[Q] Total confusion regarding rooting Galaxy S3 (FIDO) - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Carrier: Fido
Phone: Samsung Galaxy SIII
Model: SGH-I747M
Baseband: I747MVLDLK4
Computer OS: Linux Mint 13
** I do have Virtualbox installed and can run Windows 7 environment.
I'm really really really confused and am hoping someone hear can point me in the right direction. The thing is that I'm not really interested in changing ROMs (at least not yet). The reason I want to root my phone is because I want to install Titanium as I read somewhere that it will fix a bug which is causing my phone to delete a purchased app that I have installed (because it uses an account and is mounting the /mnt too late). Apparently it has something to do with where it is installing my app (LVSync).
Anyway... I would like to root my device but am totally baffled at how many files, versions and methods there are to do it and after reading various things (and a coupld of failed attempts with heimdall -- protocol not initialised) I am scared to try anything more before getting some assistance.
I found a guide on XDA http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426 that shows how to flash a FIDO ROM with root injected in on it. However, that will overwrite everything and wipe out the apps that I've installed and I would prefer not to do that. I would rather a method that will allow me to retain my settings/apps and then I can installed Titanium Backup to backup everything.
Could someone please point me in the right direction?

Hi!
If you do not want to overwrite your current Android system, then you may be interested in Chainfire's CF-Auto-Root method. The downside being you will trigger the custom ROM's flash counter, but this can be reset if you ever need to sent your device to repair. Please read all the first three posts -- at least -- of this topic before you start rooting.

I used the CF guide that you linked me to.
Question/Problem: I followed the guide exactly. However, when I clicked PDA it gave me the following message but did NOT reboot. It is still sitting in download mode:
Code:

<OSM> Leave CS..

<ID:0/004> File analysis..
<ID:0/004> SetupConnection..
What do I do? I'm afraid if I reboot it that I'll brick it at this point.

Disregard last post.
I re-did everything and it worked perfectly the second time.

Answering calls by middle button
Hello,
I've got Phoenix ROM v18.8, previous v15. Rom is awsome, exellent work etc. ... BUT on previous Rom i was able to answer calls by clicking middle button on note, simply checking it in settigs, it was usefoul because my case is like flip cover with screen on it, and is easy to answer calls. Now i only have option to reject calls by clicking power button.
How to enable answer calls clicking middle button?
I checked all settigs parameters also Wanam Xposed
Need some advice on doing some tweeks
Hey guys, How are you doing..?
I have few questions on how to do these things. Please help me if you are free. Thank you guys.
1. The Current home screen wallpaper is a wide one. It moves when I slide to next screen. Is is possible to have one like stock. A fixed wallpaper.
2. I play a online game (Wifi only) for 2 hrs continuously and my battery drains very soon in 1.5 hours. Is there anything I can do to this.
3. When i press back in settings or any screen, the home screen background flashes a second and returns to the place where I need to. Especially while playing videos the other part of the screen where the gap is (in portrait mode) the background wallpaper will be displayed. Is this a lag on loading or should I do anything to fix this.
Thanks for your time guys.
WiFi not working on note2 LTE version GT-N7105 after installing DN3v5 ROM
I installed DT3 ROM v5 on my note2 LTE version GT-N7105
Got that famous issue with WiFi not working.
And my question is: how to fix this on the GT-N7105 ?
- cause the method described at the forum in here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=47663390#post47663390) does not work in my case - both of those methods.
First of all I should mention that I have not found anywhere any note that these would work for the LTE version N7105 (only annotations that it works with n7100), but I also have not found a single annotation that would say that this would not - so I gave it a try.
Below I described shortly what I tried to do, and attached ODIN's message logs from each method.
1. I tried to apply Dr Ketan's fix via ODIN, but it would not work - once I pressed "start" it would start and after a short while finish with a red field "FAIL" message. Here is a complete log of messages for #1:

2. I also tried to update the bootloader to MJ5, as instructed in the same thread - but once I pressed "start" button, I would get stuck for a looong while at "Setup connection" and then "FAILED" as well. Here is a complete log of messages for #2:

