Hear me out on my process as I went from LK8 to MA7 while keeping root and data. I only have root access, completely stock rom, stock recovery on the LK8 leak Sextape and team posted a few months back. Nothing has been deleted from the phone of what was originally installed on it, out of the box from day one. All I want is the ability to back my stuff up with things like Titanium Backup and what not.
All credit goes to the dev's who do the work, this is more a guide to help you if you want to move to MA7 and are on LK8 in stock form.
1) Download Mr. Robinson's LJ1 Rooted Image - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1978470
2) Unzip the file
3) Odin the Mr. Robinsons LJ1 image
4) Upon reboot a few things occurred for me.
4a) I got an Email Support Error, never heard of it
4b) I got the Chameleon Error
4c) I still had root and all of my data as it was on LK8 but I was on LJ1
5) The phone had already downloaded the LJC update for me
6) Open Voodoo OTA RootKeeper
6a) Hit Temp. un-root (keeps backup) button
6b) Exit Voodoo OTA RootKeeper
7) Go ahead and take the OTA update for LJC letting the phone do it's thing.
8) Upon reboot a few things occurred for me.
8a) I got the Hands Free Activation, I just canceled it. I was still able to make a phone call.
8b) I got the Chameleon Error
9) Open up Voodoo OTA RootKeeper
9a) Hit Restore Root button
9b) Exit Voodoo OTA RootKeeper
10) At the time I was on LJC with Root and all of my data as it was on LK8
11) Download rwilco12's drop of the LJC to MA7 update.zip file - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2147373
12) Copy the LJC to MA7 update.zip to your SDCard
13) Open up Voodoo OTA RootKeeper
13a) Hit Temp. un-root (keeps backup) button
13b) Exit Voodoo OTA RootKeeper
14) Power Down phone
15) Enter Stock Recovery (Power, Home, Vol Up)
16) I cleared Cache......don't know if this was necessary or not.
17) Flash from external storage the LJC to MA7 update.zip
18) Phone reboot's and upgrades everything, you don't need to touch anything
19) Open up Voodoo OTA RootKeeper
19a) Hit Restore Root button
19b) Exit Voodoo OTA RootKeeper
20) I ended up on MA7, root and all of my data and apps intact. I have no Chameleon, Email or HFA errors.
Good luck and hope this helps someone out.
You could probably skip the LJ1 and just download the LJC version from Mr. Robinson's thread but these were the steps I took.
Obviously, if you aren't on stock recovery to begin with, you can do the Billiard thread where he very nicely takes you back to LJC with no count.
Or you could still run CF-Auto-Root. Thats what I just did to regain root.

I'm still stock rooted LJ1 with TWRP recovery. When I try to run the LJ1 to LJC update as in step 5, I it fails "Status 7". I have reverted to stock recovery using step 6 instructions from another thread, but still get the Status 7 failure.
Any ideas?
I've wanted to keep OTA ability, but if they always have this issue, I probably need to skip it with a ROM, but not sure if I need to incrementally upgrade roms, or if I can jump from LJ1 to ??? from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2148604&page=10 it seems I need to do it incrementally to keep from missing something.
Thanks!
By chance did you debloat or remove any stock apps while on LJ1? The OTA will only install on a stock appearing setup to my knowledge. Do you have a backup?

After getting the phone, I right away flash it with google's 4.1.1 ROM. After that I rooted it and fastboot enable with unlocked.
Since 4.1.2 came out in OTA, I have been unable to update it successfully.
I did get prompt asking me to update and when I agree, it will try to update and then reboot to update. However, the update will fail and I will still get stuck in 4.1.1. The failed update has not affected the phone in anyway. So I continue using it at 4.1.1.
Anyone can provide simple instructions on how to update to 4.2.1 without erasing all my data? Especially contacts and emails. I have read there are numerous ways like nandroid and titanium and so on. Then there are mention that I will need to root the phone again after updating and so on. This is really overwhelming for me. Too much information and not sure which direction to go.
Previously I used nexus toolkit to convert the phone to yakjuw (or something) and updated to 4.1.1. Can I use this nexus toolkit again for it? Or OTA is a better way to preserve DATA?
Very sorry if there is already a thread for this cause I can't find it. I am new to this forum and the amount of information especially in galaxy nexus section is overwhelming but at the same time AWESOME!. Great phone with great community support.

