Did you flash the zip file of the ROM in CWM? Because you wrote only about flashing kernel.

You have flashed the kernel not the rom the rom is installed by going in to recovery and choosing .zip file which you should have downloaded and put on your SD card:crying:
Download the rom and put it on your SD card then boot into recovery and flash from there:good:
You have flashed the kernel, you must also flash the ROM.
CM10 thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1780316
Now flash stock-based kernel with CWM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1838916
after that your phone should boot normally.
Download and place on SD card these two files:
CM10 ROM: http://uploaded.net/file/5a0kokcr/from/wyv4cf
gapps: http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-jb-20121011-signed.zip
Boot to CWM (Keep pressing the Volume Down button during boot)
- Wipe Data/Factory Reset
- Mounts and Storage --> format /System
- Install zip from SD card > choose CM10 zip file
Let it flash and after that install gapps zip (without wiping).
After that, on the computer open CM10 zip file and extract boot.img - this is the kernel you now have to flash.

Turn your phone on, and press the Down volume key repeatedly. See if you can get to Recovery. If you can, flash the ROM, and you'll be fine. If not, get a stock ROM and flash it with Flashtool. Then, you can follow the proper procedure to get CWM on your phone.

You can't boot your phone to fastboot mode? Do you have drivers installed? If you flashed CM10 kernel I'm sure your know how to boot to fastboot?
To flash stock ICS download Flashtool and stock Rom and flash it with phone in flash mode.

1) Download the firmware appropriate for your phone from this page
http://xperiadev.wordpress.com/flashing/xperia-ftf-firmwares/
2) Download and install Flashtool. You can find the Setup file and the procedure on XDA or on the Net. Just do a search.
3) Flash the firmware onto your phone using Flashtool. All should be good.
PS: As far as I know, Flashtool is the only way to get yourself out of a brick. Happened to me once, worked like a charm. Give it a try and see how it goes.

how to flash it with flashtool if computer doesnt reqconize the phone?
Drivers are in Flashtool's installation folder. Install them from file Flashtool-drivers.exe
To boot to fastboot your phone must be turned off. Press and hold Menu button, plug in USB cable to your phone and plug the cable to the PC.
If your LED turns blue you can release Menu button - you are in fastboot.
(To get to flash mode it's the same procedure, but you hold Back button and LED turns green.)
So, boot to fastboot.
In Flashtool click thunder icon and choose Fastboot mode:

Keep trying. It took me several attempts before Flashtool detected my phone and was able to flash the firmware. Still, if nothing's working, I believe a trip to the service center is warranted.

For flashing CM you have to flash the CM kernel (boot.img) that comes in the zip package of CM , u hav to unzip the latest CM FXP package and flash boot.img through fastboot put the file boot.img in the same folder in your pc where fastboot is located and copy the CM Rom zip file on the root of your sdcard. Now connect ur phone in fastboot mode (turnoff & hold the search key while connecting to pc) check if ur phone is connected properly by entering the following command in command prompt
fastboot getvar version
if it return some value like 0.3 then ur connected correctly. Now for flashing the CM Kernel enter following command
fastboot flash boot boot.img
If all is done correctly a message will appear in command prompt stating success. Now turn on the phone while the phone is booting up press the volume rocker repeatedly until the phone enters CWM recovery mode , now install the CM Rom from ur sdcard remember to perform a nandroid backup and wipe the data/cache before installing.

First restore ur phone to the official
firmware through nandroid restore (u had that backup right ?) then U have to use flashtool for flashing that official Rom, search for flashtool 2.9.1 beta (only this version is compatible with play not use version 3.0) u will find that in xda forums download the file and unpack on the desktop a folder flashtool will be created inside that folder look for subfolder named drivers there will be an executable file ggsetup.exe run that file to install the drivers necessary ,after that copy the firmware .ftf file in the subfolder named firmwares. Now switch off your phone but not connect to pc yet. Run flashtool.exe in that application you will find flash button click on it and then select the firmware u have downloaded to flash , now u will see several files such as adsp.sin etc show up on the right side of flashtool you have to select all those files by ctrl+a or click seperately to select all of them after you are done with it make sure you have clicked wipe data on the upper right side and then click flash now the flashtool screen will show this message - preparing files for flashing , now keep ur phone ready u have to connect ur phone only after a message showing a image of x10 popup because it has some timeout (keep the back button pressed when connecting to pc a green led should lit up on power on/off button that means u are connected in flash mode) now the flashtool should also show phone connected and it will start flashing firmware automatically. Once flashing is done turn on the phone go to settings and turn on usb debugging and unknown sources.
After that u have to repeat the process of flashing CM kernel and flashing CM through recovery described earlier.

