[Q] (question) rooting and stock rom - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi...
i am planning on rooting my SGN2 this weekend but i have some questions in my mind i wanna clear up first
1. if i root my SGN2 (JB 4.1.1), and still use stock rom, will i get OTA updates or will i need to unroot?
2. if i root my SGN2 (JB 4.1.1), and still use stock rom, will i lose any stock functions or will it just be the same as an UNROOTED SGN2?
3. are there any known issues of rooting SGN2 and stay on Stock rom?
4. if i root my SGN2 (JB 4.1.1), and still use stock rom, will there be any differences from my UNROOTED STOCK rom, from a ROOTED STOCK rom? what are they?
thanks guys, and more power..
hope to hear some replies

1. rooting will break OTA, sometimes unrooting with factory reset needs to get OTA, so i straight way like to say, don't expect OTA too simple if you want to root. and be prepared for flashing full ROM with Odin
2.You won't lose function but learning hub OR skyGo and some banking application known to stop working as long as you have rooted device.
3.Rooting voids warranty, and you have to unroot (as well reset counter,if you have it raised)before sending to service station.

thank you...
ok, so if i root my SGN2 (JB 4.1.1), then an update comes out for example, 4.1.2, i will have to
1. unroot, (which is no problem)
and 2. factory reset, which will cause me to lose all my data and back ups? which can be trouble some
am i understanding it right?
and what do you mean by "and be prepared for flashing full ROM with Odin" i wont get to keep stock rom?

Just use CF root, flash with Odin now you will be rooted on stock rom if you want to update to 4.1.2 just download the FW from sammobile,go ahead and flash it using Odin again now you will be no longer rooted. But before you flash the stock FW be sure to reset the counters(triangle away)
And yes a factory reset you will loose everything.you will not loose whats on your external memory card
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app

factory reset you will lose data but once you are rooted, there is lot option to backup, titanium is one of best.
"and be prepared for flashing full ROM with Odin" means in any case you won't get update, you can anytime download full ROM and flash it with odin. when OTA release, sametime you can also find full ROM for that update.
you will find most of answer here

cf root? is that a way to root my note 2? where do i get it?
"if you want to update to 4.1.2 just download the FW from sammobile,go ahead and flash it using Odin again now you will be no longer rooted" - how do i root again? same steps? CF root?
"But before you flash the stock FW be sure to reset the counters(triangle away)" - why do i need to do this? i think my unit does not have warranty its from greenhills, it only has service waranty for 6months
thank you

For your current version method 3 in thread i said you (post#2)
That even won't raise counter and you need not to use triangle away.
In future when you update to 4.1.2, method 3 won't work.
Just read said thread post #2 and 3 particularly and you will get answer of your most of questions

just last question, (i will root later , cannot wait)
last question is...
after using "ExynosAbuse apk" to root like you said, what is next step to update Firmware to 4.1.2?
and for example, if v4.1.3 comes out, what method will i use to update again since i did not use odin to flash rom and u said "In future when you update to 4.1.2, method 3 won't work. "
thank you very much...
you are kind to reply and spend time with a noob like me...
a billion thanks to you...

You can unroot from exynos abuse and try to get ota
If fails try wiping data and most probably you should get ota, but remember i said most probably, i have seen case after wiping you may fail to get ota, in that case you will have only option to update is odin (you may try Kies too)
When new update will available most probably other methods should work(as of now other both method works till rom released today) , but when there is no 4.1.3,it is difficult to say, so stay tuned to thread I mentioned few post back.

if i use method 3... exynosabuse method
how do i back up my phone? i did not install cwm recovery here so i cannot have nandroid backup right? well how do i back it up if ever things get messed up..
what backup recovery do i have if i use method 3?
thanks...

If you want nandroid backup then you have to use method 2
Otherwise with just root, you can backup your data with titanium backup or other similar application.

i did method 2.. thank you so much....

I used mskip's toolkit and it worked well. I have the exact same initial settings as you had.

Flash the latest stock rom should be dll7 or newer. Then use cfautoroot.
If an update comes out in future then do a factory reset and flash stock rom.

Perfect...so I just dl the Stock L900VPAMA7 All-In-One Firmware one and then use TWRP to flash it?
I also feel like a bit of a noob...is this JB 4.2.1 or 4.1.2?
You have to go back to a stock UNROOTED rom. Without TWRP or anything.
Then you download the OTA update.
In in the stock recovery boot.
Then once the OTA update applies you can root and do whatever.

