Hello all,
I have checked and used this forum GREATLY while trying to root my Kindle Fire (1st Generation) and flash the newest Jelly Bean ROM, so first off, thank you to all who contributed to other threads. I'm having two annoying issues that is keeping me from really loving the upgraded functionality of my kindle. The issues are:
1. Ever since the flash of the new Jelly Bean ROM, my computer won't recognize my kindle unless it's mounted via TWRP.
2. I cannot move a certain .ISO file from my SD Card to my system folder
First things first, issue #1. After I flashed the newest Jelly Bean ROM last week, my computer (well any computer really) fails to recognize my kindle. I tried re-downloading the ADB Google drivers from the SDK app, but that didn't work. In my device manager, I can't even find any reference to the Google USB drivers at all, so I can't uninstall then re-install them. And even after I install them again from the SDK program, they still don't show up. Additionally, the only time my computer recognizes my kindle is when I boot it in Recovery Mode. If the SD Card is not mounted within TWRP, my computer will find a "Removable Drive" (which I can't access), but if the SD Card is Mounted within TWRP, it finds the Kindle Fire and allows me to access the files on only the SD Card. I even turned on and off USB debug mode on the kindle to see if that did anything. No luck.
Now, issue #2. All of this is pretty much just being done for games. I have two .ISO files of different games that I burned from games I own. One file is on the SD Card and there is not enough room for the other ISO game file. Naturally, I thought I'd move one of the games to the system folder (or any folder not within the SD Card) so I can have access to both games on the same kindle. I thought about using ADB to manually push/pull the file, but that doesn't work unless my computer recognizes my device. I also tried downloading Root Manager, but my kindle crashes whenever I try to move the large file off the SD card. I did test and was able to move a small picture file from the SD Card to the System folder, so I know it can work when I give myself root and RW permissions. Is there a size limit to what can be moved via a Root File Manager? I have tried 3 different programs that all crashed when trying to move or copy the file. I did also notice that the game file has a small badge on it's icon. Not sure if that means anything or if that's just saying the file is copy protected.
Oh, and the KFU will only recognize the device when it's in Recovery Mode. That's the only time the Kindle will obey commands from KFU 9.6.
Ideally, I'd like to not have to re-flash or re-root my kindle if at all necessary. I'm hoping it's a simple fix. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Well, I have a solution to problem one, but I don't think that this will work, as it sounds like you're having driver issues. Under settings on the kf, go down to about tablet, and tap the build number 7 times. (I don't know if this is a necessary step or not, but it is a good idea to have access to Dev options anyway). Now under storage, tap the top right corner where the three dots are, and select mtp. Hopefully your computer now will be able to access the SD card.
Again, this doesn't sound like your problem, but try it anyway.

Hmm...didn't work. I did not have the three dots in the top right of the storage option of the settings, so there was no SMTP setting. I also just realized the settings app crashes whenever I click on the Display options in settings.

Go to Settings, open the "About Tablet" tab and tap on "Build number" something like 5 or six times. That will show the hidden Developer options tab. There, you need to enable "Android debugging".

The system partition is only 512MB and JB takes up around 325MB of that, so you may not have the room to store it there. Your best bet would probably be to move it to your /data/local folder.
So an addition to what I said before, something you might have to do is select USB notification in user interface under System.

I don't have the option for Android Debugging. USB Debugging is there, is that what you meant? Mine has been both on and off and neither one does anything that allows my computer to recognize the kindle.
I tried moving it to the data/local folder and it worked! Thank you for helping with that issue!

I don't have that option either. For USB-related settings I have:
Protect USB Storage
USB Debugging
I also don't have a debug app selected. Could that be causing an issue? If so, which one should I use?

Are you sure you have the newest JB installed? What ROM?
Nevertheless, if you have USB Debugging enabled you should be able to send adb commands. If not, you're most likely looking at a driver issue.

I am on JB 4.2 (released on 1-22-2013).
If it is a driver issue, how to I go about fixing it? When I am in my device manager, I don't see any google or android USB drivers listed. But when I try to re-install the drivers from SDK, it either says they are current or they install without any error messages.

I did just discover something interesting regarding the USB Debugging which might narrow down the culprit. I plugged my kindle in to my computer via USB to charge and it was not registering. When I turned on the USB debugging, it did start to charge. It still isn't being recognized by the computer, so I am assuming the fault is with the drivers.

So uninstall the drivers for the kindle, then run the driver setup from KFU. reboot your computer and see if your computer now recognizes your kf.
Also, I would read/check on hashcode's thread to see if anyone else has any similar issues. It is hashcode's, right?

Oh, I didn't know that Hashcode was the person who created this. I'll ask him, but I'm starting to suspect I had some user error when flashing the ROM. Thank you for your help!

The only reason I say that it was hashcode's is because you said that your build was 1/22 and his AOSP one is on 1/22, and I took a quick look at twa's and he didn't have any that day. Hashcode's cm10.1 was last updated 1/17...

I tried the driver thing but it didn't work. There were no Android or Google drivers to uninstall and the re-install said it worked but the computer still failed to recognize the kindle. Is there another way to uninstall the drivers if they don't show up on the device manager?
At this point I would just redownload the ROM, and do a full wipe. Then flash it again and see if there are any issues.