Hi there,
This may seem like a daft question but i have just rooted my Note 2 using Odin and i went ahead and installed CWM from the play store.
However, i don't seem to have the option of making a backup of my current ROM.
All it gives me is (in blue)
reboot system now
apply update from ADB
apply update from external storage
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
apply update from cache.
This worked on my HTC One X, am i doing something wrong? My Note 2 was purchased as SIM free from phones4u.
I'm on android version 4.1.2, baseband version N7100XXDLK7, BUILD NO. JZO54K.N7100XXDMB2., MODEL NO. GT-N7100.
Could my bootloader still be locked? Is this causing the issue?
Any help would be much appreciated!
Just flash CWM/TWRP recovery.
Here is one of it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2028103
Loading default android recovery even though TWRP successfully installed
Hi,
I am not sure if I should've started a separate thread for this, please move this if this has to be a separate thread but I've mentioned below why I am posting here.
My phone Galaxy note 2 International version GSM is rooted and I installed TWRP through Goomanager and I got a message stating that "Recovery was successfully installed". After this I shut down the phone and pressed Volume up + Home + Power to go into recovery mode and it still goes into the Android default recovery mode. I tried installing it again and still faced the same issue.
Since I was having a problem, I thought I will install TWRP through Odim 3.7. So, I connect PC to my phone and downloaded the openrecovery-twrp-2.3.1.1-n7100.img.tar.md5 and opened Odim in administrator mode and clicked on PDA >> Start. Within a second I got an error stating "odin downloader has stopped working". I went to task manager and shut down Samsung KIES and tried again but still got the same error.
Next, I tried using the Samsung Note 2 Toolkit. Before I installed TWRP through option 5 in the toolkit, I wanted to Rename Recovery Restore files (if present) as suggested by the toolkit. When I chose this option, I get an error stating adbd cannot run as root in production builds. When I googled this error, it went to a post which said that the bootloader needs to be unlocked.
But then the previous post says that I need TWRP for unlocking the bootloader and I'm doing all this to first of all install TWRP.
Apart from this, as additional Info, when I open ROM Manager - Under Recovery Setup - Current Recovery is Team Win Recovery Project. When I choose to reboot in Recovery mode from the application, it goes to the Android System Recovery. No matter what I do, TWRP recovery just does not seem to open up.
I'm pretty clueless now as to what other options I have or if I have messed up somewhere
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thank you
its already unlocked :good:
all u need costume recovery ( TWRP or CWM )
TWRP is far better IMO

The problem as I've described in my post is that I am unable to go into TWRP Recovery mode, I've installed the scripts using goomanager several times but when I shut down the phone and press volume up + Home + Power, it goes to Android Recovery mode and not the TWRP Recovery mode.

Yahyoh,
Thank you for your response but if you see my original post, I have mentioned that I had already tried Odin 3.7 and put my phone in download mode and got the blue color showing ID: COM but when I pressed start, Odin gave an error stating odin downloader has stopped working and the only dialog box was to close. So, once I press START, I get a error message in a second and have to shut down. I did make sure that I have the correct tar version as I downloaded from TWRP's website directly for N7100. I did make sure that Kies was also closed.
After this I tried using Toolkit and that didn't help as well. Kinda going crazy why such a simple thing is getting to become a irritating problem, been sitting on this for the past 4 hours.

I have tried downloading odin 4 or 5 times. The cable I have is brand new samsung cable. Right now, I dont have another pc but might have to go to a friends and try if that helps. I do have a mac but not sure if there is mac version of odin. I'm attaching a picture of what I see when I press volume up + home+power.

Hi,
1. Check that USB drivers are properly installed.
2. Your USB cable is proper and allows you to charge your phone as well as copy data from your PC.
3. Change USB port and try again. (This has worked in my case)

Usb drivers are installed properly. PC reads the phone as soon as itd connected. Tried three different usb ports that is available in my laptop. The phone does get charged when it's connected and I'm able to transfer data. Only thing left to try is a different pc.
Since ur already rooted, y not flash via mobile odin app? Untar to internal storage and rename the twrp image to recovery.img (btw theres a newer v2.5.0.2) and let mobile odin look for it.
Or u can dump the image directly to ur recovery partition using terminal apps:
Code:
su;
dd if=/storage/sdcard0/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p9 bs=4096;
sleep 5;
reboot;

