" and check "Disable ROM detection". You can see explanation on the "About" tab.

I know this won't necessarily help you, but I'm using 1.2.25, and my front camera works just fine. What hardware version do you have? 004 hardware seems to have problems with AOSP working with the camera.
Also, did you do a complete wipe or did you flash over an older build? If you flashed over a build, try it after a complete wipe (obviously, back up your current setup in case it doesn't work; you don't want to start from scratch for no reason). If you restored any system data, that could also be the problem. When you start from a complete wipe, restore only apps from Titanium. If you want to backup and restore MIUI system data, use the included MIUI Backup (I use it for both system data and apps, and even though it's slow as hell, I haven't had any problems using it).
I hope this post was useful. Good luck.

To get to ffc using video:
Switch from camera to video
Press video quality (the word, "high" or the button on the far left)
Choose "Custom"
NOW, press menu-switch to front.
Once it started force closing, it was near impossible for me to get it to work, but try clearing data via application manager or reinstalling the app.

Why do we need to flash gapps?

Newbie here, Why do i read everywhere that i need to flash gapps if I ever flash my device?
Is gapps Google Apps?
Yes they are apps and framework from Google, like Google sync, Gmail, Maps, Talk... Google asked ROM developers to remove their copyrighted gapps from their ROM so you have to flash it most of the time.
Yes, Gapps is Google Apps, and it includes the Market among other things...
We have to flash it separately because google asked several popular developers to leave google apps out of their roms since it contained proprietary software.
another noob here, just about to flash a custom rom (AKOP to GNex) for the first time.
if i have all apps (user and system) backed up with titanium, do i still need to flash gapps?
(on a slightly less relevant note: i'm copying all titanium backups as well as the rom backup from clockwork mod rom manager to my computer so as not to lose them when flashing the new rom because i'm not really sure if they would be wiped. will they?)
thanks for your help

I would keep your titanium backups on your comp, just in case. I wouldn't, however, back up system apps as that can cause conflicts when you're restoring in a different rom. Just back up user apps. And yes, you do still need to flash gapps.

Google did not ask "several popular developers." To my knowledge, it was only Google sending CyanongenMod a Cease & Desist... because of this, developers decided to respect Google and stick to the respective Google Apps rather than including them in their ROMs. It is illegal to include these gapps with their ROM. However, you're fine with including them until Google sends that developer a C&D but only CyanogenMod received the C&D.
As far as TitaniumBackup.. you can also sync your backups to DropBox and now Box.

CyanogenMod at the time was a one-man project by Cyanogen himself. Not all these other developers who are now associated with the project.
@trissc: 1) Flash ROM
2) Flash Gapps
3) Flash Kernel (if desired).
NOTE: You will have to reflash gapps after flashing a updated version of the ROM. Otherwise you will lose the gapps.
Because Gapps are google's, they don't allow the third part developer use or edit them, but they allow users to download and install by themselves

[App]Google Wallet Installer

Google Wallet Installer for Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and US Cellular Samsung Galaxy S3.
Requires ROOT, an UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER, and BUSYBOX!(A deodexed ROM is just recommended)
My newest project, RemoteFlash, was just released! Take a look and give it a try!
Wallet Installer Is Now Available For Free To All Supported Carrier Models On XDA! (Donations Appreciated)
My application, "Wallet Installer", will install Google Wallet on almost any US based Samsung Galaxy S3. It simply edits your build.prop and then places the correct modifications into your system. It downloads all the files from my personal server, which is pretty quick. Just select the appropriate Rom type: AOSP, JB Touchwiz, or ICS TouchWiz, and then your carrier: Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, or US Cellular. I also added a restore option for your build.prop, so you can restore it after you setup Google Wallet. Hopefully this helps you out and makes the process easier!
Wallet Installer has been updated on the server side. The credit goes to Paul Obrien for the new version! To install it, simply reset Google Wallet, delete it, and then rerun Wallet Installer! Make sure to also have BusyBox installed/updated!
Please donate if my work helps you : )

Unfortunately, no. It has to use an open, unencrypted recovery to flash the files. I would allow use of CWM if it was unencrypted, but it's not. An option I am planning on adding in the future is the option to backup your current recovery and flash it after TWRP has been used.

It sounds like you had a bad download. Go under your /sdcard partition and look for files like: "Wallet.zip", "recovery.img", "Fix.zip" and delete them(they shouldn't be there if they flashed correctly). After deleting those files, try again. Make sure you have a good data connection. Preferably WiFi.

Technically the open recovery isn't an issue, at least not development wise. I use it because there are different versions of CWM rolling around, and they aren't all capable of the same things. This way, with an open recovery flash, I greatly reduce the chance of bricking/other issues.