What exactly do I wipe? I assume cache and dalvik cache, but do I do a system wipe too?

Yes. Everything but external storage (SD card)
Install ROM. Make sure to have md5 check on,
Wipe cache/dalvik or whatever wipe it gives on the bottom right.
Install Gapps.
Optional wipe
Reboot

Ugh...still didn't work. All my existing errors are still there. I followed your directions (though the md5 check failed because it said no md5 file was found). I re-installed the Jelly Bean ROM but my computer still won't recognize the kindle. The Display option in the settings still causes Setting to crash whenever I click on it.
Is it about time to start considering unrooting, installing the amazon OS, and trying everything again?
I would first try a different ROM. Make sure to do a full wipe before you flash it.

Still no luck. I installed CM-10.1-20130108-1817-otter-sgt7 and gapps-jb-20121212. The ROM seems to work a little better is some respects (the Display option in Settings doesn't crash now) but my computer still refuses to recognize the kindle.
This also presented another issue. I now have a bunch of other programs on my SD card but I can't access them. The Storage option in the Settings menu recognizes that the memory card is full, but it won't go any further into the card. If I have to wipe the card, it's not a huge deal, but I would like to see if I could access those apps if possible. I backed them up with Titanium Pro, but I left those backups on the SD card which now seems like a bad idea. Do I need to re-download Titanium Backup Pro and let that restore everything?

I just installed hashcode's plain rom and kernel. Very nice, all is good except I can't play fluffy birds because the kindle won't go full screen, so when you click the play button nothing happens.
Unfortunately, this is a deal breaker, as it is the only game my wife wants to play, and it's her kindle. (lol, if she ain't happy, nobody is happy.- I switched from stock so I could plug a keyboard into the fire)
So I went looking for a rom that will go full screen and actually hide the task bar. I downloaded gegeROM to my computer, but when I plug the kindle in, it doesn't appear on my hard drive list, so I can't copy the file over.
KFU works fine, sees it, installed google aps, etc. So it's all still working. When it was stock I just copied the files over in windows and installed using twrp.
1) Why can't I do that now?
2) How do I make it work?

One thing you can try, is uninstall the rivers you have now for the kindle, then plug your kindle back into the computer and let the drivers reinstall

You can put into recovery and transfer files.

Don't know about gederom, but in the base ROM from hashcode, there is an option you can change. Go to settings-> System-> status bar-> check off the auto hide option under General. That should hide the status bar and let you go full screen. Doesn't work for every app but does work for many of them. Very likely you have the same or equivalent option in your ROM.
Well everything WAS working 5 minutes before installing ics. I made a backup and dumped the whole kindle to my computer, before wiping everything, copying the rom to the sd card and installing in twrp.

I did that in hash's rom. It didn't do anything. That's why I wanted to try another rom, but I can't copy it to the kindle in windows anymore. Adb works, I probably could push the file on, but I want to be able to see the kindle in windows like I did with stock.
To clarify: I'm running hash's stock ICS. I can't copy another rom to the kindle in windows because the kindle doesn't show up on "My Computer" in windows, like it did a half hour or so ago when I was running stock.

Adb push will work. If you want to see the kindle in windows, you can boot into recovery and mount the sdcard. That should let you see it and easily copy files back and forth.

I had the same issue just 2 days ago when I rooted my kindle fire. The recovery boot seems a bit excessive to me......
I personally run a FTP server which Is a real nice way to wirelessly get ur files out to your kindle but also to virtually every other device in your house. I use esfileexplorer which has an FTP client built in.
Has been working seemlessly
I see you got it working but if I was you I would skip all the cable nonsense when dealing with the MTP file system ICS uses and download airdroid from the market. Fire it up, enter what it tells you in a browser on your computer and transfer your files over wifi.
Also, windows 7 doesn't seem to have issues with MTP like windows xp does for me.

So I installed latest OrDroid 2.7.5, everything went smoothly and works fine for now.
But I have issues trying to connect the phone to my PC and access internal storage.
Once I connect the USB cable I get the usual "USB Connected - Tap to change settings". Once I press it I get the "Portable hotspot & tethering" instead of the window where I choose charge/USB only.
In My Computer it appears as Digital Camera "HTC One X", but not as Removable drive as it was before.
Any ideas how to access the storage again?

Thanks, but that is also a problem. I cannot find the Usb computer connection settings anywhere under the Storage. There's no 3dotmenu or context menu available either.
Found the answer to my question in one of the ROMs thread. Can be closed.

Another option - go to Recovery and connect your phone to PC. This way it appears in My Computer as HTC Storage. Not the most convenient method, but still better than nothing.
any one know of any fix for this yet? i'm on mac and cannot mount sd card other than going into recovery. pain in the ass, every time i plug it in to my dock htc sync link pops up, tried installing it it but it's ****e, still doesnt allow direct access to sd.
If its not installed it pops up as a link, if it is installed it pops up the app. pain if i only want charge.
Really annoys me when they remove common used features.
Someone at HTC must have sat and had a thought, yes they have 32gb non removable sd card but it's highly unlikely they ever want access to it, lets take the option away.
There's no 'fix' as HTC has changed the storage from USB MS for MTP - unless they change it back there's not a lot you can do

you can't mount sd card while using the phone unfortunately... you need to mount it from recovery
I deleted the os on my Kindle Fire and I wanted to know if it is possible to install one I downloaded (.bin file) from my computer or from the kindle somehow?
You posted this exact same question in the Kindle Fire 2/HD forums, so it would be more beneficial for you if we knew exactly what device you have.