Hi Nazar78,
Mobile odin app is not free, it needs to be purchased. I already have the twrp image in the internal storage and was looking around if there was a free version of mobile odin app somewhere but couldn't find it.
I do not know how to use terminal apps and not familiar with the commands etc. So didn't wanna try that and mess it up. As a temporary solution I have installed CWM latest version using Rom manager but TWRP would be much better as it seems to be more user friendly.
If you could tell me how to enter this terminal apps page, I will probably follow the codes you have given and see if that helps.
Thanks
just install Android Terminal : https://play.google.com/store/apps/...251bGwsMSwxLDEsImphY2twYWwuYW5kcm9pZHRlcm0iXQ..
then type via keyboard what @Nazar78 wrote in the terminal
Just download any free terminal emulator app from play store and enter those commands per line each.
Btw u mentioned previously about adbd can't run on prod builds, its because the adbd binary in ur rom is stock, u need a patched one. Look for app called adbd insecure by CF. Or any custom builds should do the trick...
To flash recovery, tou need not to have paid version of mobile odin
Wait updating this post with link
Edit : here is mobile odin lite
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1347899
Download attached mobile odin lite from post 1
Then download flasher kernel from post 7
(download 5.0 versiin) and install
Then open mobile odin Select recovery tab, point to recovery file (tar/img) and flash

Thank you
Thanks Nazar78, Yahoyoh and Ketan, It's about 1:30am now, so I'm gonna shut down now and try these tomorrow. WIll get back with updates. Appreciate.
Also if you have installed EMET, a Microsoft software to stop security exploits, disable it.
It's cause me issues in the past.
I've also seen reports of people not having odin running properly when the kies process runs in the background. This was always the case when flashing with the Galaxy s, and might be a rare occurance with the note 2 too.

[ How to Unlock ] (Official Way)
Video Link ---> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRH3pC7MhEA
For better understanding, I highly recommend you to watch the above video along with the instructions below:
1.) Download ‘Fastboot Drivers And Pacakges File For Xperia S’ file from → Here
2.) Extract the file you downloaded above on your PC. You’ll get the following three files:
drivers.zip
fastboot_with_Android_USB_file.zip
3.) Go to: http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/ and read everything!
This will open a web page in your default browser. Scroll to the bottom of the Instructions on the page and you’ll see a link like “Continue”, click on it.
In the pop-up window click “Yes, I’m sure” and then in the next window click on both the checkboxes, and then click “I accept”.
4.) Now insert the details as per the instructions:
First 14 digits of your IMEI No. Do NOT enter the last digit (15th) in the box. To know your IMEI No. dial *#06# on your Xperia Arc.
Your Name
Your Email Address
Click Submit.
5.) You’ll get a KEY to unlock boot loader. Write it down somewhere you can remember, it will be used later.
6.) Switch off your phone.
7.) Now extract the “fastboot_with_Android_USB_file.zip” file you got in Step 2.2.
8.) Pick up your phone (it must be switched off) and hold the “Menu” button (the key at the bottom right of your phone), now while holding the “Menu” button connect your phone to your PC with an USB cable.
9.) Once connected — the LED light near the phone’s USB plug will turn blue. If it doesn’t — repeat the Step 8.
10.) Now to install the drivers do the following:
Extract the “drivers.zip” file you got in Step 2.1
Open “Device Manager” on your PC and look for “S1Boot Fastboot” under the head “Other devices”
Right-click on “S1Boot Fastboot” and select “Update Driver Software…”
Now select “Browse my computer for driver software” and select the folder where you’ve extracted all the three files you got in Step 2. Once done — click Ok.
Now click Next (Make sure you’ve ticked the “Include subfolders” checkbox).
If you see any Windows security warning box, don’t worry . Just select “Install this driver software anyway”
Wait for “Windows has successfully updated your driver software” message to appear on your screen. Now click Close.
11.) Open the “fastboot” folder from the file we extracted in Step 7.
12.) Now hold Shift and press mouse right click (Shift + Mouse Right Click) anywhere on the empty white space inside the “fastboot” folder. And then select “Open command window here” from the context menu.
13.) Now in the command prompt window type/paste the following:
fastboot.exe -i 0x0fce getvar version
14.) It should return a value like “0.3”. This ensures that your device is correctly connected.
15.) Now type/paste the following line in the command prompt window:
fastboot.exe -i 0x0fce oem unlock 0xKEY
IMPORTANT! Replace the word “KEY” from the above line with the KEY that you received in Step 5. Then Hit Enter.
Click to collapse
16.) Now wait for the process to complete. Command prompt will show a “Finished” message when it will be completed.
17.)Once it’s done, disconnect the USB cable from your phone and switch it ON.
18.)Your phone’s boot loader should now be Unlocked.
(The above videos and some steps are for Xperia 2011 devices, but most the steps are same for Xperia S/P/U/Sola)

