[Question] How to view and send emojis? (no root) - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

I recently just got my galaxy s3 so I'm trying to get the hang of it. One of the questions that I still have, after using the search tool, is if the gs3 has the ability to view and send emojis similar to the iPhone with the stock apps. I'm not looking to root my phone and not really looking to install programs like gosms (since I know it can only be viewed via text and not twitter). Open to any suggestions and I am running android 4.1.1.
Also for some reason after updating from 4.0 ICS to 4.1.1 JB I can see emojis (from iPhones) on twitter but it only comes up as the android version?

Sorry if I'm not explaining clear enough. If you do not understand, I will definitely elaborate.

If you are unwilling to root, and unwilling to install 3rd party apps, you won't be able to send or see emojis via stock messaging.
Some iPhone emojis will translate into an android counterpart but more often than not the message will appear blank.
Android does not support emoji by default.

Alright thanks. If I do root my phone, how will I be able to see and send emojis? And will I be able to see it via twitter as well?

You would need to download a keyboard from the play store that supports emojis

Swift keys is my favorite but you have to pay for that. But the keyboards will only let you send emojis. You would need a full SMS app like go sms or handcent too see them but these will also let you send them. No root needed for these.

Stock Messaging Application

I really don't like the new messaging application... can I just copy over the stock one from my HTC Desire (Oxygen ROM), or get more themes for the new one?
I 2nd this. It looks.. well a bit crap doesn't it?
I'm not rooted so I guess I can't replace it, but adding a bit of eye candy would make it look a lot better.
I'm rooted and I just copied over the application and it works great. The only minor issue is that when you press the menu button the new message icon is a random one, but it still works.

The file from CM works great
Would be good to get MIUI's messaging app!

Simply install "Go SMS Pro" from the market & just use it as your default messaging app{turned off notifications in the pre installed messaging app}--

Emoji is upon us...

you may care.. you may want to claw out your eyes, or you may enjoy it (like me). but Jellybean includes emoji!!!! To enable you need to go into your keyboard settings and find the dictionary add ons and enable it for english. What this does is allow you to type words like "baseball" and the emoji equivalent would pop up in the "suggested words" list above the stock keyboard. I haven't tried this with any add on keyboards yet.
If you haven't noticed on twitter or FB you can now see all of the icons but they're stylized to go with the "Holo" theme for ICS/JB.
Enjoy people. Or dont... whatever suits ya.
Can't find where to enable it.

Worst emoji ever, they should have incorporated the real color emojis
There's also no add-in for the stock keyboard. It's sort of a pointless feature currently if it's only half there. Can view, but can't easily type them. You can spell out the emoji if you happen to know them.
Couldnt figure out the way to download this Emoji dictionary , any help ?

They are real emoji. emoji is just a certain set of unicode characters, much like the text you're reading right now.

Here's some that I was able to figure out. Wish there was a list somewhere.
heart
smile
phone
all zodiac signs (capricorn, cancer, etc)
victory

snowflake
flower
rock
paper
scissors
king
queen
infinity
wheelchair
tent
Or you could just download it for Go or Handcent, then you can actually browse through them and pick the one you want. They've been around since Gingerbread for sure.

How do you get it to do that? I have tried and it doesn't seem to handle group messaging (iPhone-style) at all.

Only option that I can suggest is to use Handcent and its emoji plugin. I've been trying to get emojis to send from the stock messenger since the Evo LTE got upgraded to JB and that is the easiest way I have figured out. I send to and receive them from iPhones all the time. They do show up in my stock messenger when I look but they are in the dumbed down Android look not the colorful iPhone way. Handcent shows them correctly. It seems like the different manufacturers decided to leave them out for some reason :crying:

On rootbox there's stock support. But in messaging have you tried going into the settings? It's usually at the bottom where you have to enable them first, then when in a text press the menu key and a insert emoji button pops up

That's what we were saying. Google included it in the JB update so that's why you have it because your running a AOSP ROM, but the manufacturers (HTC & Samsung) decided to not include them in Sense & TW natively. I do know you can send them using Google Talk natively but no dice with the stock messaging apps, Handcent was my solution.
You can also use Chomp...need to install the emoji keyboard plugin though.

Yeah I forgot all about Chomp. Haven't used that since the Hero days. If I remember correctly from a thread over in the EvoLTE forums about this, people also had success using GoSMS also.
Yeah, I prefer to use the stock text messaging app. I do have Chomp installed for the rare occasion when someone on an iPhone (poor girl) sends me emojis then I will open Chomp just to see the emojis.
For some odd reason using go, chomp or handcent to send emoji to an iphone comes up with boxs and ?. Maybe its has to do its an iphone from cricket

Generally yeah but there's way too many impatient people around
Also, it helps me because I don't have any apps on the Play Store set to auto-update. I'll normally check once a week and update the ones which I feel need updating. I only actually do that because there's been many a time where I've installed an update and it's been much more unstable than the prior version. It then means I have to look around the net for an apk of the previous version

I don't think there is. It's only available in the conversation list, unfortunately.
I think they should add an option to get rid of Sender images if the sender isn't in your contacts. That way, your contacts images will stay while the rest would then be gone
