My company now requires the encrypt device policy for exchange, so I went ahead encrypted the device while running CM10. The encryption succeeded, but every time the screen timed out, it would turn off the device instead of just turn off the screen (CM10 bug?) - didn't want to have to deal with having to cold boot the device every time I want to do something, not to mention the phone being off :/
So I did a nandroid restore to my last known state and now I get prompted for the unencrypt password. However, the password doesn't work. Probably because the password file was deleted, but the system and data partitions are still encrypted.
I've tried doing a full wipe in TWRP and flashing multiple ROMs. I've also tried ODIN flashing root66 and OTA JB 4.1.1 with no success. It still asks for the unencrypt password. I suspect the only way to fix this is to completely re-create the system and data partitions.
If anyone knows how to accomplish this, I'd be grateful because I have a soft brick right now (i.e. can't get past unencrypt password prompt with any ROM)

I have re-flashed multiple times trying the ROM I was on as well as several others without successes. They flash fine, but when the phone boots it prompts for an unencrypt password, which I don't have. I've gone as far as going a complete data wipe and when I flash again it prompts for a password.
I've tried countless factory resets without success. What is xo?
have you tried formatting the sdcard?
You might have to odin back to stock

I tried everything:
- format SD card
- factory reset
- complete wipe with TWRP
- flashed multiple different ROMs (4.1.1 and 4.2.1)
- ODIN back to stock
- ODIN to root66
- holy water...
It still asks for an unencrpyt password - I'm ready to accidently destroy it so i can make use of the protection I pay for...
From what I'm able to gather from searching the webs, none of the above recreate the system and data partitions which are encrypted - but the encryption file is gone because of a flash or wipe or whatever and there is no way to unencrypt them now without recreating them. I'm probably wrong, but that's where I am...

I have tried to flash 5 different roms that are known to work and flash right but they all do the same thing on my phone which is hang at the Samsung screen and not boot. Im using the TWRP recovery with exfat support from the dev section. This is what ive tried....
Ive tried flashing from both internal and external sd . I never ever never dirty flash. I always wipe cache, dalvick, factory reset, and format system every time times 3.
Anyone have a clue why I cant flash anything?
Edit... I can restore nanandroid backups but cannot flash anything

Did you say "format system"? You don't need to do that. That will wipe your entire OS. When you flash a ROM, it already wipes and replaces the system, so there's no need to format it beforehand. If you're doing it AFTER, then that's your problem. You SHOULD do the wipe cache, wipe Dalvik and factory reset after flashing though.

This is usually what I do when I flash a rom...
1. Wipe cache times 3
2. Wipe dalvick times 3
3. Factory reset times 3
4. Flash rom
5. Wipe cache
6. Wipe dalvick
7. Factory reset...
Thats my normal way I flash any rom even if the dev says just wipe caches. I dont never dirty flash...
Normally I dont format system because it should do that when you flash any rom if the updater script is wrote right. I just listed the things I tried so everyone would know and I thought well I tried everything else so I tried to format system just to see if it would work.
Im really starting to wonder if its the twrp Im using with the exfat support. Its not the official one on gooim its one a dev modded to work with exfat. And that would make sense but I cant flash from internal storage either but I can restore a nan backup from internal or external. ..

Okay then. I read "format system every time" so I was worried about that. I didn't notice that you have 1400+ posts, which implies that you have some experience.
Yes, trying a different recovery will help narrow down the problem (or fix it). Did you read through the status messages after flashing to make sure that everything looked okay?
Also, how long do you wait at the Samsung logo after flashing? Sometimes it takes a while (I think it took 10 minutes on my Tab 2 before - S3 is faster though).

Yea I have a little knowledge and usually dont ask questions cause normally i can figure it out on my own but this has me stumped.
I got no errors and twrp said flash successful every time. Wait time normally I give it 10 minutes but got aggravated last night and set the phone down and left there for 30 minutes or so and still stuck. And every rom ive tried has been a one known to boot with no problems. I read the threads to be sure.
Im gonna try flashing the twrp thru gooim when I get home just to see and if that dont work im gonna try cwm just to eliminate the recovery but I got a gut feeling its the recovery. I would like to get it fixed soon because im working on building a rom and cant flash it to test it.

Just to let everyone know in case anyone else ever has this issue I did finally flash a couple of roms. The only thing I can figure out is I was using rom manager to boot into recovery instead of the three button combo. Shortcuts never work when doing this kinda stuff and I should have known better
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
I use ROM Manager to boot into recovery all the time, never had any issues with it (I don't like mashing the keys too frequently, I ran into issues with a stuck power button a bunch of times on my S2 Skyrocket and I assume it was from doing button combos).
If you run into further issues I'd recommend backing everything up to a pc, then do a full wipe, then format your internal and external sd cards in cwm to get rid of any bad data that might be causing this, and then get into download mode and use Odin to go back to stock (has to be Odin of course since formatting the sd cards would remove any roms or backups saved there).
This has worked for me when I've had weird, unexplainable things going on. It's a pain in the butt, but can be worth it if it makes things work properly.
PS -- This was seanz's suggested method for dealing with strange issues on the sr, as I'm sure you recall.

Thanks bud. I use Odin to go back stock and it didn't help but I didn't format the cards either though. Im using twrp and never had any issues with it but the official version dont support exfat. Has cwm started supporting exfat yet? Oh and can you fix cwm where it dont do blobs. They take up way to much room....