I don't think I have the stock recovery. But that can be easily downloaded, right?
As for CWM, I don't think I have it installed. I tried to keep the phone as vanilla as possible. However, I have tried CWM on other android devices before and wouldn't mind installing this.
First off, check your accounts settings. Sync should be set up for both contacts and emails (you should have a gmail account, right?). So that's of no concern. Turn your phone off. Now hold both volume buttons and press power [fastboot mode]. Use volume keys to scroll so top says recovery, then press power. Now you'll see what recovery you have, either android or cwm. If it's android, then you can hold volume up and press the power button to get the menu, which includes reboot now. If it's stock recovery, perhaps the update failed because you're rooted. Try OTA Rootkeeper, hide your root, then clear google services framework, and try the update again, and see if it sticks.
You should find out what version you have, btw, yakju, takju, etc.. You can do this by opening maps, settings, then about.
O, and OTA will preserve data, toolkit will likely wipe all in order to flash whole rom, not just update. I'd say that the common wisdom is skip the toolkits until you fully understand what, how, and why they work in such and such a way.

Ok..let me summarize:
1) Check whether phone is stock recovery or CWM.
2) If stock recovery then install OTA rootkeeper and try update OTA again.
3) if CWM recovery then .....restore back to stock recovery???
The easiest thing you can do is backup your phone. Get a toolkit for your phone. Download the factory image for your phone from Google and flash it. You will have 4.2.1 in a jiff.

Even though that's takju, it should be identical to yakju.
And if confident that you havent modified anything other than recovery and root, id still try to flash the stock recovery and ota first.

OTA update will not work on a rooted phone. You will have to flash the actual 4.2.1 ROM.
It should work with OTARootkeeper, and hidden root, I've done it myself. (read above)

I will use this method. I can find OTARootkeeper. But can't find hidden root apps.
Not sure which is the one:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.amphoras.hidemyroot&hl=en
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.troy1103.hideyourroot&hl=en
I guess i used the wrong words.. Open OTA Rootkeeper, select backup su, then temp un-root. You can download a rootchecker after this to check if your system shows as rooted or not rooted.
I tried to OTA update but failed.
First, I use OTA rootkeeper to hide root. After that I tried to update but the phone boot up to CWM and show update failed. So I then use nexus toolkit to change back to stock recovery. However, after doing that...when I check for update in the phone, it says no update.
After doing some reading, I try to update using manual method. Which is to boot into stock recovery and then choose update from cache. I have checked the update zip file in cache folder. Then I boot into stock recovery. But in stock recovery, I do not see any option to update from cache. I only see update from ADB or update from SDCARD (or USB...forgot). Tried both and it doesn't work.
The Nexus Toolkit must have restored my stock recovery back to the GSM phone that have SDCARD. Mine does not have SDCARD slot. I do not dare to restore from other recovery.img file. Anyone can point me to the right direction for a recovery.img that will not screw up my stock recovery or the phone at all?
Thanks.
The 'SDCARD' is the onboard storage, nothing wrong there
Easiest thing is to backup your data using Titanium Backup, flash the factory 4.2.1 image, reroot and then restore the backup

So much hassle just for OTA. I guess now my only choice is to use this method. Thanks.
Ultimately, if you want the OTAs stay 100% stock. If you wanna root, go custom
Since you now have stock recovery, which is probably why the OTA failed [though there could be many reasons], Have you tried to clear Google services framwork data (under applications, all), to get the update notification and try again? If it stills fails, then at this point the others are right. Titanium backup method..Just skip the system apps in the backup, right guys?
Does anyone know what will happen if I try run the OTA update that downloads on the stock Sprint rom while I'm temporarily booted into FF18 from CM9 (by flashing boot_FF18.zip from my internal sd card/multiboot folder while in CWM)?
I can only imagine 4 or 5 outcomes:
a. ota update reboots phone back to cm9 and nothing happens
b. tempboot is so awesome and smart that it allows ota to update the temp boot partiion only and doesnt flash over the radio or recovery
c. ota updates everything back to stock including radio and recovery
d. ota breaks something giving me a brick
e. something else unexpected?
Has anyone tried to see what happens? I was always afraid to try the FF18 update while tempbooted into EL29 a while back and never got around to asking this similar question back then.

It is destined to fail for sure. Ota update will look for stock recovery and won't find it so nothing will happen. I am guessing this. But are you planning to try this? If so, I would say don't do it.
I did it once just to see and all it did was boot into recovery and said some error and I booted back into my rom

Hello again, I recently got the push for update from device for the 4.1.1 with the mb1 and had TWRP and when I accepted it it booted to recovery and then nothing. So I went to Rom Manager app then updated to the CWM 6.0.3.0 regular no touch then tried to get into recovery and instead got the yellow triangle so then I had to pull battery because it was in odin download mode so no way out unless cut power. When I rebooted I got the update message again then accepted what the heck, it gave me a count down of 700 sec then in went to recovery with the android i believe CWM 6.0.3.0 and it took the official update from Sprint only to find out later on I have no root after checking with root checker app and trying to boot to recovery.
So my million dollar question is now what. I downloaded the [SAMSUNG GALAXY S3 UNIFIED TOOLKIT V7.0] Drivers, Backup, Root, Recovery + MORE [SPR] but only supports 4.1.1 and I dont know if its safe to Root 4.1.2 which is not listed unless I donate but not even sure if its supported otherwise I would donate.
How do I regain Root access the easiest way?

