I'm having problems with my HTC One X. The problem was that the WiFi kept switching off whenever I was consuming data (the little WiFi symbol at the top of the screen would disappear and then reappear a second later). This meant that if I was using YouTube or sky go, the video would constantly stop playing and then restart. My phone was sent off to HTC for "repair" and its come back in a worse state. The WiFi symbol continually disappears whenever I'm using it now, meaning that the WiFi is switching off. If I try to download apps from the app store, the WiFi will cut out numerous times during the download and the percentage bar will say "waiting for network" until the WiFi symbol reappears. It's even cutting out if I'm surfing the web. This isn't a problem with my broadband at home because I have numerous other devices that all work fine on the WiFi. I've also tested my phone on a different WiFi network and have the same problem. So the issue clearly lies with my phone. Has anyone else heard of this problem and is there a way of fixing it?

Are you using a different rom or are you with htc original software ?
No, I'm on the original software. I've never rooted it or anything like that. Its an unbranded UK one x.

how old is your phone...is it "old" or what? ...and try at first a factory reset...
I bought it around April last year, so its about 9 months old. Its been factory reset to death by me and HTC when it was sent to them for "repair"

Try to see on the original package of the phone the s/n (only first 4 letters), you should see HTXX...
XX stands for 23, 25, 26...tell me the number you have!

As I suspected...all the devices HT23 seems to be affected by the "wifi problem"!
Start wifi from the phone and wait it connects then try to gentle press in the area at the top of the phone, on the right, near the volume button (under this area there is wifi card).
The wifi should never disconnect until you keep it pressed! Try!

That solution doesn't work with mine unfortunately. Its already been to HTC once for repair and they've apparently done the fix for the well known WiFi problem that you're referring to. It would appear that the fault with mine is something different. I've arranged for them to take it back for repair again. They've said that if they can't fix it this time, they'll replace it.

I got the WiFi problem 6months after purchase, what I did open it up and glued some foil onto the WiFi copper plate and put it together been working perfect ever since. If that fails after some time ill be soldering 2 wires from the pins to the copper plate done deal, my phones been rooted couldn't be stuffed taking the chance with htc repair.

Have you ICS or JB? Because I've found an issue in wifi when I was on ICS...wifi seemed not to work, but once I turned on the bluetooth the wifi magically worked (both wifi and bluetooth turned on--->wifi working / only wifi turned on---->wifi not working)!
However with the update to JB this issue was fixed.

[This is probably only UK related but may be relevant in any Vodafone region]
OK, so Ive posted here and on Modaco a number of times regarding an issue that was driving me nuts. Whenever I moved out of range of a known WIFI ap for more than a few minutes, wifi would just turn off, and not turn itself back on when I came back in range. I would have to manually turn it on before it would connect.
Well, for the past week I have been looking at the various apps on my phone and looked at anything with Wifi permissions and uninstalled each one by one to see if that solved the issue. Nothing changed until I uninstalled the My Vodafone app. Turns out that the issues with my phone auto connecting to BTOpenzone APs are related to the wifi off. The My Vodafone seems to continuously tries connecting to BTOZ APs and after it fails a few times it switches the wifi off it seems. Since its removed my phone has been working normally.
So there you have it. This will mean nothing for most, but hopefully someones sanity will be spared with this info.

I don't have that app, but thanks for letting us know.
My wifi has no problem so far.

Yeah, this stopped happening for me too after uninstalling the My Vodafone app. Maybe that's one of the reasons why they've pulled it from the Android 4.0 marketplace.

I have the same problem OP had but i don't have that Vodafone-app (though i have a Vodafone sim)
How do i change that AP (don't know what that is) setting?
I have a small problem guys....when my phone is in sleep mode i don't get my text messages....as soon as i get the phone awake instantly i receive the texts....what seems to be the problem? need help cz i need to manually wake the phone and look for text messages....
P.S i am on stock with 1.29 latest update.....not rooted or flashed....
I already had a thread but im deleting it and refreshing my question as i have not had any response from anyone except for 1 which is downloading power saver settings but that didn't do anything.....Please help...Thanx....
UPDATE: On some other forum which i was searching for on Google, someone had posted to clear the cache and do a factory reset which i did and still i have the problem...i mean as soon as i manually wake the phone from sleep....i hear the tone and text message light appears....but if there are two texts for example another one coming immediately after the first one, then it notifies for both the texts....
***UPDATE (Possible Fix)*****
After searching thousands of forums i have found the problem to be that of software. Couldn't find a fix for it but found an app on the Play Store that does the trick...The app is call SMSAwake. Write it exactly like this in Play Store and you will find that it works and actually wakes the phone up and text is received. Glad i found something..... Do respond if you find it helpful.....THANKS.....
Yeah I have simmer on my phone if i receive a text phone do not notify me when I get one sometimes it do but loads of times it don't.
I will get the text if i go look in my sms inbox then they show up iv had once where someone sent me a pic and it just disappeared from my messages before I could receive it.
Im on stock untouched this started happening after the ota update from O2 very annoying that this happens think it's a software fault thou.
I had the same with the fb app on other phones never told me of any notification but on my hox it works perfect but texts do what the fb app use to do lol.

