Which is the better kernel?

Faux or Bullet included with Juggs 4.1? If you have a preference, tell please me why...

I switched over from bullet after running it a week to fauxs and i must say battery and speed of phone went up so far im diggin it apps open faster and reboot is cut in half if anything

You really should try both out for a few days and find out yourself. There are not too many options out at the moment so trying things out to get a feel for them is best. Also, go and read what has been done to the kernal and read their threads. I understand that you want to get the best of the best right now, but understanding what you're doing to your phone and the differences between the kernals / roms is one of the things XDA is about.

Hi Funziebear, Which Faux kernal are you using? Also which modem? Did you lose or gain any functionality between the two kernels?

Hi Tri4life, thanks for the reply. I've been reading/researching for months before posting. I have only tried Juggs with the Bullet kernel though because to be quite honest, in my line of work and with all the things I have going on, flashing constantly and having my phone off/on is just not something I can do... I'd love to have an extra GS2 to experiment with, but unfortunately I can't flash and test drive a lot, I need my phone up and running as much as possible being a SQL/Oracle DBA on call basically 24/7 for a major group of hospitals.
If I can figure out a way to quickly restore my apps and settings after a ROM or kernel flash, then maybe I can do this more often, but from what I'm reading folks are saying that's hit or miss, so I've been mostly doing all my app installs and customization from scratch after a flash to a new ROM.. which takes me hours to do..
So basically I'm looking to go with some of the common successful configurations users have had luck with on here.

Faux for me! So smooth and getting 1d battery on it. Bullet doesnt come close i was getting 10 hours on that thing!

Maybe something that might help. I use Titanium backup Pro and Adw Launcher EX. I spent a lot of time gettings things right on ADW and now that I have it I backup its settings. ( this is also placement of items on homescreen ). I then use Titanium to back that up as well as all my other user apps + data. Everything is stored on my sd card. If I plan on formatting I just move my titanium backup folder to a desktop. Then format, mount, and re add to the sd. I have a folder with a few .apks to install first without adding an account. For example the titanium backup. So essentially, everytime I try out a new rom I just install titanium, have it restore my apps and their data. Then I add my account. I will clean this post up later, but it really makes things nice and allows me to install new roms in under 10 mins and keep all my previous settings.

Which of the fauxs out used..I see 2.

Yes, that is extremely helpful (especially the part about having the TBU.apk ready to install TBU without adding your account and going through the market) I actually paid for Titanium Backup Pro, so I have the full version and should be able to do this.... I've just heard folks saying that this doesn't always work...
As for launchers, I used to use LauncherPro, now I'm trying Go Launcher EX... mostly because I saw folks saying good things about it, it looks like it has more options (especially for theme-ing) and it has also been updated more recently than LauncherPro. I've never tried ADW Launcher Ex... Why do you prefer it over LauncherPro and Go Launcher?

Im using the 006r and havent had an issue it runs quick and smooth and battery is so far better than bullets , i use my phone a lot so better battery is a must the way apps open so fast on this is just a plus for me

Regarding the launcher, its all about simplicity for me. Adw is just as quick and go launcher ( in my opinion ). Also everything I needed adw takes care of. For the most part I would say they are equal competitors, but I just don't need all the extra options or features that Go Launcher provides. But yes I used Go Launcher Ex and even recommend it to my friends. Keep in mind you can do the same backup with it and restore just like ADW. Oh, but one difference I believe is that Go Launcher stores the backups in a separate file and folder as its app. So using titanium wont back that up. It will just stay on your sd card or internal. Doing the normal wipes to install a new ROM wont remove it, but of course a format will. Just a heads up, and also I haven't used Go Launcher in over a month so they probably pushed out a lot of updates and changed that feature.
About Titanium backup. You will have to have both the TBU.apk and the TBUpro.apk to install. The pro key is installed after, else you will have to wipe TB's cache from application settings. Also, if the ROM does not come with a file manager app on it by default then you will have to push with adb the .apks over. Also I think you can just copy/paste them into the app folder as well.
edit- again, I can give you my exact steps when I get home tonight. Just typing quite fast here at work.

Im using 0.0.7, its the one that comes with the rom Dewizzed. I think from 0.0.6 to 7 it just changes from a tmobile boot image to a custom one. I tried 0.0.6u with Beastmod, and it boot looped, im not sure if it had issues with beastmod or what, and ended up using DeWizzed as my rom after that instead which i think is 0.0.7r.
Im using the original modem, as im a Telus user(no wifi calling here).
I believe both kernels have most of the same features, Bullet may have more governors IIRC.
I just did a battery calibration starting yesterday actually and im at 20% after 1 day 14 hours. Not heavy usage, but i find while i use was using it there wasnt much drain.
And as i said, its SO smooth.

