I feel like I make a thread for each phone I go through. First Blackberries, then Droid X, now Galaxy Nexus.
I am getting pretty horrible battery drain that is definitely worse than others' Nexuses. I have gone to the extended battery now for a few days, yet in the morning, when I unplug from charger (says 98% but charged?), with brightness only a quarter of the way up from lowest, I can literally watch the percentage (battery number mod in corner) drop one-by-one each minute or a few...So if I am actually using the phone, you can imagine it drops pretty fast. Yesterday, with very very moderate use the phone was still dead within 5-6 hours. It was at the mid-80s within an hour or more. Again, with moderate use.
It is stomach-dropping watching the percentage number just go down and down. Yet my friend's Gnex using the extended battery his first day did not hit 85% yesterday until 5+ hours later. The battery stats page on mine shows nothing with high numbers except Screen and Android OS, so I assume no apps are draining it. I am rooted with unlocked BL, on bigxie's deodexed ROM with softkeys mod, battery percentage mod, and power menu mod. I have 100-something apps and many widgets but no battery draining/updating ones. Others with the same ROM report fine battery.
I believe after using the ext. battery for a couple days, it should be "conditioned" if needed at all, yet I see no improvement.
I'm getting very angry watching this drop.. For example, 40 minutes off the charger with almost NO use except for turning the screen on here and there, I am at 94% battery with Screen at 46%, Android OS at 34%, Phone Idle 11%, Cell Standby 9%, and Android System 2%.
And then 1 hr 20 min in, at 88% battery with 55% Screen, 27% Android OS, 6% Phone Idle, 6% Cell Standby.
This doesn't sound normal right? Keep in mind, those numbers are with almost no phone use..very minimal settings menus visited and one update from Market.
Jesus, literally almost every time or two I turn the screen on just to check these numbers, I see the damn battery percentage drop a number. Not even using the phone how/as much as I normally would be. This is infuriating. Luckily, it doesn't seem to drain much with the screen off.
Quit checking and wait til the bug is fixed and blood pressure stabilizes?
Crazy world, ay?
Update to 4.0.2 or 4.0.3 with an improved kernel = success.
Use the phone for 1-2 weeks to stablize battery life - mine is better now than it was when I began using it. But the kernel/rom makes a big difference.
Thanks. Any suggestions on with combo to use now? 4.0.3 preferrably I guess.
Then why does my friend on totally stock 4.0.2, non-rooted have that great battery life from the first day using the extended battery?? I'm pretty much basing mine off of his and other's who are getting ridiculously long life. I never understood how it varies SO much. We should all have the same relative to usage.

No. Because no two phones are set up the same. Too many variables to say relatively same usage. For instance, when i go to bed i get 2-3 hours standby per percentage point. Not everybody is going to get that.

Maybe, but the fact that I have no other visible outstanding draining factors, and I get no 4G at home and therefore have it set to CDMA only...I should not be seeing 1% drops almost every time I turn the screen on for more than 30 seconds. Especially with an extended battery.
God forbid I want to use GPS or 4G.
More battery life threads please.

Wow, really? At first glance in all sub-forums I saw about two, if that. I have a legitimate concern, especially when my friend is getting about 4 times better life. Thanks for your help though in the device forum where this 'doesn't belong'.
..And over the course of only a few minutes of the screen being on maybe twice and sending one email, I saw it go from low 82-83 down to 77. ****ing awesome.

You probably have a misbehaving app. Download better battery stats from the android apps and games section here at xda and let it run for a day or so and see what processes are being used the most and what your wakelocks are, etc.
Also, find a 4.0.3 rom with a kernel that can be undervolted and try that out.

Thank you, downloading now and will check it out.
I'll admit I'm using the GSM version so my experiences may not apply but for the first few days my battery life was utter crap.
Its been MUCH improved over the last few days, I dont have the wakelock issue and with the screen off the battery drain is literally only about 3% per hour, and thats with background data on.
YES, the screen DOES use a lot of battery, it isnt really avoidable and is somewhat expected with a 720p 4.6 inch super AMOLED screen.
The one thing I can recommend doing is finding a modded kernel and undervolting that CPU - It seems they've been really rather generous providing power to the thing, I've been able to take off at least 100-150mv across the board.

