I need some imput from all you big phone users. I am wanting to purchase a portable charger and was wondering what all of you think?
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda premium
I personally do not need a portable charger. I charge my phone for a couple of hours once in a while. But even after a full days use, I always have at least 30% battery life left.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda app-developers app
I do that as well. My Note one would suck up a battery much quicker than this one. I was just thinking if I were to go to a baseball game or somewhere I couldn't get a quick charge.

there are many options. It just depends on your needs. In your example, it depends on how large of external batter you would like to use. You could get something like Anker Anker Astro 3 10,000mAh. It's better than the GN2, but has over triple the battery capacity of it as well. Heck, you can charge multiple devices with it. I have one, but use it mainly for the Asus Infinity Tablet.
Another option could be something like Duracell Powerhouse or Druacell Instant charger. Of these, I used a older version of the later. It's not very big and can easily fit in your pocket. It's about the same jumbo pack of chewing gum sticks. You do need to use a USB cord, which is bad if you don't have one with you; it comes with one, but they break. On the same token, it's more universal since it doesn't matter what your phone takes since there will be a USB cord for it.
Beyond that, just use an old phone charger. Just throw it in your bag and you'll have something to charge the phone if you access to an AC outlet. I've used .5mAh chargers I got with old Jawbone earpieces and Evo 4G. They don't charge as fast, but it still charges. I do this. I have keep a charger and USB cord in my backpack for school, another in a pocket of my work uniform, another in a laptop bag, and other in my truck of my car.

^^ +1 on the anker astro 3 10000 mah portable charger. Got one from newegg for around $42 and it comes with a nice carrying case and attachments. I didn't want to buy one of those funky back door battery covers that make your phone look pregnant lol
This external charger is amazing and should make your phone last a good 72-90hrs away from a wall charge.

I have the same charger by Anker. I've owned several others as well. One of things that really impresses me about this one is that I can toss into a bag and pull out weeks later and is still showing fully charged. Zagg's would be dead after a few weeks even if I didn't use it at all. Outstanding portable charger.
A spare battery and external charger will be the smallest and most efficient way to go. You can find a deal with 2 hyperion batteries and wall charger on amazon for $20.

I am not a big fan of extra batteries. The idea of doing a battery pull and replace another is not pleasing.
I got a rechargeable charger at Best Buy, an Energizer charger for $19.99. Provides 6 hours of talk time. They also have a $39.99 charger for 12 hours of talk time.
I find this to be a great alternative for extra batteries.

Those are certainly good options which don't require you to reboot or buy a charger to charge your batteries. Luckily the Evo boots much quicker than the Pre.

I picked up a 5,000 mAh dual USB charger at Costco for $15. I don't know why it was so cheap (it will completely charge my phone ~3 times). It was a few months ago so YMMV.

I'm sure you can find one somewhere. Just not the Trent Imax brand most likely. You can get energizer ones at BB.
i know i went to best buy and looked at the energizer 2000 maH one for 39.99 but for anyone that has it how much does it recharge your battery? because when i had my G1 the porrtable charger only filled it up about 30%(im talking about the portable charger sold at t-mobile)
I bought the IMP880 portable charger, 8900 mAh. I like it, although I haven't really used it much yet. But it should in theory be able to charge my phone about 5 times. It's not very big, or to heavy (to me) but it does have some heft. I wear cargo pants, so I just keep it in a pocket with me where ever I go.

It would charge it a little over 1 time. How come you don't buy things online? Generally you pay about 40% extra at stores.

Aw crap, I wrote up a reply to this earlier today on my phone, and then before I submitted it I did something, and my internet task got killed forgot about it. Yes it does come with a microUSB adapter (as well as a miniUSB and a USB splitter, and some proprietary thingy). There are 2 outputs (USB and D/C out) and one input (D/C in for charging). There's one hard button, for power or to check the power level (have to hold down on the power buttron for 4 seconds to turn it on/off), and 4 tiered power LEDs for power level.
There's a USB cable that comes with the charger is a special one that the other end is a female plug and the micro, mini, and proprietary adapter things are male, and so are interchangeable with the cord that comes with the charger, although the data cable that comes with the phone will work, and mine is actually longer than the cable that came with the phone (if that matters)

Sadly added this to my Amazon cart last week when it was $33. It went up to $43 in a couple days and I unfortunately pulled the trigger at the higher price. Looking forward to getting this in the mail today. I'll monitor the price over the next couple of weeks so I could hopefully request a credit from Amazon.
This is what i use http://store.goal0.com/index.php?p=product&id=12 , may be a little overkill but it gets the job done, I can charge my phone almost 50 times from empty to full... its also great for laptops, and small microwaves(j/k) kinda pricey but well worth it if you find yourself in the middle at the bottom of the grand canyon a lot, or the middle of the Atlantic ocean....

