Worse battery life with CM 10? - LG Nitro HD

Has any one else experienced worse battery performance with CM10 vs Stock?

Yes. That tends to be one of the bigger complaints about CM10.

i think cm10 is default tailored more towards performance, you can tweak it or go with a liquid rom if your concern is battery life, i also recomend taking a look at something like this:
http://www.droidxforums.com/forum/droid-x-hacking-guides/14714-how-optimize-battery-life-speed.html
this guy seems to know his stuff, i personally prefer performance over battery life thats why i own a p930 to begin with. but i perform the battery calibration twice a month using his steps, and ive seen it improve my battery life durastically, you might want to start there and tweak according to your needs.

It has been reported that cm10 kernel keeps waking up the phone, i.e. no real deep sleep, causing a more drastic battery drain. work is being done to fix all the bugs with cm10, you may give Quattrimus a try, I found it very good with battery, especially true for rc2 (last version):good:

I cant edit the post so here is the link to Quattrimus. good luck!

interesting never heard this, since 10.1 releases are starting to come out, the real question now is, have they fixed that bug for 10.1, the answer is probably yes if they were aware of it in 10.0 but it would be nice if someone knows for sure
edit was just spelling

Even factory ICS is not as great as Gingerbread. But yeah, running CM10, my P930 feels like a space shuttle ... in that it must remain tethered right until takeoff.

I'm still seeing major battery drain in 10.1. Rom is incredibly smooth and very quick with oc kernel bit battery life is terrible just like cm10

your probably using it more if you just installed it no? how long have u been testing it

If I had just done a bit more research on CM10 for the Nitro I probably wouldn't have put it on there. Oh well. The good this is that I do have JB now.

DS battery saver provides decent battery life with moderate use. Now all we need are fixes to the kernel/ROM to provide better battery life when actually using the phone because DS battery saver is mainly for screen off.

I always use my phone heavily; regardless of testing or not. Ive established a pretty good baseline for how my battery performs with almost every rom available for our device evenly l except cm10+. On most other Roms I can get around two hours of constant use, cm10 half that

I noticed my phone gets HOT on CM10. Haven't tried any CM10.1 ROMs yet. I'm guessing the kernel needs a bit of tinkering to get it running efficiently with our hardware. Battery drains fast even idling. I don't think the phone ever goes to deep sleep.

It definitely goes deep sleep, according to better battery stats app anyway. I'm really digging cm10.1, especially oc'd using windkernal (scoring 4000+ in quadrant consistently). The nitro is a complete beast right now, but I dunno if I can afford to sacrifice the battery life so drastically for a little performance.

Battery life poor except for stock

I give up.every ROM I run just doesn't have the battery life expected. Am I expecting to much? Not even Cauks or blazer el29 doesn't give the battery life as stock.don't get me wrong they are all great roms but at least for my device not battery friendly. I'll post some battery stats from BBS if anybody has some free time to see what's going on. I'm on Cauks el29 now.I format everything before flashing and I use cauks format all many times. I'm on the verge of staying on stock roll my eyes.

Well when is the last time you used stock? And if it's been quite a while...consider having your battery checked out. Anyway, I'll continue as if your battery is fine from here on out. Basically, anything but stock tends to have a modified kernel. Even with all the battery tweaks, etc out there, there's a chance that the kernel itself might not play well with your phone. I'm not too versed in that, but I also noticed that the TouchWiz based ICS kernels/ROMs give MUCH better battery life than AOSP based kernels/ROMs such as CM9 and AOKP, etc. This is just basic stuff you might already know, but yeah, just go on and post your battery stats, preferably with a custom rom and a stock rom so we can see the difference and where it lies. Also, I'm running Touched by a Galaxy S3 on my phone and with moderate use (music for maybe a few hours a day, texting, don't really make many calls) I average between 8.5 and 11 hours from 100 to 0. Another thing I'd suggest is download CPU Spy from the Android market, or something similar if you prefer, and post screenshots from that on the custom ROM; the problem with AOSP and certain other GB and TW ICS roms that i've seen is that something prevents the processor from going into deep sleep mode, usually keeping it at 200mhz or higher. Lastly, when you use the custom roms, do you notice the phone getting really hot compared to the stock roms?
I'm assuming you know this but are you letting the battery cycle a few times before passing judgement? I usually spend a week on a rom before I decide if I have good/bad battery life... attached screenie is normal for me with moderate use on mijjhs goodness rom

I always had faster battery drains on ROMs than stock. I see all this awesome battery stats screenshots but noticed they all share one common factor, only 1hrs to 30min screen use. Come on guys why I would want that battery life if to get it I have to barely use the phone makes no sense to me.

Agree, everyone have different experiences, I haven't try that ROM yet, I will test it out later. Have a nice day/night sir.
Sadly I have to agree with OP.
And the previous screenshots at 59% with 1hr, 36 screen on is exactly the issue.
Hard to compare your battery stats with mine since screen on time for my phone will be 4+ hours.
Since there are no standardized testing anyone can do with any rom, any speculation on which rom has better battery life or doesn't is just pure bogus seat of the pants gut feelings.
If there were a standard test that ran like. 5 minutes of mail with 20 mails received, 10 minutes download, 30 mins of playing the exact same video, 13 music tracks of the exact same song all with screen, vibration, brightness, etc all at the exact same level, you could get a real test, but, alas, nobody has a standardized test.
For MY usage, stock clocks in at the same as or better than just about any other rom I've tried, including all the various super scripts out there.
I guess I just overuse my phone!

