3g data and wi-fi problem - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hi guys! :victory:
I have got a problem with my samsung galaxy nexus stock version,
without root or unlocked bootloader.
The problem is about the 3g connection and wifi when I turn off the display.
3g: when I turn off the display, after a few minutes, the phone loses the data connection. It is like it goes in power saving mode because when I
turn on the display the signal icon turns grey and after a few instants blu. In fact mail, notifications, and whatsapp's messages are notified with
a 10-15 minutes delay.
wifi: same problem, when I turn off the display I lose the signal. When I turn on the display, the wifi icon disappear for an instant, become grey and then blue. Until it turns blue I don't get notifications.
I have already done several factory resets, disabled power saving settings
and I don't use any power management apps.
SMS and calls works fine.
help me please

Welcome to the club. I have the exact same issue and had a thread going about this. Nothing i've done has solved the problem. Even gone right to complete stock rom. Same problem. I noticed this started happening with 4.2. Before that i didn't have a problem. Mine only happens on Wi-Fi, no issue on mobile network connecitons. As well it happens no matter what router i'm connected to. This should be in the Q&A and troubleshooting section though...
With W-Fi make sure its set to always on in advanced Wi-Fi settings and that minimize power is unchecked as well as avoid poor connecitons. Might help for you.

I think the problem started happening with 4.1
And I've all the settings you said :crying:

I've dealt with the issue since updating to all the 4.2.x Roms. Not sure what it is, but its here to stay.

I have 2 WiFi routers and have disconnection problems while screem off with only one router ( I know this router is crap but it should not happen, android should handle it)

Yeah my problems aren't on 3G. Rarely have I had that drop out. It's happened, but that's once a month tops.
I've gone to the point of buying a high end router to exchange my old router. No difference. I had a Cisco e4200 and now an e6500. Also had a D-link Dir655. Happened on all of those. Happens at Starbucks and at work too on their routers.
It's software problem for sure. And it can be fixed. And complaints have been put up on Google code site. There are at least 5-600 posts on that topic with people suffering the same problem. Why don't they fix it? No idea.

UPDATE
To let the wifi work, I have downloaded the app "wi-fi fixer" and using it I
fixed (just a workaround) the wifi issue!!:good:
But what can I do about the3G connection?:crying:

do you know if this problem is fixed with a custom rom??

Not for me. It's a kernel issue though since the kernel is what takes care of the Wi-Fi. But no kernel or rom has ever fixed it for me. I'm trying that wifi fixer though now.

I have the same problem.. But mine is really bad.. My 3G drops for a long time or it just never comes back, I have to reboot several times.. Not sure wat the issue is..

Found the cause of Wifi turning itself off despite sleep policy being set to never...

[This is probably only UK related but may be relevant in any Vodafone region]
OK, so Ive posted here and on Modaco a number of times regarding an issue that was driving me nuts. Whenever I moved out of range of a known WIFI ap for more than a few minutes, wifi would just turn off, and not turn itself back on when I came back in range. I would have to manually turn it on before it would connect.
Well, for the past week I have been looking at the various apps on my phone and looked at anything with Wifi permissions and uninstalled each one by one to see if that solved the issue. Nothing changed until I uninstalled the My Vodafone app. Turns out that the issues with my phone auto connecting to BTOpenzone APs are related to the wifi off. The My Vodafone seems to continuously tries connecting to BTOZ APs and after it fails a few times it switches the wifi off it seems. Since its removed my phone has been working normally.
So there you have it. This will mean nothing for most, but hopefully someones sanity will be spared with this info.
S
I don't have that app, but thanks for letting us know.
My wifi has no problem so far.
Are you sure its not setting your AP to ignore due to poor speed?

Yeah, this stopped happening for me too after uninstalling the My Vodafone app. Maybe that's one of the reasons why they've pulled it from the Android 4.0 marketplace.

I feel your pain mate,
I've had the same problem. I discovered that my phone was leasing the same IP from my router over and over around every 2 minutes due to DHCP. Then, after a while the connection would be ****ed up, grey wifi bars, sometimes still blue. Everything pointed to having a working connection. But doing anything involving an internet connection on the phone resulted in NOT being connected at all. It drove me crazy aswell and after a couple of hours of Google Fu I resolved the issue by simply assigning a static IP for my phone and using Google's Public DNS servers.
Give it a try, maybe it'll work for you aswell.

Long press on your network and tap on 'modify network' - tap 'advanced setting' and scroll down a bit, there are a few more options.
To assign a static IP you should have basic knowledge on how to configure your wifi router and such. Can't really help you there, either you know what you're doing or you don't. Things differ from router to router.

EDIT: Bulls**t!!!! don't works...
Well, that's unfortunate. I'm still baffled on why it's acting up at all. My phone was fine for almost a month before it started acting up, and I didn't change anything on my phone. Same ROM... and all of the sudden, WiFi started acting all weird.
Also I just discovered that changing 'Keep WiFi on during sleep' to never, does absolutely nothing. WiFi still stays on during sleep.
I don't know... it's the same case... I restored all the phone, lock de bootloades, etc And I updated by OTA, one by one, to 4.1, when the problem begin again... grrrr
Any idea pls??
After a lot of test.... the problem is only in jelly bean 4.1.1 y check a lot of roms 4.0.4 and works right, but in jb...