Download the third one Down that says all in one firmware and flash in TWRP. That is the modem and other things for ma7. Then download either the first or second link depending on if u want odex or deodexed rom. If u don't want any themes then go odex. Then flash that in TWRP wiping cache and dalvik. Then u are on ma7.

Exactly. Unless you install a rom that has the latest update built in the only way to take the actual ota from Sprint/Samsung is to unroot and install stock recovery. Before you unroot you need to make sure that your binary counter isn't more than one. If you don't know what that is then run the app "triangle away". If your counter is more than 2 you'll need to run it that many times till it's back to 1. After that you need to unroot preferably with something like supersu that can clean everything up before unrooting. Then you have to flash it back to stock recovery. There is a tutorial video in galaxynote2root.com. I had to do this to mine since I was just rooted with stock rom and didn't feel like installing a rom with the update already in it. Good luck

OTA
Just search xda for the modded OTA update files and then flash them through TWRP
This is so confusing. I have searched everywhere and the help on this is so limited. Can someone who successfully updated their note 2 to ma7 please do a walkthrough on how they did it. And please do it for us 5 year olds without acronyms and such.
Where do you find the modded ota update?

So you downloaded the latest OTA and it did not affect root ??
still getting ota notification
flashed the all-one , and the odexed ma7 rom, the phone shows that I am running 4.1.2 but I am still getting the ota notification that I have an update downloaded and ready to install.
Any ideas on what went wrong or how to stop the notification???
Don't quote me on this, but from what I have read, On a custom recovery it will fail when trying to install and never show you the notification message again for you to install again. Try and see, worst case scenario it will not install and no harm no fowl.

[ROM/RESTORE] [AT&T/ROGERS/TELUS/BELL]Return to UNROOTED STOCK WITH FLASH COUNT RESET

[ROM/RESTORE] [AT&T/ROGERS/TELUS/BELL]Return to UNROOTED STOCK WITH FLASH COUNT RESET
IF YOU HAVE TAKEN THE OTA TO STOCK TW 4.3 DO NOT USE THIS!! IT WILL CAUSE A HARD BRICK!!
I'll try to keep this simple.
So here it goes, short but sweet...
This is a Single recovery flashed file restore to UNROOTED STOCK with STOCK KERNEL, STOCK RECOVERY, MODEM, and Normal System Status with a Flash Counter at 0. Basically a replacement for the odin tar method for a quick on-the-go restore. This is the go-to file for a last minute trip to the at&t store or for unbricking without the need for a pc or ODIN. Plan on selling to buy something newer? Flash this to restore your s3 to an out of the box ota-ready state for the buyer. This will do what odin does with the addition of resetting the flash count during flash. This WILL NOT touch internal storage!
To keep a custom recovery flash one from below after rom flash before rebooting into the system.
To keep root access flash this after install BEFORE rebooting into system.
As with just about any rom you'll find posted on these forums, wipe data/factory reset prior to flashing and FLASH AT YOUR OWN RISK as I am not responsible for anything you do to your phone.
Special thanks to @mrksbrd for helping me bring this to the AT&T variant, @Turbojugend for helping me bring this to BELL, @FabC87 for helping me bring this to TELUS, @gutlessmerc for helping me bring this to the 32gb ROGERS variant and @tobesedated for helping me bring it to the 16gb ROGERS variant.
** These zips contain full firmware flashing. Checking the MD5 is highly recommended
FOR THE AT&T/ROGERS/BELL/TELUS S3 (SGH-I747/I747M) ONLY!

I'm afraid you need a PC. You don't actually have to be rooted you only need a custom recovery. You also need a PC to do that tho.

I would assume you speaking of the micro end and not the USB port on the computer side? If that's the case will ODIN recognize a com port while in download mode? If your able to do that you will be able to flash a insecure boot image thus allowing ADB commands or use the toolbox in this forum to flash a recovery script. Of your able to do any of these we can get you going again.

I think you should strat by reseting your phone to its original state and you can to this following the tread of the toolbox(i'm browsing woth tapatalk now so i will try to come back and post the link but it should be easy to find). You will use triangle away in the process.
Then update your phone trough samsung kies.

Can you still get to TWRP ? team win recovery ?? ....
But I think Zen's plan will be better.....
Here's the cwm/twrp zip for ucamc3 recovery.... (attached)
Note that the OTA may still fail if it detects anything missing or different than what it expects. In that case, a wipe of /system, then a revert to MA4, may be needed.
You want me to go back to TWRP? I have the stock recovery right now.

