Advice on Video Format / Specs. - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

Guys,
I have some Blu-ray movies that I want to convert to a video format that's compatible with the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, reduced to a phone-friendly size, retaining the best PQ/AQ possible.
Let me explain ... I'm basically going to rip my Blu-ray's to MKV. What I don't want to do is 'Overkill'. In other words, I know the Note 2 has a 720p display -- so I'm not going to choose 1080p Resolution for my MKV's ... I'll choose 720p. Similarly, I'd like to know what's a good Bitrate to choose --- nothing too low so I regain the best possible quality --- but not Higher then what the Note 2 supports. I don't know what kind of Bitrate Note 2 is capable of playing back smoothly.
Same thing with Audio - I have custom ffmpeg-built DTS Codec installed for MX Player so I can play DTS Audio ... but I'm not sure if that's necassary, or if I should downsample it to something that'll give me good audio for the movies (via headphones).
Essentially I'm trying to balance File Size & Quality. Obviously 6GB or 7GB video files will fill up my phone memory & SD Card pretty quickly; so I really want to avoid overkill with the Video/Audio.
Any advice?
Thanks!!

unless you plan to use HDMI out, I would just use the default settings in Handbrake. On a 5.5" screen, you're not going to notice big differences between a low bit 720 MKV versus a high. Heck, I would probably shoot for file sized that top out a 4GB, and really tried to hit 2GB average. I wouldn't even worry about DTS, just transcode to stereo.
You're going to use the HDMI, then 4GB is the average I would look for to hit. It'll have some issues, but usually just stuff like clouds. Think of FAT32 file size limit and using PS3 with an external HDD.
Personally, I keep very few movies. They're just for those times of no internet access. Otherwise, I just use Netflix, Crackle, Hulu, Plex and so on. I have a lot more content that way.

Hey - thanks for the response. I dont plan on using HDMI and indeed I was looking for no more then 2gb - 3gb file size. I agree - 720p MKV with average bit rate and stereo audio is probably the best way to go.
So you recommend handbrake? Only issue is I have blu-ray discs. Will handbrake be able to read disc and convert straight from it?
This is also for travel; not home. But couple favorite flicks I watch frequently I own discs for.
Thanks - Appreciate it.

In my experience handbrake will rip just about anything but you need a program that removes the disc rip protection thing. The name escapes me, but we couldn't discuss it in thread anyways.

I'll give Handbrake a shot and test it out shortly; and yes - I know the program you're talking about and I do have it installed on my system so protection shouldn't be an issue.
Thanks again - I'll definitely chime in here.

Hey - Quick question for you -- So I got Handbrake and it looks like it's reading my Blu-ray disc just fine; selected the main title to encode and everything. I was wondering ... is there a profile for the Galaxy Note 2 available for Handbrake? One that someone's already created?
Thanks!

I have no idea if Handbrake can read Blu Ray discs, per se. What I would suggest because it can take a while to transcode and don't like running my optical that long, rip your disc using MakeMKV. This doesn't transcode the movie; it just changes the container to MKV.
Once you have the MKV from MakeMKV, then you can transcode it it Handbrake to a small MKV file. It's an extra step, but it'll save your optical drive in the long run.
As for the DRM, MakeMKV has a build one. It works most of the time. If not, just have to wait for it to get updated. Otherwise, there is AnyDVD HD. It's not free like MakeMKV or handbrake; MakeMKV you do need to grab the update beta reg code after about every thirty days.
As for profiles, I just leave it at the default one. I just change the video and audio within their respect tabs. It's fairly intuitive and Hbandbrake has a help file with enough information to let you know the what changes in values do for most things.
Beyond that, it's going to be trail and error to see what you like. Transcoding is very CPU intensive. I'm not saying your CPU is going to run at 100% or anything. But, the more powerful and faster it is, the faster your transcode will be. Personally, I like to do 2 pass when I use file size target. It'll helps with the qaulity; the program analyzies and compares the passes. I also don't use the tubro pass. Thus, my transcodes take hours to complete.
Overall, given what you want to do, I would use MakeMKV than Handbrake. I would use the default settings, but change the video resolution (with the keep aspect ratio checked), and audio to stereo (probably AAC). No idea on your PC, but I figured it'a at least dual core. I would guess it'll take around three to fours to complete, and probably give your file around 2 GB, maybe smaller. Some movies you may have to tweak beyond that, but you'll figure it out the more you experiment. If want to test a movie before the whole thing, just do one chapter.

I don't do this for phone, but for movies I use on my home theater PC. The process is the same. The files are larger and time is longer is the only difference.