Ok, I'm going to answer your question.
First off, I'd recommend looking through CNexus' sticky thread about OTAs (always good to look through the stickies before you post). You'll see exactly why your OTA is failing.
Since you say that you are able to boot into CWM, I'm going to assume that you've done your Odin work. I would recommend going through it again, based on qbking77's thread. Check out the videos and learn how to use Odin to gain root and a custom recovery. (always good to take a refresher course).
Now that you have CWM and have rooted through Odin, you will not be able to update using the OTAs from Sprint(again, look through CNexus' thread).
This is not a bad thing, as Freeza always releases an updated Stock Rooted Rom based on the most recent OTA (normally he gets it done before a number of people, myself included, even get the OTA notification).
I'll give directions on how to flash a Rom below. The instructions will be for TWRP, but CWM has similar options/settings
Turn your phone completely off (hold down power for 3-5 seconds)
Boot your phone into recovery. Hold Up, Menu, and Power for a few seconds (until SAMSUNG appears on your screen and the phone vibrates)
Make a Nandroid backup. I can't emphasize this enough. In flashing, it's almost a certainty that one time, something will mess up. When that happens, you want to be able to restore a backup. In TWRP, just go into Backup Menu and choose where you want it (internal vs. External storage). It takes my phone a few (5-10) minutes to completely backup my data.
In TWRP, click the wipe button, then system. This will completely wipe the Rom from your phone. Doing this will allow you to get a "clean" install, without any settings or leftover files from your old Rom getting in the way. Instead, you could only wipe data (factory reset), which is good enough for most Roms. I'd still recommend a system wipe, though.
Also while in the Wipe menu, wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache.
Go back to the TWRP main menu.
Click Install, then find your Rom zip file (may have to switch from internal to external storage).
Let TWRP do it's thing.
If you're installing a TW-based Rom, chances are it had gapps already installed. If not, you should now flash the correct gapps package from goo.im. Make sure you're flashing the correct one, as if you don't, your google apps will force close upon use.
Reboot into system and give it time to boot (first boot sometimes takes a couple of minutes).
Set up your phone the way you like.
These should be the directions to follow whenever you flash a new Rom. Some Roms have the Aroma installer, so you'll have more options once you choose to flash the Rom zip, but those are typically easy to follow (and vary from Rom to Rom, so I won't be able to give you a good guide on that).
Hope this helps!

The files will still work exactly the same. Follow the instructions, and you'll be good.
I remember now I used qbking's method had the files in phone TeamEpic-Root-from-Recovery-v5.zip
Thanks for the heads up I got scared after updating but read If you take OTA then you will lose ROOT. This is normal what I don't get is how I was able to get OTA with CWM and not TWRP, but I read somewhere some ppl were able to take the OTA with CWM.

Just had a few Questions and needed to verify how to get the new 4.3 Update via OTA
Whats the best way to do it? My current setup is JM 18 (4.1.2) with MD1 Modem
I read in places (back when LTE was released in late March) and followed instructions on basically
1. Odin Factory image (thanx Tesh).
2. re-root through CF (without Custom Recovery)
3. run Triangle Away
4. re-Odin Teshes Factory image... lot of work but it did the trick... is there a "better" way of doing this?
Also, if I do the steps that I did last time... im pretty sure I would need to use tesh's MD1 Factory image, but would I use that with the same Odin 3.07 or do I need to update that as well. Anything else im missing (hopefully there is an easier way of getting this OTA
Ok, so just an update
I did in fact get the OTA by
1. Downloading tesh's md1 factory image and also root66's md1 root file
2. Using Odin 3.07 flashed the factory image
3. Used Odin to flash root66's root file
4. Used triangle away
5. Un installed triangle away (after it rebooted)
6. Used super su to full unroot (in settings tab)
7. Re flashed same factory image a second time
8. Through stock recovery wiped cache and factory reset (used both for good measure, not sure if just factory reset would have done it though)
Everything worked and got the OTA.
Not sure if there was a faster way of doing all this though, as I have been out of practice for some time and haven't really followed along in the threads for some time... but I can confirm this method works