This - My battery on the stock battery on GSM sucked first few days, and I was really concerned I made a poor purchase. But with the screen on probably 5 or 6 hours of my work day it lives through the day and just enough to get home after that. I can charge it at work too, which I usually do. On my day off it survived 18 hours and still had ~20% battery life left on 4.0.3 AOKP/Francisco.Franco Kernel
From my experience, the battery life isn't bad. I did install the "extended" battery as soon as I bought the phone but is isn't much bigger than the stock battery. I am on stock rooted 4.02. With LTE off I use about 2% per hour in standby. With LTE on it is almost double that (3-4%/hour). I have several widgets running and gps enabled. (wifi when available) I can easily get a 16-18 hour day and have 50% remaining when I go to bed unles I sit around gaming for a couple hours.
I may try a new ROM tonight but I expect it will probably make things worse.
Im running a bone stock setup and im getting 12 -14 hours a day... normally I read posts like the one skiddingus posted and wonder why I never can achieve those readings so i feel your confusion . I do have 4g on and gps off screen is about 1/4 of the way up brightness wise
Yeah, that's another thread about battery drain overnight. With some screenshots.
ROM is AOKP b23, kernel s Trinity (tuna).
Sometimes it's about 20%, sometimes only 10. And rebooting phone (maybe with wiping battery stats) just before the night is helpful - then I get about 4-6% drain in 8 hours sleep time. And the phone isn't awake at that time (as you may see on graph), it's deep sleeping.
As BetterBatteryStats and SystemPanel tell me, it's system processes that use much of the battery at that time - few 'kworker' ones. I've searched the forums for some time, but still can't find a good explanation why they drain so much, nor why rebooting helps.
1) change kernel - yeah, I know, I can try that, but with stock kernel I've had the same problem - so I try to find the root of it, not just slap a few different kernels and see which one works better.
2) reboot every time before sleep - well... that's just isn't very convenient and weak way to deal with the problem.
See attached screenshots for further info.
So, any clues about what I can do to improve the situation?

Other than that, I couldn't find any relevant answers... perhaps a runaway system process... I'd recommend switching kernels, as this issue is known and yet unresolved. Seriously though, battery stats reports it using 56s, so is it really a major problem that is causing battery drain?

I'd check that out, thanks! Yeah I know that it's a known problem, but still can't find any good solution for it...
Well it's the process that uses MOST of the system time during that period, so I guess it's enough to cause a drain. And also, there're multiple kworker processes - each may use a bit, but together they get enough for 10% overnight drain.
Which kernel would you recommend to try next? Franco? Seems pretty popular.
Edit: Seen both of these posts, no good solutions anyway. Will try another kernel, then!
I've had great results with Faux123 and I'm just now experimenting with LeanKernel, which is working well so far (wakelocks nonexistent).
I get the kworkers appearing in system panel too, but it doesnt actually effect my battery life. I lose 4% overnight but they show up in system panel.
Also their percentages never add up correctly. For example system panel shows maybe 1.3% cpu usage in total. But when i click thru to the system processes list, the sum of all kworkers exceed 1.3% by a good amount. So i always just ignore them.
Hmm... So maybe they aren't the root of the problem.
Anything else? Maybe battery need to be calibrated, like charging to 100, wiping stats, then discharging to 0 and again charge to 100?
What's really weird is that excessive drain occurs only with extended no-reboot period. Ie, If I reboot just before night drain will be 4-5%...
Check this out. Normally I get about 10% drain overnight, look at what happened last night..
Completely annihilated the battery, everything turned off.
Anyone have an explanation?

The only thing I can think is that something I was doing when I used the phone before bed, kept some sort of process alive all night.

