right hiya,
I have a sony ericsson xperia arc s running android 4.04 and my carrier is 3 but I am locked to Tesco mobile (no modifications otherwise)
so recently I have been considering whether or not to put cyanogenmod 10 or 10.1 onto my phone, but currently do not have enough faith in my abilities and so have a few questions and stuffs :good:
so first off I haven't of yet installed any custom things onto my phone and have no experience doing so. I roughly know the processes involved and just about know how to do it but I am scared of bricking/destroying my phone.
soooo
1. how easy is it to brick your phone ( no sarcasm please) as in do you have to be a bit special to do it, or can it happen to anyone easily
2. cm10/10.1 reviews, even better is a review of that running on the arc s
3. known bugs with cm 10/10.1
4. whether or not I should go for it
5. moral counciling on the subject
6. a quick tutorial
7. response to any other questions I may have.
thanks a bunch in advance guys!
(also I am very new to the site so let me know if I am posting in the wrong place, thanks)

If you can read and follow tutorials step by step then there is no way you can brick your phone. Simply if you are not sure about something then DON'T DO THIS.

Its so good I still cant believe it. Only real downside is a camera because its really ****ty compared to stock one.

Also:
"1. Enter *#*#7378423#*#* on your phone dialer to access the service menu.
2. Go to Service info > Configuration > Rooting Status. Check if Bootloader unlock allowed says Yes"
You you've got "No" then I don't think you can open your bootloader so only custom ROMs you can flash are stock based ones.
If "Yes" then go to http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/ and follow tutorial.
If you couldn't find something or if you don't understand some steps then please don't start another thread just ask in here or PM me but keep in mind that I wont reply instantly.
Firstly - since you're carrier locked - have you checked that your bootloader unlock status = YES? Since CM10/10.1 both require unlocked bootloader.

If your bootloader unlocked status is NO you'll have to contact alejandrissimo (if I spelt it right) for a paid remote unlocking service.

thanks
My bootloader is available to be unlocked and I have a few other questions.
1. Is there any way to revert back to my old Rom if I wanted.to.
2. Do you think the camera issue and the others will be fixed
3. Is this an easy process to complete ( romming ) or does it take a reasonable amount if skill because I am a complete noob
1. Yes - it's called a nandroid backup, and we recommend you back up every time before flashing anything so if you screw up you can always retire the backup (providing, of course, you can boot into recovery, failing which you've to flash a stock ftf file which will reset everything to factory settings including root.) Kernels still have to be flashed on a computer though, so you can't restore any nandroid backup, it has to be compatible with the kernel. So far, there's no way of flashing kernels on SE phones.
2. Nope don't think so.
3. Not if you read the OP, do research beforehand and especially important: read the general section. There's a lot of info there on installing ROMs/rooting/bootloader unlocking etc etc etc
Sent from my LT18i using xda premium - press thanks if I helped.
again
sorry to be so nooby :fingers-crossed:
is there any app I can use to fix the camera
does cwm just backup my boot image or does that also back up my user files
does nandroid do the same
and also if you guys have successfully installed 10 or 10.1 on your device is there definitive set up process you could send me a link to that you know for a fact works that you may have used
For cm10,1 you can use ucam from the play store to fix the camera orientation. No idea about cm10 I havent used it
cwm creates nandroid backups which backup the whole ROM but not the boot.img (kernel)
yep standard installation procedure for all ROMs:
1) flash kernel (if applicable)
2) reboot into recovery (power+vol down)
3) wipe data
4) wipe cache
5) advanced > wipe dalvik cache
6) mounts and storage > format system, this is optional but I do it just to make sure
7) install ROM
8) reboot into system

Picture quality depends on camera drivers which are part of ROM so no you cant fix it with an app. We can only hope for sony to release source for camera stuff so FXP team can port it to CM.

CWM is custom recovery that can flash zip files and create nandroid backups. Nandroid backup is a backup of all system and user files excluding a kernel.

Start by opening your bootloader then download CyanogenMod ROM file for your phone. Copy zip file on your phones sd card, flash kernel then boot into CWM wipe all and flash zip file.
Sorry - meant to say that there's no way of flashing kernels on SE phones from the phone itself! Thanks for correcting!