Self reboot when connecting charger
Hello!
First of all, huge thanks to Tamira for this fantastic rom, and to all the peoples providing help here on xda.
Here's a problem that I couldn't find on any forum yet...
When powered off, my phone boot itself as soon as I plug the charger.
Very annoying when battery is empty, keeps on booting then turning off, booting again...
Here my specs:
Note 2 int gt7100
Phoenix rom 18.8
mj5 bootloader
Did full wipe with philz touch
Tried 2 clean intalls, same result.
Thanks for any advice!
PhoeniX rom 18,8

Well, You must use 2A charger because Yours has too low current stream, or charge it before it get 1% battery. If Your phone turn off because battery, and You dont have 2A charger, try to enter to bootloader menu when charging - it take much lower energy and phone shouldnt turn off.
whether the work it for SHV-E250S?
Problem in downloading
Tried downloading this rom 4 times. Every time it downloads approx 600 to 750 mb and then gives an error message that the server is not available !

s4 mini won't boot

I have a Samsung S4 Mini on the Verizon network (SCH-i435). I restarted my phone this morning and it took a much longer than usual to boot. My screen showed the Verizon logo for about 5-10 minutes and when the phone finally booted I was greeted with the utility to set up the phone (pick language, setup email, etc. etc.). I was confused because I had done this already a few months ago when I bought the phone. I skipped the steps and I was greeted with the stock home screen (all my custom shortcuts and widgets were gone). All my marketplace apps were still installed, but some of them had been reset (had to reconfigure waze, winamp, etc). My best guess is that there was an OTA update or some security patch that reset everything. Finally I got things running again the way I liked them. I was using my phone and suddenly it went dead. I tried to restart it but nothing showed on the screen. Oddly enough the phone just vibrates over and over again, but the screen remains black. No matter what I do I can't boot it. The only way I could stop it from vibrating was to pull out the battery. Is there any hope to recover this phone? Thanks.
Did you try to enter recovery mode?
Yes, I followed the instructions on the manufacturer site. I held down the home button, up volume, and powered the device on. A small bit of text appeared for a split second, it was so fast I couldn't read it. It disappeared and the screen went black and the same vibrate pattern started up again.
I got a video camera and managed to capture the text that was being displayed. Here is a screenshot...
It looks like...
MMC: mmc_read fail
Movinaand Checksum Confirmation Fail
Any hope of fixing this?
I asked for recovery cause it was easier to reset to factory the phone. If that's not working, i don't know if there's hope for it to enter download mode, for manual flashing with odin.
I'm able to get into download mode. Is there a ROM I can flash with? This S4 Mini is the Verizon phone so it is the SCH-i435, I didn't think there were any custom roms I could use with this phone.
Stock rom.
Try http://www.sammobile.com/firmware and see if your firmware is there.
Download this for KitKat: http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/download/31291/I435VRUBNE1_I435VZWBNE1_VZW.zip/
Download this for Jelly Bean (If you had KitKat DO NOT flash the Jelly Bean) :
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/download/27312/I435VRUAMK5_I435VZWAMK5_VZW.zip/
If you don't know what you had, flash the KitKat one.
Download Odin, Extrect the downloaded file, Press PDA in Odin and insert the extracted tar.md5 file. Make sure your phone is read with the "COM:**" and start. For detailed info, search on google. Good Luck.

I am not sure since this is the first time for me with experience with that phone...
In Odin, make sure Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time check boxes are only two that are selected. DO NOT SELECT ANY OTHER OPTION! Click the AP/PDA button and select that file you downloaded earlier with extension I435VRUBNE1_I435VZWBNE1_VZW.tar.md5 Click the CSC button and select file with CSC in its name. Ignore if there is no such file. Click the PIT button and select the .pit file. Ignore if there is no such file. (You should have this file, do it if you are having that error) Now, once you are ready, hit the START button to begin the flashing process.
If you have any other problems please ask.