I flashed MOAR 2.3 and update. I was playing around with my phone and decided to encrypt my device. I was having problems and I shut off my phone since it wasnt responding. Upon rebooting, I was prompted to factory reset since encryption failed. I did so, and it gave me the same problem... Here is what I've tried thus far
-wipe cache and dalvik
-factory reset
-restore previous backup (failed)
-odin to stock and factory reset
-reflash zip
-still failed
I am able to access download and recovery. but can't get past annoying prompt. Any ideas. Just an FYI I have Sprint Total Equipment Protection and was wondering if I can claim this as lost or i can destroy it beyond repair so I can get a replacement without them checking if it was rooted.
THANK YOU
Ok first, go into recovery and make a backup as is. Then download your rom again, or reflash if you have it, and flash with a full wipe (system, factory reset (aka data), cache, and dalvik)
Now try to see if it boots up. If it does, you can go into recovery and advanced restore your data.
There was someone else on here who had gotten stuck with encryption when trying to flash something. His thread might be a good place to start... I don't have the link with me, but search q&a for encryption or encrypted.
If I recall correctly, he had to Odin back to stock recovery. I could be wrong, though, it was a little while ago, and I was just reading through the thread, not actively participating in it.
Hope you can get your phone fixed!

Phone was rooted and running CM10.2 nightlies just fine. I had to encrypt my phone for work email, no issues. I now want to change ROM's to a TW because of WiFi Calling.
So here is what I did:
- I did a TWRP (2.6.3.1) backup before starting
- Advanced Wipe Dalvik/Cache/System/Data/Internal Storage as well as Format Data to remove encryption
- Downloaded SWARMROM, flashed ROM, Modem, SuperSU.
Flash went good, rebooted with T-Mo splash and boot animation. Before I can do anything, I get a prompt to "Enter your PIN or password to use the encrypted device memory". My old password doesn't work and it won't let me in. All I can access is Emergency Call.
I have even formatted my external drive thinking it might be what is still encrypted, re-ran the install process, but same result.
I did trip the KNOX counter somehow, if that matters.
Any advice?
Go back into recovery and restore your backup, reboot and remove encryption, use titanium backup for app data

The backup doesn't have encryption. But there is somewhere on the phone that a Stock ROM is detecting encryption from. I can go to any Cyanogenmod 10.2 ROM, but not a Stock or even OMNI.
Finally got it.
ODIN root66 Stock ROM, reboot to encrypted error. Boot into factory recovery and wipe/factory reset, then wiped cache for good measure. Rebooted and it came up without the encryption prompt. Let the WiFi Calling commence.

You saved my arse today, THANK YOU! I have been out of the flashing game for some time now so I was getting stuck when I had the same issue as you, but thankfully, now it's back to normal, phew!
Hello all,
My S3 currently has TWRP 2.7.0.1 recovery and CM11 installed. It was also previously encrypted.
Recently the gapps on my S3 have completely stopped working. New accounts cannot be added and the programs immediately crash upon starting. Deleting the app-data for these has had no effect.
While I can decrypt the phone for regular use, I cannot do the same in recovery to reinstall gapps. Consequentially, it appears that the best option would be to wipe out everything to get rid of the encryption. Unfortunately, it seems that you cannot flash a new ROM over an encrypted partition via recovery. I have reached the conclusion that Odin should be used to reformat everything.
Is this a correct understanding? And how would I go about doing this safely?
First, backup everything you can. Then try a factory reset. If this doesnt help, choose format data from recovery. (Formatting /data will wipe the internal sd card).
If all else fails, then go for the odin flash. From what I have seen though the factory reset or format should be sufficient.
Be very careful using Odin of you have a 4.3 or newer bootloader. You don't want to flash an incorrect modern or bootloader which can brick your phone.
Very true, always be careful of this. I dont usually mention it for Odin flashes though because Odin will recognize the versions and will refuse to flash. Its usually flashing via recovery that is the most dangerous in my experience. (But I have seen odin flashes go bad too, its kind of rare, but always be careful with what youre doing.)
Hello!
Yesterday I installed Resurrection Remix Rom and it worked great. So I configured everything to my needs including setting the security to ask for a pattern on Restart. So everything is encrypted.
After a reboot the phone kept crashing and I tried to go back to my old system. Somehow I managed to set the security to none so I can revert to my old system. I then rebooted to Recovery but in Recovery it asked me for a password. I never set a password so I don’t know what to insert in here. I tried various stuff but nothing worked. I also can’t reboot back into the system without a password. It looks like my phone is still encrypted.
Is there any way how I can decrypt my files?
Can i "convert" my old pattern into a password and this will decrypt everything?
And if I am ok with losing my data, how can I just wipe everything and install a new rom?
Thank you for your help!
easiest way to delete all your data is via twrp, select everything in twrp wipe section and execute. your phone will be completely empty now. reconnect your phone to your pc and copy paste the rom and gapps and flash.

I was in TWRP and tried to Wipe just the Data and Cache partitions but it told me that it was unable to mount storage.
I thinkt that since don't know the password i don't have permission to mount partitions.

Have you reflashing the stock recovery and doing a factory reset? After that you can reflash twrp and delete data. You can try if that works.

I will try to flash the stock recovery when i get home.

I read it on xda that this process resolves the issue and yes it has to be done via fastboot in bootloader mode. Stock recovery is available on oneplus's website.

I just flased the stock recovery via fastboot and made a factory reset.
After that I could reboot back into the system without any security question.
Sadly, all data are gone, meaning it did also wipe the internal storage partition. This is a pity but I'm really glad to have my phone back.

enter your PIN - it should work.