I've already answered your first question. Do you even read replies? CWM backs up everything except for a kernel. CWM backup is a complete backup of all your system files and apps with all settings and stuff. You can delete everything and then restore your phone to a perfect state with this backup.
Don't look for a CM10.1 for Arc s because there is no official CM built for this version so everything you will find is unstable half baked cluster**** of unstable ****.
Start by unlocking bootloader if its already done then go to https://sites.google.com/site/projectfreexperia/download/cyanogen-mod-10 and download FXP 206 for ANZU because its a codename for arc. When done go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1508585 and read about flashing custom kernels. When flashed turn on your phone and repeatedly pres volume button to enter recovery, wipe all and then choose install zip from sdcard highlight ROM file then install and you are done.
CWM backs up everything on your ROM including your apps and settings etc. So if you restore from CWM the backup would be exactly as where you'd left it - as in if you sent Ben 3 messages, those messages will still be there after a restore. If you're logged into your Twitter account, you'll still be logged into your Twitter account. All the accounts you've linked to will still be there including your Google account.
CWM does not backup kernel though. That is a different story.
As for CM10.1 yes it is an unstable nightly version but IMO it is good enough for daily use. CM10 would be more stable but it is entirely up to you - the installation procedure is still the same

I'm sure someone can give a more in depth explanation - A kernel is like the "heart" of the phone, if you interpret it that way. It allows the ROM to run. Without the kernel the ROM will not boot.
Yep - you need a 4.2 kernel to run 4.2 ROMs. Likewise, stock-based ROMs require stock based kernels and CM based ROMs require CM based kernels. Usually the thread title states if the kernel is stock or cm based but if it doesn't look in the OP

is flashing a kernel just as easy as anything else
most of the instructions I have found look something like this
http://droidxda.blogspot.co.uk/2012/12/romarcsjb421wipunofficial-cyanogenmod_18.html
they mention fastboot for cyanogen (what is this) and nothing about a new kernel. is that because they expect you to know it or because you don't need to?
I'd recommend new users to use flashtool - its easier.
Extract kernel to place of your choice. Start flashtool, connect phone in fastboot mode (menu key+plug USB, do NOT switch phone on), press the lightning icon on flashtool and select fastboot mode.
Then select "select kernel to flash" there will be a pop up. Navigate to the directory with your kernel and click on it. It will flash automatically
And yes they did - it usually says flash boot.img or flash kernel. Boot.img=kernel

Ok so this looks good.so what If I wanted to go back onto cwm click restore and go back to my stock ice would I have to flash a new kernel and if so where would I find it.

This is for those times when you want to change your recovery but don't have access to a desktop. You need to already have a custom recovery installed otherwise you can't flash the zip (duh!).
Here are some common recoveries in flashable form:
Stock_Optimus_V_Recovery.zip
aospCWMod-VM670-20110531_Recovery.zip
CWM_3.0.2.4_Recovery.zip
Thunderc-v-1.2.0-GNM_Recovery.zip
Xionia_CWMA_12518.4_VM_Recovery.zip
Xionia_CWMA_12518.4_Recovery.zip (Optimus S)
Xionia_CWMA_12518.6_Recovery.zip (Optimus S)
You don't need to do anything special for these. Flash them and your recovery will be changed.
If you want to flash a recovery not listed above using your current recovery, use the following directions:
Make sure your recovery image is not corrupt before using this.
Rename your recovery of choice to vrecovery.img
Place vrecovery.img in the root of your micro SD card
Place Flash_vrecovery.zip anywhere on the micro SD card
Reboot into your custom recovery and flash the zip
Enjoy!
This is fantastic! Thank you.
Wicked Love it! Thanks Dude
is there a way to flash a custom recovery from the stock recovery, my brother flashed the wrong clockwork on his optimus v and now we can't install roms and it currently doesn't have a rom on it. Not sure if you're comfortable adding it to the list yet, but the latest recovery used with ROM Manager, ClockworkMod 3.2xx (not sure of the final digits), does work on the Optimus V now, thanks to koush.

I use the AOSP ROM (dead rom). For some reason, all the IHO ROMS keep rebooting me after installing all my apps. I also use the Xionia recovery and the Xionia 010-anykernel kernel. With that kernel though, your home key and menu key will be switched, but well worth it.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but all the links for the recoveries in the first post are dead.

that's a lot of formatting in your post ;p
on the quick side:
so, my kitkat rom thread and twrp (both in my signature) still have live links to Google drive.
but...
kitkat pretty much requires setting up a sacrificial sd card with that twrp, which you can't remove from the phone. higher speed is better for the card.
that twrp has a kernel which reverses system and userdata, so even if you put it in internal mode, you have to modify updater-scripts to swap all mentions of system and userdata for it to work. with anything I didn't build, like anything pre-kitkat.
I have harmonia (important to set up the phone for activation) but if it's like my Evo 3d, you'll have to manually set the date back to 2019 or whenever the security certificate expired to get the activation app too connect or it'll just error out.
I also have a zip of harmonia I "fixed" to work with that twrp.
somewhere I also have bobzhome GB. and I think a reversed zip of that too.
I might even have older custom recoveries.
if you search around Google you might find the bobzhome rom stashed away downloadable, I was still able to grab it within the last year.
after a while I'll dig and upload stuff to my gdrive.
it sucks that Android file host deleted all my OV files though. I had a lot there.

