[Q] [HELP NEEDED] Can not extract .tar.md5?? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

! C:\Users\user\Desktop\N7100XXDMB2_N7100OLBDMA4_XSE.zip: CRC failed in N7100XXDMB2_N7100OLBDMA4_N7100DXDLK5_HOME.tar.md5. The file is corrupt
That is what I get every time I try to extract the file. It gets to 99% and then errors out. I've redownloaded twice already. Am I doing something wrong?

Try using 7zip if you arent and tell us if it continues... also have you tried re-downloading? might just be a simple corruption?

Try another browser or download client to get the file

after try to extract with 7zip, it got extracted with md5 on it but still get the eror notice (corrupt file) on rar file. Then does this md5 file save to flash?

Rename the *.md5 you just extracted from the original *.zip to... *.md5.zip extension. Then extra the file you've just renamed again. If you can extract the contents to see files like recovery.img, then the md5 is safe to use. Else try a different browser...

You don't need to unzip it.
Check it's checksum and match it if it's available.
Also check the source.
You can also try to flash it directly.
It won't be flashed if it has a corrupt hash.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app

Checksum hash miss match doesn't mean the data is corrupted because the hash is appended to the end of the tar file. If you can untar (or unzip if you prefer) the contents successfully, means you can rebuild the *.tar.md5 to flash with odin or just flash the extracted contents using mobile odin...:good:

Close antivirus while downloading as well extract.
Check log of antivirus, if there is reports regarding virus notice for zip file then select restore and try extract.

You must download it again. Your zip is corrupted.

Possibly corrupted as at source.

[Q] How to extract firmware package via Kies Firmware Update

can u point out the folder???
It resides in the User Temp folder of your windows user profile.
And is deleted as soon as the firmware upgrade is completed on your phone.
can you post the exact compressed file name..what zip utility are you using.
I know winzip is suck..cant unzip alot of stuff.
What size is the package file ?
if the package is stored on non-english characters..that post problem too.
Its just any random file name ending with a TMP extension. Its about 257MB.
e.g. tmp2EFA.tmp
Still no leads to opening this file.
Post the first line of the file: some formats are identifiable based on their opening signature.

What unzip program are you using ?
Can you try change the extension to .7z and use WinRar to unzip it..Winzip no go
Before Kies starts to flash the firmware, it decrypts the .tmp file to .zip file in the same directory. When Kies update window says "Extracting binary file" or something like that, you can copy the zip file from temp directory. It contains one tar and one dll file. Tar file can be flashed with Odin

If that's the case, are there any other ways to decrypt this file back to zip directly than doing the whole upgrade thing again just for the zip?

Or may be some one can teach me?
Thanks

Thanks for the reply. But it not contain ftp file. There are several files and folders. How is the way to flash them?

Could you post a link to what you used? I'm not at my computer at the moment. So I'll help you out when i'm back at it

I follow the instruction from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1274409
and this is the download link:
http://www.multiupload.com/L4ZWC6H3HQ
I extract the file I download, it contain:
META-INF folder, few files with ".sin" extension, as long as I know, it should be one single ".ftp" file. (correct me if I'm wrong because I'm not sclever about this) and put the ".ftp" file in Flash-firmware folder. Right?
Sent from my R800i using XDA App[/QUOTE]
i see what ya doing
firstly, the file you flash is an ftf (stands for FlashTool File)
and secondly, you dont need to extract it
just place the file you downloaded ***R800i_4.0.1.A.0.283_(1247-6212).ftf*** in the firmware folder of flashtool
open the flashtool program
click flash and select the firmware in question
then follow on screen directons (turn phone off, hold back button while plugging in, and wait for the magic to happen)
sometimes, things can sound so much more complicated than they are i hope this works for you ^_^
I checked the file from your download link and it's the right '.FTF' file and you don't need to extract it unless it's in a .zip or .rar file when downloaded. If it's a FTF file you've downloaded that's the way it should stay and be used with flashtool. Just put it in the 'firmware' folder that got extracted along with x10FlashTool etc.