Hey all, haven't been keeping up on roms and updates for a while... I've been running JellyBomb rom since the first week the phone came out and had all the .zip's of MC2 / MA7 / MA5 / LK8 / LJC / LJ1 modems to run in TWRP. I'm also seeing all the 4.4.4 rom's and I have a few questions, goomanager looks to be out of date these days and I'm still on TWRP V.2.5.0.1, I see on their site they are up to 2.8 (although I only see .zip for 2.7) for the Note 2 and still suggest to use goomanager. Can I just grab the .zip and load in TWRP recovery? I've got a fresh backup, so would I be able to go back to this backup from the 4.4.4 roms? Is it as easy as latest version of TWRP then wipe phone and load a 4.4.4 rom, or am I missing steps?
Thanks for any help:good:

It's safe to flash any modem for any rom including the NE2 modem. The 2.8 version of TWRP is linked in the thread here in development section. @jlmancuso posted a fixed version of 2.8 towards the last couple of pages in the thread so search for it because it's NOT on the site. It works fine but you can safely use Phil's recovery 6.07.9 or the newest version from his website (linked from the thread here in development) if you have any doubts or issues using it. Also be aware of the bootloader issue which causes the phone to not charge when powered off. If you have this problem on a MK4 or NE2 based TW rom then you will need to update your bootloader. This has been covered in the Community ROM thread. @jlmancuso posted a flashable bootloader in his thread on one of the last few pages. That pretty much sums it up.
FYI. Concerning nandroid backups, you must create and restore the backup from the same recovery. It is highly recommended to use Phil's recovery 6.07.9 or newest version for backups because TWRP backups are not cross compatible. So if you haven't done so already, use Phil's for your nandroid backup and go over the backup settings to include/exclude the items you want to include or exclude in your backup.

Awesome thanks!
looks like I've got a bunch of reading to do then... everything has changed. I grabbed Philz touch 6.48.4-l900.zip, looks to be the latest/last update. I'll look into that flashable bootloader next.
I may just stay with jellybomb as the phone just works so well. After I do a fresh backup with Philz recovery can I go to a 4.4.4 rom and back to the backup of older 4.1.2 jellybomb rom? Anyway, thanks for the info and pointing me in the right direction! I'll read up and report back if need be.

Yes you can flash back to an older pre 4.4 TW rom or any AOSP rom. Just stick with Phil's recovery because it's compatible with both TW and AOSP. I like the ui of TWRP better but reliability is a priority and Phil's does it all best. Good luck.
If you have ever taken the MK4 (4.3) or NE2 (4.4) OTA then your bootloader should be fine. If you've never taken the MK4 or NE2 OTA then you will most likely have the no charge issue when powered off (phone will reboot instead of charging when you plug in the charger while powered off). so you will have two choices: find and flash the bootloader that @jlmancuso posted in his Community ROM thread OR flash a stock unrooted rom with flash count reset and take all the OTA's until you are up to NE2 KK 4.4... then odin flash Phil's recovery (same version as mentioned above but its a md5.tar file) and make sure you uncheck the reboot device option in Odin and immediately pull the battery once it finishes flashing. Then reboot straight to recovery and immediately go into Phil's settings and select the re-root phone option. From that point you will be stock 4.4 unrooted WITH KNOX.. Next you will need to download and install SuperSU from the Google Play Store then immediately open SuperSU and let it remove KNOX from your phone (unless you want it). Then you can reboot to recovery and flash whatever rom you want.

Yeah no over the air updates on my phone and I found that fix/thread on the community ROM encase I do run into that issue. I did swap over to that latest/last version of Philz Recovery and all is well, also ran a fresh backup, also with you on the UI but like you said as long as it works.
Let me ask you this, after I update the bootloader to NE2 that bootlader will still work with my backup of 4.1.2?
So does the procedure go - load 4.4.4 ROM/wipe and factory data reset in recovery > update bootloader in recovery > done?
Looking at the 4.4.4 Dirty Unicorns or the 4.4.4 Liquidsmooth , just want it to run solid.
Again thanks for the help/info!

Is that right? or did you mean I'd be stock 4.4 rooted with KNOX? If I remember you can't run SuperSU unrooted, right?
So far I grabbed these zip's:
gapps-kk-20140606-signed.zip
NE2-screen-mirroring-fix.zip
tw-4.4.2-power-off-charge-fix.zip
Is that NE2 screen mirroring fix needed most of the time too?
I ran a titanium backup, I pulled the titanium backup and full backup using Phil'z recovery to my computer. I'd like to clear internal and external without loosing root as internal data is cluttered/full, is their a procedure to do that or do I need to do a factory data reset then reroot?
