Which has the best battery? Gingerbread, ICS or JB? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

I have an old 989 that I keep as a backup so it pretty much sits idle all the time. I only have grooveip on it so it can act as a "home" phone and was curious as to which is the more efficient software. Ive had it using a dark side GB rom for a while and was wondering if there were any improvements over the last few softwares. Thanks

If you want a Rom just for calling I recommend finding three lightest weight, with the least amount of features possible. Don't get all star v7, feature heavy.
-------------------------------------
ROM: All-star ROM v7
Kernel: Lighting
Radio: LB7 blaze
-------------------------------------
I'm trying to make an app, message if you are willing to help!

Thats why I was wondering if there was a difference between the three so I can start from there to see within either GB, ICS, or JB which had the most minimal rom that had an efficient kernel attached to it

I'd say SPEEDbean all-star.. no mods, super lightweight, call quality is good.

Gb is android 2.x, not as updated, not many features. Ics is 4.0.x which is updated with some features. Jb is 4.1.x which is feature filled. If you want good quality with few features get darkside evolution. I love this old Rom.

If you are only using the phone for a home phone. Who cares about it can do stick with get darkside digital warfare 2.7. Strip out everything that isn't needed and I have gotten 5 days with that before. No ICS and jellybean has been that good for me. Fun to use as a dd but if your not doing that then there is no point in it. Jut going to use more battery to run features you don't use.

Ya I recommend darkside roms also, that were like stock but more tweaks. The battery life is insane on them

Good Kernels For Stock Rooted

I just bought the SIII on Thursday and have been in the EVO line for awhile now and don't really know what devs to keep an eye on... I am looking for a good Kernel that will allow me to clock, volt and if possible w/ sbc! Any and all suggestions are welcome as I will probably try them all... Also are there any stable ROMS that I should take a look at as well?

Freegs3 that's honestly all you need no need for underclocking or anything with the cpu the rom is fast stable I haven't been found a bug yet it has a ton of support ton of people willing to answer your questions and you will get 13+hours of battery with a few minor adjustments

Its the name of the ROM. Its by freeza. I consider freeza a dev to keep ur eye on.
As far as the kernel goes, if your on stock(or any touchwiz rom) your choices are limited but the best kernel for battery life is the stock kernel anyway.

Jamal717 - So, you like the Freegs3 ROM? I haven't tried it yet...I'm not a Sonic fan...I'm concerned Sonic pics would be themed within the ROM. (Are they?) Maybe I should give it a try, though. So far, I have flashed:
1. JellyBomb Domination, v7.0 (Decent)
2. JB Goodness, v4.0 (Fav so far)
3. Frankenstein KilLJoy, v1.0 (Current ROM...enjoying it)
I'm still new to rooting, so I am not even attempting the under/overclocking kernel piece yet.

i'm on freegs3. i didn't want a themed rom full of tweaks and stuff that don't benefit me, that's why i went with his. it has auto update capability, and the few tweaks that are included you can choose to install or not during the install process. the only sega themed item is the boot animation, which you can change if you want very easily, he gives a list in the thread. check it out, it's definitely more stable than my stock rom was, it was crashing every 5 minutes. this is great.

The best ROM?

actually I'am on Darkside Evolution 3 v8, at this time which is the best Rom? I look for a stable ICS ROM, I think JB isn't ready...
thanks
I haven't tried all the ROMs, but JB is definitely ready. I would never go back to ICS. I personally like the cm10 based ROMs. GPS is the only buggy feature. JB is so much smoother than ICS, its like a diff OS.
I'm running cm10 with flapjaxx kernel. OC'd to 1.67ghz.
With v6 supercharger script @25% supercharged.

I was on the darkside rome too,the same one. Switched to slim bean rom that has jellybean and enjoying it! You should try it out, also with the kko kernel.
Honestly.. JB is much faster, snappier and smoother. But... if you value battery life, stay on darkside evolution. I would definitely try them out though. Just nandroid back up and try liquid, cm10, or AOKP. All excellent. But like I said, as far as battery life goes, Dark side is still my go to.