Sounds like you may be worrying about battery life too much. If this is worrying alot you may want to get an iphone. The 1750 mah battery is only rated at 10 hours. Lower your expectations about drainage per hour. The phone is constantly pinging cell phone towers to find the best signal possible even in deep sleep. That is the bulk of your drainage.

No thanks, iOS is too restricted for me, and I like Google hardware better (I mean revised by Google, not manufactured ofc)
Yeah, I know, but that's 10 hours of USAGE. And I was getting much differentiated results in the same conditions (like <10% one night, >30% other) - that's what was worrying me.
I don't expect it to last whole week or anything, but 30% of power lost in one night when it's just on the shelf doing nothing (not even connected to wifi) - that's absurd. About 5-10% is ok, I guess. That's what I was getting with my Transformer, anyway - less than 1% per hour in sleep mode with wifi off.
Exact same problem. I'm on imoseyon's kernel. If I reboot I lose about5% over night. If not, about 30+. Some app is waking some system process up that is chugging away with the CPU. If I lay it on my bed our some other insulating surface, it is warm. Yes, my phone is entering sleep mode, no app doing wake locks, just kworker going nuts.
I am using samsung galaxy s2 and i am getting the kworker battery bug too. about 15% overnight which sucks.

Same happening here, but only after flashing the latest CM radio. I guess it might have something to do with that.
link i know it will help you,and let system go into sleep
hi guys, i visit the links posted but i'm still problems with that. Using watchdog app i notice that al least once a day it show me warning message about high use of cpu. In my case the process is kworker/u8: (here there's a number from 0 to 6)
My question is: what specific process causing that? There's a way to know it? I ask it because i don't think is battery releted, cause battery is very good, excluding for the monitor usage which is what consumes more...
I know that this is a really old topic but seeing that there's still at least one fresh enquiriy i thought i'd chime in...what in effect may indeed help you is wiping the cache (it did help me on several kworker/u occassions in the past). To do so you have to access the respective menu by booting your tablet while pressing the up volume rocker and the power button simultaneously. Hope this helps
Hi guys im wondering who else have a really really battery life, it drops so quick :S
i have brightness low,and seems its draining fast. i tried stock for a little and seems it drops not so fast but still fast, i compare with my old evo and wow was a beast it can last tooo long before drop 1% and htc one X its giving me so much issues i tried insert one coin, and im now on leedroid (seems better) i have to get juice defender ( i never have to use) using hard my old phone (EVO 3D) drops like 50% in 4 hours of Hard use, 2.5 hours bluetooth headsetplaying music, some browsing, whatsapp, twitter and facebook. sometimnes drop 60% its not so bad, perhaps yesterday in almost the same time and doing a lot less drop from 70% to 0% idk what happening or if this is normal because screen? anyone has this issue?
or maybe we can do a "test" maybe playing a video for 30 min or something wifi on, just to test.
Maybe could be my radio? im using HK htc one X in mexico, the 3G works great perhaps could drain more battery?
Any help i will apreciate thanks a lot, i love the phone but this sucks
Regards

Thanks a lot i really like the phone i hope its just something to get fixed soon

screen on time?
Drain the battery completely and then charge for at least 8 or more hours, use the phone as normal and let it drain completely again and then charge for a minimum of 3 hours, after a couple of days it should last longer and if you can or need to upgrade to the latest OTA then do so.

well that is not really helping him is it. no point you telling him you getting that kinda of use of out the battery..it is like rubbing it in his face
but anyway 3g does drain battery specially if the signal is low and it is trying to find the best possible signal for you. only use it when you need it. same goes for wifi. for wifi i would have it to sleep when screen is off.
have a look in the battery stats thread and few people give tips in there on how to extend the battery life mate.