Ok, so I've read the forums and have seen MANY other posts on this. My problem is I'm to much of a noob to understand how to fix. I rooted my kindle using KFU, worked GREAT, but wanted my kindle video streaming back so went to unroot. I did the dumbest thing possible from what I've read here and wiped everything though TWRP! (Cache, Dalvik Cache, Factory Reset, System, External Storage) So now I can still get into TWRP but that's it. I think i have downloaded the OS again here from the forum but have NO IDEA how to now get it on my Kindle. Again, EXTREME NOOB here, step by step please and THANKS IN ADVANCE!

1. Thread-jacking isn't nice.
2. This thread has a specific section on exactly what you're asking about, under the heading, funnily enough, "Reverting to Stock Software." The only information it leaves out that you'll need to be aware of in your specific case is that, absent the ability to download the Kindle Fire stock software on the Kindle Fire itself (since you wiped the OS without putting another one in place), you'll have to side-load it from a PC.
So, once you've downloaded the stock software file that thread provides a link for, plug your KF into your PC, then ON the KF, in TWRP, press the 'Home' button, then press 'Mount,' then within that menu, 'Mount USB Storage.' This will allow you to access your KF's storage from your PC, and put the update file onto the internal SD card.

I decided to root the Mrs Kindle Fire 1st gen, all good so far! I was able to root it, add TWRP, FFF a ROM and gapps.
however, my question is: Can I copy files to it by connecting it to a PC? Before with the stock OS, it would show up on windows explorer and could copy/paste files to it. Now, even though it does load the driver and appears as "Android ADB interface", does not map a letter to it.
Not worry much, since I can use "ES file explorer" for network shares, but would be nice for big files.
Anyone?

I do all my file transfers in twrp. Mount the device and it shows as a USB drive. Note: release the USB drive before unmounting the device.

Nevertheless, MTP options does not work.

Yes, to use twrp you must reboot the device. Yes, Windows drivers are a mess for other than stock Kindle. Using twrp is easier than getting the drivers to load correctly in Windows 8.1.
Solved.
Rebooting on TWRP and mounting it did the trick. Not first choice but it works fine.

You could try it... but in the past people have had problems. Won't break anything a factory reset can't solve. You can also use Titanium Backup to backup individual apps.
Oddly enough, I stumbled on this thread while working on this today.
I was able to successfully clone a fire TV 2 brand-new out-of-the-box never turned on using this rooting method with the A-A USB cable and TWRP by rbox/zeroepoch posted on AFTVnews.
( sorry I can't post a link to the rooting method because this is my first post.)
However, it hasn't been thoroughly tested and I do have some concerns. ( I will mention later)
NOTE: the following assumes you have already rooted your Fire TV and installed TWRP. You will also need a keyboard ( i'm using logitech K 400) and a microSD card. Also, have your device's serial number ready before you start this.
Here's how I did it:
1. I made a backup using TWRP onto a microSD card. I chose to back up both system and user data. Then safely eject the microSD card.
2. Put the microSD card into the ROOTED Fire tv you want to clone to. Power it up and boot into recovery mode.
3. Click on ADVANCED, FILE MANAGER. Navigate to external_sd/TWRP/BACKUPS/(SERIAL NUMBER)/ then choose "select current folder" on the bottom right of the screen. Choose RENAME FOLDER. Rename it to the serial number of your current device. It can be found on the box.
4. Navigate back to the main screen and choose RESTORE. Click on "select storage" on the bottom right, select microSD card, and hit OK. The backup should now appear.
5. Click on the back up and swipe to restore. Voilà!
This works and I didn't need to even register the device. Though that concerns me that there could be an issue if it wasn't registered.
One thing I haven't figured out is that although it installs the apps, applies all the settings (like blocking updates etc.) it didnt transfer my Kodi build. It installs all the apps, and it even keeps the configuration for firestarter, but I have to manually upload my Kodi build after that.
I will keep testing

Have you done any more testing? Were you able to get kodi to transfer correctly? and did you unpair your remote and unregister your fire tv before the cloning?

I didn't unpair the remote or on register, but that is totally possible and I will add that. Recently I've added the xposed modules and I did a back up and it works perfectly, even backed up Kodi. I'm not sure what was different before, I followed this exact same process.

Hello! What exactly Partitions you've backuped? I was trying to do the same. I've backuped from one FireTV Stick 4K next partitions: System, System Image, Vendor, Vendor Image, Data, Boot. Then was trying to restore all of them on another with changing backup folder serial number and when another FireTV Stick 4K has been rebooted it stuck on the FireTV logo ((( And I don't know what to do with it know. Could you help, please?
