turn off updates - Kindle Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

is there a way to turn off updates (i know its stupid ,most devices ask, but some just move the update) I want to be able to stop any further updates , is there a command line or script that stops this?

You can Google "Kindle Fire disable OTA", but something tells me we won't be seeing anymore updates from Amazon for this tablet. I think the best thing for you to do is install a custom ROM. If you like the stock OS, MoDaCo is the best way to go. It is rooted with OTA disabled and a host of other various mods and tweaks, but still keeps the user interface relatively untouched.

Thanks and thanks for helping everyone in here

[Q] Bootloader Issue

I may be posting this in the wrong area but I recently decided to do some rooting on my defy and accidently deleted the blur.res application. My phone still has all of the other applications on it but the phone will not access them ie the original home program. When I boot my phone it goes to the initial locked screen and will not bring up a home page. I can access the phone using adb and using the moto-phone helper webpage. Whenever I try to restore using update.zip in recovery mode it gives me the signature not verified issue. When I use adb to try to force it to boot into the bootloader it just reboots normally. Is there anything I can do to fix this issue?
Try to install another launcher with adb. Download the apk manually from the market (go launcher for instance) and look for the adb install syntax.

Way to go, Padawan.
So many posts from noobs that don't know what they're doing at all... I think we need a proper article to discourage noobs from ruining their phones. It should be long and contain solemn warnings so that they will be scared enough, decided to read more (or abandon the journey) before doing anything at all...
You know, people keep saying GREAT things about rooting the phones without mentioning the danger. (I know it's not much danger to geeky people, but it's dangerous to noobs)
P.S. The broken glass of this seems appropriate...

I was able to install GoLauncher on my phone using the search button I can bring up a few apps like the market, settings, etc, etc. I can also download an sms program which allows me to send text messages however I can't make phone calls. I knew there were dangers involved in rooting I was just bored and happened to have a spare phone. I used a number of update.zip files from various roms that I found from here because I never got a chance to do a backup of the original setup.
Now install home switcher, and make go launcher your favourite home application (launch and set it as default)

I can get the phone to do just about everything but make phone calls..... Internet is working over wifi and over the tmobile network, and I can also send and receive texts.

[EC07][KERNEL] Hacked Stock Kernel

Still haven't figure out how to build a kernel from source for the Continuum, but I can still hack the stock kernel to add some functionality to it. Since this stock, you can't expect to much, but I did what I could. I made a few memory management changes to try and get the phone to run a little better. Added a root script that will auto-root the phone on boot, you'll still need the Superuser app if you don't already have it (find it in the market). Also added init.d support for those that have busybox and cleaned up the ramdisk and such a lot. Also, this should enable custom boot animations. Put a bootanimation.zip file in /system/media/ or /data/local/ and it should display when your phone boots up. I had one person test it, and they say it works for them, so I'm hoping it works for everyone else here. Download and flash in CWM.

ChainsDD updated Superuser and the su binary tonight (of course) so I updated it in the kernel. No need to re-download unless you really want to, you can update the su binary via the Superuser app. Download link remains the same, so anyone that hasn't yet downloaded will get the updated version.
So youre saying you have source but dont know how to do it?

The source that "we" have is from the Fascinate/Mesmerize. It has the stuff in there for the Continuum, but the times I have tried to build off of it, the resulting kernel doesn't boot. Not sure if what is there is just incomplete, or if the config is off. Feel free to try and get it working. Use the garnett_03_defconfig (or similar) as the base.

EDIT: ...Forget I said that...
yea it will probably take a minute for the first boot since ite rewriting most of the system but after the first one u should be good.
imnuts thank u so much for this u have no idea how bad ive been wanting to get rid of the verizon boot lol
imnuts! thanks allot! You rock! testing now.
Animation works! so far all running good! gonna get some scripts in and let it run!
After installing my phone seems to stall a little on some apps. Like I was listening to music using UberMusic and it would skip kind of like an old CD player. And while I was listening to music I tried to open the XDA app and my phone completely froze. I couldn't open the task manager or anything. Had to pull the battery. With every reboot it seems to get worse
Try setting your cpu min above 400

I had my first ever auto-reboot on the Continuum just a few minutes ago. Brought me back to my days of toying with my Hero. And things do seem laggy since the install.
Guess I'll need to install the old kernel back, if'n it's a separate installable download. Can't remember.

If more people start having issues with it lagging or rebooting, I can undo the changes to the memory management and create a second version then. I used the same settings that I had setup on the Charge, and small hardware differences could make the settings not work properly.

