i already made the raw image file i want to install i just dont know how to do it, there is a /bootimages/ folder that contains a boot logo file, and 4 progress bar files with the .rle extension, i replaced the original boot logo.rle file with mine but the original image still came up after booting, and when i checked the file, the old file was back and my file was gone. so i'm asuming this is because the phone is reflashing the files during boot, but i'm not sure, anyone have any insight as to where the original files are so i can replace them? and if that would even work.
btw i'm refering to the splash art not the boot animation that happens between the splash art and the actual device being booted.
i decided i would share my custom screen i don't own these images they are taken from google images search, and put together onto a 1280x720 backdrop (nitro resolution) i also have the .rle file but its not verified working yet, i found the tool with a google search which seems to work but haven't gotten a test as the original image keeps coming back.
i think the rte file has to be build into the rom or a flashable zip that will patch the rom, if only i knew how to do that
This might help good luck

thanks for the link, it seems to a pretty sketchy still though i'll wait until the pros have it figured out further, i'm not good enough in that area to be doing trial and error. i'm going to put this on the backburner it doesn't seem worth all the work just for 1 splash image.

If you are talking about the original LG logo, i think it is built into the kernal, maybe trying to modify the kernal will let you apply it.

I have read the posts on here but I still cannot seem to get mine to work. This is a multi-part question.
I have tried to mimic the file names, sizes of the images, made sure they were in PNG format, and used the text file and directory structure of a few different working boot animations. When I try and use it with my ROM, all it does is show a black screen where the boot animation should be.
I think I have an idea of what is wrong, does a boot nimation have to be signed before it is usable (like most other zip files do) or can you just make the folder and text file, zip it using 7-Zip and you are good to go?
I have no idea what I am doing wrong. That is about the only thing I can think of. I have tried different sized images, renaming my files different, and I still get the same results.
Any help greatly appreciated greatly!
(Before anyone says anything, I did a search and tried finding my answers and I am still stumped.)

can't help you with the issue itself, but you should drop a quick post linking to this thread in the Custom Boot Animations and Splash Screens sticky (in themes & apps), and ask someone there to take a look. Pseudoremora's a genius with this stuff.
Send me what you have (pm or post here doesnt matter) and I can take a look at it.
I edited a couple of bootanimations to my liking and I have a decent handle on how they work.
Thank you lovethyevo, I will attach it to this thread. Thank you very much and if you can help me, I will be most grateful!
Is this for sense based or cm? I can probably get it to work for sense based but cm places the files in a different area if I remember correctly.

Yes, this is a Sense based ROM, I do not use CM and think I read the same (that CM stores it in a different place).
Thanks again!

Thank you, I will see what LovethyEVO comes up with and then ask there if he cannot get it. I wasn't sure if it was better to post here or there.
Update: Got about 98% of the animation to play. For some reason it's not playing the images that spell out the rom name.
Working on it though just letting you know.
100% working on my evo. All images play correctly. Enjoy.
would you guys be able to post the animation. I love looking at this kind of stuff.
I think the most important thing is to make sure that you have no compression for your zip file. I would set my pngs to 480x480 at 24 bit-depth and reuse the desc.txt files from other working boot animations.
nice one, lovethyevo - hey, have you guys had luck with something other than after effects to make the png's?

Pngs for the evo can be 480x800 but at that size it would look better in 32 bit.

I use and used gimp to fix the pngs on this animation. Very nice program but like everything else it takes a while to learn the basic stuff.
I changed all the colors in the 3D bootanimation that came out. When I run it. It only stays black I changes sizes of the images and everything. Also replaced the files in the stock bootanimation file. Also changed every image name but still nothing.
Can someone that knows how to make boot animations look at it and let me now what I did wrong ? I will thank you.....

It sounds like you just didnt zip it up correctly. The Bootanimation file has to be zipped with the "STORE" option.... as in NO compression.
try zipping it with the "store" option and copy/flash it over.
i will try that but i even just copied the images into the stock boot animation and didn't work also tried just couple images over the stock once and the when i ran it the stock once worked just not mine not sure if the images have to be in some kinda formate
Zipped it using STORE and the first folder works now thanks getting close just have to see whats going on in folder 2 thank for your help
i have it working for you. flashable zip.
looks cool even without 3d

No they didn't work. the folder with the 3d images in don't load but thank for trying
That's what i can't get working
Sorry the one in the 3d-system-media folder worked look sweet thanks

I used those pics,I changed the desc, and the folder names and the one labeled media was signed
So the media one works fine for you, cause I tested the one for sense on mine
I'm trying to change the animation on my AT&T branded Play. All I can get is the stock Android blue/green letters for a boot screen, which is the default android system boot screen. While this is a step in a much better direction than the crappy AT&T screen, I want a PSX or PSP boot animation on there. I've tried using a root file explorer to move it to system/media where it seems the original is found. Renaming the original so it won't use it and renaming my desired screen to bootanimation.zip. This yields only the stock Android animation though.
Does it need a special boot animation file to work? I can't believe I couldn't find anything on this through a search, either I didn't look hard enough or it doesn't exist I guess.
Any help is appreciated.
I used to flash them on my EVO but now I use Absolute System Root Tools to set the boot animation, because I used Zergrush and have a locked bootloader. I assume you have root access since you are using Root Explorer... I'm not sure how to set one with the method you're trying, but Absolute worked just fine for setting the Nexus S animation... get it... NeXus.. Xperia... lol. Good luck!