Troubleshooting
If you experience a bootloop (phone constantly reboots and reboots on the boot screen) or a soft brick (powering on the phone shows an orange triangle with a phone and computer), don’t be afraid. XDA to the rescue!
For a bootloop:
Hold The Power Button And Volume Up Button
If You Hold For 3 Seconds = Soft Reset = 1 Viberation
If You Hold For 10 Seconds = Hard Reset = 3 Viberations***
Power on the Phone Again, Keep pressing Volume Up Button
Your phone will boot into recovery.
Select “Wipe data/ Factory reset”. (Volume Up for going up and Volume down to go down)
After the reset is done, select “Reboot system now”.
The phone will reboot and you should be all fine.
***Do Not Try Hard Reset Untill And Unless The Phone is Facing Major Problems,
For a soft brick:
You probably flashed some faulty firmware or firmware not meant for your device.
The File You Downloaded Must Be Incomplete.
Download the correct firmware and flash again.

Hi, I searched a lot for the way to flash a custom rom on my Xperia S. But now halfway through, I've got a problem. My device says it does not allow to unlock bootloader, so does that mean that there is no way I can flash a custom rom on my phone? :crying:

You can use only Stock based ROM for locked bootloaders, not the unlocked bootloaders one.

Wait i will let you know the complete story.
so what happened is
first i was on CM11 for few mnths then switched to MIUIv5 for 1 month. everything was working fine
but when day before yesterday i flashed PA rom i am not able to access the recovery now (previously there was TWRP in my XS). now i can't flash any zip file
when i reboot to recovery it gets stuck on black blank screen. Even the recovery apps like twrp are not working. when i tried to install recovery through app, the app crashes.
As recovery is not working i cant even switch to other roms or any zip file.
i am totally stuck on this ROM
i asked this que on sony mobile group on FB (created by some sony fans), one of the member said "probably this is not ROM fault but the kernel fault. consider trying new kernel"

Ah yes, even that one doesn't have recovery.
Unlocked bootloader is must.
You need an Android app. You can find the app here. Also, here is the page of the twrp.
What You need to do is, download the twrp from here. Rename it to fotakernel.img .
Then copy it to Your sdcard.
Then run the following commands on the terminal emulator app:
Code:
su
dd if=/sdcard/fotakernel.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p11
TWRP installed!
Well, I'm not quite sure what's wrong. First of all I tried to flash a new ROM but forgot to allow for unknown sources and turn on debugging, then whilst that was still just rebooting over and over again I managed to flash a stock ROM using Flashbooter. That worked fine until now when I'm trying to root the device and with using two or three different rooting programs I get the same error message "cannot find path" (or something to that affect).

Flashing into recovery has nothing to do with superuser. And read my reply. SuperSU-1.25-Busybox-1.20.2-UPDATE : This will install superuser and busybox. Google this : SuperSU-1.25-Busybox-1.20.2-UPDATE, and download it and flash it through recovery.

You need a kernel with recovery. That kernel I recommended has that. An application will never reboot your phone into recovery, unless you press the volume up button while tapping the SONY logo, on some phones. So, power off your phone. Power it on, it will vibrate once, now press the volume up button and keep it pressed until you see the the recovery layout.

Well this is getting embaressing. I cannot get the bloody thing to go in to recovery. It either goes into flash or fastboot mode. Right so I downloaded Advance Stock Kernel with Recovery v4 (FW: 10.1.1.A.1.253) and tried to flash it but got this error message:

Your bootloader is locked or unlocked ?
The same method mentioned by DooMLoRD here at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2417672 holds true for [FTF][LT26ii]New firmware Xperia SL[ 6.2.B.1.96 ] Generic World + ME
THESE METHODS WORKS FOR BOTH LOCKED & UNLOCKED BOOTLOADERS
Either you can flash the Xperia S kernels mentioned in DooMLoRD's post or you can choose kernels made exclusively for Xperia SL (LT26ii)
I have followed the later path and used stock kernels extracted from signed ftf ROMs.
Method 1 (Easier)
1- Download these three files:
(1) LT26ii_6.2.B.0.211_XperiaSL_KernelOnly.ftf - 6.36 MB
(2) LT26ii_6.2.B.1.96_XperiaSL_KernelOnly.ftf - 6.33 MB
(3) DooMLoRD_Easy-Rooting-Toolkit_v18_perf-event-exploit.zip - 2.96 MB
2- Download [FTF][LT26ii]New firmware Xperia SL[ 6.2.B.1.96 ] Generic World + ME and flash your phone by putting it in flashmode by pressing VOLUME DOWN KEY while plugging in to your PC via USB cable(Optional if you didn't have already flashed latest stock firmware).
3- Open Flashtool and flash LT26ii_6.2.B.0.211_XperiaSL_KernelOnly.ftf - 6.36 MB the same way you would flash a stock ROM by putting your device in flashmode (but this time it's only the kernel).
4- Disconnect from PC, reboot and turn on USB debugging mode and install from Unknown Source.