Isn't there a fundamental flaw with memory management in the Froyo builds for our Continuums? I have programs running that load from scratch when I switch back to them all the time. There are games on my phone that I lose all my progress if I switch from the game to anything else. I had the Fascinate and pushed it hard and never observed any of these issues, and I was using a Froyo build on there. As I understand it, the Fascinate and Continuum have basically the same hardware.
Granted, I hadn't had any auto-reboots until this last kernel, but I've had memory issues ever since putting any Froyo build on this Continuum.
I've just held out hope that someone will either release a new rom or find out how to make these Froyo builds run as efficiently as the ones for the Fascinate.
Either way, my Continuum is a more enjoyable phone today than it has ever been before!
I've had two auto reboots since I installed the new kernel and it never happened before
Itvhas to be the changes he made last night. My phone is running fine. Not much snapper, but no issues either

Ok, I've updated the OP with new download links. The original one is the first download, custom boot animations and custom memory management settings. The second download has the custom memory management removed. The third download has the custom memory management, but retains the stock boot animation, and the last download is stock boot animations and stock memory management.
As for why people may have issues with memory on the Continuum and not the Fascinate, which is the same basic hardware. My guess is that it's due to the ticker. The fascinate doesn't need to have softkey images loaded into memory, or any of the ticker functions/images/services/etc. It may not seem like much, but a few added MBs of memory usage could make the difference people are seeing. I did have a few games on my Fascinate, and now my Charge, that would re-load if I went back to the home screen (Angry Birds and Plants v. Zombies). Hopefully the stock memory settings clear up the issues folks have had. I may also be able to add a few items back in as I suspect the major culprit was the low memory killer settings.

[Q] Learning Hub working on rooted phone?

Really? I have the I317M as well and after rooting, every time I load Learning hub I get a message saying "this device has been modified, learning hub will close to protect copyright". Can you think of anything you might have done? For example, did you install Learning Hub from the samsung app store or use the version preinstalled? etc.
thanks

If your superuser app is the normal one use voodo temporary unroot from market but if you have used cf root method then open super su app and disable it , and after finishing playing with learning hub, enable root again woth simple one click

Are you having the same problem as me in that Learning Hub doesn't load at all and just FC? I think that if we could find a way to get it to launch, this suggestion to get around the warning might work. Unfortunately, I haven't found a way to get LH to load.

I've had simular problems with video hub and movies the fix is easy.
First off because of rooting and custom recovery we trigger the flash counter. With this modification the system sees custom in the bootloader and locks the DRM content such as movies music ebooks whatever.
Use Chainfires triangle away app to reset the flash counter in your bootloader.
Once your done that load up your phone and go into the applications manager.
Because the apps detected custom before they have now left a piece of data in the app data that keeps the apps locked. Simple force close the app, clear cache and data and then start app the app.
Pretty much this causes the app to start fresh and upon seeing Official in your bootloader you are no longer locked out.
However there is an important thing to keep in mind. There is a safe gaurd in the phone that causes the flash counter to go back up to custom again every time you load into a custom recovery i.e. CWM or TWRP touch recovery.
This will cause the apps to relock themselves over again and you must repeat the process I've mentioned over again if you decide to keep a custom recovery. If this is too cumbersome th3 permanent fix is just to go back to stock recovery.
I've not tryed this with learning hub but have done so many times with video hub so it shouldn't be any different. All the best for you guys getting back into your apps. Stupid DRM BS Lol.

First off, thank you very much for taking the time an trouble to both respond and explain. I really appreciate it.
Although, thanks to your explanation I can now use video hub, the problem with Learning hub, unfortunately, is not resolved. Learning Hub gives an error that "rooting is detected and will close to protect copy right". As someone suggested above, just unchecking 'enable superuser' and re-booting should address this issue. It did not. For some strange reason, disabling superSU just causes learning hub to FC without even the rooting message appearing. However, with superSU enabled, Learning Hub loads and then gives the rooting message. In other words, root enabled allows Learning Hub to at least load and then close due to rooting. Root disabled causes Learning Hub to force close. I can't explain.
I tried disabling superSU, rebooting, clearing the data and cache for the Learning Hub app and then restarting the app. Still no go.
Any theories?

Using MrRobinson stock root -- won't work.
Yesterday I flashed my GN2 return to stock without root ( from Sammobile ) then LH was able to load and run flawlessly. After I rooted it with injected root rom from Mr Robinson method then LH was not load. So I figure out the LH is associated with system to protect copyrights ( I read about this somewhere else).
Now we have to choose rooted phone or working LH while waiting for some devs to find out. Just let u guys know.

