[Q] GPS Signal Always Lost - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi, im fairly new to the S3, just switched from my Moto Atrix but i seem to be having an issue with the GPS. I used my Atrix for my Car Nav using Google Nav and always set it on my dash, but my S3 will work fine for maybe 10 mins (differs) and then loose signal. Once i restart the phone, it works great again, and then will eventually loose signal.
Ive tried making sure its out in the open, but still cant ever lock. Just bought the phone at Best Buy last week, but i use it everyday for Nav as i drive all over town.
Its running 4.1.1
Any help would be great.

Do you use any battery saving apps? There could be something making it close the GPS or location access after some time.
When you lose signal, did you try turning off/on your GPS/location access?

There's a couple fixes you can try in a GPS thread here in the q&a section. Did you manually update it to 4.1.1 after bringing it home?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1995347

Tried that and it worked for the day then went back to loosing signal. I have just today had gps working for 30 mins then in the middle of using it looses signal.
The only way to regain signal is to restart the phone. I'm all stock with att.

Lost signal again today during the Nav app. Gps Icon disappears completely, only way to get back it to restart. Then about 4 hrs later, happened again.

my wife's stock s3 began having gps issues after she updated it to 4.1.1. ultimately, i had her back everything up and then i performed a data wipe (stock recovery), flashed stock firmware in odin, and wiped data/cache in stock recovery again. no problems since. kies' essentially dirty flashing the jb update onto s3's seems to cause problems for many

I'm not sure really what all that meant lol. I bought the phone new and it was stock with JB.

My wife also bought an S3 a few weeks before me, also has the same issue. Dont think its something wrong with my phone, it must be on all newly bought s3's, at least on att.

Maybe. What I prayed is what fixed my wife's. Cheers

After a reset, my gps worked great for a week, for hrs at a time, then all of a sudden this week it stopped again. Loosing GPS signal and having to restart the phone.

I've been having the same issue. GPS will decide to stop working suddenly until I restart my phone. Anyone know why or have a fix? I'm rooted but an on stock Rom & 4.1.1

many, many users are having gps-related issues on stock 4.1.1
many are having these issues sometime after performing the update themselves. essentially, any kind of ROM update that does not include a full wipe before install (dirty flashing) can mean that there's a chance it might have a bug here and there. i fixed my wife's gps by:
-having her backup all her stuff
-downloading the stock firmware for her model/carrier (located in the android development section)
-booting into stock recovery to wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache
-booting into download mode and using Odin to flash the stock firmware
-booting into recovery again to wipe data and cache
no gps problems since.

My phone is all stock and always been stock still with gps issues. Even tried wiping again and still no luck. Sometimes it works for a few days no problem, other days it has issues 3 or more times a day.

Probably 6 weeks or so with no gps issues. The gps problems began after the 4.1.1 update via kies. They were intermittent initially but then worse and worse. All good to go now

Mine works great underground!
Mine.. Underground.. Do you get it?
My SGH-i777, and SGH-S730M usually get decent GPS reading wherever I am.
I try not to use them too much, I am pretty sure that the GPS can kill battery (wasted battery for something I usually don't need).

Interesting. I updated stock via kies first then I loaded the rooted Rom from here. Maybe it all stemmed from my first step.

I think you should try to uncheck google location services, where gps is. Probably poor support in your area and they messed up.

Phone lost connectivity.....is it hardware?

So my phone lost connectivity yesterday around 5pm. I though nothing of it at first, but then a few hours later it still was not able to connect to any mobile networks. I am unable to call, text or do anything with data for that matter. I tried the sim in my old trusty G1 and everything worked.
I called tech suppport and they refreshed my sim. I went through all of there troubleshooting non sense. The verdict? Warranty exchange...but wait....they are out of stock and have no estimated time of when they will be available.
Has anyone else heard of a phone suddenly losing all ability to get on a mobile network? I have been on the internet researching the issue for hours now and have tried everything I have come across, but no luck.
1. Left the battery and sim out of the phone overnight
2. Numerous airplane mode toggles
3. Connecting headphones
4. Phone Info menu and turning radio off/on + trying different radio settings
5. Reflashing radios
6. Flashing different roms
7. Odin back to stock 2.3.6 with wiping of everything
I am thinking I have been defeated by the galaxy s2.

