Try downloading Kies and connecting your phone to it. Then it might realize you have an update in Kies. My phone didn't think I had an update available.
If it is a BTU, then no luck, we don't have an update yet. I am using an XEF DMA6 and it works good.

What is mean BTU?

Btu is the country code if i understand correctly. There still is no UK release to date, this was one of my main reasons for dumping htc with the lack of love they gave unlocked international devices. Get your finger out Samsung.

You don't need root to flash a stock rom via Odin, i told you that it worked with me, and i have an unbranded note 2 with country code BTU (kies display the code when connected to your device) bought it from England.

There is no stock 4.2.* released. Latest stock rom is 4.1.2 only Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
My Note II has 4.1.1 (which is IMHO, at least after my experience on Nexus 7, the best JB version), and everytime I want to check for updates it takes forever and does nothing. Is it available for all regions? I'm Central Europe, my N2 is probably from German or Austrian batch because it spoke in german to me on 1st power-on I also read a lot of people complain on battery in 4.1.2...
Latest samsung stock rom for note 2 is 4.1.2 You can have the 4.2.x versions only if you use custom roms like aokp or cyanogenmod which are based on the new update from the nexus series... and to install custom roms you need root and custom recovery or mobile Odin scribbled from "the phab" (the note 2 -N7100)

It is under warranty anyways But just out of extereme-caution: What is the proper way to update to 4.1.2? Do I just flash the whole ROM through Odin or is there OTA that I can just run (like i.e. on my Neexus 7)? If I update, will I loose all my apps (I suppose yes - so that means backing up everything via Titanium)?
Flashing with odin is more reliable, safe and stable way. Though flashing stock rom with odin / updating ota won't erase data, but backup is highly recommended before flashing anything. Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium

Yes, not all region has 4.1.2 for Note2. Mine doesn't so I flashed a custom kernel just to prevent SDS.
which kernel did you flash to prevent SDS?