Have you even bothered to troubleshoot your own issue? Obviously since wifi works fine for almost everyone including me it's something with your setup. What do you have your wifi sleep mode set to? Try changing your frequency mode to just 2.4. Have you tried any different networks?

It's a known bug to some. I had a thread about this issue I believe. It had left for a few builds and then reappeared to some on the FI25 build. At one point we narrowed it down to a certain routers but no real evidence. It doesn't matter what your settings are in, even if you keep your settings on "keep awake always". The WiFi just stays as if connected but really isn't. It'll show greyed out bars or not active. I gave up and ignore it.
Laughing at some of you comments here. YES, I HAVE TRIED EVERYTHING. Different routers, all kinds of wifi settings, even used a root explorer to change some wifi settings. Still issues. I am ignoring it now and was hoping for a fix and it's pissing me off. Looks like it may be a hardware issue on some phones

What exactly should I be looking for in my router settings? Btw, wifi still disconnects on Parandroid JB...wtf. Everything worked fine on GB.
I still have the issue where wifi just sucks down my battery worse than 3G when it idles, but the phone gets plenty of deep sleep. It's happened across roms, fresh wipes and only on ICS and never on any gingerbread setups I've used. I've tried 3 different routers, on different frequencies. I've spent countless hours combing through battery and cpu monitors. My final verdict is that ICS was for the most part a total **** show for this phone, and it's only usable because of the selfless devs who devote their free time to tweaks and builds that get the best they can out of it.
Sorry op, but in my anecdotal example, there is no answer for particular wifi problems on ICS with this phone.

What channel and encryption type are you using (for your main connection)? Also what brands of routers have you tried it on. I don't think it is you, but I am just curious.
I use to use Linksys routers, but the last 2 I had were turds different models, and sent them in for RMA to verify the unit wasn't just a bad unit, now I won't use ANY Cisco product unless I have to (after the routers overheating in the middle of winter in my basement with proper ventilation and sending them back a few times, and their new 'secure' firmware that only allows you to connect via their website back into my local router).
lol don't listen to these people telling you to check the router settings...
It is a bug in ICS (most roms i have tried), i suggest downloading an app called Wi-fi keep alive.

Wifi Issues in 4.2.1

Not sure if it's just me, but on my Nexus I am connected to wifi while at work and at home. When the screen turns off so does my data about 10% of the time. When I turn the screen back on it will show just the cell bars (full signal) with no data icon (H, 3G, E, etc.) and no wifi symbol. After unlock it will try and re-connect and eventually does. In my wifi settings I have keep wifi on during sleep set to "always", and wifi optimization turned off (<-- not sure what this does).
Anybody else with this issue?
Yeah I get this issue too after the update...even with WiFi sleep set to never....and the new option for WiFi performance switched off! Any help devs?

Same for me, but try this : (this is what i do)
go to wifi settings and turn it on, wait for it to connect then turn it off, then on again.
this solves it for me but i have to do this every time i want to connect to a wifi network
This always happens to me too I just thought it was because of the new wifi-optimization so I never thought twice about it...

Same problem here, any fix/solution for it?
judging from responses I guess many have tried/failed to find resolution.
in my case, and I THINK it is since 4.2.1 - can't prove it - the reception is just abysmal on my home ap [repeated, one single ap id/login]. nexus 7 beyond about 4 meters from any of the devices gets a flaky connection, will drop, reconnect in the background repeatedly. if I use wifi analyzer on the nexus it shows a "fair" signal at that spot - use it on a better device and of course it shows a better [green] signal .. surprise surprise.
my geriatric Optimus P509, the galaxy s4g, ipad mini, and venerable thinkpad x120e get good signal on the very spot.
I've tried off/on wifi, cache clearing - no sacrificial animals however...
any clues out there?
oh, and as some few others have noted, I get a different signal indication in portrait mode vs. landscape, no matter how my fingers are arranged. and just the act of flipping it into the horizontal will cause a disconnect/reconnect.

same problem, don't know how to solve. I guess (just guess) it may be relavent to power management, because it often happens at night, when I left the phone untouched for several hours. I think during this long period of time the phone goes into some kind of "power saving mode", which affects the wifi and data connection.
I'm in the same boat, I've got the same problem with mi wifi. Everything works great, except when I turn off the screen and my wifi begins to act crazy turning on/off all by itself.
I've tried latest aokp latest cm 10.1, different kernels but nothing. I'm thinking to go back to 4.1.1 to see will the issue still be there.

After flashing back to CM 10.0, everything is working perfect again, no wifi issues at all.
So it's a 4.2.1 issue... Maybe a modem + 4.2.1 issue? Or is this issue specific only for a few devices?