Things drain battery. This is my test off wifi for the most part using the phone as a phone with average use. Didn't even log in to Google on this one. Just proof that intensive applications, google services, and anything else added after a "factory flash" can manipulate battery life significantly.
Oh, and check out drain when I'm in less than ideal coverage. Noticeable difference. One huge factor to consider when diagnosing battery life.
It really depends on what you're doing with the phone. Obviously having brightness up playing heavy games with Wimax on will kill battery faster than someone on low brightness reading an ebook with wifi on. That said, i agree that I've had better battery life stock than almost all ics roms.

[Q] Rom or Kernel

I know alot of people ask which is the best combi, but i dont care about that.
im wondering which one really affects the battery more, the rom or the kernel?
im looking for more battery life and i constantly try many roms and kernels to find the best, but its all very erratic so im wondering which one i should change and look for increase in battery life more
tks

99% of the time it'll be the kernel that changes your battery life (exception being if you're running a poorly written ROM, which is unlikely). Kernels give you the ability to tweak your phone for better performance or better battery or any combination of the two, whereas ROMs more or less just change the user interface. I have gotten pretty good battery life on Tiny's kernel, so you could try that, but you could ask 20 people, and you'll get 20 different answers for the best kernel haha
Yep its said kernel affects battery. My experience over a multitude of android devices says neither have a noticeable effect on battery life. I flash kernels for other reasons, not battery life. I've always gotten similar battery life on stock setup vs any combination of ROM/kernel. Maybe SLIGHTLY less battery if the kernel was geared for performance, but never have I seen a noticeable increase in life.

Biggest battery draw is going to be the one you didn't mention. Apps. Specifically the ones that run in background syncing data all the time. Try a little experiment by going to your mobile data usage, setting a limit and then disabling background data and auto sync. You'd be surprised how much battery Google now sucks down

You have barely any screen time! Also...you have something keeping your phone awake....big time! Should check that out! You're battery will last even longer if you get your phone deep sleeping!
I usually get 30 hours or so with around 4 hours screen time ....and really...it doesn't vary much no matter what rom I'm on.
That's with my use anyway. Games will drain your battery quick...also no matter what rom you're on.
I'd say use whatever rom appeals to you...I think drastic battery difference among roms is an urban legend.

I heard about the charger issue. I've gotten in the habit for awhile now of always rebooting after a charge. Haven't had sleep issues on any rom with rebooting after a charge.
I do agree that some roms and kernel are better on the battery....but it seems like a minor increase...not enough to influence my choice in roms anyway. I choose a rom that has what I need it to have, has good support, an active thread with dev active in thread....plus dev track history plays some role....I do tend to stick with certain devs.
For me anyway....my 30 hour average....3 1/2 to 4 1/2 screen time has been consistent on any jb rom I've tried. But hey....others may have different experiences.

I am also running eugene's dual core sleeper app though I have not tested the build without the sleeper app. screen on battery use is going to be a pig, only an hour or so of difference between roms/kernels...

The recent changes Hash made to the 3.0.x kernel is now comparable in battery consumption to IR's tweaked CM7 kernal. With the right settings, I can achieve only 10% battery drain per hour of continual use.....which is great for an aging tablet

No two phones work the same. I've had my S3 for about 2 weeks and have run Stock-rooted, and e few custom roms. I have 4 email accounts-pushed, 10 screen widgets, and always texting, web surfing, etc. I'm currently at 14 hours with 49% remaining. When I work in spreadsheets, and use a a reader, (usually 2 hours each) I still get 14-16 hours, no matter what rom/kernel I've been running

When I work in spreadsheets, and use a a reader, (usually 2 hours each) I still get 14-16 hours, no matter what rom/kernel I've been running

You just need to find the ROM and kernel combo that works well with your phone. I have tried ROMs/kernel combos that some get excellent battery life from but mine is horrible and vice versa. Keep testing as it is a trial and error type thing. Also your kernel settings can make huge differences. What works for one may not work well with your phone. Different settings on the same kernel may net you excellent results.

I have noticed battery life tends to vary wildly depending on ROMs and even people. I guess I don't use my phone all day long, but on a TouchWIZ 4.1 ROM, the app "Battery Left" (from Play Store, its free) reports that I can get up to 46 hours on a full charge, based on my typical usage patterns (and if I use Greenify). On the other hand, I have used an AOSP 4.2.2 ROM in the past (such as LiquidSmooth), and Battery Left will tell me, after a few days, that I will get about 25 hours on a full charge (again, with Greenify). I have to do more testing, but there is definitely some difference between ROMs and battery life...

Guess mine is too...
I read this thread & thought battery life has as much to do with what's running in terms of synching, background data, services, connectivity etc.

I am using one of the unofficial CM11 ports that is supported nightly and have been getting terrible battery life. I hate to ask the question which is the "best", but what would be a good kernel to flash?
I do not do much heavy gaming either. In fact, I do not do any gaming. Just casual browsing.

Well before I suggest any kind of "good kernel to flash" I want to make note of something. If you're running a nightly of an unsupported version of CM11 then don't expect great battery life. This has little to do with what you're doing on the phone but the purpose of nightly's is to have users report bugs. Many of these bugs are the kind that can drain battery rather quickly. So the first thing I'd do is find a stable AOSP rom to run on before thinking about kernels.
That being said, a kernel universally accepted as "good" is KT747 by Koonsez

Thanks for the reply bud. I personally like supporting the nightly versions of ROMs but I wasn't thinking the reporting that I do is causing that much of a battery drain.
I may consider today to go to a stable AOSP ROM that isn't nightly.

I have been flashing ROMs now for the past 4 years. I have never really got into the nitty gritty of anything specific but probably best I do. One question I had in regards to all these ROMs is, do they not come with their own Kernel which I would have assumed is the best recommended for the given ROM. When i see battery life of 14+hrs with room to go, I must be doing something wrong.
Thank you for any info in advance.