I'm saving Titanium Backup (com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup-1) and ROM Manager (com.koushikdutta.rommanager-1) in a folder so that I can reinstall them quick without having to log in and grab them from the Google Market. Good thinkin'

[Q] Iso image backup, is nandroid only option?

Hey guys I have two questions.
1. I would like to do a backup of my phone the same way I would do an image of my PC drive using an image software like Norton ghost or Acronis true image. Is this possible on android? I've been reading about Nandroid backup and I think this does what I want but the only way to do this with Nandroid is to root and install a new recovery correct? Am I not able to hook my phone up using the usb cable and use an app on the PC to clone the internal SD and create an image of it? I want to create an image of my phone with all its settings, contacts, txts, etc so i can have something to go back to if needed. I would like to do this before I root if possible.
2. On the Samsung Captivate section we have a wiki that has all the info you need to learn how to do certain things, mods, root, etc, etc. I found something similar for our Gnote2 here started by Mjwhirly http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1987541 but I could not find a section of removing bloatware. I saw the link that was created by mrRobinson and he mentions using De-Bloater app that will do it for you with oneclick but is there a list of all the safe to remove apps that I can go through so I can decided which apps I want to keep and which I want to remove?

Yeah you got it right - a nandroid is what you want. I'm a big time user of ghost - it's the same thing and works great. Root and install the TWRP recovery. Then first of all make a nandroid of your old system. If you want to go back to it all you'll have to do is unroot, change the recovery back, and use triangle away to reset the flash counter and you'll be where you are now - bone stock. You can't make a nandroid image backup until you root and change the recovery though.
On the second question I'd just recommend you install a rom. I use Cleanrom. It is already debloated for you (though you have still some choices), as well as optimized in ways that will amaze you (does 2+ days on battery sound good?). If you look at the various roms available, you'll see more people are using Cleanrom than any other - that should tell you something! Jedi is also great. Many of the AOSP type roms seem to have some minor issues, but the devs are trying to do a much harder thing than just debloat and optimize a rom that was originally released for your device. Whichever one you decide to try, best thing to do is just read the whole rom thread in advance if you have time. You'll read all the dumb questions that others have already asked as well as learn all the ins and outs of the whole process. If you want to then try a different rom, make a nandroid and you can always come back to your previous working system. Hope this helps and have fun!

I guess i'll just have to go ahead and root and do a nandroid backup. I have actually owned a captivate since it first came out which was my first android phone and i have never installed a custom rom. I always did everything manually like debloat and stuff. Security wise how safe are these roms, I see a lot of people just running around and flashing any rom that gets posted. What I'm trying to get at is do we know what's inside of these roms or do we just rely on the honor system and assume that they're safe, like can I trust these roms if I do my banking on them, which i am scared to do ever since I saw a message from the keyboard app on my captivate prompt about capturing my keystrokes or something, basically like a key logger, so I never did try to log onto any sites involving my banking or work email etc. but now that I have my note2 I want to be able to do all that stuff, like emails, banking, accessing my site for maintenance etc etc just for the instant access part of it instead of booting up my laptop or desktop... But I guess I can say the same thing about the stock rom too.

Your banking info is much more likely to be stolen off of a corporate website that got hacked. Whenever you use a credit card to buy something from a company or store, your number passes through some unknown employee's hands and gets stored in another database. Since millions of these numbers are stored together under sometimes weak security, these sites make much more tempting targets than your phone for thieves. The numbers are then sold off in blocks of thousands on the internet. Does that worry you enough to stop using a credit card?
However it is true that there could be a risk in installing a rom, or indeed any software on your phone. If it were discovered that a dev was putting malware in their mods or roms, I'm sure it would create quite a stir! I've never heard of this happening, though I have heard of shady stuff being done with mobile apps that you buy. All I can suggest you do is just read a lot more so that it is easier to distinguish between real threats and imaginary ones, and to learn how to protect yourself. In any case financial institutions have to protect their customers from a lot of these types of fraud, or they'd have trouble staying in business.

Sounds good. I'm just getting the chance to root and install TWRP been super busy with work so I haven't had the chance to do it. Now installing a recovery does not wipe data right? also on a different note I use both the play store and amazon app store. I have purchased a bunch of apps from amazon and most of them worked but there are a few that say my phone is not compatible. Like the need for speed games and asphalt games will not install from amazon. I haven't tried the same apps from play store but maybe I should. Oh one big one is autodesks sketchbook pro. I don't even see that option on the play store when searching using my phone but its there when i search on the pc. I purchased sketchbook mobile and that works but i needed the features that pro has so i purchased that through amazon again thinking that it would work. I thought this phone was basically a tablet, shouldn't these tablet apps work on our phones?