Hi -- Thanks again for your detailed reply; actually I'm already into the encoding process now as everything seems to be working out well (for the most part). Handbrake was effectively able to read my Blu-ray disc and re-encode to MKV. I do have AnyDVD HD running which decrypts the disc allowing Handbrake to read it.
I'm having a completely different issue at this point encoding using Handbrake. The problem I'm having is that my original movie, "Prometheus", which on the Blu-ray disc is in the 1920 X 1080 resolution, has the Letterbox bars in order to preserve the aspect ratio. However, when I encode using Handbrake, it's Stretching the image height --- it's not keeping the Letterbox. I do have "Keep Aspect Ratio" checked and I have tried all 4 Anamorphic settings -- None, Strict, Loose, Custome --- But I don't get the letterbox bars on top & bottom; I get a stretched height image. How can I keep the Letterbox to keep the original image size and no stretching?
Thanks!

are you sure it's stretching it? It's possible that screen resolution may be that the black bars are not needed. I'll have to check it out later. I have it as part of my digital media collection. I'll check it on Plex and see what it does. I think my rip is 1080p though.

Solved it!! Had to change "Cropping" from Automatic to Custom with 0 0 0 0 values.
Everything is absolutely perfect now; excellent PQ at 2GB filesize. Just what I needed.

The maximum resolution of the Excalibur/Dash/s620/s621 is 320x240, however your resolution should be a little less since Handbrake will scale your video in such a way that it maintains the aspect ratio (and doesn't stretch out your image). Set the bitrate to, at most, about 256 KbPS. And for the love of God, don't choose to use h.264. The amount of overclocking required to get the thing to decode h.264 would likely cause your device to 'splode. Use MP3 as the audio codec, don't bother with chapter markers either.
Those settings ought to do just fine for your Dash or other similar device. And if you wanted to be really cool, you'd share the preset for anyone else using Handbrake (Its home may be on the Mac, but there's a Linux version available and a Windows version planned)
what do u mean id share the preset? i just put the dvd in the macbook and then i open handbrake. i would love to help out people by making a thread about it once i have figured it all out. but i still have to test it on my phone . im getting it in 2 weeks when my upgrade is due. i just wanna get all my stuff ready to upload.
ohhh yah and im using mpeg4 and taking out the dolby 5.1 (im guessing stereo would make the file even smaller)

or maybe, that's why you've posted so often.
try handbrake. works like a charm. google it, or look around here. plenty of threads about it already
the best app i've discovered for PC is DVDDecrypter. it works perfectly. allows you to select by chapters, or the whole DVD. good stuff!

4.36 gigs. that is from bd rip from my own bd disc. i use adobe cs4 converter to convert. dropped it on there and although it is a huge file, i am utterly impressed at the quality. stays constant audio and video sync and never drops framerate. blacks are amazing not inky at all and colors are very very vibrant.
but anyways if you are just going to view one movie every once in awhile like i do i recommend dropping 720p onto it. its easy and amazing

Doubletwist
Doubletwist is nice, for music and apps. But it rips movies 640 x 320 too small for the screen. There are no preferences I can find the change that. I am on a MAC and I have had great success converting my .AVI files with FFMPEG and the Mp4 presets. THe movies are about 800 megs and look great.
if anyone knows of a good app for converting mkv to mp4 id be interested i ripped all of Battlestar Galactica straight from Bluray disc source its in AVCHD format but i have mkv copies of whole series i could use if i could find easy way to transcode it losslessly or play it in mkv on android looking for a like VLC type video player for android
this is gonna sound weird, but AirVideo server for iPad(it streams videos to the iPad) it's the only app i've tried so far that will convert MKV with little to no quality loss. best part, it's free. just a suggestion.

Just a quick note... Unless you are playing the movie through hdmi on a 720p display, why would you be encoding 720p movies for a phone with a 800x480 display? 4.3gb sounds like a lot of wasted space for all those extra unused pixels.
For everyone else, handbrake is the free simple alternative. And for people that care to learn a few command line options, ffmpeg is fantastic. I get much smaller better looking files from the open source x264 compiled ffmpeg. But, configured correctly, handbrake can be a front end for ffmpeg anyway.
Download Daniusoft DVD Ripper.
It searches for your phone, connects, converts the movie and places it on your sd card in the correct folder. All by itself.

Also consider the wall I hit when I first tried ripping--I ripped the DVD at 800x480 with all the correct settings, but when I tried to throw it up on my HDTV via the HDMI output, my TV would not recognize the non-standard size.
So you have a choice: 1) rip to 720p if you are going to output via HDMI or 2) rip to 800x480 if you are ONLY going to view the movie on the phone.