I bet you were fiddling around with radios huh? I messed around flashing alternate radios to mine and my girl's phone and her phone was having this issue. Nothing would fix it, good thing I created a nandroid backup because all issues were fixed after I flashed back.

No...I wasnt doing anything to the phone. I had been running the same rom for about two weeks and was enjoying the luxury of amazing battery life.
While I was browsing the net on my phone, it lost signal...since then it hasn't returned.
I did do a warranty exchange so hopefully I will have a working device soon.

[Q] GPS Not Connecting...

I am on my 3rd GS3. The issue I am having is that my Navigation programs (default and telenav) will search and search for satellites, but won't connect. But when I restart my phone, it will work fine for a day or two then back to no connection.
I have spoken to Sprint and this is an unreported problem... until me. So, Sprint will replace my device. I am unrooted and completely stock. I know that Sprint is in Nashville, TN working on installing the 4gLTE towers. It isn't live yet, but they will turn on and off periodically.
I have searched these threads and I have not heard of any others with this issue. My first GS3 was rooted, but I have not done the two replacements. This has only occurred on an unrooted device.
Has anyone heard of this issue and know a resolution? I am considering rooting again to see if that is a fix. This is not a horrible issue, it is much better than a device that won't boot, but any help is greatly appreciated.

Currently Rooted running the people's rom (3.06) GPS works flawlessly. I have tested and used Scout (By Telenav) Telenav, and Google Maps with no issues at all (tested in FL, MS, And parts of AL during my drive there and back) Haven't had any issues tho.
Mine worked fine while unrooted but started not initializing for startup apps that needed it after i rooted it. I would have to go to the app directly for it to start the GPS. Otherwise the app would continuously look for location. Unfortunately I haven't been able to narrow it down to any one Rom or kernel. Any one else with this issue?

I have the same issue but haven't been able to figure out the cause either. Notice it mostly when I set my destination from my house, and wifi connected, then change location after leaving, and phone has kicked over to 3G.

Before I returned my phone for another replacement, I decided to delete all of the apps that I had downloaded. I then rebooted my phone. After 2 days, it worked fine. I then began installing apps one by one. I figured the problem had to be app specific and only apps that use gps. There was one of two apps I decided was the culprit: Facebook or JuiceDefender. I installed Facebook and it worked fine for 2 days. Ample time for the issue to appear. I have figured out that all along JuiceDefender is the problem. It is shutting off GPS like it is supposed to, but not turning it on when it is supposed to. The problem started when I reverted to stock and took the OTA Android update. I am just embarrassed that it took until now to look at the apps as the problem and not the phone. I am going to contact JD and let them know what I have found. I hope there can be a fix, JD really works well... except for my gps!
Anyways, look at apps first as the problem child before running to a repair shop (like I did!) .
Hope this helps others...

JD is designed to disable data connection to conserve battery, You can set it for a threshold where it will keep the connection alive if it's transmitting information back and forth.. (Must have Ultimate for that i believe) So if your disabling the data connection, then it'll kill GPS.
It is set on balanced. That is why I didn't think of juice defender first. Never had this issue until android updated.

I am having the same problem. My GPS will work, but for me, it's only for about 15 mins or so (while in an App that starts it). Then, if I stay in the app, it will just lose connection. If I exit the App, and the GPS turns off, then when I go back it, it will not turn on again. It isn't like it is searching and it doesn't get a signal...it never turns on. The only thing to bring it back is to reboot. I noticed it while on a custom ROM (TPR) and thought it must be that, so I flashed back to stock. Still the same thing. I then tried doing a factory reset. Still not working properly. Anyone have any other ideas?
Thanks in advance.

I took it in to Sprint they said it was the bad antenna and will give me a refurbish phone. This phone is less than a month old and why I will take a refurbish phone. Like I bought a brand new car and come in for a fix and they took me to the use car lot for a factory certificated car.
So I sent to Samsung and they claimed replacing a part and got the phone back, same problem is still happening.
Anyone can help us on this. It seems a common issue to a few of us.
Here is a simple GPS fix that works well.

[Q] GPS not working. I tried EVERYTHING!!!