I don't know if AT&T has fiddled with your phone so it sets the boot animation with another method somehow. It should be as simple as you have done. Just replacing "bootanimation.zip" in /system/media/ with the one you download, assuming it is created correctly. I have changed mine this way to a Super Mario bootanimation and it works fine.
Also try Absolute System Root Tools as previous poster said. You can't set your own bootanimation with it though as far as I know. Just a big list to chose from.
nice one thanks , works on rooted play

Make sure when you .zip up your bootanimation. You do it with no compression. Otherwise it won't work.
so i gave this a shot, i used the 720 vertical bootanimation. it lets the phone boot but the whole rom has gone black. i cant see anything but the phone still works.

I had the exact same thing happen. Used adb to delete the file and everything works again. I got mine from a link from Android Police, and in the desc.txt, it says it's 720x720.. might have something to do with it, but I'm not sure. I'll try changing the numbers around and report back.
*Update
Tried changing the resolution to 720 x 1280 and the same thing happens. Putting it in /data/loca/ or /system/media gives the same result.
It's the same one as cyanogen9?? Or did they make a new one for 10?

A new one was just released for CM10. A nice change I think.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogp9f4_yEoU&feature=player_embedded
I see that the bootanimation from the AT&T nightly is still the CM9 version.
The file from the experimental for the International GS3 has the right graphics.
That works nicely for me
Course I'm on the International GS3 but only CM9.
It's because whoever created the bootanimation.zip file used an actual compressed .zip file instead of just using the extension as a wrapper.
Below is a fixed version that actually has the correct black for the background so that it doesn't look like a hackjob on AMOLED screens.

LoL. Same thing happened to me this morning. The phone booted up but screen stayed black no matter what. I did a battery pull, booted into CWM and restored my nandroid. Then I made a request thread in the apps/themes forum and zmore hooked me up with a CWM flashable zip of that animation and it works like a charm. Here ya go.

Yeah, you can do this. I use the Google Edition HTC One boot animation. Just Google it and you can find the file. Simply rename it bootanimation.zip and place it in /system/media. Make sure you replace the bootanimation.zip currently in there to something else such as bootanimation.bak. You might have to change permissions to rw-r-r as well.
my /system/media doesn't have an existing bootanimation.zip. Nevertheless I placed that file in that location, set permissions and the stock Verizon animation still showed. Now I'm stumped. Pulled the file from HERE, trying both a manual addition as well as flashing the flashable zip provided.

Are you running a Sense rom? If so, the boot animations are located in System-Customize-Resource. There are two that you need to replace, one for booting up, vzw_bootup.zip, and one for shutting down, hTC_downamination.zip.

Hmm... I did this and for some reason the boot animation wasn't replaced but the down animation works fine. Side note, does the boot sound in that folder play for anyone else?
HTC One s-off
On the stock HTC ROM, to change the boot animation, you have to change two files in 'system/customize/resource/' : "htc_bootup_one.zip" and "vzw_bootup.zip" (capitalization matters). They both have to be replaced with fully functional boot animations. When I changed mine, it wouldn't work if I just changed one or the other, I had to change both.
On the stock HTC ROM, to change your down animation, you have to replace "hTC_downanimation.zip" (capitalization matters) in '/system/customize/resource/' with a functioning down animation.
On custom ROMS, you have to look to find where it's at. Sometimes it's in 'system/media' named "bootanimation.zip", sometimes it's not. Remember, it has to be a functioning replacement, otherwise it will show the stock ANDROID boot animation.

Actually, you don't have to replace the htc_bootup_one.zip. You can rename it to .bak and replace or do the same to the vzw_bootup.zip and it will work. I actually removed my htc_bootup_one.zip and replaced the vzw one and everything works fine. Probably helps that the boot up animation I use was made for the One variants that don't have anything to do with Verizon

That's very odd. Now that I try it without the "htc_bootup_one.zip", it works, but it didn't when I originally replaced it. Very, very odd.
I grabbed a flashable boot animation (including audio) from the HTC One section and was finally able to get the animation to work after messing with the .xml file. Tried to throw the audio in with it and couldn't get it to work...I'm on Bonestock and noticed there wasn't any audio with the regular boot animation...could it be the Rom? Volume is up btw.
To get a better idea of what I did I'll include the tread. I wasn't able to flash, so I had to manually replace/rename the files in my system/customize/resource folder and then change the name for the boot animation in the .xml file. I tried to follow the steps to get the audio file included as well, but it just reverted to a basic android boot animation when I attempted that.

If I recall correctly, there is an option in the XML file that tells it not to play audio when it's not the first time you set up the phone, meaning it only plays on initial setup. You need to change that setting to play every time. I don't want audio on my boot animations, so I leave it alone.

Add this code to the XML file.
Code:
audio="/system/customize/resource/MP3_file_name_here.mp3"
This is assuming the sound you want is located in the 'resource' folder. If not, give the correct path and filename. Hope this works for you.