}
5- Close Flashtool and Root your device with DooMLoRD_Easy-Rooting-Toolkit_v18_perf-event-exploit.
6- After automatic restart you should be able to see SuperSU app installed on your phone.
7- Open Flashtool and put your device in flashmode then flash original LT26ii_6.2.B.1.96_XperiaSL_KernelOnly.ftf - 6.33 MB.
8- Reboot!!! Your device is now rooted.
Method 2
1- Instead of using XperiaS_LT26i_6.2.B.0.211_KernelOnly.ftf - 6.36 MB , download stock .211 kernelLT26ii_6.2.B.0.211_kernel.sin - 6.74 MB
2- Instead of XperiaS_LT26i_6.2.B.1.96_KernelOnly.ftf - 6.33 MB, use this stock .96 kernel LT26ii_Xperia_ SL_6.2.B.1.96_kernel.sin - 6.71 MB
3- Download DooMLoRD_Easy-Rooting-Toolkit_v18_perf-event-exploit.zip - 2.96 MB
4- Download the Minimal ADB and Fastboot Tools.
5- Put the both stock kernels in the same folder of ADB and Fastboot Tools.
6- Press Shift+Right Click inside this folder and choose Open command window here.
7- Shutdown your device.
8- Put XSL in fastboot mode by pressing Volume UP key while connecting the USB cable to your powered off Xperia SL (Blue LED is the sign that your device is connected to your PC in fastboot mode).
9- Run this command in command prompt
Code:
fastboot flash boot "LT26ii_6.2.B.0.211_kernel.sin"
10- Disconnect the device after successful finish and POWER ON.
11- Root with the same method mentioned in DooMLoRD's thread using DooMLoRD_Easy-Rooting-Toolkit_v18_perf-event-exploit.
12- At this point you will need to re-flash .96 stock kernel.
13- Shutdown your device again.
14- Put Xperia SL in fastboot mode.
15- Run this command in command prompt
Code:
fastboot flash boot "LT26ii_Xperia_ SL_6.2.B.1.96_kernel.sin"
16- Disconnect the device after successful finish and POWER ON.
17- Your device is now rooted.

What said FAILED! The Device must be rooted first!"? I performed all the above mentioned steps on the stock ROM. Be sure to turn on the USB Debugging ON and Install from Unknown Sources.

You have to manually locate your phone model. And remember it will fall under Sony Xperia S (LT26).
Next thing you will have to do is click Flash Device button (The lightning button).

Regardless of the method, you will only get root access. You can always get CWM through flashing custom kernel.

Yup sure. You can use from DooMLoRD. As far as I can tell (please correct me if I am wrong) that XS and XSL share the identical kernel.
Does flashing erase the phone data?

No, flashing kernel will not erase phone data. However, flashing stock full ROM will definitely erase your phone data (The builtin SD card is not touched). You are advised to take backup before trying anything.
I am having issue using both the methods. Emma doesn't work on locked bootloader and neither fastboot. Am I missing something?
EDIT: I run on Windows 8 and all of my ports are USB 3.0. I remembered I ran something to make it compatible in order for me to update via PC Companion - perhaps I am missing a compatible fastboot driver?
EDIT: Got it worked. I am silly, thinking that flashtool is the Emma provided by Sony, but instead the flashtool here means the one by bin4ry and androxyde.

Emma was never meant in the first place.
Got a stupid problem. When I connect my SXS (power + vol down), green led light comes up, flash tool says "Connected device with USB debugging mode off" (obviously it's turned on), and it comes back after ca. 10-20 secs to charging mode. I can't even start flash, because I'm doing everything slowly (to don't destroy my phone ), so when I'm ready to press flash it change back to normal charging. Adb drivers from few sources installed (device manager indicate properly), pcc, SUS installed.

OK, you are adopting the wrong methodology.
First turn on the USB debugging in normal stock rom.
Then turn your device off and wait for 30 seconds after powering off.
Afterwards just press the volume down key (not the power key) and connect your micro USB cable (that is of-course connected to your PC).
This will put your device in flash mode.
Cheers.
Thanks! works great! just rooted two of my friend's phones