e: lol to slow

it's showing the files in the manner it would if i opened an ftf with 7zip. so what i suggest to you, is to change the .zip of the download to .ftf
but why it shows on your computer as a .zip is weird?!?!!? i looked at the link, and it says .ftf maybe winrar (that is the program you unzip with, right?) changed it?
but change the extension to ftf and try again
you MIGHT need to enable "show file extensions for known file types" to do it. but try without first.
Yeah... I feel wierd too. Everybody already able to flash their rom while I can't. True it is written '.ftp' but when download it, it become '.zip' file.
Or could it be.... some one already change the file?
Thank.
GN Multimedia - Xperia Arc
did you try changing the file extension?
Yes. but still make no different.
Yeah it's weird you end up with a .zip file when downloading. I used the same link last week and have just checked the downloaded file and it says .ftf file extension.
Try downloading it on your play that might help.
Regards Dousan...
I've downloaded the file, and compressed it into a self extracting archive. I'll upload it after work and give you the link. You should be able to place it into the firmware folder. Double click to extract and then go from there

Is it a zip (that doesn't have a tar inside) or is it a tar file? Zip will most likely be in CWM, tar is always ODIN.

zip. it would even allow me to open it either. gave me a bunch of errors
i just tried to go thru cwm and it aborted installation. the error says its md5 file inside

What does the file structure look like inside of the zip?
i have downloaded 2 different files that are supposedly 2.3.6 and none of them are working. i have a zip version i got from sammobile.com that i think that is password locked but only gives me an error when i try to extract it. i can open it and theres a md5 file in there
the other one is a rar file and i dont know what to do with it.
i have darkside digital warfare rom but i cannot get it to install correctly thru cwm. i gets to darth vader loading screen blue line fills up then flashes samsung and turns off and thats it.
i just want to get back to stock and take the back and start over with a new one

It's a .tar.md5 file extension?
in the type column just says md5. it doesnt say tar anywhere
Yes they are files to use through odin inside a zip file...
And they are password protected ... You must extract the zip first , then use the file in odin ...
usually samfirmware.com, sammobile.com or something like that ...
thanks for your help guys. i will try tomorrow when i get home from work. i have juggernaut running pretty good on it now
sounds like you have an incomplete dl too
where would i put in the password on the sammobile stock rom? i will redownload it to see if changes

[Q] Opening MD5 Tar Files

It's 2:45 AM and I must be losing my mind, but for the life of me, I can't remember how to access the tar files that are signed with MD5. The file in question is the new EL30 source tar, labeled SPH-D700-EL30-8Gb-REL.tar.md5
Of course, I know there is no such thing as an MD5 file, and I have checked to make sure that the MD5 generated by the file matches the MD5 checksum posted, but I can't actually OPEN the file, even if I delete the MD5 part in order to force Windows to see a tar file. Obviously ODIN won't let me flash anything other than a readable tar ball.
What am I missing here?
7Zip. It's free.

7-Zip won't allow me to open the file with either an MD5 or TAR extension as an archive.

I think you got a bad download. I can open the tar right in Windows Explorer and in 7zip.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
There is such thing as an md5 file... an md5 is a check to make sure it isn't a bad download or to encrypt passwords so when a database gets hacked, passwords can't be compromised. The file is actually a tar with several disk images for files in partition. The .md5 tells Odin to not work if the file is bad.

Turns out it was just a bad download...from K0nane's mirror.
I was surprised because both the good and the bad downloads had the same correct MD5 checksum. If the checksum can be the same for both a good AND bad download, then what's the point of a signed tar file?

It's not signed. The .md5 is just a check. You might be checking the md5 wrong.

[Q] Extract Boot.img from Stock ROM

Hi guys, I would like to extract boot.img from a Stock ROM without the need of installing it on my (Galaxy Note 2 T-mobile). All I found on the internet is how to extract it from an installed ROM.
So I would like to:
1. Extract the boot.img
2. Then flash it through ODIN to my custom ROM (Jedi Master 14)
Thanks in advance and please help me :crying:
Why would you do that?
Hastily spouted for your befuddlement
I don't know how you going to use boot.img to fix your problem. But the .md5 rom files are just zipped files. unzip and you will find the boot.img file. Are you sure that this will fix your problem?
Are you trying to change your boot image?
Use a tar archive program (7-Zip, Winzip, Winrar, PKZip, this format is pretty universal) to extract what you need from the official Samsung ROM images. (Check out sammobile.com if you haven't already, you will need to register.)
You might get some error message about the end of the archive, that's normal and due to the presence of the MD5 hash at the end of the file, which most programs will be able to work around nonetheless.
Repack the relevant file with a *nix tar binary, or under Cygwin on a Windows machine. (YMMV, but those are the two only ways I've managed to have the files work with Odin.)
Reboot phone to download mode and flash with Odin as usual.
Done.
Thanks a lot. Thats exactly what I am looking for.
