So I know amoled screens save battery power the darker the backgrounds are. Are the tft screens that the g2 have the same way or is it the exact opposite?
This stirred my curiosity and was hoping one of you could answer this. Thanks guys.

I saw a thread like this on iPD
I think the best is black but someone was arguing white so if not go for grey
Neither is true for traditional lcd screens. The backlighting is ALWAYS on so it doesnt matter what color is being displayed on the screen if im correct
I believe that PURPLE is the best color... No, Im just kiddin I honestly think that this is hogwash and that its all about opinion. I think as long as you do not use a live wallpaper you are good. So Just keep that in mind.
Thanks for feeding my curiosity guys XD
I'm not really worried about battery life. This battery is just about as good as my old MT3G, which was way better than my old G1 and HD2.
Was just curious because I saw review videos of them saying how the battery life will be better with 2.3 on the Nexus S due to it being amoled and having black touches throughout the interface.
Black takes more power to display than white. It has nothing to do with the backlight though. It's only about a 3% power savings though.
What is it that makes an LCD pixel change color? Is it a different frequency or a slight adjustment in voltage that does it? I don't know too much about it but it seems that it would need to be either one of those two right?
Wouldn't that mean that power could be saved if you tried to theme with a color that uses a lower voltage to trigger? Or frequency for that matter..

If that were the case...I believe red would be your best bet... Give it a try and tell us what happens!

Lol. I have been using red actually. I have decent battery life already. Just switched to green, we'll see how that goes.

I've been wondering this to I always had a black wallpaper for my vibrant and I haven't really changed the wallpaper on my g2. I get better battery life if I use the HTC live wallpaper for some reason lol

That is just the answer I was looking for. Thanks!

Since screen consumes a good chunk of the total battery percentage, I've been reading some things on the internet and it seems like people are saying black color theme consumes less battery power than other colored themes, but only on a certain type of LED. If so, does the MT3GS has that type of screen and does black color theme really saves more battery for our phone?
some other odd stuff: first one is what happens when i leave my phone on in a lecture hall for an hour... second one is just my screen going weird.
That is for AMOLED screens and you have to use a mod that uses true blacks and what that is, is instead of using backlit blacks it just doesn't use those pixels and so that increases battery life. (And AMOLED is used on higher end devices so no the MT3GS doesn't have it.)

Ah, thanks very much!
I have become satisfied with the battery life on my AMOLED inc, but the power button is screwed up so I am getting a new/refurbished one. I am not sure if it will be AMOLED or SLCD, but I am excited either way.
Does the SLCD get the same or better battery life? Is the only other difference between the two that some recoveries don't work with it...
I may be wrong but I've never heard any blaring differences between the two, yet this is with my experiences.
If there is any battery saving difference I haven't noticed any. I got one of the first SLCD units and the battery life is just as bad as before.
For some reason I have it in my head that amoled has better battery with dark colors and lcd with whites. I think I read it in regards to lcd and led tvs.
Sent from my Incredible using XDA App
As far as I know, AMOLED's are better when displaying black colors. Because the pixels don't light up thus saving power. But on the downside when displaying white (Such as a web page) it can use up to 3x more power. The SLCD on the other hand is more neutral. It uses the same power with all colors. Because the blacks light up, but the white doesn't use any more power than the others.
Correct me if I'm wrong. That's just what I've read somewhere along the line.
I think lcd's work by always displaying white then use power to block certain colors out.thus blocking every color, ie black, uses the most. At least that'd what I always thought.

AMOLED on average has better battery life through most tests I've found, but the principles of what you're viewing has a large affect on it. I prefer dark backgrounds as it is, but if you're using a lighter background and have your screen unlocked often it's going to drain a bit more than it would if you had say, a black or dark gray background. The differences are really going to be minimal in everyday usage.

Bikrame is ABSOLUTELY right bro, also take it from me, I used to be a DIE HARD HTC fan, however, after countless years and devices later I just got sick and tired of waiting for them (HTC) to get their **** together. One can only take so much disappointment before they lose all hope and walk away. I've owned only the latest and greatest of HTC phones on the market, and it was only a matter of inevitable time before the random reboots, crashes and frozen screens come into play, you just get fed up of having to constantly take out the battery to fix your phone... SAMSUNG definitely gets the everyday needs of real world use. Love my SGS3 !!!
Just take a quick look at the link below if you're still not convinced bro... In the end, the choice is totally yours to make... We here at XDA just try to help and inform each other the way family would. Best if luck though bud.

Super AMOLED HD
You’ve probably heard lots of press regarding this display as it’s been the frontman for Galaxy S phones for quite some time now. One of the best features about these display panels is that their black levels are*unparalleled–that is to say that when displaying black, the screen is practically off. This results in much richer detail in images (it’s black level, not white level that increases this quality). Combined with very high brightness and great viewing angles, the result is excellent contrast ratio which makes Super AMOLED displays perform valiantly in the outdoors. You may also hear people describe Super AMOLED colors being “vibrant” and/or “punchy,” which is also due to this great contrast ratio. There are some drawbacks however to this display tech. Due to the nature of how the colors are delivered, Super AMOLED tend to be blue/greenish in color repdouction, which can be unwanted for those preferring neutral color balance. In addition, although the display consumes little power when displaying black, web browsing–which predominantly uses a white background–saps battery life disproportionately quickly. Finally, the display of the Galaxy S III uses a PenTile grid, which decreases*the*actual number of subpixels used on the display (and thus the pixel density)–this is noticeable at high*magnifications, but for most users will go unnoticed.
Super LCD 2
Super LCD 2 is a great all around screen as well. Although it doesn’t have killer black levels or astounding brightness, it has great white balance and accurate color reproduction as well as a true RGB subpixel layout which renders the finest bit of detail. In Chris Ziegler’s review of the One X, he notes that the Super LCD 2 display “[has]*got a near-perfect 180 degree viewing angle and perhaps the most accurate color reproduction and color temperature available…” and furthermore, “At 720p, it falls well into ‘retina’ territory where the individual pixels become invisible to the naked eye.”ConclusionIf the Galaxy S III’s display was a Super AMOLED HD Plus with an RGB stripe display, this debate would simply be a matter of whether you prefer color accuracy or vibrancy of the display, with which the argument could be made that while important for computers, color accuracy is not [as] important on a phone and thus the Super AMOLED’s colors are more*aesthetically*favorable. However taking the PenTile arrangement into account, the rest of the factors can seem to be a moot point to many buyers, especially when they see images like this:
The truth is, unless you have microscopic vision or are purposely looking for image artifacts, there is no way you are going to notice a difference on the screen.
After all of that, it boils down to a matter of personal preference

I actually do notice the difference though. Samoled hd has deeper blacks and whiter whites than the slCD2. So in the contrast category, Samsung wins imo. Although color reproduction, the slcd 2 had more natural tones.

If I spend a lot of time with my screen on does the color of the background wallpaper have a measurable effect on battery life? I've heard that a plain black background uses the lowest power. Is it a big enough deal to give up a nice background screen?
I don't think there is much if any difference in battery life based on the background picture. Brightness along with screen time affects this phone more then anything else.

I would assume that a live background would make a difference in battery though. Iv always used a black background since my G1 but thats just because I like it but u could always do a test and see if it does effect battery compared to different colors.

With our AMOLED screens having a darker background actually does help. I was reading up on something where when u have a black pixel, the cpu instead of turning that pixel color black, it shuts off the pixel.... So it should save some power. As for color regarding solely on processor use, id say its very minute and shouldnt effect ur power consumption that much