You could try rockplayer (http://www.ubergizmo.com/15/archives/2010/06/rockplayer_media_player_beta_for_android.html ) but i have not tested it myself since my phone is at htc service centre
edit: if you want to convert them, I use badaboom (uses my nvidia gpu so goes fast, although it s not able to convert to the maximum resolution of the phone) or handbrake (which uses cpu)
Hi, not tried myself yet, but just been googling the same question, some report success with:
http://www.any-video-converter.com/products/for_video_free/
others:
http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/iPod/ "Videora" for the iphone 3GS (free) on standard settings.
seems to play H263 or H264, and audio in AAC - no codecs yet for divx etc.
Hopefully some others will post here with good software solutions - good ones being free
The RockPlayer works great for avi/divx files on desire, thanks

Rockplayer is indeed a great AVI player but I have found a few files it plays slow or stutters on, as it's only beta at the moment I'm looking forward to the full release - in the meantime it's a great app to have.
+1, I've also been using rock player for the last couple of weeks and have had no problems with any dvd quality files. I still use mvideoplayer for x264 stuff though as its better for that and the GUI on rock player is poor - visibility is an issue quite often as it's status bar overlay is transparent with a bit of white meaning you often can't see the timecode on bright images.

hm? gpu converter? I havent seen or tried one yet.
EncodeHD is pretty simple but uses cpu power. http://dcunningham.net/media-tools/encodehd/
I pretty much recommend it if you want 1:1 and dont like messing around with resolutions and compressions.
Badaboom says my system is not compatible. But I got an 8800GT and windows 7. That should be compatible!!!
I did try badaboom now and I'm disapointed actually. It slower then EncodeHD when run from a quad 9300 3GHZ. There doesnt seem to be a way to keep the original resolution either. I mean whats the point to encode to 640x480 or even 800x400 when the original files are only 624x352.
i'm running it on windows 7 x64 with 8600m gt and works like a charm. (for those of you with ati cards there is ati avivo but i have no experience with how it works) @balos no wonder that a cpu based encoder is faster with a 3ghz quad core (i'm only on a dualcore 1.8 ghz). And badaboom not seeing your system as compatible do you have latest drivers installed?
I got it working but it only converts with a disappointing 170fps. When I pick a bigger resolution it even drops to 140fps.
With xmedia encode I can reach 200fps on HTC Desire profile and original resolution of the chosen .avi. On Ipod profile which i used with badaboom where I got 170fps. I can go up to 220fps with other cpu based encoders.
I would recommend Badaboom and similar gpu based converters only when you have a weak cpu or when you need your cpu resources freed for other things.
I'm gonna stick with EncodeHD and Xmedia. Both are free converters and since my cpu is stronger then my gpu and I dont use my computer when I do the converting its the better choice.
Well its true that we got an .avi player now with rock player which even plays them smooth. But .avi format uses about 20% more cpu power then mp4 so it should drain the battery so much faster. If thee is an power source close to where you watch your movies it doesn't really matter.

I use Danuisoft Convereter to Convert , but you can use any converter. You just need to make sure that it is set to
Resolutions : 800 x480
Container: MP4
Video Codec H264
Frame rate 29.4
I set my audio codec to AAc or MP3, but thats up to you.
You can choose h264 is the only codec that show thumbnails currently.
If you jhave any questions let me know.
i hope you only converting HDs with that setting because on the usual .avi it would be a waste.

I have made multiple tests and these settings are best for HD and SD content .avi included.
What exactly do you mean? Usually tv shows are in 624x352 24fps. 1000kbps
How could you gain anything from using a higher resolution, more fps and bigger bitrate. Makes no sense. The only thing you will get is streach your avarage 350MB file to 500Mb without improved quality.

Maybe things are different from you, but this works for me. If you have another reccomendation feel free to post your two cents.
no im just wondering how you get out of 24fps 30 and what a bigger resolution brings other then higher cpu usage and slower conversation time. Was always wonering why the cam or TS movie rippers dont just boost the resolution and make HD out of cam rips.
the short answer. It bring nothing. At last nothing good but if it works for you, go with it.
THE real setting for .avi if you want to keep best quality should always be.
h264
keep original fps count
keep original resolution
keep original bitrate.
you may add little sharpness filter.
Best and simpliest converter for this is EncodeHD

[Q] Converting Video for WP7

Hi all,
just wondering what people are using to convert .avi/.mkv/etc to mp4/wmv/etc so Zune/Wp7 can use them?
ATM i'm using anyvideoconverter and converting the video's to "Zune HD" but it seems to leave a black border of about 5mm around every edge of the video which is really annoying me, so anyone got any other good ones?
Only confirmed ones please, i've used dozens of Conversion apps that say they'd do the job but in reality they don't, so only post if you've used one for WP7/Zune.
Just convert your Video to MP4 or WMV with WVGA resolution.