[Q] Lollipop or KitKat with root/bootstrap

Lets just say we get root before L is released for the AT&T Note 4. What would you do? Hold off and hope for a bootstrap so you can put a custom variation of L or any other rom, or just bite the bullet and take the update knowing you may never have root again? I think this is a dilemma that a lot of us will be facing soon.

I absolutely agree! Xposed, tibu, and Adaway!

With some user experience with a locked phone.
If you ever want to root never update officially as any chances of safely rooting becomes exponentially harder than before the update.
Stay away from those tempting lolipops when they arrive...

That's what I thought until I actually searched.
Adblock plus is a non-root version that works just as well (you just have to set your wifi and APN to proxy localhost port 2020) and there are about a billion backup alternatives...
Honestly stock rom is so smooth I might just upgrade and forget about it, custom roms always need tweaking and have some little thing I can't get perfect that bugs me.

I completely agree with you. Without an unlocked bootloader, we would just get stock Touchwiz roms anyways.
I've had many rooted Samsung phones over the past few years so I know the song and dance. The only difference between stock and a custom rom is the custom rom will be debloated, possibly have baked in extra features (which are usually alternatively achieved with xposed modules) and possibly a theme.
Take those things away, and it performs no different than stock Touchwiz. Believe me, any perceived performance difference is pure placebo. I've done many of my own tests to confirm this.
But to sum up my rant, I'm completely happy with this phone without root. It's overrated to be honest.

Just want to get rid of the bloat they stuff down our throats. I hate it and that really irritating ATT logo. I doubt I'll miss Lollipop, just as I never missed any of the updates that came after I rooted my Note 2 on day one.

I agree that a custom rom seems less and less needed. I've been OK with the stock rom so far but do wish we had a root for xposed and be able to write to microsd

The only big drawback for me and not having root is the SD card lockdown. I mean really, it is external storage and any app I chose should be allowed to wright to it when I request it.

adblock works without root by routing apps through it this does not require root.
If you have root it automatically changes the settings etc but if you don't it tells you what settings you have to manually input to get it to work just the same no root required but root preferred.

I'm in the middle... I've always rooted my phones... Just like the different customizations, but with this phone, I'm completely happy with it as is.. I just put different themes on it to spice up whatever I feel I want... But I'd at least like the option to root, if I wanted, but to answer the question, of L comes out before root is acquired, I'm definitely upgrading

Really rather have root but if it doesn't then I wouldn't mind. So far I'm really enjoying the note 4. I'm not even seeing TouchWiz stutters everything is smooth and even the stock keyboard which I usually change anyway I'm liking more and more.
But I do have to agree don't get me wrong the devs I respect for all their time and work, but I'm not into stock custom rom. It also feels nice to just use the phone for what it is. With me I was always tweaking and doing so much I never really fully enjoyed the phone.

I'd rather have root. I was wondering if I'm going to keep the note or use my rooted and safestrapped s5. But something about the note makes it hard to put down.

It was a minor annoyance for me, the camera app defaulted to sd storage and I can save pics but not edit or delete, so I just changed default storage to phone.
Also it's nice to have a really clean, organized sd card IMO I didn't like all the app data folders...

I actually found out it was causing network lag, so I switched to the real ABP: https://adblockplus.org/en/android-install
But it works the same way, the app tells you how to set up your wifi proxy, but you can just add proxy "localhost" port 2020 to your apn and its works on 4g too!

So the Note 4 is actually my first device I've owned where I didn't have an unlocked bootloader. Because of this, I'm not sure whether all the modifications I've made to my past devices were enabled because I had an unlocked bootloader.
The only thing I know we can't do is install custom roms.
So... that leaves me with a question. What kinds of things can we do with just root?
On top of that, I have some specific questions (Might think of more later) :
Will root let us be able to install the auto-brightness control that the international version of the Note 4 has? If you don't know, you're able to adjust how low or high the auto brightness stages will go without turning off auto brightness on that version. It's so much nicer than having to turn off auto, adjust to where you want, and then remember to turn auto back on when you leave that environment.
Can we remap the capacitive multitask button to be a menu button instead? And to remap long-pressing that button to be the new multitask?

I'm assuming that they will. I suppose I should have worded my post different.
So it should have said, if we get safe strap we will be able to have custom roms.
It's not quiet the same as a unlocked bootloader though.

Well regardless of whether we have custom roms through some other means, I'd personally most interested in those 2 questions I stated. That's honestly the things I want most with root at the moment.