Where do I get this file from? I looked at many Odin tutorials but none of them seem to say where I can get it. My phone is dead so if it's something that I need to extract/transfer from my phone then I'm out-of-luck.
I think I'll just contact Verizon and see if my phone is under warranty and if they can send me a new one. It may be easier than combing the web for a tutorial that more fully explains what this PIT file is and why I need it.
In the future should I disable Verizon OTA updates? I suspect a error during the update is what caused this problem in the first place.

The file should be one of the extracted files in the file you have downloaded from my links. If the file is not there, then most probably Verizon modded the phone to not be able to flash via Odin Mode.
The error during the update may have happened because of low battery, making your phone shut down during the update, which is serious.
You can check yourself if your phone is under warranty (excluding the warranty period)
-Just go to download mode and you will see: KNOX WARRANTY VOID: [if it is 0x0, than it you are still under warranty, but if it says 0x1, you are not.]
Yeah, you should go to the place you have bought the phone from, if none of the above steps worked for you.
Good Luck.
I looked at the links you sent me and I searched the samsung site but I could not find that PIT file. I bought it back into my local Verizon store and they gave me a new S4 Mini. The tech didn't say much about why it broke, he only said that it was still under warranty so I was covered. To avoid something like this happening again I wanted to disable updates on my new S4 Mini. I rooted my new phone, purchased Titanium Backup, and Froze SDM. Is there anything else I have to do?

You got the same version of your previous phone?
Yes, that's all they would do for free. They did offer me a Droid Turbo for and extra $100.00 but I really don't like the large phones they're coming out with these days so I declined.
Then you shouldn't get OTA Updates. I don't think that it was needed since the problem you got earlier was because of a faulty firmware from Verizon, which is unlikely or your phone had no battery while your phone was updating.

SM-T211 wifi + bluetooth not working after root and bloatware removal

Hi all, new guy to the forums. After rooting my T211 (4.1.2) via Odin and with TWRP and SuperSU, I started to remove some of the bloatware that Samsung sticks on the tabs. everything was working great until I rebooted one day and then the wifi and bluetooth stopped working. I've flashed the 4.4.2 in preperation to flash a custom rom, but it seems no matter what I do, the wifi and bluetooth issue remain. Can anyone help me with a zip to reinstall the wifi and bluetooth? or an instruction on how to do it? I have the 4.1.2 rom as well as the kitkat rom from italy and a few custom roms. If I knew how to make a flashable zip and which apks and such to use I would be happy to do it myself. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in Advance, James.

With odin of course and use the pit file for a full reformat wipe
Flashing stock rom
Trying it now. I'm a bit of a idiot, when I was trying to flash the stock rom, I forgot to unzip and wondered why I was getting an error...haha. I wanted to try a dirty flash just in case it worked but no kewpie doll. Trying it with the pit file now. fingers crossed.
Ugh...no luck. here's the read out from Odin. Not sure whats going wrong yet. Maybe not the right pit file.

