First attempt at rooting and wanna now what the preferred method is. I also wanna know if it's possible to root without tripping the counter.

I know that someone is gonna tell me to look at the development section. But I'm pretty must just looking for advice.

Telling you to look in the development section is one of the best advice we can give you.
What's the point of trying not to trip the counter anyways? You can always reset it. Plus if you plan to give your phone a custom ROM in the future, you'll troop the counter anyways.
I was wondering the same thing.... I just updated to 4.1.2 here in canada using Rogers network. I would like to know which method is safe for me to use without bricking my phone

Both ExynosAbuse and the method in the Development section are safe. ExynosAbuse is just easier and quicker without the use of a computer.

I can't seem to find too much information on how to go about doing it. I realize the general idea is that it's usually similar to the AT&T variety, and it seems that some people may have done it already, but I'd like some more information before I do it myself.
i.e. what method to use, anything to look out for, does it flash on at&t labels/logos/branding like it did for the galaxy s captivate, etc...
Ideally, I'd like to flash a custom rom at some point, but for now I'd be happy to just have root so I could mess with certain apps I'd like to try, and get rid of the bloat ware.
You need to use the method that uses CWM and then install root from there. Make sure the root .zip file is on your sdcard, and then flash CWM with Odin without reboot selected. Once it's flashed, turn off your phone (best bet is a battery pull) and then turn it back on holding power, home and up until it boots into CWM. Once in CWM, flash the zip for root and you're golden.
This does add one to the flash counter, but it's the only way to do it with Rogers/Bell/Telus phones ATM.
So if the flash counter goes up, does that mean the warranty is void?
They could deny a warranty claim, yes. I'm not saying that they will, but it's possible.
I rooted mine and yes the counter did increment. There is a method on XDA that shows you how to stop the counter from incrementing but I didn't see it until I rooted. Check out the AT&T S3 section, I think that is where I saw it.
Edit: Here it is... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426

That method is no good to us until Rogers/Samsung release an official firmware that can then be modified by the devs to work for us on that method. Using that method as it is will result in having an att firmware which wouldn't show well when at Rogers asking for warranty service .

This method states that it doesnt effect anything to do with the firmware just roots the device. I am not sure about flash counter though. If you read the comments a rogers person has done it.

Yup, that trips the flash counter.

You can do it as long as you are ok with att branded firmware and no option to toggle lte. This will change very soon as Rogers firmware was released this morning and the devs are already working to incorporate this into this method so we can do it and end up with Rogers firmware that a store will honor the warranty on.
Edit: I looked at your link, you are referring to a different method involving installation of a custom recovery. This method will work on Rogers but will trip the flash counter. I was referring to the root only method mentioned here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426.

Yes, and Mr Robinson's thread has been updated for Rogers firmware. I am already rooted with no change in trip counter, worked perfectly! Link to Mr. Robinson's thread is here

Hello guys
Im new to Samsung, bought my phone a month ago and love it to be honest. The problem is dont know most of things on android and samsung. been looking at the forum hours and hours and learnt most of it from you.
I want to know if rooting is any good? why would you root your device or why wouldnt you? advantages and disadvantages?
Is it easy to do it? (as Im new dont wanna brick my phone) I have seen that if you root your phone your warranty will be avoid. If you unroot will it be still avoided?
Hope my questions are clear.
Hi and welxome to xda. Rooting basically gives you full rights over your phone and breaks most barriers put in place. Hands down the best thing about rooting your phone is that it gives you the ability to install a custom rom which improves on the current rom (the systen you are interacting with)
It is really easy to root a note2, i suggest you read the stickys-they have a guide for it.
Lastly the only downside is that you can brick ur phone if anything is DONE without reading the instructions. Or flashing something that is not in a N7100 forum.
And it voids warantee, but there is a workaround (traingleaway, search it )
Hope i answered your question

Thanks for you response mate. Whats the quickest and easiest and safest root ? Like iphone jailbreaks are so easy all you need to do is plug your phone in and press the jailbreak button and after 2 3 minutes all done. Is there any program or software like that?
I suggest you before rooting do a bit of research on why you need to root rather than root it "because you can" as you read rooting has it drawbacks specially for noobs.
If you can live without some specific feature only available through rooting, don't root avoid a headache.