My main and only real reason for wanting root is for Ad Block ESPECIALLY in youtube. I hate those commercials... You can install Ad Block without root (as I just did) but it just doesn't seem to work as well as it did with my last rooted device... Although I'm not sure if this is the app devs getting more creative with how they get ads through or possibly even a Lollipop things...
The other main reason was so Rocket Player could delete podcasts I had already listened too.. That was resolved with the Lollipop update so I am good to go there...
Some really like Root for Titanium backup to back up ALL app data and settings... This was handy for me back when I was flashing ROMS all the time but without that capability I don't see myself having much of a need for that since the games I play store the data in the Android folder which I don't need root to copy/backup
Another great thing that has come about the last year or so is Xposed modules.. These give you just about ANY customization you could possibly want but of course in order to use them you will also need root..... There is a great app that pulls the commercials from Youtube which I will be checking out if Root is actually here... As I said before I hate hate the ads... I'm with you on the adblock and it's one of the things I've been looking forward too also. The ads mobile gets is ridiculous, I'm fine with them on most websites on the computer but the mobile versions really kill some things.
Xposed is an interesting topic to me, I've never had any experience with it since I've never really needed it. It will be fun to see what they do. Thanks for the info.

The tool is not out. He's asking what can be done with root.

Good point I forgot about being able to add multi window for non supported apps... It would be really nice for Tapatalk to support it

Mw-pen app enabler, ive been using since i got this phone. Let's you add apps to multi window. Should work for non system apps. It's worked for me. been my solution until we get root, if we do.

Just an fyi: You can disable bloatware without having root by using @gatesjunior's Debloater utility. Here's the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2998294

I had no idea that existed or was possible without root. Great find!

To root or not to root

I've had my Pixel 2 XL for 2 weeks now and am very impressed with all of the customizations. Quick question: is it worth it to root it? My bootloader is unlocked, BTW. What are some additional benefits it I choose to root it?

The "worth it" part is up to you. What is it you want to achieve? If you want to....
Flash custom roms and kernels..
Use add blocking and themes..
Install sound mods...
Or just customize the crap outa it.....then yes.
However, a word of caution, do your research into flashing procedures, and become very familiar with fastboot just in case something goes wrong, and you need to recover your device.
Also, if you use certain banking apps, they may not work if your rooted. If you have anymore questions, feel free to ask. There are bunches of helpful people on XDA that are happy to help you. :good:

Thanks for the advice and info Badger50. I think I'll do as you recommend and research it for awhile.

Also insurance apps detect root also and some games
Magisk is a great app for hiding root from these apps most of the time.
If you want to keep up to date on the monthly Google updates it can be a bit of a pain as you have to replace your boot image and kernel and even then can have issues with the way pixel handles the rom.
But with that said it's good to at least do it learn a bit about what goes into it see if it is good for you.
Good to have a backup phone and or know your restore procedures.
Pretty hard to brick a phone with the pixel phones.
Just have to follow some steps exactly the way they tell you.
I stay stock now because of the updates some times it takes me a day to get time to fix the phone to accept the update and work properly and I like having accu battery have history from start of the phone

Without a doubt, hands down, currently I need Root. If the device has no solution then it's the last one I would pick. Currently I'm running Havoc with Magisk 18. I have the viper/Dolby sound benefits with my favorite Sony features & apps. Also I'm running lawnchair w/ quickswitch module. All in all I guess you could say I have a problem. Every since I learned I could update to KitKat instead of being stuck on stock gingerbread I've been rooting. Thanks:good:

If you have a warranty (sounds like you bought it used) or you have have insurance they will be void if you are unable to restore to stock.
That's why I don't root.
Just something to be aware of.

One of the best and ultimate reasons to root is to be able to take a nandroid backup that's better than any non-rooted backup method! It will literally backup and remember everything (due to all of this residing in the /data partition)! Your homescreen, settings, app and its data,down to every little thing!
Being able to move the clock back to the right, modify so it's better on battery life and cpu quickness, enjoy extra features in apps, and many other "tweaks" are secondary but very enjoyable and satisfactory...

it's an interesting question to me, because this is the first phone that I have decided not to bother rooting. It is also my first pixel/Nexus which I think is part of the reason. In the past getting rid of bloat and many of the controlling aspects from carriers was important to me. With the pixel, there is very little of that. Plus it just works, I'm not working around issues.
maybe I'm getting old, but to me the phone is now something I want to use not something I want to play with. When I root the phone, I have to keep up with security updates and I'm usually also fixing and patching things from trying different mods. So far the pure Android experience from Google has proven reasonably reliable and stable, and it just doesn't seem worth the hassle anymore. I will continue to buy phones I can root, how's that may change at some point.
Right now, my opinion is, for me, there is no need to root

I haven't unlocked my bootloader or rooted since the first pixel. I use adguard premium and YouTube vanced. Currently, absolutely no need for root anymore. Just my two cents.