I often had this problem on an HTC Touch Diamond with Windows Mobile. What was happening in that case was the text messages were received, but the interrupt from the radio to the CPU didn't always work, or the phone was waking up, but going to sleep a split second before the alert had time to sound.
To the OP, what have you installed by way of applications? Things like battery savers or shutting down tasks using task killers could be the cause.
Regards
Phil

Assuming you guys are using stock ROMs and radios it has to be something specific to the One X and the carrier you're using. It happens all the time because one universal radio designed to work everywhere is bound to have issues occasionally on specific networks. HTC just pushed an update to the Nordic countries that updated their radio so I'm guessing there must have been some specific issues identified. 2.X when it's released will have a new radio so that might help.
I assume the One X has fast dormancy enabled by default. That can be a problem on certain networks that don't support it correctly. Here's a link to a thread on fast dormancy from the SGS3 forum that might help. Beyond that, I'm not sure what else to tell you. All phones don't work equally well on all networks.

So I finally figured out what the issue was. A lot of mobile devices have a hard time connecting to highly secured networks such as wpa2. If you have a wpa, or wpa2 protected router, you can only use numbered passwords. Up to 10 characters. I tried this, and it's the only solution I found. If that still doesn't work, change your wpa2 security to wpa, with a numbered password only.

if you have to use numbers and only 10 chars, it sounds like a router config issue. sounds like you have WEP on rather than WPAx
Wifi busted
I actually have the same issue. Wifi worked flawlessly on gb. On ics every time phone goes to sleep it drops, notification says connected. Toggle wifi off and back on works, phone sleep back off. Tried wifi never, only when plugged in. Switched to 2.4 ghz only tried 5 ghz , too. Linksys ea4500 wpa2/aes(setting) brand new. None of the numerous other devices in the house have any issues. Speeds seem awesome.
Tried factory reset nothing works. Even got sprint to get me a new phone, still no solution other than going back to el29. Currently, running fi03 stock rooted. Scared to try latest fi25. Any other suggestions would be great.

still sounds like a router compatibility issue. See if it happens on a different wifi.
The only way i can successfully stay connected is if there is no security or wep is used. Same router nothing had changed. Again worked flawlessly with EL29 update comes to FF18 and it no longer works. Sprint has said it is a known issue with ics on samsung and htc but no fix. Don't want to give up my security just to use wifi. If i roll back to gb everything works again without changing anything in the router. So i don't believe that is it. Plus, i know all about router settings not a noob. I beleive it to be something in the phone update.

My wife runs fully stock newest release and its fine. Try a different router. routers can have compatibility issues with devices. Also you say "its a known issue" but can you give a source?
I'm not saying its router settings. I'm saying it can be a compatibility issue between router and phone chipset.

I guess i should've mentioned there are 2 of the same phone in the house. Wifi works fine on the other device. Source? As in sprint tech support told me over the phone it was a known issue with samsung and htc devices, not all are affected. This is why sprint decided to replace my old non working phone for the new one.
Not sure why of it were truly a setting inside the router why would one work but not the other? Seems highly improbable to me, just saying. I do appreciate the feedback though.

So two of the same phones. One connects and one doesn't. Interesting. About the tech, seems a pretty wide declaration of an issue. samsung and htc phones. lol. There are a ton of those and its a 'known issue'. If it were a known issue, they would have it tied to a specific phone and wouldn't say 'well err um some phones work and some dont'. lol. Anyway, I don't usually trust those techs.
Back to the issue. If one works and one doesn't... Then it sounds software or still compatibility type issue.
Have you tried these things? If it were me, this what i'd try....
1) I'd reflash your phone's ROM fresh and try again. Full wipe. It's possible the update boinked your wpa_supplicant settings.
2) DHCP: stick a static IP on your android and see what happens. (dont confuse this with a static dhcp lease) DHCP does some interesting things on android phones as far as wakelocks and such.
3) In the router, turn off all the bell and whistle crap... Some of these routers have things like 'afterburner' and things like that. It can cause issues at times. Keep track of what you turn off and obviously if it don't work, turn it back on again.
EDIT:
This is interesting as well. Your not the only one.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1847889&page=4
Try the things I posted but ultimately, you may need to just flash a different ROM version... Doesn't mean you need to go all the way back to EL26. At least you know its not only you...
So I initially called Centurylink, and they told me to change security settings. I did this, and it worked for a short period, but then dropped again. I couldn't figure out why this kept happening, and it had become quite frustrating. Then I realized that I had created a new network with a personalized name and password. My laptops connect fine to that network, but my phone won't, so I connected to the initial network created by Centurylink, and have had no issues. So I can suggest trying that as well. Hope that helps

Same issue for me too, since moving from gb. Running S710.10 S.FI27
I see this on both of the WIFI networks I connect with regularly. Home is worse. Every other device at home, including phones, PCs, TVs, tablets: mine and guests, can connect and stay connected just fine. My Epic 4g with ICS can't stay connected to save it's life.

different rom? mine never ever disconnects running cm10.
Set up both home networks using WPA/WPA2-PSK and no issues. Did have issues at work with WEP so perhaps that's the offending solution? If so try TKIP instead.