The simplest path is to reflash TWRP, then flash the recovery I provided above, then see if the OTA will complete.
You might also be able to get the OTA to complete by running the openscript option from TWRP .. I know DS has had some success with that, but ymmv. If you try this option, you may get more information about where the OTA fails - take note of that and report back.
If that doesn't work then the next option would be to wipe /system and then odin flash UCAMA4. This should get you a clean OTA path to 4.3, and your data and apps should be preserved (although there is some risk). I recommend making backups beforehand in TiBu and then copy your SDCard contents to PC.
Thanks for you help will report back later. have to wait another 20 hours to dl the OTA update again.
You can turn off auto update of network time and set your time ahead 24 hours.
An alternative if ota doesn't work is to flash the stock rooted mk6 package - odin or cwm odex... DS provided a link earlier.
If Knox is a work requirement, you would need to decline SuperSU offers to disable Knox and you would need to run SuperSU and request full unroot.

[Q] Galaxy S3 downgrade from android 4.3 to 4.1.2

I have a T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S3 (SGH-T999) and I made the mistake of allowing an upgrade??? to android 4.3 which has been very unstable for me. T-Mobile, Samsung, and Google all say that there are no updates to 4.3 and I can’t downgrade, so basically I’m out of luck.
Can I downgrade 4.3 to 4.1.2 without bricking my phone and hopefully without voiding my warranty? If so, please give me some instructions. I downloaded Odin 3.07 and firmware: root66_TMO_T999UVDMD5.7z. Thanks a million.
I don't think it's possible to downgrade anymore due to Knox. There was a thread talking about it
Maybe you should check it out.

if you flash the root66 of the md5 firmware via odin after you have already upgraded to 4.3 you will HARD BRICK your phone. Taking the 4.3 ota updates your bootloader and flashing anything other than 4.3 in odin will wreck your life.
You need to download the root66mjc firmware here:
http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23212708291682181
And flash it in odin. Then from there install a custom recovery and download a rom of your choosing and the compatible modem. I recommend you download the md5 modem. Then you're gonna wanna boot into recovery and flash the rom and the modem only (kernels are ok of course) JUST NO BOOTLOADERS. I don't even know if you can do that in recovery but trying to mess with the new BL will brick your face I mean phone.
full steps?
so does anyone have any full list of steps and links on where to get the modems and all to downgrade 4.3 with knox down to 4.1.2

I was referring to the 3 persons who responded to the OP's question similar to yours. @jtl_777's response is pointing to the 4.3 Firmware.
Its more implied in this thread than stated matter of factly. This thread is several months old, and I know your question has been asked countless times in many different threads, much more recently than in this one.
I suggest you read the stickies in each section. Just by doing that you will find all firmware and modems and more. You will also find that the answer is no, you cannot downgrade your full firmware from 4.3. And you never will be able to.
If your having problems I suggest flashing the latest 4.3 build via Odin, then factory resetting. Start over clean with minimal restoring of backups (only the essentials).
Every time an update comes out there are people who have problems. The majority are solved by doing what I just said because most bugs are caused by using old data created by old apps on the new build.
Even if you could downgrade, chances are youd run into even more issues and still have to factory reset.

thanks but I read online and some youtube videos showing that people have gone from 4.3 back to 4.1.2, just trying to make the phone the way it was before any updates were done and wondering if anyone knows the proper steps without bricking the phone.
They probably just flashed a rom. It is simply not possible to downgrade the firmware though.

great thanks so much for your help, can I flash the recovery via odin mobile app or is it safer to do it via pc?
Safer via PC.
It is possible via Mobile Odin. But that's one of the partitions I don't want to mess with when Phone is Booted/
If you know how to use Mobile Odin then it should be fine. I agree that its better to use pc odin if youre not familiar with Mobile Odin. However, it actually doesnt flash the recovery while booted. It flashes the flash kernel which is MO's temp recovery. It then boots to this and flashes. (So, perseus is right in that regard. But I personally love Mobile Odin and find it extremely useful and consider it safe unless you are brand new to all of this).
In fact Mobile Odin is another way you can flash 4.1.2. Itll flash the firmware, but only the system, kernel, recovery and modem. (I didnt bring this up previously because I didnt want to confuse, or go too far too fast).
If youre thinking about flashing recovery via MO, though, you can also instead just flash the rom you found. No need to flash the recovery unless you just want to. Put the rom in the update.zip slot and itll flash just fine.
If any of this is confusing, just stick with the original plan for now. The rest will come easy if you dont rush things.
One more thing, while you can usually update stock without wiping, you may find you have to factory reset after downgrading as the old system was not built for using data created on a new version.

thanks for all the help.. had to do the wipe since it kept showing the samsung logo but after that it booted just fine.