Haven't rooted yet. Found many instructions for the easy cf-auto-root but not much on unrooting, which may be needed for OTA updates or warranty checks.
Anyways you may wanna look into rooting after finding some uses for it. Otherwise it may be an unnecessary risk. There is a lot of customisation and functionality available using the stock rom and market apps alone.

you can unroot (rooted with cf autoroot) by supeSU (you will get it by rooting)setting menu
OR
by simply flashing stock ROM with odin will unroot device
(In both case you should have to reset counter while you are having root, to claim warranty)

Does unrooting using superSU require restoring factory settings or anything? Or does it do it cleanly?
I want to be able to update through OTA.
Sent from my GT-N7100
factory reset won't need, cosmetically you won't see any rooting sign.
But regarding OTA, really its weired
you never can say surely, i have seen who have unrooted + factory reset, even they fails to install update (though even getting update)
so be prepare to flash using odin, if you don't get OTA.
You need to factory flash via Odin and then use triangle away to reset the flash counter that should allow you to update OTA.

did some reading but didnt really find what i was looking for in this section.
i have the Note 2. v 4.1.2 but i want to downgrade to 4.1.1 so that i can unlock my device so i can use any carrier.
but then i would want to do the 4.1.2 update again completely stock from the OTA or whatever its called. and still have it permanently unlocked from the previous 4.1.1
should i use odin and a stock 4.1.1tar file for the PDA to flash it or would this be the wrong way of doing this and possibly voiding my warrenty
Well there's a few ways of doing that. The way you mentioned!
But you can also just downgrade your modem to the J2, and you can perform the unlock that way... But if unsure about what your doing, do some research..

so are you saying to only flash the modem with the I317MVLALJ2 modem and thats it... because i do know how to flash with odin. i did it with my first galaxy and for some reason the micro sd slot stopped working. so i was thinking this method would screw up my note 2. i just want to downgrade to unlock it then re update
this was the method i was going to go with. what would you say?!

well i am not rooted and i want to go back to COMPLETE stock. so i will go with ODIN. I haven't figured out the benefits of a rooted device. other then screen recording and a few little things here. then again i havent gotten deep into it to see what the benefits are.
but if you know some awesome things that benefit having a rooted device do share

I root to freeze a bunch of useless system apps. That alone is enough for me.
Rooting is only 1 part of a very large puzzle when you are talking about modification ...
Root is only a tool ...
And the real fun starts when you can build and theme or modify any number of parts inside your device ...
You don't own it unless it's rooted ...and you'll never fully enjoy it until you make the changes that unleash what these devices are capable of ...
And that starts by reading and learning ...then reading and learning more...
Then you will be on your way to making the phone truly yours ....g

I've read through all the relevant threads. I suspect I know the answer to this question, but I wanted to ask to make sure.
I picked up a new T-Mo Note 2 yesterday, was on 4.1. (without reading first) I did the OTA to 4.3.
I would like to keep the stock ROM but have root access.
I would like to have the option to install other ROMs, if needed.
I don't care about losing the data on the phone right now (it is new...)
I don't care about the warranty.
I don't need to unlock (right now) - but am going to Europe in a few months and will probably want to then.
I don't know if I need to care about Knox.
Should I go through mrRobinson's process?

Yes. I think that's the easiest method to root without tripping the Knox Binary Counter. (But I wouldnt know because I'm still on 4.1.2 Rooted and Rom'd)
I think rooting via this method trips the counter. Anyone on Mr Robinsons rom please confirm if Knox counter has tripped ?

I used Mr. Robinson's
Pretty sure it trips the counter - I had already tripped it...
First of all, if you don't care about the warranty, then all that really matters is this...
It is a great rom for fixing problems you may encounter after rooting incorrectly and establishing a "fresh root". I use it whenever I go to a new rom now. It has never failed to make things go smoother. Just used it to upgrade to the new ezKAT rom. Now I have Note 3 and S5 features on my Note 2, and it works beautifully. But I had nothing but problems with the installation until I went to my old fail-safe of flashing Mr. Robinson first and then dirty-flashing ezKAT over it. Voila - perfection!:good:
I now consider Mr. Robinson's rom as basic as a screwdriver in my rooting tool box. And it's especially useful for noobs.
Alright so I want to trade my phone in, and the store doesn't check the Warranty Bit 1, only the Custom firmware/rooted flags. I wanted to TriangleAway the flags and restore stock 4.3 ROM.
Does anyone know where I could find stock 4.3 ROM's for Sprint S3? Would all of this work how I'm planning without worrying about bricking the phone I'm supposed to hand in?
I could care less about the Warranty Bit, everything else just needs be reverted and the phone unrooted.
Thanks.

i know. I spent this whole time looking and none of my questions were answered. However, I luckily did find what I was looking for.
1) Stock 4.3 ROM in flashable Odin format
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565972
2) Triangle away to be accepted to T-Mobile Uncarrier program
Triangle away wasn't needed for T-Mobile carrier switching. It only looks for a custom ROM and root. Since it was an offiicial ROM and unrooted, it had passed.
So, I had figured it out myself, mostly without google. No need to assume I hadn't attempted to find it first