Do you know of a good one which will let me just convert to mp4 WVGA Paul?
*EDIT* Just found This Thread which Recommends a GUI for MENCoder called "SUPER". My dealings with MENCoder have been great in the past so i'll give it a go and let others know what it's like.
FWIW the Microsoft way is to use Expression encoder for WMV. It's free, it's nice, and it does a good job encoding, so if you want WMV you should use that one.

My Zune does not even want to read WMV files so I can not upload. I have multiple copies of DVD's/Blu-Ray's with digital copie of movie for portable devices.
I can copy those movies to my PC and watch them, I can watch them on HD2 but zune doesn ot see them so I can not copy them on to phone. They are all in WMV or MP4 format.
MP4 don't work in Zune!
I tested with this videos: http://cid-e9230930f20e0820.office.live.com/browse.aspx/Windows Phone 7 Ads
deleted, please ignore this message
Same problem, I have digital copy's of blu-ray's that came with them, they play using WMV but the Zune Software won't see them and won't play them.
Download 'Expression Encoder'. There's an option to encode specifically for Zune.

Mabe the audio stream?
I was just playing around with this last night, and the biggest issue was the audio stream. While it plays h264 streams up to the High Profile level 3.0, it did not like an AC3 stream. I had to demux a video that I had in an mkv container, convert the audio to AAC and remux into an mp4 container. Microsoft has a whole detailed table of stream type compatibility with bit rates, profiles, etc. I can't seem to post links, so search for it at the msdn dot microsoft dot com under this title "Supported Media Codecs for Windows Phone". The list on the WP7 consumer site sucks btw.
The AAC has two compatible types, AAC-LC and HE-AACv1 or v2.
I used MeGui to redo the audio, and yamb to mux it.
Thanks dgetz, here is the link to msdn.

Hi all,
just wondering what people are using to convert .avi/.mkv/etc to mp4/wmv/etc so Zune/Wp7 can use them?
ATM i'm using anyvideoconverter and converting the video's to "Zune HD" but it seems to leave a black border of about 5mm around every edge of the video which is really annoying me, so anyone got any other good ones?
Only confirmed ones please, i've used dozens of Conversion apps that say they'd do the job but in reality they don't, so only post if you've used one for WP7/Zune.

for the time being i have been using "HTC Touch HD Video Converter"
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=467112
Seems to work very well
anyone try clonedvd mobile. I have used this in the past with the sony psp settings and gotten very good results, just a very small black strip (maybe 1-2mm) across the top and bottom of the screen (on my hd2).

I can confirm that MP4 works on the Focus, using TV shows previously converted for my iPhone 4
I use handbrake on Windows and Mac to convert my videos, using the settings from
http://lifehacker.com/5572037/handbrake-presets-for-your-new-ipad-or-iphone-4
The results have been good, but using the frame(middle) setting shown in that article does bump up the file size a good amount, and as I'm sure a lot of you have heard, storage space isn't so easy to come by on WP7 yet...
Handbrake
I too can vouch for handbrake. All of the videos I have made for my ipod touch with it work just fine on the Focus. Unfortunately, the library I have for the touch is lower resolution, with videos at about 1/2 DVD resolution and at 500kbps encode rate. I end up with about 500 MB for the about 90 min. It is nice because they don't take up a lot of room, but still look decent. When output to a standard definition TV they look fine as well.
When I first put a few of these home videos on the Focus the lower quality was immediately noticeable. To see how I could push the phone, in my reply above I took a full DVD resolution video 720x400 (16x9 non-anamorphic) and corrected the audio stream. That video looks gorgeous on the Focus screen and is great for showing off the phone. It also takes up over 2.5 GB!!!! It is encoded at a rate of about 2100 kbps. As with any video encoding for a mobile device you have to make your own decision about resolution, encoding rate, etc in that constant game of quality versus size.
One thing to note. If there are black bars on your video, then either you have a video that was not encoded in a proportion that matches your screen or it was hard coded with the black bars. The second thing should be rare nowadays (eliminating this wasted information space was the point of an anamorphic DVD). The first is actually very common. IF your media is a studio movie, almost every action film these days comes at 2.35:1 instead of 16:9=1.77:1. Personally I like viewing any of my content in the way it was originally intended to be viewed and don't ever re-proportion anything. At the moment I am not sure if the Focus/WP7 'stretches' videos. I know on my ipod touch this was an option you could toggle by double tapping the video during playback...
Maybe I will play around with a few options tonight and report back.
have a zunehd and remember seeing this thread on abi
anythingbutipod.com/forum/showthread.php?t=58183
it converts the audio of any avi/mkv and keeps the video the same, so converting only takes a few mins, and zune software recognizes it..for the zunehd anyways, maybe someone can try w/ wp7
Since I couldn't find right settings for MediaCoder (best video converter ever).
I was using Prism Video Converter for my Omnia7.
About settings for prism:
For .wmv use as video compresor WMV9 and for sound WMAV9, i am not changing the resolution as it is not bothering me at all. All files (mostly avi or mkv) played smooth after conversion.
If anybody have good settings for MediaCoder I will be much appreciated for sharing.
Thx
Okay, so MP4forHD works. The quality still isn't stunning, but it'll do for now (i guess.) However, i've encountered an issue with contrast. All my blacks appear as dark grays, which drives me nuts