if i was you i would not let it drain completely..let it die down to say 5% i would then fully charge it like overnight. then go here install that apk and once you have fully charged let the battery drain again. once it drains to say 15% check what wakelocks you have. that will help you see where the issue lies and the battery gets drained..better explanation on the thread i gave you the link of mate

if your carrier still shows that you have updates then i would say do that as well mate. radio as far as i know we can not flash just as yet as we need s-off to do that so your best bet is the OTA if you are not on the latest firmware
Wait & see what the battery lasts like after a couple of days of charge & discharge, mine was poor on the first day.
I always try to charge mine up over night & my battery lasts on average 40 - 48 hours now.
The other day i had wi fi on & gps on read some of a book, 3 or 4 calls 5 messages & used a gps app for a while had just over 2 hours of screen on time & after 14 hours still had 60% battery left.
There is no reason why your phone wont get that after a couple of days, hope it is the case for you
Estoy orgulloso que tenemos mexicanos que tienen un One X
Hopefully as updates come, battery life will improve
I´ve been using the HOX for 5 days and it does get better after you run some cycles, but I still find it´s not as good as the battery life on the GS2 I used to have (I was running the Illusion rom).
With the GS2 I would leave the brightness at full blast, I would watch about 1 hour of video, I would use the calendar a lot, I would make a couple of calls and by 19h when I got home my battery would be around 80%. I do the exact same things on the HOX and I get a little less than 70% at the end of the day.

Is this possible on phones with clockwork recovery? My phone turns on automatically when it's got some charge
First, I apologize to veterans who already know this......but posts about battery problems are all over our forum section.
So.....2 things I personally think work best to solve battery draining issues.
1. GSAM from playstore. It will tell you what apps are draining your battery...the top of the app list will be your main culprits. Then you need to find out why? You can check what apps are waking your phone and for how long. Gsam can tell you a lot if you play around with it and see what it can show you.
2. Cpuspy, also from play store. A simple yet easy way to see if your phone is deep sleeping. Deep sleep should pretty much be your total up time....minus screen on time. Roughly. If it isn't, or you have no deep sleep time.....back to gsam to find out why.
Once you narrow down the app culprits ....then you can search on why.
One last huge thing I personally have done for a long time now....reboot after you unplug from charger. Every single time. This used to be a fix for not getting deep sleep....and I think it still is a good practice.
That's it. 2 apps and you can post your battery draining questions with a lot more info than simply saying..."hey....my battery life sucks."
Cause 9.5 times out of 10.....it has nothing to do with the rom you are using. Usually anyway.
Good luck!!!
Sent from my cellular telephone
A couple other things.
Comparing our total battery time with each other is pointless and meaningless. You can drain your phone from 100 to zero in 3 hours playing certain games, or it can last 30 hours cause you barely touched it. The only reasonable comparison is screen on time. Period. Tho it can alter greatly as well. 2 hours screen time on a 3d game, or 5 hours watching movies. 3 1/2 mostly texting and browsing......but still, its a better way to compare.
Gps is a battery destroyer. Some people leave it on...and certain apps will use it whenever you open them.
Screen brightness is a huge factor.
Task killers usually do more harm than good. Personally I only use greenify, and only for apps I know drain batteries a lot. Like maps. If maps is part of the rom....I convert it to a user app with titanium backup and greenify it. Canada's weather network app is a battery hog. Greenify. Basically anything that tops my list with more than 10 percent in gsam gets greenified. My wife used to use Facebook app....I got her using the browser. The app sucked her battery and data sometimes. No....no notification now, but she's on it a lot....her eyeballs are her notification.
Juice defender....great for very light users....a battery waster for medium to heavy users. Turning wifi and data on and off 200 times a day will kill more battery than it saves. Ever see the amount of times juice defender wakes your phone? LOL. I got as high as 1000 before I deleted it. Gsam told me that!

Thanks for this. The thread is a great set of tips and much appreciated by a noob like me.
You mentioned TWO apps. One was gsam. I assume the other was related to #2, deep sleeping. But, I didn't see the name of the second app. What was that? Or, did I misunderstand?