If you value battery and responsiveness or stability I'd suggest you stay where your at. I've used all the jelly bean variants for days at a time and they all have presented 1 issue or another. Some would argue there problem free but occasional graphic glitches, ****ty battery, no wifi calling, call echo , gps problems, no flash support, and low speaker volume are some problems I'm willing to bet money you have at least 4 of these issues. Ive just got around to using Evolution 3.8 after hearing rave review and I must say its clearly the best TW rom and possibly the best rom I've ever ran on this phone. If you don't mind cm9 I'd suggest giving the Xperian Rom a go its stupid smooth and unbelievable battery life for a non touch wiz rom. FYI slim bean and liquid smooth rc 7 do kick ass so if do try JB thats where its at.

Hands down Cyanogen Mod 10 Stable.
Made me fall in love with my phone all over again.
I have tried nearly every popular rom for this phone and was getting tired of the glitches, quarks, force closes and other issues associated with them.
Tried CM10 2 months ago and I would never go back.
Jellybean is definitely the best, and CM10 is rock solid, most functional, stable, fast rom I have ever used on any phone.
Give it a try and you will understand.

I'm eager to try one or more of them. Being more of a theorist than an experimentalist , by any chance ... is there anywhere that summarizes/compares them in one place? Especially with some commentary. That would be awesome.
Barring that (or even a thread that goes into a discussion of (some of) the differences), I guess I'll just pull up all the OPs and make a spreadsheet or something. :nerd:

I tried Jedi Knight 6 and had issues with the ROM freezing on shutdown or reboot. Flashing with TWRP fixed the problem for me, Clockwork Mod Recovery caused hangups.
There seems to be random issues with pictures not showing up in the gallery. Also although not a problem I didn't like that the name of the application under the icons on the home screens have been removed, and there seems to be no way to restore them.
I've been running Jedi Knight 6 for about a month now....I've had no issues with gallery pictures missing and I used Apex instead as my launcher so that I can customize my hometown the way I like it and I get the names under the app icon. I'm averaging 11 hours of battery time with about 4 to 6 hours of screen on time and over 300 apps on my phone. I know I can tweak things even more to get better battery life but I just don't know how. Hope that helps some.

Unofficial slim bean. Lightning zap kernel. Love it!
ptmr's Koodo ROM V3 is my go-to for close to stock 4.0.4 touchwiz... get ~24 hours of use with ~4 hours screen time, though i'm convinced "canadian" based ROMs work better on our phones
I think it's on par with TDJ's Telus 4.0.3 ROM for stability and performance... i just always found the contacts/favorites/dialer organization on 4.0.3 annoying
Have to go with CM10.0 or even nightlies. I have been dirty flashing CM10 nightlies for a while and very very rarely get a FC or RR. For OC or to add some governors and schedulers, try a nice kernel to go with

In my opinion, it's all preference. I decide which ROM is best for my phone by the amount of support and regular updates the developers offer for the ROM. At the moment, I would have to say I am enjoying ROMs produced by the All-Star team, they have always been there to answer any questions.
Good luck to everyone trying to find their "best" ROM. Cheers!

What made Darkside so great was that TDJ incorporated his own awesome overclockable kernel, all the run of the mill tweaks and mods all while keeping the stock Touchwiz theme. I gotta admit I genuinely miss the guy. Maybe some of the devs can take notes from his ROM. With Darkside Evolution having a thread view of over 1 million people, it STILL is the most popular ROM to ever release on the t989.

Also on Darkside Evo.. I keep going back to TW roms mostly because I like how you can call up the dialer, and just swipe a name in your favorites or call log to dial their number. Makes it a lot easier to make a call when driving. With the CM type grid layout, I have to look at the phone a lot more, and there are more thumb presses involved to find who I want to call.
and wifi calling. I use it quite a bit at my condo because reception is very poor there.
Big fan of CM10. Stable, customizable. Only downside of non-TW roms is no wifi calling