HELP!!
I tried to flash the overclocked kernel and now Im stuck in a bootloop and can't load recovery or be recognized in fastboot usb. It seems like I may have bricked my phone any suggestions. PLEASE HELP
update - I fixed it lol almost thought my dinc 2 was a brick
I may be in the same situation and would like to know how you solved your problem.
I rooted successfully and was running the Gingersense rom with the stock kernel. I wanted to OC a kernel so I downloaded one that I think was intended to run with MIUI. I made a backup so I figured if the kernel didn't work I could always go back.
After installing the new kernel I went into a boot loop. I pulled the battery, got into recovery and tried to restore a backup, but now I freeze on the HTC screen. I've tried three different backups and none of them work -- all freeze on the HTC screen.
I am becoming desperate. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Have you tried wiping everything (including /system under "mounts and storage") before restoring the backup? Or tried flashing a different rom? Probably happened because the kernels for AOSP roms and sense roms aren't interchangeable. I would think that restoring a backup would rewrite the boot partition though, which should fix it..
I wiped everything (did data wipe/factory resets as well as wiping everything individually, several times) and could never get any of my backups to work.
I finally copied CM7.1 beta onto the SD card and flashed that (after first having to scrounge to find a card reader and computer that would read an SDHC card) and that worked.
I tried restoring one of my previous backups over CM7.1 (with and without wiping) and went back to freezing on the HTC screen again on each one of them. Don't understand that, since everything was working fine when those backups were made.
Anyway, now I'm using CM7.1 and have a working phone again.
Thanks for your work on this. Much appreciated for helping to realize my dream of a fully-rooted Inc2.
/bow
Ihave the same issues with backup not restoring and getting the white screen. Might need a new SD card.

Reboot into CWM and flash the nandroid I hope you made before doing ANYTHING. If you didn't make a nandroid, restore a titanium backup or start re downloading the apps you had installed.
After your done, backup your apps with titanium backup and make a nandroid backup as well.
Also I'm curious to what rom you tried to flash and the settings you uses when flashing as I might be able to help you flash it correctly.
Cheers

welll thanx for the info im thinking since im a noob at this i tried to install 3.0.5 darkforest rom but it might have been the wrong one becuz there was a 3.1.0 as well im i wiped sd card before installing rom too i waited about 30 mins for phone to boot but wouldnt boot at all
well darforest 3.0.5 is what i installed but i may have confused it with the 3.1.0 too grrrrrr also you said to take out battery and search R800 well i tried that and it wouldnt work grrr
Make sure you got the darkforest 3.0.5. You can get it OTA here. Also make sure ypu untick the options that say GSM only and also untick the option that says "format /system"
Type this into the dialer: *#06#*
If it comes back with a MEID you have a R800x. If it comes back with a IMED you have a R800i. Also if you are on Verizion in the US then you have a R800x

All of these don't need the unlocked bootloader. COLA and IT-ROM are nandroid backups that must be placed in the folder /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup. The downloaded files need to be extracted into seperate folders. Eg: .../backup/cola6 or .../backup/IT-ROM. The files can be flashed through the recovery option in CWM.
As for darkforest rom, it needs to be downloaded, and the zip file must be put into the root of the sdcard. From there it can be flashed through the option in CWM to select a zip file to flash.
Darkforest rom also uses the AROMA installer (touch screen capible rom installer) which is fantastic because it makes installing and selecting instalation options incredibly easy.
Also what is this wiki? I would love a link to this.
Cheers

Aroma installer is in the darkforest rom zip. It was that installer wen you flashed it.
Okay the imei means you could unlock your bootloader if you wanted to. It also means you have the r800i.
To flash darkforest rom, download it via darkforest ota (see previous post), move it to the root of the sdcard with astro or es file manager. DO NOT UNZIP! Go into CWM, wipe the cache partition, then find the darkforest rom zip,and flash it. When the installer comes up, UNTICK the option that says "format /system" then press install. After it is finished SAVE THE LOGS. Then try rebooting and tell me what happened

ok kool ill do that now and im glad i have the r800i now i know a lil bit
Yeah us R800x users have to pay to have our bootloader unlocked and the dev has to be on.his computer to do it. Oh well.
Let me know how flashing goes incase something pops up that's bad.
Also the sony ericsson logo that pops up that has the green thing above it is the boot animation. It will be there for like 5 min. It just takes forever on the first boot for some reason.
Cheers