Screenshots from today....got to 3 percent then plugged it in.
Gsam resets when you unplug it, but statistics stop when you plug it in....for any doubters.
Yes....6+ hours only on charge, but with almost constant use this morning. Peek at the screen on time tho.
Do you feel the paid version of gsam is worth the buy? Or, is the free version sufficient?
EDIT: Sorry. Should have read further down the GPLAY description. It appears the pro version primarily just adds better tablet support.

Personally the paid version seems to really offer nothing useful....but for less than 2 bucks....maybe a nice gesture to support the dev. Tho really, a few more nice options and I'd pay for sure!

Definitely a good way to go....keep gsam backup in titanium backup....restore it if you have an issue, then freeze or uninstall it again!
I don't mind the drain and run it 24/7 in case I get the odd issue....like phone process getting stuck in memory after a call. Happens now and then to me....my battery will plummet like 20 percent in a couple hours....I click gsam....see it, force close phone and all is well again. Gotta get thru my 10 hour work day!!! Lol

To be honest, I gotten quite tired looking at the battery percentage. It always gets me SO MAD when I see it start going down from 100 to 90 in a matter of seconds, but the battery icon looks the same. I know it's a placebo effect to turn off the percentage, but it helps to some degree if you're constantly worried about your battery lasting long, like me!

Do the above and you'll know if you're getting normal battery life....or something is going on.
What's your normal screen on time? Average daily use, I'd say 3 to 4 hours is normal. Again....depending what you're up to.
If I didn't rely on my tough bulky case....I'd have and extended battery for sure! Lol

I'm curious how much screen time you get on a full cycle?? I don't remember. On almost any JB version or rom, I usually get 3 to 4 1/2 hours screen time.

Honestly, I don't touch my phone much at school. Teachers and Deans are more vigilant this year so less texting for me. :/ On a full cycle, I'd say around an hour and a half or 2 hours. If stock had the ability to use the volume keys as track forward and back, it'd be less. That's what I miss from AOSP.

Hello everyone, new to the forum since I just picked up my note 10+ and thiught this forum seemed more knowledgeable than others for battery issues or issues in general. I dont really know if it's an issue but I'm curious of how others people batteries are acting for their note 10+'s. Mine died a few hours ago and once it hit 100% I removed the charger and didn't use it for just over an hour and I noticed my battery went down to 2%. I have my always on screen on of course, most of the apps were dead and I did optimize the battery in the settings while my phone was charging then stopped using it until it charged fully. So I had no apps open and I had a version of battery saving on. I did medium but left the higher res screen on including the cpu at 100%. Would this cause my battery to go down 2% in an hour without any use?
For a side question, is there a better way to get the most out of your battery? I always thought it was let it die everyone inna while but I read recently charging it to 80 then letting it down to 60 and back up to 80 and repeat is the best? If that's true, how do you keep that up and how long will you need to keep that before normal chargers?
Thanks. Hope someone can help
If it went down 2% in an hour, that's 50 hours of standby plus always on display. That's crazy good.

Best way to go is using normal charge an never let the battery drop below 20% forget about trying to maintain certain range (60-80), it will just drive you crazy

If I put my iPad mini to sleep at 100%, I wake up the next morning with 100%. Maybe 99. But usually 100.
That's not the norm, and it's not perfect apples to apples, but it is possible.
Also, 2 days of standby with zero use is not unusual, but definitely not "crazy good".

Wow that is unusual. Do a search for "sleeping apps" in setting and add all the apps you don't need running in the back ground. Also in device care > battery you can see what app is using your battery.

So besides that little fight you had with the other forum member (lol) I appreciate your comment. But there seems to be back and forth, one other person says its good, another says its not. (the one I quoted below). Just seems weird to me that with no open or running apps and just the always on display running that it went down in an hour in 2%. Searching around, people saying losing 1% In an hour with the same set up, no running apps with AOD is bad. I kind of agree since its not truly in use. But unfortunately I cannot find any battery standby tests from Samsung or anyone else to confirm it.

