[Q] Wifi networks notification popup - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

I'm using stock rooted AT&T Jellybean and, every time my wifi loses signal (like when I leave my home for example), a list of available wifi networks pops up. Going to Advanced Wifi Settings and disabling Network Notification has no impact on this, so I'm guessing it's some idiocy put in there by AT&T. Does anyone know how to get rid of this? It's really infuriating because the popup blocks the entire screen every single time I lose wifi signal. Thanks.

Other than flashing a custom ROM, I'm not sure :/

3G when connected to WiFi

On most Android Devices, when you connect to WiFi, your 3G disappears. This doesn't occur on my 2.2 Defy. Is this normal?
Mine does that too, but not completely. After the upgrade WiFi always disconnects when the phone sleeps (in 2.2.1 US the setting to force WiFi had gone away), and it takes a while after a turn-on for WiFi to be re-established, after which the 3G icon goes away. BUT, this is not the case right after reboot when for the 3G icon to go away I need to first toggle WiFi off and on.

That's the crux; that setting is absent in 2.2.1 (as I mention in the text you quoted)
Do you still have ability to select preferences in wifi calling -- if so, does that help over-ride 3G with wifi?

The short answer; yes, and no, the long; had to rename the app first, and the Calling Preferences is there and it was set to WiFi preferred.
So, it seems that the WiFi behavior is one of those things that still needs fixing in the 34.4.9 release.
Yes mine does it too. It did it on 2.1, and now 2.2.1. After about a half hour the 3G icon goes away. Doesn't bother me.
Mine wasn't doing this on 2.1, and yes, it bothers me. I'm on a limited data plan, so I have to make sure that most of my big downloads happen through WiFi.

It still uses Wi-Fi even though both icons are showing. I track my use with NetCounter from the Market, and "Data" is always 0 (zero) when I have both icons.

[HOW-TO] Get a Data Signal While Roaming

Background:
Ever since I've had this phone I couldn't get a data signal while roaming in areas where I knew one was available. Old phones would get data while roaming without a problem.
The Epic Touch would just give a notification saying "you have lost data connectivity" or something.
I understand certain Sprint roaming areas just plain don't have data available. This howto can not fix that.
What this howto does help you do is get a data signal while roaming in areas where a roaming data signal is available.
Credit:
This was apparently discovered by someone on the sprint forums, and I found a reference to it on the Android Central forums, so I do not know who credit goes to for discovering this.
What to Do:
It's best if you are in a roaming-only area to test this, or if you can force roaming. You'll also need to be on the stock kernel (rooted is fine) so you have the ability to update your Profile.
Let's do that now. Go to the Settings menu and tap About Phone - system updates - update profile and wait for it to complete, then tap ok.
From the home screen, tap Menu - Settings - Wireless and Networks - Roaming - Roaming Settings.
Un-check all options here (voice and data for both domestic and international)
With no boxes checked, tap the "Data" box under domestic roaming. Tap only this one, not voice.
You will get a box asking you to confirm. Click yes. This will then automatically enable voice as well.
Another pop up with a red box will ask if you really want to use data while roaming. At this point you can tell it to never ask again and click Roam.
Now you can use data while roaming where it's available!
Update:
after trying this multiple times to verify it works, occasionally the final pop-up with the red box disappears before you can read it. I was able to long press the home button to show recent apps, then tap the "Data Roaming Guard" app. Then I could tap Roam.
This is critical for me as sometimes I am in roaming areas for work and I need internet and this phone is the only access I have. Now I can use it!
Report back with any corrections or feedback. Mileage may vary.
I don't know if it's necessary to update the profile. I have that step in there because that is the sequence I used. If you try it without updating the profile, let me know. This would allow people on a custom kernel to do this too.
I spent an hour and a half with Sprint yesterday on the phone trying to resolve this. They turned me over to new reps three times (including to the international support department) each one not aware of my issue so I'd have to explain everything again.
Finally I started digging on the web and found the tip on AC. Took me 2 minutes.
DOH! Stupid Tapatalk.
Mods, please move to General. Didn't mean to start this in development.
Thanks for sharing this. I will try this out.

