What I'm trying to do, I didn't think was very difficult. But I'm a noob so what do I know. I've been trying to figure this out for months now.
I would like move a widget I like from the old Gingerbread firmware to my ICS 4.0.4. version. It's a system app so I can't just download from the Play Store.
I have Titanium Backup as well as Root Explorer. So can someone just give me the steps needed to do this. Much appreciated.
Download the Rom you want to get the app from, extract it, move to system apps, reboot, fix permissions, enjoy!

First off, thanks for the reply. Ok, I have no problems downloading the ROM. My issue is how to extract the app. Any insight on that?
Also, I've tried finding the app before (it's the touchwiz power savings widget app) but I can't find it. I read on another thread it's located in settings.apk. So would I extract settings.apk, or would I need to find the files to extract within settings.apk. Thanks for the help.

Download the ROM and open the zip. Then open the system folder and go to the app folder, then find the app you need and extract it. Then if on your phone if should ask to go to extracted and them your apk should be there.

When you download the ROM its downloaded as a zip file just open it and go to system/apps and extract the app you want.

OK, I'm making progress! I extracted the app I wanted. I was told the power savings widget I want is located within settings.apk. The problem is when I tried to install it, it said 'Application not installed. An existing package by the same name with a conflicting signature is already installed.'
I tried to uninstall it with Titanium Backup, but when I try to install the new system app it just gives me 'not installed', without any explanation. So basically I'm wondering how to replace a system app if they have conflicting signatures?
Any ideas?

Where can I download the Stock TW?
i used SGS tools and it screwed up my TW launcher and I couldn't restore it.
where can I find it?
thanks
I thought that SGS Tools backed up the original TW Launcher to the SD card?
EDIT:
Yes it saves to the SD card, it saves the original to /sdcard/sgstools/ according to the app.
One problem with that. It didn't restore it so I deleted this folder after I unistalled the app. Now I'm trying to find this apk with odex file sine I'm not able to install any TW apk unless its update.zip.

I'm looking for this .apk as well, I just updated to Kezraplane's Optimized Galaxy W Stock V2 and there is no email client, I know I could get one from the marketplace but the default client supports my hotmail accounts without any messing about.
Here you go. Hope it's the right one.

This Is a system app and has to be installed on the rom it self.
If not it just won't work.

Due to a comment made about the .apk by KezraPlanes, who built the ROM I'm using, I'm sure that the installer can be obtained and will probably be installed using RzRecovery, I only asked on this thread to help the OP and myself get an answer.
Don't get me wrong i'm only trying to give you the correct answer ;-)
If apps not are in the ROM where they should be normally you have to flash them in the operating disc.
Another solution would be to copy the right files into the operating system.

You can't install the apk like you can with a user-level app, because this is a system app.
You need to copy the .apk (and the associated .odex file if there is one) directly to /system/app. To that you need to be root, and you need a root-capable file explorer which can re-mount the system partition as writeable. ES File Explorer on the market works fine - check the settings to re-mount the partition as writeable, then copy the file(s) to where they need to be
I believe you can also push the file into /system/app using adb, but that's probably more complicated and risky than using a file explorer on your device.

Nice iam finding for that so long....
thank I very much.
I need it, too.
Hello,
I used the search, it came up with a black theme MMS taken from a CM rom. When I DL the file it was a zip file.
So, I flashed it thru CWM, but it wont take it - installation was aborted.
I've got a rooted stock T-mobile ROM. Can anybody know where I can find a mod to change the stock mms to a black theme mms. A black themed dialer will also be cool to have.
thanks in advance.

All you had to do was change the .zip to. Apk
Push it over the current mms.apk or use root explorer to delete the current apk and place the new one in and reboot

In simple terms; take out the apk from the Gapps package and either cut or copy it. Now, navigate to your ROM's system/app/ directory, and paste the gallery2.apk there. The phone should be booted up the whole time while doing the above. Now, reboot your phone. That's it!

Because that's not how you're supposed to install the apk. Use the instructions I posted above on how to do it.
i took out the gallery 2 apk from all star apps. i pasted it in my roms system/app which overwrite the original one there and i rebooted my phone. nothing is installed on my phone i have no camera now.

Hi guys, i am new to xda. I have a problem with my Samsung Galaxy S II with stock jelly bean 4.1.2 (***LSW firmware version). I accidentally deleted my settings application (i converted it to user app by using rom toolbox and it disappeared). I have no backups so i was looking for someone who could extract a new "Settings.apk" compatible with my device and firmware version so that i could reinstall it. Thanks in advance to everyone!

have you look into your root folder then data/app to find setting.apk, or use titanium backup to convert back to system app
Yes, as i said in the first post i have no backup and the system/app folder doesn't contain any settings.apk. It disappeared completely. I also looked for it on the web but no one seems to have uploaded it online. This is the reason why I have posted here.
Please can anybody help me? I can't believe no one has got this phone here on xda..

If nobody can help you. Try it yourself. Download the firmware and find a way to extract the files. (can be done, cuz the phone can too)
Hi, I have linked the SecSettings.apk from stock 4.1.2 xxlsw.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/9h3seu88m8yh35b/SecSettings.apk
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Thank you very much! But i'm not missing "SecSettings.apk" i miss "Settings.apk". Don't you have one in your root folder?
There is no Settings.apk in any folders. Is your ROM definitely Stock Samsung 4.1.2?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I looked for SecSettings in my folder and i think i confused it with SecSettingsprovider..so maybe the settings app is just called secsettings (unlike many other phones) i'll try to install your apk!
I downloaded your application and it seems to be what I was looking for! But I can't install it in way! How do I install it?
Use a root explorer and copy it to /System/app and set permissions in the usual manner
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I moved the apk to system/app and set the permissions, then rebooted, but it seems that it doesn't work. I tried in many ways. I installed it from rom toolbox, from root explorer, from "system app installer", but despite every operation and installation gives me a succes message as response, nothing happens. There is the file in system app, but every attempt to open the settings fails with a force close and there is no icon in my app drawer.
Do you have the secsettings.odex in your /system/app?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
No I don't have any SecSettings.odex, I only have apk, even after the reboot.
Copy both the SecSettings.apk from the previous link and the SecSettings.odex from this link, set permissions and reboot again.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/8y5m880tvzg0trx/SecSettings.odex
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
It didn't work. I used every combination on this world for the permissions before rebooting (including rw-r--r-- and also rwxrwxrwx) but nothing happens, the app doesn't result to be installed. (I attached a screenshot of my file manager showing that the files actually are in the root folder)
Hmm.. I'm stumped then. I can only suggest you reflash your firmware
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I just read on google news that a new update is starting to roll out for the s2..do you think updating will solve the problem? Either by using OTA (if it still works without settings) or kies..