I agree with you more honestly that it shouldn't be going down that fast in an hour with just the AOD running. I didn't have any apps running once it 100%, I was on it while charing it to around 50% but then once I knew I was putting it down for a while I ran the optimization and had the phone kill all the apps. When I saw it go down the 2% I did check out the apps using the battery and the AOD was the only thing listed. Maybe I didn't charge to a full 100%? even though it said 100%... Ill check it out tomorrow once I charge it fully again, today I was charging it up and down most of the day sadly. I try and keep most apps from not running in the background, some I do need though like for my IoT devices needing to know my location, I have yet to change that to just using LTE as my location GPS, but that was not on last night all. Ill try out the sleeping apps though, I didn't know there was a setting for that. Thanks again
AOD typically consumes 1%~2% in my past note devices(7,8,9)

Battery optimization takes a little bit so if you just started using the phone give it a few days.
Also, package disabler or ADB can be used to turn off any major things that you are not using (i.e. Bixby or DeX).
Regarding Cell life: Yes between about 30% and 80% are the optimal percents. That doesn't mean try and always keep it there, that would just be silly and unrealistic.
However, it is important to be conscious of this. For example, don't leave your phone on the charger for days on end sitting at 100%. Don't leave your phone in a drawer or a backpack with 0% in the cells.
Cells are technically damaged (or worn would be a better word) every cycle. The most damage comes from when the voltage drops to its lowest point and its highest point. (i.e. 0% and 100%)
For example, if someone were to charge a LiPo or Li-Ion battery only between 30% - 80% for an entire year and another person with the same phone always went down to 1% and always to 100%, the latter phone would have more cell wear thus it would not hold as much power.
Once you learn of this and become conscious of this then you tend to adjust your habits. All other myths and theories about battery calibration have really not been a thing in many many generations of Android. While you can screw up battery calibration through a service menu, rarely (if at all) a battery loses calibration. Most people start seeing battery wear and think its a calibration issue and then seek ways to fix this. At that point, it cannot be achieved because there is a physical change to their battery which can only be refreshed by getting a new battery.
Reporting my battery life. I guess this is truly an all day device.
Give it a couple days to settle. The first three days, mine got pretty bad battery life. Then yesterday I got almost 10 hours of screen time after using it pretty heavy all day. Mixture of Facebook (battery hog), Internet, texting, emailing, and using the camera (also a battery hog). What finally killed the battery was me downloading, installing, and uninstalling multiple versions of GCam trying to find one that worked well enough to use. I finally found one before my phone hit 0%.

In an hour? Last night I even scheduled it off and had no running apps and medium power saving mode fully on and lost 5% battery in roughly 7 hours with no use.

I just wanted to throw my two cents in here... My battery life is pretty terrible in comparison to my S10+. Trying to find a rogue app of some sort but I just hit 1% with 12 hours off the charger. Keep in mind that is not 12 hours of use. In fact I used it for about an hour of total screen time today.

Yeah I came from an S10+ and noticed my battery on the N10+ was pretty bad in comparison.
I did restore everything from my S10+ though, not a clean install of everything.
Wonder if that may be causing issues.
Is everyone having problems on Verizon?
Quote " Last night I even scheduled it off and had no running apps and medium power saving mode fully on and lost 5% battery in roughly 7 hours with no use."
Unless you put it in airplane mode, your phone will keep connected to cell tower (or wifi if you have wifi calling) otherwise you won't receive calls and messages, so there is no such thing as phone with no use, and if you have weak signal or some interference your battery usage can increase drastically even in standby because the cell radio will try to connect at full transmit power. And then you have all those programs running in the background, God knows what they're doing. As others suggested disable programs you don't use, also you can force close programs that you don't use often. When I had my older Note rooted, I optimized it so well it would run 2% down per 8 hrs overnight, but it took some effort. Biggest problem is to know what to disable without loosing functionality for stuff you need. Give it some time for people to learn more about new phone. BTW my 3 day old phone has 435 apps and services installed and most of them I have no idea what they do.