hey ive really new to the world of android after moving from iphone and i need help. ive managed to root my phone have clockworkrecovery installed and working, but the problem comes when i try to install the liquidsmooth rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1911009) i clear everything but when i go to install the first part i get a status aborted status 7, please help any advice would be useful
What version of CWM do you have?
EDIT - After looking through the development thread for the ROM (which i'm going to assume you didn't) i found several mentions of your issue. The ROM devs confirmed my suspicion that the problem lies most likely in an outdated CWM recovery. Download Clockwork Rom Manager from the market and install the latest recovery version for your device, i'm going to assume its the AT&T SG3 but this is a guess since you didn't say what device you are using. Once the recovery is installed try flashing again. I'm going to make another guess and say you probably dont have a working OS on your phone either, if this is true you have 2 choices...you can either download the recovery from here CWM 6.0.1.2: http://db.tt/QHZZqecH and copy it to an external sd card and flash it from the the existing recovery OR you will have to flash a different rom that will boot up to get you to the market.
P.S. - In the future try to provide as much information as possible to help out whoever may be trying to help you. What phone you have, what rom you are on if any, what you have attempted in effort to fix the problem. The more info you give the easier it will be for someone to help you, and improve your chances of getting it fixed quickly.

Also, I know you're new around here but this kind of stuff go in Q&A. this being said, have fun flashing ROMs and kernels and be careful with what you flash. I dont think Bricking a 600$ device is so funny.

I would have to agree with liltitiz once you get the rom going and use TWRP, the interface is much easier to use, it includes a built in file manager as well as on screen keyboard support for naming backups as you run them.

Lets start at the top, can you boot your phone or are you stuck with no OS currently? I'm gonna be here for a while so check back often and we can get this sorted out tonight.

Ok, go ahead to the google play store and search for clockwork rom manager, download this and install it. Once inside the app the top button will ask you to choose your device to install the latest recovery image, of course you are looking form Samsung Galaxy S3 AT&T. Once the download is complete it will automatically install, at this point you can click the reboot into recovery button and follow the OP for installing the ROM.
ROM manager for cwm recovery. You need to pay if you want touche recovery.
Or use the first method from my other post. Using goo manager from the play store to get twrp recovery. Which I prefer over cwm touch.
Either way are easy and depends only on what recovery you want

Yup, one at a time. No offense but two sets of instructions could be confusing to a new user. Get a working phone first, then go for the tweaks and experiment....a little at a time and carefully.
Haven't heard from him (or her) in a while, hope they are too busy checking our their sweet new ROM to let me know if they got it working
Let's hope so. One.....drawback....I guess in android is that there is usually 7 different ways to get to the same end result and that's what confuses most new users.....too many options :what:

Drawback or exactly the point depending on how you look at it i suppose. Thats the beauty and challenge of open source, which is why reading and understanding what you are getting into is emphasized so much....although seemingly hopelessly sometimes.

Most custom aosp based ROM you need to flash gapps usually found in the op of the ROM thread.
Happy New Year
First attempt at custom ROM, heard great things about All Star Rom - going straight for the v6! Unless told not to ... LOL
Have a rooted device, with latest TWRP recovery 2.3.3.1-hercules .tar flashed.
Have v6 and All-Star 4.2 custom gapps downloaded.
Copy of instructions for reference sake:
TWRP recovery recommended!
- wipe data
- wipe system
-(Use Darkside Super wipe if still on cwm 5.0.2.7 or below)
- flash rom
- flash All-Star 4.2 gapps
- wipe cache/ dalvik cache.
- reboot and wait 10 mins
- reboot and wait 1 minute
- Grant Superuser permissions for Switchme
- set up device.
- Initiate the CPU sleeper app
- (Highly Recommended) ENJOY!
Booting into TWRP recovery,
I don't specifically have a "wipe data" option, I want to be very thorough here.
Under "Wipe" I have Cache, Dalvik Cache, Factory Reset, ... and System.
Quick answer? Thanks.
Hey, happy new years justaguy705. Nice to see you asking questions again.
To answer your question, the option where you see "Factory Reset" is the exact same as "Wipe data". Cheers!

Unless you have a recovery system already. You will need a computer to install a recovery system such as TWRP 2.3.3.0 to your phone through Odin (PC application).
Yes it is. I rarely use or never use computer now.

Doesn't being rooted means he rooted himself via a recovery, unless he flashed stock rom again. In which it would wipe his recovery.

He may have a custom recovery file, but from what I know to install the latest and recommended TWRP recovery you would need to have a computer to flash it. But you are free to explain to him with your steps to flashing without a computer.

Make sure your phone is off and not connected to a USB cable. Press and hold the "volume up/volume down" keys and then press the power button until you feel a vibrate and the screen turns on. After that you should be in recovery mode and it will say the version you are using. If you have a CWM recovery version greater than 6.0 you should be able to flash a ROM through your phone.

You could use Mobile Odin to flash TWRP or CWM but Mobile Odin doesn't have all the features that regular Odin does.

To flash TWRP on to your phone and you still do not have access to a computer, you can try using the Mobile Odin app on the Play store as android88 had mentioned above (however, the app is around $5.00 if you're willing to purchase it). Otherwise, flashing the recovery system through Odin using a computer is the way to do it.