Gone in FI25/FI27 - looks like it won't be re-appearing until JB, at least if FI10 was accurate in this respect.
I always have to reboot or turn to airplane mode to get it responsive again.
Its annoying cuz first, yay I can browse happily and fast, but after a few page, the data icon will stuck(arrow up and down wont change, stayed on white colors), which made every connection error.
Rooted/Unlocked/Custom rom/Custom kernel. Tried every baseband available but same trouble.
Is it related to faulty sim card? or is it my network is the problem? tried other carrier and worked fine though.
and fyi, AOSP gave less problems except connection drops sometimes(which is related to AOSP thing I guess) but data hang is not frequent. On Sense, every single time!
+1
Happens to me as well from time to time.
Anyone knows what is the cause?

I called my telco and ask them to check the connection with my number. they said its unstable and improperly connected. so they rebooted the (I dont know what they called) and etc. Rebooted my phone, turn on data, and damn it worked! Speedtest gave me average of 7-8 mbps for download. i rarely get that. now no more hung up. now i'm in love with my hox back. never thought thats the problem since other phones are working well previously.

Not sure if it's just me, but on my Nexus I am connected to wifi while at work and at home. When the screen turns off so does my data about 10% of the time. When I turn the screen back on it will show just the cell bars (full signal) with no data icon (H, 3G, E, etc.) and no wifi symbol. After unlock it will try and re-connect and eventually does. In my wifi settings I have keep wifi on during sleep set to "always", and wifi optimization turned off (<-- not sure what this does).
Anybody else with this issue?
Yeah I get this issue too after the update...even with WiFi sleep set to never....and the new option for WiFi performance switched off! Any help devs?

Same for me, but try this : (this is what i do)
go to wifi settings and turn it on, wait for it to connect then turn it off, then on again.
this solves it for me but i have to do this every time i want to connect to a wifi network
This always happens to me too I just thought it was because of the new wifi-optimization so I never thought twice about it...

I am having the same problem.
Now that this is buried in Q&A I expect that it won't been seen as much.
Could any deva compare the driver for the WiFi from 4.1 and check the changes using a code compare app? Should be Peru ready if someone can tell me how to get at the code inside the files I could do it..... It might help

Same problem here, any fix/solution for it?
judging from responses I guess many have tried/failed to find resolution.
in my case, and I THINK it is since 4.2.1 - can't prove it - the reception is just abysmal on my home ap [repeated, one single ap id/login]. nexus 7 beyond about 4 meters from any of the devices gets a flaky connection, will drop, reconnect in the background repeatedly. if I use wifi analyzer on the nexus it shows a "fair" signal at that spot - use it on a better device and of course it shows a better [green] signal .. surprise surprise.
my geriatric Optimus P509, the galaxy s4g, ipad mini, and venerable thinkpad x120e get good signal on the very spot.
I've tried off/on wifi, cache clearing - no sacrificial animals however...
any clues out there?
oh, and as some few others have noted, I get a different signal indication in portrait mode vs. landscape, no matter how my fingers are arranged. and just the act of flipping it into the horizontal will cause a disconnect/reconnect.

same problem, don't know how to solve. I guess (just guess) it may be relavent to power management, because it often happens at night, when I left the phone untouched for several hours. I think during this long period of time the phone goes into some kind of "power saving mode", which affects the wifi and data connection.
I'm in the same boat, I've got the same problem with mi wifi. Everything works great, except when I turn off the screen and my wifi begins to act crazy turning on/off all by itself.
I've tried latest aokp latest cm 10.1, different kernels but nothing. I'm thinking to go back to 4.1.1 to see will the issue still be there.
Report back if it works good in 4.1.1.

After flashing back to CM 10.0, everything is working perfect again, no wifi issues at all.
So it's a 4.2.1 issue... Maybe a modem + 4.2.1 issue? Or is this issue specific only for a few devices?
I'm using LF1 modem.

I have the same wifi issue as well. When the phone is asleep wifi will drop and I don't get email notifications. I'm thinking about going back to 4.1 as well.
Try to untick the wifi optimization. Mine one seems ok, without wifi drop after untick it.

I'll give it a shot, but I think that I have already tried that.

I tried this too but it didn't helped. Yesterday I've flashed rasbeanjelly and my WiFi worked fine, but today again WiFi drops everytime my GN is in deep sleep.
Don't know what to try or do next...