I have one of the energizer ones, It never does a "Full" charge to the phone, it tops it off to about 60-70% and then when the phone dies some more, it will have a little more juice to give the phone. Not exactly as advertised, but I keep it in the car for an emergency battery so it works great for that, and for note I dont have the 19.99 energizer one I have the bigger more expensive one. Also, they are put together worse then most remotes, I split mine within a week from just dropping it into the door pocket of the car.

I don't know if it has been discontinued or what - it's not easy to find online. $46.99 is also much more than what I spent.

I have this: http://www.buy.com/prod/motorola-p7...k/q/listingid/76445460/loc/111/203472669.html
It doesn't hold that much power, but it's cheap and convenient. Enough for one charge, or somewhere close to it. I also have a little mini to micro USB adapter, as the charger itself has a mini port.
I just ordered this from the T-Mobile website. I had the same thing with the vibrant and even with this bigger battery I need a second to get through a full day. I'm terrible on battery life on every phone though so it may not be a necessity for most. On my Sensation I was able to get two Anker 1900mah batteries and charging station for $20 on ebay but I can't wait for those for this phone. Hope this helps others.

It would be real cool if while phone was on dock it charged it too! OP could you let us know if it does. Thanks!

If it's the same as the samsung vibrant which I believe it is then no it does not charge your phone. You'll have to have your phone plugged in separately or just swap fully charged batteries.

Ya figured as much... I could do fine with just the two bats. but little worried about how much abuse the back cover can take, the way it clips in is fine but after daily or twice daily seems like it might wear out mighty fast since its so little material already!

Yeah I like that dock but I don't mind paying $50 for a battery and sort of a dock, but cant pay $50 for just a dock. I can play my videos through my hdmi or wifi so no use for the stand alone dock.
I really like the official Samsung dock. Can't justify $50 for it though.
MediaDock does not allow data connection
Heads up on the desktop media dock. I picked it up thinking it would allow a charging/ubuntu connection. Nope. Charge only.
Ordered the charger w/spare battery. I had one of these for my Vibrant and am already missing the spare battery... Exchange push email + the other items I run on the phone make a evening battery swap inevitable...
Just ordered one. A spare battery will be great on this phone, not to mention 2. I could go 2 days without a charger.
Deebo took your bike too?
Just got mine today. Pretty good quality and is what you'd expect from Samsung. The part that holds the phone is decent but far from a dock. Id be worried somebody could bump the table and knock it over.
All in all, its a external charger and does what its designed to do - charge batteries. I can cycle through my 3 batteries evenly now and not have to worry about juice from here on out.

I'm a bit confused. Would you mean external chargers, extra batteries or http://www.amazon.com/5600mAh-Exter...-66&keywords=samsung+galaxy+s3+mobile+charger such as this? Perhaps even an extended battery...
I have two.
First us the Zagg Sparq. Doubles as both a portable battery charger and a wall charger. Looks just like the old model Apple airport express wifi routers but in black. I get about 1.5 full charges from its battery but I never really go back to full, usually just a boost to about half from empty is how I use it. Has usb ports so you need to keep a cable with it but it charges anything with a usb charge interface. Got a set of 3" cables for mini, micro, and apple dock connector to keep the mess in my bag down.
Second one is a much smaller no name device with a micro usb plug sticking out one side. Got it relatively cheap. Only has enough to charge the phone back up to about 75-85%. But it is good for an end of the day boost.
A second battery would be better in most cases but these chargers are more generic so can use them on other toys too. Bought them to get an extra day or two of power when tenting.

This one charges phone or external battery or both and uses a regular micro usb for mains input so can be used in vehicle as well.

I just got this one its got this one for $20 off amazon its 2600mah fits nicely in your pocket so you can charge your phone while its in your pocket. A couple of problems with it is that it only came with a USB to micro USB cable but not AC adapter. It charges my phone pretty quickly but it only charged my phone about 70% before shutting off of course I was using my phone the whole time but it still should have had more of a charge in it. Also the unit its self takes forever to charge around 6 hours! But overall not a bad buy for $20.