Hi there! Using CF Root and Stock Recovery and Stock Kernel here.
Which kind of issues you had when using Video Hub? I'm rooted and I can't use the add credit card option. It causes the app to Force Close and restart after touching "OK".
And I also have Learning Hub issues just like all of you, guys. I didn't test solutions methods yet, but I will check what happens when disabling Super User and after resetting counter using Triangle Away, but I don't know if this last method will help me as I'm already using stock recovery and flashed stock ROM using Mobile Odin, so my counter probably is already at "0".

Hi,
I found a way to make it work...
1 - Root.
2 - I used Triangle away.
3 - I installed superuser from the play store on my phone.
4 - Then, go to superSu app -> SETTINGS -> Switch superuser app.
5 - Try Learning hub and readers hub, it should work.
6 - If it works you can reinstall SuperSu (I had to wait around 20-25 minutes and then I was able to reinstall SuperSu from the play store) and uninstall superuser.
It's working well for me!! Let me know if it works for you!!!
Could some one please clue me in to what learning hub is
On the plus side, what you suggested got Learning hub to load. On the minus side, none of the videos work as they all fail to authenticate. Didn't entirely work for me. Hopefully, it helps others. Regardless, this was an excellent suggestion. Great job.

That's weird... all the videos work for me; however it doesn't work when my phone is plugged inin my computer, but I think it's the same for unrooted devices ??!!! It shows a message like "data cable connected moving to previous screen etc..." so If I unplug the phone it does work well for me.

U can try to reinstall the latest update available for your tablet using LG Suite by clicking update even if no new updates are available I think!
U have the Verizon lte one! I don't know what is the latest firmware for yours, but it should work normally! I don't think you'll lose any files if u don't factory reset, but I'm not sure about this! You'll lose root if you were rooted when u upgrade recovery using LG Suite!
If u are rooted, use titanium backup for backup and easy restore.
And if u have root working for your tablet, then flash a custom recovery if u don't have one and find the latest uploaded LG official KitKat firmware in the development sections and flash it!

If this starts to occur and you recently did an upgrade recovery, you should have also done a factory reset after wards. Having recently upgrade recoveried in the LG Tool, I had a nasty loop of system ui has failed that I could only fix by also factory resetting the device.
Incidentally this does seem to occasionally still occur when I use the physical volume buttons with my chromecast.
I have this using chromcast. I have found an easy fix! Just say "ok google "(if u have enbaled it everywhere) and it fixes it!

I found a way to permanently Shut off auto updates on fire OS 4.5.2

]Ok so guys. I was just messing around because this auto update thing was annoying and found every single guide out there. Non of them did the job well. One even freezed the download at 100% but still in memory -_-
Soo I decided to do my digging myself and traced the exact sequence of the update to its core programs and believe it or not it doesn't even have the name ota or anything like that on it!
You can either do this rooted or unrooted but more efficient as root
It can work on any version as long as you see this program present>>>Amazon Device Client Platform or ADCP
Now I'm using a 3rd generation rooted and everything modded kindle (except custom Rom) but I am busybox and whatever
Which can be obtained by just downloading this loving program courtesy of peniscorp.com..if you wanna know if it works for you just download E.S file manager...goto /device and yes you can go there without root ..just go there and open build.prop and look.for Soho...if u see it...you're good to go ...
NOW LETS CUT TO THE CHASE
Step 1. Press the thanks.button down below
Step 2 Make sure u do number 1 lol
Step 3. Goto your device settings
Step 3 goto applications
Step 4 goto Manage applications
Step 5 in the drop down menu (assuming all versions have it )
And press "all applications"
Step 6 look for the program "ADCP" or Amazon Device Client Platform
Step 7 as non root user you can just fc it and clear data and cache and just avoid checking for updates! We don't wanna remind the device it should be installing updates
HOWEVER IF YOU ARE ROOTED
You could just fc it and use Droidwall or any other firewall app and look for that sucker and block it!
Don't ever try to uninstall it!
Rooted or not rooted ..those pesky updates won't bother u again!
Ps.
Droidwall is available on play store ...you can sideload it of course ..and the app it self has a pretty decent GUI so I don't think I need to get into detail on using the app
Well that's it folkes and believe me NO other ota update blocker works for the kfhd 7 2013 3rd generation and I have Looked everywhere and followed EVERY guide
They are Soo not fool.proof
So there you go guys hope it works as it did for me !