Yea double check the pit file is for your model tablet
LT02.pit, this is the one that keeps getting reccomended in all the posts I've read. Says its for the T210 but it is supposed to be the same?
This is very frustrating thought I had it fixed. Wifi button turned on...bluetooth button turned on...just kept scanning. then both shut off and wont stay on
So after reflash they still do it?
yeah, they still do it. puzzling that it turns on but only scans and has no connection.
Using a file manager with root access, delete the following 2 directories:
/data/misc/bluedroid
/data/misc/wifi
Then, reboot.
Can't promise it will work, but it may.
Cool, gonna give it a try in a bit.
Any luck?
well, yes and no... after loading up root browser, I navigated to /data/misc. I don't have a bluedroid directory. I have a bluetooth and a bluetoothd and I have a wifi and a wireless directory. I deleted the first three and rebooted. I then was able to turn on the wifi and it recognized my router and connected...for about 10 seconds then shut off again and wouldn't turn on again. So, I think we're on the right track but not quite there yet. The fact that it did work even if temporarily was encouraging.
If it were me, I would go to sammobile.com and download the full firmware package for your region and flash it with Odin. That will ensure that you have a matching set of firmware (boot, radio, system, etc.) It will not wipe your data. If it works correctly after that, then you can reinstall your custom recovery and whatever rom you want.
Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
well, that didn't work either. Still has the same problem. I went into twrp and wiped everything except the external sd card. then with Odin, flashed 4.1.2 rom for UK and wifi will not turn on. Scratching my head now
Any other ideas?
Try using Heimdall with a full firmware package. You'll have to extract the firmware package (change the filename ending with ".tar.md5" to ".tar" and use 7-zip to extract it.
Then open up Heimdall, go to "Utilities -> Download PIT -> Destination File" and pick a location and name for the pit file.
Following this step, go to "Flash -> Options -> PIT" and browse to the pit file.
You will then have to go through the process of adding each partition that you want to flash, browsing to the location of the firmware package, and then flashing it.
I've done this several times, although I have not tried with "Repartition".
You will probably want to flash "SYSTEM", "MODEM", "KERNEL", and "RECOVERY" at a minimum. That said, it would be a *good* idea to use all the files inside the firmware package.
I'd upload packages I've made for my own convenience, but I'm unclear about their legal situation. I think I can get away with PMing links around though. Maybe.
EDIT1: Please post the output from the "Status" box if it fails.
Apologies for not responding sooner. Been busy with work, will try this soon and post results. Thanks
Can't get Heimdall to work. All I get is its not a valid win32 application. I refuse to give up on this, I know it's a software issue so there has to be a way to fix it. ...pulling my hair out though.

Same problem here. My understanding after doing a lot of research is that with the boot-loader locked we can not root using CF-Auto-Root. So currently and for the foreseeable future you, I, and all the other lucky souls with the SMN-910V are screwed! Verizon are bastards and that is about all I have to say about that...

There is not permanent root for the retail Verizon Note 4. Nor the AT&T Note 4. There are still developers working on it. It is that the boot-loader is locked and in the boot loader is a verifying routine/program call DM-verity. It looks for a key or something ( i am not programmer just a power user) and with this routine and verification process, if the key is not found you can not write to the /system directory. It is in read only mode. With out the System directory being writable, you can't have root.
I believe the boot loader on the Verizon S4 was also locked, but it was still rootable. I still have my S4 from before I got my Note 4, and there was a way to root it. I basically kept it stock, with the only notable difference being the hotspot icon in the notification panel. I'm not sure how it was done, but maybe, and I understand this is a BIG maybe, someone could look into how it was done on that phone and do something similar with ours. Like the last user in the last post, I'm no programmer, just someone who loves Android and still gets plenty of use out my phone, even though we can't root it yet, so I apologize if I'm way off here. Possibly just grasping at straws
A simple search of the Forums will show you many posts stating that the Note 4 does NOT have Permanent Root. Only the Developer Edition has Perm Root.
And after that search of the forums, if you read the posts you'll see what they have already tried. Needless to say those are very long threads.

Yep... I think that a lot of folks are just now buying this device and are bypassing the older threads altogether.
C'mon folks. S E A R C H.
The note3 has root, and is very similar to the Note4. I was lucky enough to sell my retail Note4 when it was new. It sold for almost what it cost for the Note4 Dev edition. Nowdays, when I see a dev ed Note4 go up on Ebay, it goes for $500-$900. This might be the last phone I buy for a long time. Honestly, if I can't get a phone with a replaceable battery, mSD card slot and root, then I might as well get an iPhone. At least Apple is able to keep Verizon from putting uninstallable crapware on their phone, and they do a good job in curating a good user experience.