I have the same issues. My girlfriend has an EVO and she will have data while roaming, and I wont. Even if were right next to each other.
Thanks, this worked great for me & did not have to update profile. I am on stock rooted deodexed rom.
Worked for me! Thanks, that was very annoying!
thanks! now i can play wwf at work lol
I did this awhile back when I saw it on the AC forums. I also read this phone cannot roam on PCS networks because of a limitation in the radio so there still may be times it won't roam when other phones will.
Greetings All!
I was able to make roaming calls before; but I followed these instructions and now I can use roaming data as well. Fortunately Atlanta is a pretty good 4G metro area so I rarely need to use roaming data. Usually either 3G or 4G is available. Nonetheless it's nice to have the option.
FYI I forced roaming by using the Roam Control app and have verified that for the first time with this phone I have a nonzero "Sprint 3G Data Roaming" entry in the detailed usage screen on the Sprint website.
Many thanks!
Cheers, Henri
Ok, glad this is working for people! I know it was the biggest gripe I had about the phone by far.

Agreed. And such a simple solution. Thanks again.

[Q] internet problems help?

Anyone have a ideal why this is happening? When I am on the Internet 3g sometimes 4g depending on where I am in my house. My Internet dies, I see the 3g icon sometimes the right arrow (up green) but not the left arrow (down orange) under the 3g when Internet dies. So I have to do sometimes is to open a new Window, Even to kick start my youtube app. I have the bookmark Google page. I have to open Google page in a new window to kick the Internet going again, then go back to the window I was trying to open that can't find to open, to get the Internet working again. This kinda started maybe two ago, oh note to add they started with my 4g couple weeks ago in my area, not full. So maybe something to with the towers? Any suggestions will help and thank you all developers for all time,
A little about my phone:
1. Not rooted
2. All My poxxy are all at 0.0.0 etc. -did it months ago, right 0 at the rights spots.
3. My back cover that iam using don't have anything nfc antenna on it, iam sure it dont matter.
4. uag case
5. Setting in settings is on mobile its on cdma/lte I did automatic nothing changed
Thanks again
if they're working on the towers, not uncommon to have network issues.
To get your internet back, just go into airphone mode, and then turn it off. The phone will reconnect.
If it's that bad and inconsistent, you may be able to complain and get Sprint to get you one of those AirWaves thing to let you use your internet to support your phone on the network.

Drop In Network

Hello everyone,
Do you experience a drop in network when talking on the phone? I notice I loose LTE when talking on the phone and sometimes even loose data completely. It is so odd that today I realize it only happens during calls.
Any fix? I've done hard reset so that's not an option lol... And no I'm not using a custom room, all things stock with xpose. Running tweak, greenify and unbounce. And it is not unbounce because when disable still happens
You always lose LTE data connections when on any voice calls until T-Mobile releases the VoLTE update for the G3 and also your market. Till then, the phone will drop down to 4G and should still be able to use data connections while on a voice call, albeit slower.
Also, to force the G3 back into LTE after a voice call, just enable Airplane Mode and then disable it and the G3 should connect back to the LTE network, much faster than waiting for the phone to connect to LTE on its own after hanging up.

Difference between Smart Switch and Wifi Calling....and performance questions

I've read (and THINK I understand) what smart switch is supposed to do (going all the way back to the Note4.
And it seems like the complete opposite of what wifi calling does.
Anyone care to explain the difference or real reasons one is used over the other?
Also on a related note, in the developer options category there is an option to turn on "Aggressive Wi-Fi cell h.."
With the explanation "switch from wifi to mobile networks more quickly when wifi signal is weak"
Kind of self explanatory and my question would be real work use. If you have unlimited data, any reason you would NOT want to check this?
Unless this just sounds great, but doesn't work well......
Thoughts?

Smart switch imports the data from your old phone when you switch to a Samsung phone; WiFi calling routes voice traffic over WiFi when available.
Sorry, I meant to say Smart NETWORK Switch. It says your phone will be connected to a mobile network if Wifi becomes unstable.
And Wi-fi calling kinda of says the exact opposite. If mobile becomes unstable, it will switch to Wifi......
Anyone?
Many times.. even when the wifi signal is weak, as long as wifi is turned on, the phone will remain connected to it. This especially happens when you are just pulling out of your house and you are trying to get to google maps for directions or something.. but because the phone is still connected to your home wifi, it'll remain so and since the connection is weak, you won't be able to browse or anything and google maps may say "no network connection".
I believe what Smart Network Switch does, is that in such cases, it'll immediately switch to mobile data.

This happens to me every morning in my driveway trying to route Waze. I get a weak wifi signal that the phone hangs onto and I get a no network error from Waze.