I agree. I originally bought a super cheap no-name charger & 2 batteries on eBay for $10. They work, but the batteries don't last quite as long as my originals did.
I then bought an "Anker" charger + 2 batteries on Amazon for ~$20, and have never looked back. Batteries work -much- better than the no name ones. The charger is a bit odd tho. It's universal, so you can use it with almost ANY small Lithium Ion battery. Pins slide back and forth to connect to any type, they sense the proper polarity, and it's spring-loaded to fit any size pack.
The Anker charger with the extended batteries are fantastic. My charging port broke, but my life has only become more convenient with one in the phone, one in my bag, and one charging at home. Days of battery!
Hi folks,
I've been looking into wireless charging because, I thought, I could set up my phone to charge wireless; that is, across the room, for example. However, upon closer inspection, it looks like I'd be relegated to setting the device on a "base" in order for it to charge. Now, perhaps I was naive (or dumb) in thinking that I could chat away on the phone or otherwise keep it at my desk while some special hardware emits energy through the air to charge my device(s), but I can't for the life of me figure out what the big deal is about putting my phone on a base—that's connected to the wall(!)—to charge my phone in a manner that's less efficient than hooking it up to our 3.0 cable (which, I might add, charges my phone from the red to full in about a half hour). After all, to even take advantage of this charging method we have to buy a special battery, equipment, and even a new case that's compatible with the charger. I just don't get the value...
So, I defer to the community to enlighten me--what do you think of the setup and what benefits do you see form your investment? Also, do you notice a difference in battery performance compared to the stock battery?
Thanks,
R
Wireless charging is not worth it. IMHO.
the best i seen wireless charging is 0.8-1.0 amps which is nowhere near the 2 amps that is more or less required to charge at a fast rate in a decent amount of time from 0 to full.
Yes, it is not as fast as plugging it in but it is great for the purpose of convenience. Just drop it on the charger when you are not looking at your phone... just one downside: the charging back makes the phone thicker and you cannot use most of the cases. If you dont mind a naked phone, go for it.

reasonable question if you drop that on the pad and just leave and not go back what would it matter if it was plugging and and left? then you'll come back to a more of a charged phone lol
i use my phone all the time. to have a wireless charger is pointless to me since i cannot use it while its charging, its worthless. using the wired method not only lets me charge but also use my device as needed. its 100% crap if you ask me.... unless you're the type of person that doesnt use their device all the time and can be away from it for 3 hours +
I have the (Fast Charging)CHOE Qi Wireless Charger Kit. Didn't have to change any of my OEM. It is slower than the cord but I usually charge overnight anyway. I like grabbing it right out of bed and going. It's 50/50 for me. Probably didn't need it but now that I have it, it's cool. I got it off Amazon so it wasn't that expensive.

Plugged is the way to go.
Until they come out with a wireless method like you stated (without leaving it on the charger) then I will just stick with the wire.
is it worth it to buy official equipment for wireless charging? no
is it worth it if you buy after market? yes! less than $25 bucks and you can have a wireless charger. yes it won't charge as fast as a plugged in charger but if you are charging overnight and want to protect your usb ports, check emails thru the night (i do it for business), and don't necessarily like wires on the side of your bed, i can't see a reason not to.

Thanks, I've been looking to get a wireless charger for quite some time, maybe this will be the one.

The benefit is 2 fold for me:
1) Ease. I have a Panasonic base that adjusts it's coil to line up with the phone so at night I just drop my phone on the base and KNOW that it's charging. Better than fumbling with a cable in the dark.
2) Less physical wear on the micro USB connector.
While not a wireless charger, the Amazon 9w speed charger & the Samsung USB 3.0 wire charge my phone super fast.
Wireless Charging
I did it just for the novelty factor initially. It was a good thrill, DIY mod types.
But later, I realized it is actually useful for me. I usually walk around while talking, and with Wired charger, I had to plug/unplug again and again after every call. Also, many times after unplugging, the wire slides down, and I actually have to crouch below my desk to recover it (call me sloppy, hehe). With Wireless charging, I just talk, place it back on the pad, nothing to worry about. It keeps charging while I do my work, and I also save the port (I've had port failing problems with other phones before).