Also, if the build prop was edited to SPH-710 the Samsung voice program would still work
EXACTLY what I was looking for. I saw the entire post about getting it working, and just didn't feel that I was "qualified" enough to do what was required. I bought the app and figured I'd give it a try. It took a bit longer to download from the Play Store for some reason, but once it was done, it installed rather quickly.
I then ran the program, and selected as it was instructed. POOF it started installing, and then the phone rebooted into TWRP (I already use TWRP anyway), and all went well. I set up my account and that too went well. I tested it as I could and it works, then I decided to restore my build prop, after that again the phone rebooted, and then tested out wallet. It too works again.
Now then the only thing I am thinking about is automatic updates. I have to have that for another program for my work. I've seen the other post that you do not want the auto updates on. If on the next auto update it causes a problem I will report that here, but I think that just re running the program letting it do the build prop again, get it working, then restoring the build prop should be an easy fix for that.

Also, if the build prop was edited to SPH-710 the Samsung voice program would still work

So you got it working? Sorry for overlooking busy box in the OP. Hope everything worked out okay.

Glad it helped you! Also, thanks for the thorough post, It's really appreciated. I leave my auto-updates on, but I haven't had any issues. If you were to have issues, you can just reset wallet, restore built.prop(if you haven't already), and run Wallet Installer again.

Rom Updates
What happens after you install this get it working then flash a new version of a rom... Im currently using Tasks aokp jellybean rom. Do I need to do this everytime I update a rom or just do it once nad it's done, Also Task has 4.2 available does this matter once I update to his 4.2 releases

Every time you want to flash a new ROM, you have to reset google wallet. Then you can use my app again, after the new ROM flash, and you'll have wallet again. When it comes to 4.2 in specific I can't give you a straight answer, since I don't have access to a 4.2 ROM. My guess is that it will work fine, but it's never been tested.

If I just update a new version of a current Rom as I do weekly doing a dirty flash or not wiping just clearing dalvic cache etc, would I still need to re-install the app. Or only on a full wipe or a new Rom would I need to start from scratch? .
Another question if I re-install the app would I need to setup the payment every time and add new funds or cards or would all that information be available in the account

If you're dirty flashing, you should be fine leaving Wallet as is, but if you need to do a wipe, you should really reset Wallet. All of that information is saved on Google's servers, so it will be there next time

Having some issues with last three updates of task aokp

I can't seem to get Google now to work anymore. It keeps crashing as soon as I give it a voice command.
For some reason now, it seems like my phone lost compatibility with lots of apps. I can't update top the latest versions of the apps and download apps directly through playstore app. On my laptop, the playstore site says the apps are compatible and "downloading" but I get nothing on my phone.
I ve done a clean install of the latest update and cleared data for the individual apps that I've had problems with but I'm still not seeing any changes.
Any idea what's going on here? Is this something everyone else is experiencing?
(Didn't want to post this in the Rom thread since these issues are not just about the Rom, i think)

I've been running his ROM for a long time and never experienced this issue... It might be your play store or gapps. I would download and flash his gapps again see if that fixes it.

Are you using a different dpi?

It's the gapps that you flashed.. he posted an earlier build shortly after which fixed the issue (just have to update Google Search app in the Play Store). This was posted in the OP.
I'd probably fully wipe but at least system and both caches and reflash the latest ROM and gapps posted.

edit: Just noticed the post above saying the same thing. These are probably covered ad nauseam if you search in the QA thread as well.

I am. I changed it by editing the build.prop file. but even if i change it back to normal dpi, i still have the same issues. i just did a clean install of 5.5.13b update and still having same issues. im back at normal dpi.
is there a way to fix this?
explain clean install. i would recommend wiping data cache, dalvik, & formatting /system, /data & /media then flashing ROM/gapps. completely fresh start. what recovery do you use and what device was the version for (d2att, etc)?

clear data from play store and google services framework after reverting to stock dpi. then find a multidpi play store and flash it. then you can freely change the dpi.

Upgrade to 10.2 nightly but keep apps?

So I am currently running cm10.1.3 stable and want to upgrade to a nightly of 10.2. I know the best way to do this is to wipe all data and flash the new Rom. However I was wondering if I will be able to restore all my system settings and app data without much hassle.

You can pretty much update directly. Make sure to install the proper gapps. If you want the "clean" route, use Titanium Backup and backup all your apps + app settings (not system apps), wipe everything, install cm10.2 nightly, restore your apps and data.
So titanium is the best option? I tried to update directly but it was very buggy. It would restart a couple times a day and also the volume rocker wouldn't work randomly as well as the camera.

I agree with polobunny above. If you're upgrading from one CM build to another, you can do it inplace and easy using their updater tool. Just look in About Phone and you'll find it. I'm not using CM anymore, but when I did i always just used their tool. It downloads and installs for you...couldn't be easier.
I love Titanium Backup too. It's definitely worth getting the pro version because otherwise when you restore your apps, you will have to go through, one by one, and click install for every app. Plus, with pro you can set it to keep more than one copy of each app. I keep 2 copies in case I need to roll back even further (ya never know).
