your next phone? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

i dunno about you guys but i gave up on htc long ago so ill be skipping the htc one announced today. ill be waiting for the galaxy s 4 this spring or summer.
thoughts?

Note 3.
G●Note~2 {Jedi X5}

Next phone? geez i just got this one! wont be a next phone for a while... im gonna let the market playout and by the time im ready to replace my N2 phones will have evolved into something different and worth while... im not into paying for suttle changes every 6 months
long live the N2 (i hope, lol)

The galaxy s 4 will be a pretty big update. Lets face it its hard to keep your current phone for 2 years. Im lucky if i do for 4 months lol. Im going to wait until june-july and buy the gs4. The note 2 will be the second longest phone ive held on to since the evo4g.

From phandroid 2/16/13 "According to a PDF file from South Korean financial services company Mirae Asset Group, Samsung’upcoming top-selling device will have a 5-inch 1920x1080p display, Android 4.2 and 2 GB of RAM. It is also stated that it will not feature that super-charged octa-core Exynos 5410 processor we saw at CES. Instead, the Galaxy S4 should have an Exynos 5440 quad-core Cortex A15 processor."
I agree... its a big update, coming from the S2 or similar phone, coming from the N2, not so much. 5" screen, granted, higher res but at the distance we hold our phones i doubt you'll see much of a difference, same size ram as the N2, no S-pen...
Speculated, 13 MP camera is nice tho....if it does incorporate it
Its just not that impresive to me yet. But if u got the means to upgrade every 4 to 6 months then more power to you....
I'll wait for bigger changes

Yea I dont see much of a gap between note 2 and a s4. As long as we can flash a 5.0 os when it comes out were good with note2 imo

Only thing I want from the one is the camera. Looks pretty awesome. Other than that, htc is more fail than innovation recently, they need to do something awesome to turn the tide.

Since I only buy phones when upgrade time rolls around, the next phone isn't for 2 more years, and by then the tech will have jumped way far away than I can think.
So the GN2 will be it for quite a while.

Nah, ill be waiting on the note 4 in two years maybe lol. The note 2 is a beast. Honestly in terms of real world use what more could you be looking for in a phone? Our phone literally never lags, has lte coming, great design, great community etc.... I mean honestly what is the point. I understand in the past it might have been worth the upgrade to get a phone with "less lag" or "better battery" or "better screen" but I dont see that here. I have the means to upgrade every week if I wanted to but im not blinded by spec sheets and hype. My note 2 is a monster in all aspects of a phone and until something actually revolutionary comes out (second iteration of google glasses maybe), this will be my phone for the foreseeable future.

I agree with others who say this phone is plenty for the time being. I cant imagine other phones allowing me to do half the stuff I do with this phone.
that being said, my girlfriend has an upgrade coming in just a few months, and I'm considering applying pressure towards the new blackberry OS. from what ive seen on youtube videos, it looks pretty neat. all its lacking is android apps lol
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda app-developers app

Same feeling here. This is the best phone I've ever used over the past 5 years. Nothing touches this beast. It's f**ukin awesome! I'm gonna try holding on to this for atleast a year, if not more. The only thing that has peaked my interest is the upcoming Motorola x phone.

I don't know yet. I'll see what this year holds. The HTC One is tempting and ticks a few of the right checkboxes (aluminum build, front-facing stereo speakers and integrated IR port, to name a few) but I think the likelihood of me going for that phone is slim. The SGNII has spoiled me quite a bit.
If I had to guess, the SGS4 would have a 5" or so 1080p display, 12 or so MP camera and [hopefully] come in 32 and 64 GB versions with MicroSD support and would be a prime candidate for my next phone...until the Galaxy Note 3 is released LOL.

Hold off on The Note II?

Basically, I am wondering if anyone is considering holding off on the Note II for something greater. Don't get me wrong, the Note II has fantastic specs; but all the breakthrough recently has made me wonder.
Samsung is starting to make their own mobile cameras, and is rumored to have a 13MP (I know MP isn't everything). This could mean drastic improvement on lenses and low light snapping. And now with recent news that Samsung has broke through with a DDR3 memory chip. Oppo also has a 5" 1080p, 445 PPI screen.
All this makes me think killer phones will be shown at CES, that aren't the typical improvements to annual versions. Anyone else going to hold off?