Hello! I know this is a common thread, but i'm desperate!
My GPS is not locking at all, i left the phone for 10 to 20 minutes and i got nothing...
I'm using the CM10.1 MoDaCo ROM, but i tried so many ROMS, fixed configuration files, walkthroughs, etc, but none of them seem to work.
I'll list all the methods that i try so far.
1) Flash a fixed configuration file
2) Change the ROM: i tried with the stock 4.2.2, CM10, CM10.1 Nightlies, CM10.1 Experimental, MoDaCo CM10.1
3) Flash different radios. I live in Chile, so i tried UGLL1 and UGKL1
4) Clear data of Google Services Framework, restart, etc
5) Used FasterGPS to set my location in the right area
6) Used GPS Status to improve AGPS
7) Change the build.prop file
I tried every method and the combination of them, but nothing has worked for me so far....
The GPS is very important for me because i use it to track my rides with Strava, and since the GPS is not working, i cannot start the application...
I really need help...
I use a Galaxy Nexus Maguro without Wallet and live in Chile. I cannot tell exactly when the GPS started to fail, but at least in the stock 4.1.2 it was working perfect, so i guess it started failing when i updated to CM10 and then to CM10.1.....
Ok try this if you haven't.
In settings turn off all location. Reboot
Make sure location reporting is still off.
Clear data on Maps force stop maps
Reboot
Clear data on maps and force stop again
Enable location
Get gps lock with maps or easy gps.
Might not work but I have had your same problem and this fixed it .... good luck

Thanks for your answer, but unfortunately i've already tried this method with no succeed. I tried again but it didn't work...
Thanks anyway, i'm going to try to roll back to stock 4.1 (because the GPS was working with that version)
and if it really works i'm going to upgrade to 4.2 to see if i can find the error...
If someone else can give me a solution i'll appreciate it!

I already tried, but with Android 4.2.2 and it didn't work.

Well, i returned to Stock Android 4.1.2 using Fastboot, but the GPS didn't work either... So i updated via OTA to 4.2.2 and the GPS didn't worked again...
But i noticed that the Nexus S belonging to my sister, wich uses CyanogenMod 10, is not working either!
So i have a doubt now: Is it possible that CyanogenMod could have ruined our GPSs? If i erased everything via fastboot, is it possible that some remains of CyanogenMod could still be breaking my GPS? Or are our GPSs, strangely, broken at the same time?!
Please Help!!!

If you've flashed the Google factory image, you have an active sim card with data connection, and gps does not work, then you have a hardware problem.

Out of my realm of expertise, but I imagine the sirf chipset is not user serviceable. Your best bet would be Samsung factory service. I'm sorry.
Well, after giving up on trying to solve my GPS problem, it fixed itself.... i know that sounds weird, but the only thing that i did was update the CM10.1 to the latest RC2 and the problem was fixed, at least partially. Now it can find some satellites and it takes like 100 seconds.
The Gnex GPS isn't the best one, so it behaves a little weird some times, but at least is fixed now...
I really don't know what could be the problem, because i tried with almost any Rom, officials and no-officials...
Finally, the CM10.1 RC2 fixed my problem, hope this could help someone else.
Enable wifi & mobile network location in settings
Should be some code in 4.2.2 that prevents you from getting AGPS data if you disable the said option.

The problem is fixed now, but i tried everything, from rolling back to 4.1 official to 4.2.2 official, CM9, CM10, CM10.1, AOKP, etc. So i really don't know what could be the problem. I also tried the solution that you told me, but that didn't work either.
Right now, with CM10.1 RC2 my GPS is working great and i'm able to use Strava again.
I've been having the same issue. I'm running a Stock Verizon Galaxy Nexus, on my third one now. I have tried everything from apps, to resets, to disconnecting the gps, and nothing seems to work. It just seems to take forever to get a GPS lock, sometimes I just have to reset it. Not sure the issue, and I can't seem to find anyone with answers either. IDK if anyone found anything??

Cold start gps can take up to 20 minutes outdoors with a clear view of the sky if you don't have current agps data. Thereafter, you should have quick starts for a day or two.
Is your data working properly? Do you have sync settings turned off?

My data is working just fine, I actually have great 4g where I'm at, and all my sync is turned on. I've never had GPS problems with any of my other phones. I had an EVO 3D, and it worked great, cold starts would take seconds to find GPS.

And you have certified that all the gps settings/permissions are turned on? Even in the Google settings app?
Since you are stock, it might be helpful for diagnosis to preform a factory reset.
Edit - I see on another thread that you have already performed a factory reset. Next step would be to flash the factory image and see if that helps.