I have tried so many times to downgrade to 4.1.2 using odin but I havent be able to. I always get an error message

[Q] Upgrade from KitKat to Lollipop or Root First?

Hating Sammy atm. I'm getting the notice to update once an hour now. I don't want to update because I'm still testing the phone and want to root KK. Still in my return period but don't want to. Just want the update issue resolved.
Questions/info, etc.
1. Solved.
2. I want to root, but prefer rooting KK, not LP because I like the idea of being able to downgrade later if I really hate LP, and I'm hearing a lot of bad stuff about LP.
3. Not rooting until I'm sure I'm keeping this baby - i.e. no other issues, etc. Samsung can bite me!
4. What would you do?
5. I have previously rooted five devices, but am a beginner at best. This is only my third Samsung and it's very different to root, etc..
6. If anything goes wrong with root I am really screwed because I don't want a Note 5 or a downgrade if I have to use my insurance.
7. I trust the long-term, knowledgeable xda guys so that's who I'm really asking.
8. I don't want a rom, only root and twerp or cwm at some point, but not yet.
9. I would tend to use CF auto-root since it worked for me on the Note 3.
10. I can do a factory reset, but just got it all set up yesterday.
11. Which root and why?
12. Will I be able to downgrade if I update to LP or would I be better off waiting and dealing with the update notice?
I'm on KitKat 4.4.4 and everything is smooth with zero issues.
Pertinent info:
Sprint Carrier
Software version - KTU84P.N910PVPU1ANK2
Hardware version - N910P.05
Thanks in advance. You guys rock and you know it!
Yes you can use CFAutoRoot and even root NK2 stock. I don't recommend it on OG5 root due to the kernel exploit required; hence, boot loops.
If you value Sprint Wi-Fi calling, you may want to consider Lollipop OB7.
If you do update to lollipop, only OB7 will allow downgrade back to KitKat.
Xposed works on stock Odex in KitKat but Lollipop 5.0.1 requires arter97 art framework along with the rovo89 Xposed installer and only works with deodexed ROM.
Warranty void is something you'll have to weigh yourself. I waited a couple of weeks before rooting myself to make sure my phone and firmware was error free. I've mostly used rooted stock myself.
That should help with your no pressure decision.

The hardware on these devices seems really stable. I've only had my Note 3 (my first Note) since 10/2013 and rooted since 10/2014, but everything has been very stable with only app issues that are easily resolved. So I'm less worried about using my Sammy warranty as long as everything stays golden during this 14-day testing phase. I have insurance with Sprint, but as previously mentioned, do not want to end up with a downgrade device (at worst) or a Note 5 (at best).

Xposed is really for those don't like stock or are bugged by things that don't work as expected. If you use Nuance Swype but hate Dragon Dictation, there's a module for that. Want to change functions or theme or volume change audible change bugs you? You can fix that.

Xposed installer installs via apk sideload. OB7 would require deodexed ROM plus another flashable zip that installs the art framework.

If you respond to the prompt in pull-down, it should give a change log with update number? Maybe reboot or go into Settings/System Update?
Once you get rooted and running the ROM you prefer, you can delete the folder below that pertains to your Android version to avoid those update notifications and downloads.
Lollipop= /cache/fota*
KitKat= /data/fota*

Would someone please tell me where to access the activation lock on KitKat4.4.4? I'm going blind from searching and looking at menus. :silly: Not finding it. Admittedly, it's probably me. Getting everything ready for root. TIA!

Reactivation lock started with bootloader OE1 which you wouldn't have with KitKat or OB7. It's found in Settings/Security.
If you have the recent Odin 3.10.x series, in the option tab, there's a OEM unlock that is recommended for those those bootloaders.
For recovery and initial modem flash, the auto reboot shouldn't be checked. Requires a battery pull and 30 seconds wait. For recovery, boot back into recovery. For modem, flash the second time and let it boot on second flash.
The older bootloaders may not require the battery pull for recovery but for the sake of confusion, it's recommended.

Thanks! I may have more questions about the other things you mentioned here later. Thought I was just too tired to find the activation lock.
TWRP
Need help again, please. I have no idea how to install twrp or which one to install for kitkat 4.4.4. I have somehow gotten some app that has put ads on my lock screen and I want to root after factory resetting, but I want to install twrp first. All help appreciated.
Many humble thanks!

Odin CF Auto Root first and then Odin TWRP.

An easier method to get TWRP would be to let the CF Auto Root flash auto reboot and install Flashify in Google Play to use to download and flash TWRP.