I think the note can hold its ground even with the 1080p displays and new quad core snap Dragon processors coming out. And if you want a 5.5 inch screen with s pen capabilities the note is the only way to go, and don't forget the huge 3100 mah battery that may rival the razr max battery life.
Sent from my Verizon Nexus
Will it make the Note 2 any less interesting ? The Note 2 has features (S pen) that a oppo 1080P screen with not replace.
otherwise I would be still with my ipad 3 with that retina display
I also want to try a bigger screen than my Galaxy nexus and see if I would be ok to stop using my nexus 7 as well.
big screen, a proper stylus, and separate keys.
i doubt any phone will have that until the note 3.
I think the note ii is perfect since they really focused on old technology and made it better, I'm talking about software, battery life, less bugs, and more development. If u hold of to a phone with new breakthrough technology the software, battery life, bugs, and development will be very low/bad. By the time your eligable for an upgrade all the breakthrough technology will be top notch running at its best capabilities

i going to treat that phone like a baby
i going to buy the sprint one or the verizon one so i could flash to verizon prepaid or boostmobile
i bought my mom a galaxy 3 and flash it to boostmobile and yea the speed are amazing

I know the adage about waiting in tech for the next big thing but I really feel the new exynos 5250 will be worth waiting for. My ideal phone would be the note3 with new exynos which of course won't be out for at least a year. I'm torn and might get the note2 anyways but I'm willing to be patient for now.

[Q] [Question] How many people are waiting for the Galaxy S4 or another device?

I didn't want to update to the S3 b/c they made it a dual core phone in America. So I'm waiting for a quad core or better upgrade to the GalaxyS2.
get the note 2! it's quad core.
Note 2 will be next phone
Prolly the s4 but ill play the note 2 to see if I like it.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
I agree with you, the S3 is a nice phone but not a huge upgrade from this phone unless you are in one of those few areas with lte already. Note2 is too big for me. I think the Nokia Windows 8 phones are nice, wonder if they will go Android in the future as well. Heck Windows 8 may end up being awesome. Android can be frustrating at times.
I think I'll be speaking for a lot of people in a wimax market / non wimax market without network vision coming in till next year...
Not upgrading until LTE + NV upgrades improve data speeds.
SO probably not till the S4 or any other highly competitive / powerful phone next summer when network vision is going to hit or will hit the majority of the sprint network along with 800mhz + clearwire TD LTE 2.5-2.6ghz starting to become active.
I'll skip the S3 since I really don't see much of a Diff from my S2 to warrant an upgrade at this time. Bring on the S4!!! LOL
I'll probably wait til the s4. The feature I'm waiting for the most is the camera. I want faster focus and burst shot, and last but certainly not least, a lens that is MUCH better in low light. It has to be equal or better than the iphone 5's.
I agree, buying a LTE phone that doesn't support 800mhz LTE band is pretty dumb.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
Ill be either going with the note 2 or the LG optimus g(next nexus) the optimus on sprint is 4.7" true HD IPS screen with 1280x768 resolution snapdragon s4 pro 1.5ghz quad core, 2gb ram, 13mp rear cam, 1.3mp ffc, 2100mah battery. Specs are close to the note 2 minus the smaller screen and the note 2 has a 3100mah battery, otherwise the specs are pretty close. Google's new nexus affiliate program looks like we may have a plethora of nexus phones to choose from, they just have to meet minimum hardware requirements and have any 3rd party UIs or apps as a separate install thru a theme manager, so it ships with aosp and then u can choose to add sense, TWiz, blur etc.

The nexus is apparently shipping on android 4.2, however it is still unknown if 4.2 is a JellyBean update or if it will be Key Lime Pie, as quickly after JB was released to the nexus release I'm guessing 4.2 is going to just be an update to JB to add the stylus function and a few other new functions to aosp that were previously manufacturer specific(included in 3rd party UIs) to allow for the nexus affiliate program to move forward and the UIs just needing the launcher/Widgets/apps installed instead of an entire rom needing to be flashed through the system manager

There are rumors that around 25 nexus branded devices from the new program will be available between now and q1 of 2013, some phones, some tablets and some media devices. I'm hoping they make a nexus version of the note 2 since it meets the spec requirements it would only need an aosp version to qualify for the nexus branding

i get a new device every year (at a minimum), as a rule. i was an htc fan for some time, but (coming from the EVO) the evo3d just did not impress at all, so jumped to sammy this year, with a bit of hesitation. no real regrets so far...
but so far this year, the GS3 seems a nice bump, but not a true step forward.
the HTC X series seems nice (for HW reasons), as a possibility, or possibly the Note 2.
but nothing i've seen in the last few months really grabs my balls and demands attention.