Important Announcement
You probably have heard that Samsung has issued a worldwide safety recall on the Note 7 because of the numerous incidents that have occurred. It is strongly advised that you return your device following the instructions below (Samsung US link, for other countries look at your region's webpage).
Note 7 Safety Recall
Of course, you can choose to keep your device for whatever reason but I strongly advise against this. You could be putting yourself at risk and it is highly unlikely development will continue on this device (developers shouldn't have to develop on an unsafe device). Samsung have released firmware updates that will restrict you from charging your device over 60 percent.
Myself and XDA will not be held responsible for any damaged devices or injuries caused by this defective product.
Sometimes when I'm using an app say a game or something and get a notification like from CNN or Facebook the notification box will only pop up halfway for like a split second then the whole things loads into the full box if that makes sense.. Why?
I am coming from a Nexus 6P and have not figured out a solution to an issue.
I have an app that needs the options button to change settings. I cannot find a way to modify button behavior to create the same action. Anyone?

Have you tried removing administrative permissions from the app? It should be in the security settings.
Saber.
Of course I have removed all permissions all notification abilities I have restarted on safe mode numerous times I have pretty much tried everything known to man the problem is when I try to deactivate it it shuts down settings and won't let me do anything I have read of possible fixes on earlier versions but I have marshmallow and no one has any real good idea of how to deactivate a device Administration position on note7
my note 7 tmo is updated to 60% battery, the issue that i have is that the phone no longer detect my otg adaptor please help
I purchased a 930FD off ebay, and when i received it everything worked fine. I sent it in to attempt to get a replacement and the must have updated the software but when i got it back it wouldn't charge over 60%, i couldn't access my secure folder due to unauthorized software (or something like that), and when i sideloaded Samsung pay it wouldn't authorize for the same reason. I did have the issue with my secure folder previous to me sideloading Samsung pay, so that wasn't the cause. I read that re-initializing my device should fix the issue with the secure folder. I used smart switch to re-initialize my phone using the original serial number, when i started it back up (no sim card) it defaulted to Arabic (phone was slated for UAE i believe) so i changed that in initial setup to English (US) and proceeded down the settings. when i finally got access to the rest of the device my secure folder was still blocking me out and Samsung pay was in Arabic. So im looking for some help on how to fix my secure folder issue and get Samsung pay (and i assume a few other samsung apps) in English.
Thanks for the help. I also apologize if this is a simple question i tried to search first but the lingo around here is above my head)

I want to download some new edge panel apps. I have disabled updates and have package disabler installed. When I try it asks to update Samsung billing. Will this mess things up? Any help would be appreciated.
I used to have the note 7 but returned it and now have a Pixel xl. The note had this great feature to not be disturbed while playing games. Was that a specific app unique to the phone or did I just not transfer it over ? Please help sick of text and other notifications during gaming

I'm stuck, folks. And desperately need your help.
Long story short - I can't seem to flash back any stock ROM to recover from the FRP Lock after flashing the Hydra ROM with TWRP successfully once and rebooting it after a while. While repeating the procedure the BL and CP are installing fine per Hydra instructions. I'm even disabling the reboot and doing it manually to get back straight into the DL mode, but when starting TWRP AP the flashing fails with:
...
<ID:0/007> recovery.img
<ID:0/007> RQT_CLOSE !!
<ID:0/007>
<ID:0/007> Complete(Write) operation failed.
in Odin, and Custom Binary (RECOVERY) Blocked by FRP Lock on the phone.
On the DL screen:
- Product Name SM-N930F (tried several stock ROMS for it as well, but my original N7 is SM-N930X - Live Demo unit)
- Current Binary: Samsung Official
- System Status: Custom
- RP SWREV B:2 K:1 S:1 (I guess this is what the ROM is compared against).
Tried N930F stock: Either SYSTEM REV. CHECK FAIL. DEVICE:2, BINARY:1 or KERNEL REV. CHECK FAIL. DEVICE:1, BINARY:0
My understanding is that the Hydra ROM has installed its own newer kernel, which is failing to check against the original one.
Perhaps, there is a way to inject a custom kernel into original ROM?
Tried the G930F stock ROM : Custom binary (BOOT) Blocked by FRP lock
The Recovery Mode doesn't work (Tried the most recent SmartSwitch it just closing the recovery window as soon as I enter my real model and S/N)