Video Conversion/Playback/Best Methods...Anyone need help?

**Just in case there are still those out there looking for the best methods for video file conversion/playback, HD, mkv, avi, divx, mpeg... I enjoy troubleshooting A/V hiccups for any who could use the help, don't have ALL the answers but it's fun for me and want to contribute all I can!

with this phone i even forgot the last time i converted/encoded anything... MX Video Player is simply the best and will play anything you throw at it up to 720p. 1080p plays smoothly as well but not always. oh, and multi-subtitles/multi-audio tracks are supported as wel. only issue i found with it is it won't display embedded bitmap "vob" subtitles (other subtitles, both mixed in and external play just fine)
as far as video conversion, i take the geeky approach. AviSynth + x264 + neroAacEnc. with proper settings you will get the best results, ever... seriously. if you're scarred of command line, use the MeGUI or Handbrake frontends. same encoders, different approach.
i've spent many years experimenting with various video encoders/compressors and from my experience i've concluded that regardless of what you're trying to accomplish, h264/aac codec combo will give you the best quality than any other codec out there. oh, and make sure to use mkv container. it's the most flexible of popular container formats.
lastly, if you just want an easy tool, use Sorenson Squeeze. very flexible, easy to use, has gpu acceleration, and gives quite impressive results. only downside is its hella expensive, that is if you're trying to stay legal

Very true, our device will typically play most formats stock without a complaint. I mostly set this thread in motion for our fellow xda'ers who were having trouble finding options to overcome a single file size limitation without splitting. Your info was spot on my man.. well said!

That is a very simple, no options (other than picking the phone model) encoder. I don't know off hand that phone in its list has similar resolution with our phone (800x480 I think) but it works without a fuss. It doesn't do batch, only one at a time. I don't know if it's 2 pass or not. My preference is handbrake. If you use something like that, check in the settings that CABAC is off. That is a feature that will make smaller files but it will need more cpu to decode during playback. Off setting has larger file sizes but it's less cpu intensive during playback. I haven't made a comparison between on and off but I don't think off makes the file really huge. If you're doing DVD resolution encodes, dual pass encoding with video bitrate of 2000 is sufficient with no noticeable difference in artifacting from 2500.
Another suggestion is with the video the phone camcorder makes. It's bigger than it needs to be file size wise. Run it through handbrake with default settings, only changing CABAC to off, and perspective (screen) to none. That makes a 1080 2 gig 20 minute video down to about 300mb and I don't see the difference in video quality.

Thanks for this heads up, but I have a question. I was converting a DVD to test this one out, and it seems to work flawlessly so far, but I did notice if I choose to convert to Android 800x480 with the defaults everywhere else, I wind up with files around 1.25GB. Is there a particular set of settings I can use to shrink that size or a way to take the mp4 files and reduce their size? I'm used to mp4s being ~300 - 500MB, so just wondering if there is a way to set it up I'm not seeing.
I use Hand brake without issue on my epic touch. Just throwing out another program for everyone to try.

Welcome! Yeah you can change a few things, the bit rate and format play a lot in the over all file size. Mp4 will compress more as apposed to avi. The ps3 setting is a useful one for that. You can click on each of the presets setting and get an overview of the container/codec/bit rate/frame rate that are being used to give you an idea.

Thanks again. I found in the dialog box that allows me to rename the mp4 I can also limit the maximum size of the file. It automagically changes the bitrate that way, and I have much more manageable files now.