You sound like me. I dropped that Evo3d ASAP and got a GS2 though. Prior to that I had an Evo 4g Touch pro 2, Touch Pro, Mogul, Apache me and HTC went way back, but the Sprint S2 killed that love in a blink of an eye. Straight Talk and my S3 killed my love for Sprint....Pending LTE deployment in my neck of the woods. I am in love with this S3. At first I had bad experiences with the battery life, but after I installed the XDA battery life fix I get battery well over 10 hours and in emergency situations I have seen it get over a day worth of battery life with the screen using 3 hours of that time.
Im definitely waiting on the S4. I just hope that the battery life will match my current device the s3. Hoping there is a15 quad core upgraded GFX and the jaw dropping 3gb of ram. Only thing I am worried about is flash compatibility. That was one of my main reasons
I'm waiting on something noticeably better when it comes to specs and build quality. My contract was up 2 months ago, but theirs nothing out there worthy of upgrading to. The Optimus G looks good spec wise, but the build quality is questionable. I'm hoping HTC gets their act together and continues improving their uni body designs.

Note II - Still a good idea today?

I'm currently with Sprint using an Evo 4G LTE. It's nice, but I'm getting the "is the grass greener on the other side" feeling. The Note II is still a powerhouse under today's standards. I use my phone a lot and I think going from a dual core/1gb device to a quad-core 2gb device would really ease my problems. However, I have some reserves being that the Note 3 is right around the corner. But seeing that Note 2's are hovering around $350 on the low end, I figure I'd only be out $150ish rather than when the Note 3 drops later this year, my contract isn't up until February and if Sprint doesn't let me upgrade early and have to pay a fee, I'd probably fork up over $400ish. Plus I'd have to sign a new contract and I'm having doubts LTE will show up in our area any time soon which means I might switch carriers down the road depending on my situation.
I don't mind flashing, but figure I'd ask the Note II community your thoughts since you guys (and gals) have the experience.

I waited to update my 2 OG epic 4g's for 2 note 2's. & while I'm glad I did, I would recommend for you however to wait on pulling the trigger on this just yet. Since the GN3 is right around the corner & I would guess it's going to be the first 8 core phone in the US, it'll have the flexOLED, big ass GPU, 3gigs of ram, this is the droid we've all been looking for...
:victory:
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda premium
Unless you're really having issues with the phone or something, I would just wait if you can. One thing that recently has shown us, there will always be something newer and better around the corner. Thus, I'm a big proponent of does the device fit my needs philosophy. The subsidy is build into all out phone service plans, so when you're contract is up, that's the best time to consider a new device.
As for the GN3, I haven't totally kept up on it, since my contract isn't up till 2014. But It's not going to have 8-core CPU like we think of with PCs. It's going to be two quad-core chips, which is will only use the second quad-cores when needed to give better battery life. I think the flex screen is still more rumor at this point.
If you wait, the GN3 will have been out for a months, so it'll will have been rooted by the point. You may have a better idea when LTE will come into your area.
Personally, I like the GN2. The screen size is a big plus for me. It's nice not to have to constantly zoom. I find all touch virtual keyboards suck. It has good performance for the apps that are out there. Some apps are quirks and some you have to side load for various reasons. I don't find the size an issue and only took a few days to get use to. Yes, it's not as portable as your previous phone, but it's not by much really.
Ultimately, given the costs you discussed, I don't know if I would make the switch at this point, especially if you're considering switching carriers. Sounds to me you need to research more on your available carriers to see what will fits your needs the best and costs. Considering now that there are next to no carrier exclusive phones, phones are becoming secondary.

Hey man, I'm 5'6"-5'7" (depending on the convenience store I'm walking out of) and my hands are the same size as yours. They're not small but not large either. Most things are fine with the GN2 but sometimes lefty has to make an appearance. Best phone I've ever had though.
I would hold out a few more months and get the Note 3
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda app-developers app
If your going for off contract and can snag a Note 2 for around 300$ - 350$ then I would go for the Note 2. Few months later when the 3s drop you can sale your note 2 for a couple bills and upgrade then if you want.
As far as size. It took me a day to get used to it and now other phones feel to small.

I came from the Evo LTE myself(still have 2 Evo LTE I need to put on ebay, 1 black that I pre-ordered and 1 white I bought at retail price when it was released). I had the Evo 3D(still have, also need to put on ebay) and the OG Evo too. I've bought nothing but HTC for about 6-7 years, even back to the WinMo days. Last Samsung I owned was the i760(crap, lol). I'm very happy with the Note 2, though I didn't have any issues with the Evo LTE, just wanted the Note 2. I can upgrade on January 1st 2014. The Note 3 should release around that time, if sooner and I can't wait then I guess I'll pay retail for it too. I love the Note 2, but you just have to decide for yourself and consider your finances. If you can afford a Note 2 an then upgrade to the Note 3 when it's released, then go for it, you'll love it!!!