Thanks, I'll have to look up and see how to do that without root and boot loader unlocked, this is my third Galaxy Nexus from Verizon, they keep replacing it and I keep having the same issue
And yes all setting have been turned on, kind of driving me nuts
I'm sorry for you. it must be very frustrating.
As far as flashing an official factory image, I think you can do it unlocked if you have adb set up. Or use a toolkit, unlock, flash factory, relock (or not, why not keep it unlocked?)

"loosing" 3G on 4.3 Toro

So i was wondering if anyone else is having this issue.
for reference, I am on VZW, with the 4.1.1 radios (as the updated 4.2 radios had me locked into 3G no matter what, at work)
and i ALWAYS do a complete wipe (data/cache/dalvik/system) between ROM flashes.
4.3 bootloader as well.
anyway, this has been an issue since 4.3 hit my device...anything from pure AOSP to CM builds.
when I am on 3G, the bars will go gray and i cannot pull down data at all. (and yes i know the difference between blue and gray bars, I'm saying ANYTHING will say "network not available" not just google apps)
toggling data on/off fixes the problem. I ususally run into this problem 2-3 times a day and it is ALWAYS on 3G.
its not a huge deal, just more annoying than anything else. just wondering if I am alone here. going to be giving the 4.2.2 radios another chance and see if that fixes things.
Having this exact issue...it's driving me nuts as well. At this point I believe I've tried every radio with no luck. Going to try jumping back to 4.2 soon to see if it solves the issue.
Me too
+1
I love how much fast my GNex is on 4.3, but I don't think I can deal with this data bull**** much longer. Frankly, I'm really getting tired of getting a new version of Android, being happy at first, then finding the HUGE bug that makes my phone a horror to use. WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN THINE VZW GNEX, GOOGLE!?!?
Just an update, as I updated my radios right around the time I updated to 4.3. I just switched back to CM 10.1 and all my data connection issues went away. That means it definitely has to do with 4.3 builds and not the radio firmware.

That's right, 4.3 sucks.

Edit build.prop and include this line:

Data issues are being reported on nearly every rom for the gnex. My data reconnect /switch went from about 60 - 90 secs to a reasonable 5-10. (don't forget to reboot to apply changes)

So happy I found this thread!
I'm having the SAME issue: GSM i9250 on Straight talk ATT sim (apn setting are updated and correct). Stock not rooted; been happening since 4.3 Update. From what I've read even folks on the N4 are having similar issues.
I've factory reset 3-4 times for testing purposes (back to "normal" for about an hour then those pesky gray bars and NO data on 3G/4G).
I have to do the airplane mode toggle every 1/2 hour if I'm really using the internet. Big pain in the ass!
I always rooted my devices in the past and haven't done the GNEX because I always felt stock was smooth enough for my purposes (quasi-work-phone and I need stability). If I have to deal with this bull-sh&% I'm probably gonna have to root and install a 4.2 ROM.
Any-whoo...thanks for letting me rant :^)
Hopefully "kit-kat" will help?
same issue its very annoying... did anyone find the fix ??

Is this a fix?
My issue seems to be on 4g as well. If the phone switches from wifi to 4g or if it goes from 4g to 3g and back to 4g it shows a connection with bars but never connects to data again.

WiFi comes and goes on my GS2

Here's a new one...
Anyone else have their GS2 suddenly become allergic to Wi-Fi? Over the last day, my gs2 has been unable to maintain a wifi connection.
It was running cm10.1.3 rc1 at the time, with a bunch of apps, so I tried:
- factory reset in twrp 2.6.1. No joy
- reverted to an older nightly. No joy
- Odin back to stock. Wiping the phone again in factory recovery. Also no joy
- took the back of the phone off and reseated all the connections. It came back - - for a while. Then the phone rebooted itself while downloading updates and was no longer able to find the wifi.
Pretty sure that it's a hardware failure. Looking for second opinions.
Needless to say, the phone just went out of warranty.

And now it works after resetting my router. After my wife and one daughter suddenly had the same problem. My tablet was doing fine...
Will have to monitor the situation.

It is always nice to find a fix yourself.
I had this problem so long ago that I had forgotten about it. I think you should be good to go now.