I say stick it out with the Evo LTE. I'm currently stuck with my sisters Evo after my niece broke my screen on my Note. Although the Note 2 is a quad I feel the dualcore on this is a bit more responsive. You can even notice the difference when comparing the Note 2 to the GS3 which has the same chip. Touchwiz is a bit smoother on the S3. Wait for the Note 3, that'll be the one to upgrade to.
Edit: I'm actually impressed with this phone. Battery life is decent and it puts up a fight without it even being rooted. I do miss my massive screen though

Lol. I was definitely in the Evo 3D forums as I jumped from the OG Evo 4G and bought the 3D when it was released, but I've never called anyone a "Samsuck fanboy". Hahaha, funny name but not my line so I can't take credit for it.
Anyway, good to cross paths of other members on different devices later down the road! Which phone did you come to the Note 2 from? I pre-ordered the Evo LTE, so that was my phone between the Evo 3D and the Note 2. Take care man

Lol might not have been your line but you were def a part of it. I remember the sn I came from an S2 to the Note. But I've had all the Evo devices and most of the galaxy's. Evo 4G>GS1>Evo3D>GS2>Note 2>Evo LTE (temp). That's my android history

[Q] Do i get this phone?!

Hello guys, i know this is more of a question type thread, but i just need to know this. Should i get this phone? i can get it for free on a £21 a month contract, is it still very fast and snappy? also, is the screen good? i would appreciate your feedback! thank you!
No one can really answer that question for you.
However, imo its still fast, snappy and I love the screen. I thought I would get the note 3 but it hasn't done enough to woo me.
I might be tempted to look at the lg g2 if I had no phone. But I do so I won't.
I hope that helps in some way.

I'd say the Note 2 is worth getting if your budget doesn't allow for a newer, fancier handset. How long is the contract? If it's 24 months then you might want to look at a slightly newer one, or consider selling the Note 2 half-way into the contract. I got the Galaxy S2 on a 2 year contract 2 years ago (the contract ended yesterday - I'm finally free!), but unlocked it and sold it about 14 months into the contract and bought the Note 2 outright. The Note 2 has a nice size, a better than average screen and commendable internal hardware.

Thank you! It is a 24 month contract, I was considering the nexus 5 but it is the same as my nexus 7 in design and software, so I will most likely go for the note 2. Or, I could wait till the end of my current contract and get a better phone cheaper on upgrade because at the moment I am paying £90 to cancel my current contract. Is it still worth getting the note 2 when it runs out in June?

It depends on the price of the Note 2 vs the Nexus 5. It seems to me that the Nexus 5 would be a better value upgrade than the Note 2, because it is much newer and overall the hardware is better (1080p screen, 2.3 Ghz Krait CPU etc). Over here in Australia, the price of a brand new Nexus 5 is about the same as a second hand Note 2 so if I had a choice of either phone now, I'd pick the Nexus 5 over the Note 2.
I really think the GN2 is worth it... As far as price goes it is definitely cheaper than any of the new handsets out... As far as screen goes it is very well off when it comes to quality, yes it isn't premier in comparison but any noticeable difference is subtle at most... As far as battery life one could easily argue that the GN2 is still the best... As far as firmware upgrades (if you decide to go custom) the GN2 is about as good as it gets... Already have a flashable 4.4 thanks to OmniRom (although not stable enough to use as a daily driver it is worth mentioning to show the speed of development with the device)... As far as speed goes... There really isn't anything better than the quad core functionality of the GN2. Even though some device offer octo-core processors they really don't use more than 4 at any one time and so speeds are barely noticeable at best... Ultimately the GN2, IMO was a head of its time and still has at least 2 years of fully reliable, upgradable usage left

Agree with everything that Phx said.
I'm one year in to my 2 year contract with the Note 2 and it's the first phone I've ever owned that I haven't been desperate to sell mid-contract.
It's very very fast, zero lag, great screen and fantastic battery life. 4.3 OTA update is due very soon with 4.4 already in development so you should have no worries about updates.
The Note 2 was way ahead of its time. The only thing it lacks compares to recent handsets is 1080p resolution, but on a phone screen the difference is barely noticeable.
Thank you guys, this has really helped, I have decided to wait until June and then get the GN2 then, i think it will probably be cheaper then anyway, also, what does IMO mean?
p.s I used my friends note 2 that he just got and it is very speedy and the screen looks very good. I am coming from a samsung galaxy ace, so anything would be better!

IMO = In My Opinion... I would also keep an eye out for Black Friday/Holiday sales (Xmas and New Years) as you might get a better deal during those time frames... Also check consistently as I was able to nab 3 Nexus 4s for 50 bucks a pop in March (online only) ---
---will add that though the Note 2 will always seem bulky to your peers... After 2 weeks you really grow accustomed to its size and will look at almost every other phone as tiny and hardly usable

Coming from a Galaxy Ace, the Note 2 would be a great upgrade. Personally, I've grown to prefer AOSP over Touchwiz - maybe that's why I'd prefer the Nexus 5 over the Note 2. But that's if I didn't have either phone right now; I love the Note 2 on AOSP-based firmware. It beats the Nexus 5 just with its expandable storage alone!
As you like aosp it is worth mentioning the note 2 had a good selection of custom roms, aosp, aokp, stock and hybrid. Omni rom had just released an (almost) stable kit kat 4.4 rom. Thus offering a lot of what the nexus 5 offers

I'm using RootBox v4.2 (as seen in my signature) and I love the flashy window animations and scroll effects. It's still based on 4.2.2 though - because 4.3 uses TRIM, it needs a full wipe so I haven't really been bothered to look for another ROM.
Do you know any 4.3/4.4 ROMs that have rather fancy animations?

Still worth picking up a note 3

Looking for new toy AMD I've always been intrigued by the note 3. Was considering grabbing one from T-Mobile is it still worth it ? Sure they will be announcing the note 4 soon .
I currently have the nexus 5 and like it but crave a bigger screen .
Is there root for the note 3

You're at the half way point. Have a phone that's been half a year out... or wait half a year for the Note 4. Your call.
Yes, there's root out. It's XDA after all.

And from read the note 4 is going to have a wrap around screen

I have the note 3 and I love it. The galaxy s5 demo unit came into my store the other day and I have no desire to switch to it... don't get me wrong it's REALLY nice. But I wouldn't switch to it. I say go for the N3

Wait for note 4 boot loader / Knox situation . if it's locked and Knox situation has not changed then either get a note 3 or stay away from Samsung all together . note 4 will have that dual WiFi antenna thing which is the only feature worth getting other wise I do t see them slapping 4 g of ram of 64 GB memory . faster CPU is useless and redundant as of now specially the way google is lowering requirement for their OS. The wrap around screen thing is useless to me because my phone is always encased
OP I was in the exact situation as yours. I've been using Nexus 5 and wanting to get a bigger screen, namely a Note. I weighed in the current trend, and am convinced that Samsung isn't gonna make Note 4 super interesting, so i decided to get a Note 3.
So far I am not disappointed. Touch Wiz has matured and there is no need to deviate from stock based ROMs.

Samsung has been crap this year. I really wouldn't have my hopes up for their next upcoming flagship. After all, it's just a phone. I waited a whole year for the damn s5 and it turned out to be a disappointment. I got the note 3 instead, and I totally recommend it. It will feel huge at first, but you will eventually adapt to the point of no return. After all, it's just a phone.
Just picked up the note 3 ....um wow just wow

Awww my good friend. Do it, do it, it'll make you feel good good good.
Really, do yourself a favor and get the 3. I did last month and oh boy, everything is great and no you don't really need to root, I did because I can't live without Viper audio and cerberus and remove bloat to clear up memory, ( not just disable them). Using a custom rom, it was wicked but I've changed to hyper drive rom, both fantastic. So long story short get it, and become happy for ever, until next year at lease.
Or do as I did and get the Note 3 and pay the extra $ for Jump! and when the Note 4 comes out switch

Enjoy it bro, the "wow" factor has yet to leave me. Lots of great devs here with great roms and kernel support, as well as nice community that will help you out when in need.

Had it since day one and there is nothing better out there now. No S5, HTC One (M8) or IPhone can beat this beauty and the beast phone. Only the Note 4 can surpass it when it comes out.
You will not regret getting a Note 3. May want to wait till S5 comes out in case you can get a Gear watch bundled for cheap if interested in it.

I kinda agree that there really isn't anything out there better yet. I mean things like 2k display (not needed and bigger battery drain) 2gb ram is a step backwards, and no stylus (if you use it) and the Snap Dragon 801 is only 200mhz faster with the same gpu. So at the minimum I probably wouldn't even look til the 805 SoC came out or 64 bit (which isn't even needed yet).
That not even mentioning someone has to come up with something really innovative or significantly better like the isocell with OIS. At this point, we're really at a point of saturation.
